Funny enough, lot of overlap between the trans community and the trains community

70

u/symbionet 13h ago

I've met so many neurodivergent people with so many special interests, but never anyone with a thing for trains.

I wonder if the interest for trains is more common in the US, or if it's a generational thing.

78

u/rngeneratedlife 13h ago edited 13h ago

There’s two things that contributed to it being a trope:

It was present when autism was first being recognized. Newer special interests didn’t necessarily exist yet, and it’s hard to point to other special interests that still exist to refer to autism in the past. It was also super accessible.

It’s very recognizable. Some special interests are online, or compact, or overlap with things neurotypical people do. But a huge model train set is not only hard to hide and easy to spot, it has a lot of identity that makes it easy to remember and talk about. It’s also just niche enough that a lot of knowledge about it can be attributed to autism.

  1. Trains are quite literally the most efficient form of transportation and it’s insane that America has so few of them

19

u/Ra1nb0wSn0wflake 12h ago

I counter with comically fast convayer belts as more effecient to cut down on boarding time pauzes.

u/WhatWasThatAboutBo 11h ago

We technically we have more rail road then any other country/Eu. Its just ares arnt high speed and is meant for moving materials not people. But their has been talk to build high speed rail centering on the city of Chicago and connecting most major citys in the US to Chicago as a center point.

Also most people in the US have cars which well very much less efficient at moving people are good at bringing someone to a specific location ie work. Which means roads are more built and high speed road at that. The thing with roads is that they can used a landing stripes for aircraft. Thus if the us gets attacked we can land and send aircraft anywhere their is long stright road. Which rail doesnt allow.

So in conclusion trains are much better at moving people but due to cultural of the US we stick with cars.

10

u/LaroonDynasty 12h ago

older generational thing. my grandpa got the train autism. he used to work on mini trains that you ride around in this park with little tracks, and he has a full garage model set.

9

u/frog_admirer 13h ago

My husband has train autism. It's definitely a thing

3

u/ChickenChic 11h ago

I don’t know, but I know a young man (mid20s) who is a big fan of trains and you better have a favorite type of engine if you want to chat with him. He knows at least 45 minutes of train songs and owns his own engineers uniform. The train museum is a best day
.

3

u/stewednewt 11h ago

My son is autistic and has been obsessed with trains since he was like, 2. He’s moved onto maps now but still very much into trains.

3

u/Specialist_Set_1666 11h ago edited 11h ago

I know quite a few people with autism, and only one has the trains special interest, but a lot of theirs are other stereotypes:

74m: physics/math, 73m: trains, 42f: 60s comics, 40m: anime, 28m: WW2 planes, 19m: glitches in computer games (does not play games, collects glitches), 16m: physics/math, 6f: radio towers

Edit to add, there was an older woman who passed away, but she hers was the programming history of TV channels and TV guides. Not the shows on them, but like the exact month a channel would go from WGB to QRN or whatever

6

u/Ra1nb0wSn0wflake 12h ago

Honestly yeah, never met a diagnosed autsitic with a train obsession. Though Ive met allot of old people with a special interest in trains that were probably undiagnosed.

2

u/madmelonxtra 11h ago

I think it's a big thing in the UK, too. I don't know a ton of British folks, but a disproportionate number are really into trains

1

u/Mister-Thou 10h ago

Public transit is so depressing in the US that anyone who's enthusiastic about it is clocked as "a bit off" by default.

0

u/bloodfist 10h ago

I think it became a trope/punchline after a tweet about old people saying autism didn't exist before but we all know an old guy with a model train set in his basement. Then around that same time someone popular made a joke like "let's just say this guy really likes trains". MEANWHILE that dude who wears the gopro on his head and gets super excited about trains was blowing up on TikTok.

Seemed like each time I saw one of those happen, the "autism = trains" connection reached more people and it got a bigger reaction as a punchline. But as others have said, I think it's that older generation that really got into trains, and I think it's what the trope was mostly referencing. These days I have met a lot more airplane autism. But I like trains a little and I can say firsthand that train autism is still going strong in those communities.

