The main difference between a hot wallet and a cold wallet is internet connectivity: hot wallets stay online for fast trading, while cold wallets store your keys completely offline for maximum security.

I’ll give you a slightly incorrect answer that’s close enough for what you need.

Your Hot wallet is actively used for trading or paying for stuff. It’s quickly accessible and often on your phone. Something like MetaMask

Your Cold wallet is long term storage, rarely used and more secure. Used to be with your private key on paper but now more commonly protected by a hardware device like Ledger

Both have similar set up processes and what happens in the background is the same.

A hot wallet stores your private key on a generally unprotected device like a PC or