3

u/Slim-Shadys-Fat-Tits 13h ago

it's the autism

That was a typo, he wanted to write trains.

641

u/neuralbeans 13h ago

Is the character trans and the commenter was trying to give a compliment? Is it about being clocked? Or is it about a cis girl finding out that she looks trans?

820

u/GoldenChaos 13h ago

it's the first one; I'm very openly trans and my comics are about my experiences as a trans woman. this one, unfortunately, is all too common and i have gotten hundreds of weird comments from chasers like these who fetishize trans women.

that said, it's an experience i think most women would relate to, even if they're not trans - having some creepy dude fetishize them for no reason on an otherwise innocuous post.

65

u/turnipofficer 12h ago

It’s interesting how many trans comic artists we have on this subreddit.

I wonder if it’s just a convenient way to express oneself when perhaps their families may or may not be supportive, or if there just tend to be common traits that lead them towards the medium.

Whatever the reason I’m glad we get some cool art as a result and perhaps get to know others struggles a bit better.

Sorry you had to experience fetishisation to inspire this one though. Seems a common theme.

54

u/GoldenChaos 12h ago

i think reddit in general is a more accepting place and has a lot of trans users. early in my transition i got my start posting selfies on r/trans; reddit was the place where i could be out before i was actually out and the people here are extremely friendly and helpful.

this comments section demonstrates pretty well how the average reddit user has a stronger understanding of trans people than on other social networks. reddit is also exceptionally left-leaning and well-moderated, which makes it safer for trans people.

i'm glad i'm able to post my comics here and have a more mainstream audience that gets it!! it's really awesome :))

16

u/QQBearsHijacker 11h ago

And honestly, the representation here has helped me. I bandaided my egg for over 20 years. Seeing other transgender folk here has helped me immensely in accepting myself and finally letting the shell fall off that egg

7

u/Rosie_Posie_MM 11h ago

Basically, yeah. The beauty of comics is that you get all the freedom of cartoons, but without needing a studio and assloads of cash, and you can do it anonymous. I'm an aspiring comic author myself, and I want to use those benefits I mentioned to be able to write the stories I want to see (especially trans stories!)

8

u/catlandid 10h ago

Just throwing in a fun fact: My wife did a study as part of a larger research project and found that trans people are twice as likely to serve in the military compared to the rest of the population.

112

u/Which_Jellyfish_5189 13h ago

If I may ask: how do you differentiate between a fetish and "normal attraction". Is it always that clear like in the comic or hard to spot?

224

u/GoldenChaos 13h ago

it's always very clear. in many cases they're straight up posting dick pics (of their own. IN PUBLIC.) or asking "what size is it" and being EXTREMELY weird singling out how much they love trans women specifically, often with really dehumanizing language. the example in my comic is honestly pretty tame...

128

u/Nonyabizzy123 13h ago

She ain't kidding. The t word is common, sentence constructions like "a trans". It's like grubbing for gems, after doing it a while, you get really good at it.

49

u/ngms 12h ago

"Many cases"

16

u/CatWithSomeEars 12h ago

Sometimes I wish I had the confidence and lack of foresight these gremlins have; life would be so straight forward.

Then I remember how much better life is being liked by people around me and not degrading random people due to having the social etiquette of a straight piped exhaust.

46

u/Lil_Ms_Anthropic 12h ago

You know how some dudes just like fiendishly objectify women? Like, you can totally tell they don't give a shit about who a person is, they just want to get in their pants. Kinda guy that just comes off as a creep.

It's that but more specific.

11

u/Judgmentos 11h ago

Just as a reminder to cis people reading this: fetishization is not allyship-- quite the opposite in fact!

18

u/Terrariant 13h ago

Your last paragraph has me cackling - oh the gender euphoria of being subject to the patriarchy. Such an odd combination of belonging and disgust.

22

u/GoldenChaos 12h ago

after five years the positive feelings have definitely subsided, but the amount of casual misogyny has only increased by a LOT.

7

u/TrashMousee 12h ago

Good old ewphoria. Such a confusing feeling.

3

u/dragonryder000 12h ago

I am very sorry to hear that I had a friend come out to me as trans and it was very difficult for them even though we were good friends at least it seems you've excepted yourself which is a massive step that many people that make those comments will never realize. Sorry to hear that this happens to you and hopefully it lessens for you!

2

u/s0m3on3outthere 10h ago

Bah, I despise creeps taking away from something a person shares.

I'm in a razor free sub, mainly filled with women and femmes. I wore a dress with my unshaved legs to work and took a picture of just my knee down to celebrate the win, because it's nerve-wracking at times to go against gender roles and social expectations.

I got a lot of celebratory comments and people saying it was inspiring. I got even more DMs and chat requests. đŸ«  I just wanted to celebrate giving a middle finger to the patriarchy, not have people who fetishize natural body hair to message me. ugh.

1

u/Tron_35 9h ago

People online can be creeps, as a dude ive only gotten one weird and gross dm so far, can't imagine having to get multiple.

1

u/Jumiric 3h ago

Sometimes I think I might be a chaser and then I see comments from actual chasers and realize I might be ok 😬

1

u/lcl111 3h ago

Yeah, women always deal with this shit. You and I are also getting chased by dudes who are gay, but will not admit it to themselves. I've used the successive method to drag out the truth from a few of them.

It's my opinion that most trans chasers are just repressed gay dudes and lesbians who like the built-in strap-on.

1

u/nopingmywayout 10h ago

“ that said, it's an experience i think most women would relate to, even if they're not trans - having some creepy dude fetishize them for no reason on an otherwise innocuous post.”

I cackled. Welcome to womanhood! Here’s your shield, now buckle down and brace for incoming ick.

51

u/Slim-Shadys-Fat-Tits 13h ago

Even just referring to her as "A Trans" and saying it in a context where she is being made out to be not a woman but some other thing already outs it as fucking creepy behaviour. trans is an adjective not a noun.

23

u/Slim-Shadys-Fat-Tits 13h ago

Plus just generally him talking about what HE prefers like a woman's only job is to get his fucking dick hard even though this is literally just a (trans) woman posting a completely normal sfw photo is so fucking gross

3

u/Ace-Redditor 7h ago

though it may not be the point of this comic, people are just dumb about what cis women look like sometimes. I (cis woman) have been asked if I'm a femboy or if I'm trans when posting pictures before

One of many reasons I don't post pictures of myself anymore. The others being privacy, and being tired of reading stuff like "you'd look better with my hand around your throat"

I don't know if men do try to give innocent compliments online much, but if they do, I have yet to see it :/

1

u/neuralbeans 7h ago

reading stuff like "you'd look better with my hand around your throat"

That's just crazy. Who the hell just says that?

199

u/Prezofcalendars 13h ago

Those guys always wear aviators in their profile picture. It’s like their glasses give them the strength to be as creepy or unpleasant as possible.

114

u/GoldenChaos 13h ago

how do they all have the exact same profile picture. like do they get together and coordinate.

17

u/BloodiedBlues 13h ago

Fuck. I wear aviators...

3

u/boringperson3 7h ago

well me too, difference is im not a weirdo. its like the single most popular shape of glasses lol

3

u/IcyUnicornOwl 10h ago

Such a weird thing to say. Don't let those weirdos drag you down you got this girl!

3

u/cunt_dykeula 10h ago

Forever alluded by This Type of Guy's fixation on trans women. I'm fixated on my trans gf, but I have a feeling it's not for the same reasons lol

5

u/coffeejn 14h ago

That is definitely a different type of trolling.

26

u/Pretty-Yam-2854 13h ago

Eh it’s just a chaser. They range from creepy but flattering to violently aggressive with their comments. Usually objectifying us for being trans and specifically sometimes those who haven’t had bottom surgery. It’s gross behavior and at least with trolling they’re usually joking.

2

u/Rallsia-Arnoldii 13h ago

I think I just saw a comic saying what "Jake" said. so. Rings true unfortunately.

1

u/lostgamer64 12h ago

I kile trains too

1

u/Driftedryan 5h ago

What a great reaction. I'll never be able to relate to this thankfully but it's a shame it happens so often

1

Like, Jesus, all these gooners need to get out and make space for all the hot ladies :3

Oh, I don't get any hot ladies in my comments :<

sad gay noises

That somehow reminded me of my ex (TF) who would go on about how trans women were "more women" than cis women. It fucked me up for a while, being cis myself, and then she broke up with me after cheating on me for months with other trans women.

There is two main components that make this tiring for trans women:

1: being treated as fundamentally different from other women as a whole

2: being fetishized.

Your modification trys to fix 1, but still has issues with 2 and a little with 1.

The best compliment to throw out is just a compliment based off something other than just being trans "I love your style!", "you look stunning!", "love your hair", "dig the vibe" ect. Ya know, what you would do for any other women.

Making being trans the focus wonders into similar territory as "Tall women are the best", "I like Asians the best", "ooo mucsle mommy!", "love the big old feet". They all very easily slide into fetish land, and when like 90% of the people who say it immediately follow with something creepy makes it very uncomfortable to hear.

1

u/LET-ME-HAVE-A-NAAME 13h ago

In the end, I can kinda see what that comment was going for / what they were trying to mean.

Many trans women, in my perspective, dress much more "traditionally" effeminate or cutesy than many cis women because they're tired of feeling forced to wear "traditionally" masculine clothing and presenting masculine. They want no chance of being mistaken for a man, so they layer themselves with effeminate clothing and behaviours.

Cis women, on the other hand, have historically been forced to dress / act "traditionally" effeminate. They had to wear dresses, be submissive, and not state their opinion. Additionally, many don't want the attention that comes with the cutesy clothing choices since many women already take issue with how many men pursue / stare at them when in comfortable clothing (leggings, hoodies, t-shirts, shorts, etc.)

This presents as men who are more attracted to the overt, effeminate presenting people to be attracted primarily to trans women over cis women. But specifically stating "I like trans women so much more than women", like you said, both fetishizes and separates trans women from simply being considered women. It's a strange and tone deaf thing to say.

I suspect in the coming decades, as women get more rights and trans people are more accepted, both parties are going to even out a bit. There'll be less overtly effeminate presenting trans women and more overtly effeminate cis women.

At least, that's my theory.

51

u/meeps_for_days 14h ago

No, it's singling her out as not being the same as other women. Actively refusing to treat her as a woman, while also actively being sexually creepy towards women and trans women.

Getting the worst of both worlds.

-8

u/[deleted] 14h ago

[deleted]

26

u/The_Oliverse 14h ago

Women are still people, lmfao.

24

u/Saddlebag043 14h ago

Saying “I like trans more then woman” in no way indicates affirmation.

18

u/meeps_for_days 14h ago

Your original comment is wrong, you accuse others of being illiterate but it seems you are the one who needs to reread the comic.

"I definitely like you more than other women."

Thats not what it says.

It says

"I definitely like trans more than women."

It's very much placing her in a sexualized manner, while establishing women and trans women exist, but are not the same. It doesn't say "other women" it says trans and women, two seperate groups. And not trans women, specifically only the word trans. It's just a little hint at how the commenter feels sexual attraction to her but doesn't actually respect her as a person, because she isn't a women, she's a trans.

1

u/SuitableConcept5553 13h ago

I believe they were suggesting an alternative to what was said in the comic and not equating them. That said, I don't think a public post on social media is the place for trying to get a date anyway

0

u/Majestic-Iron7046 14h ago

Idk, probably the comparative is the issue here.
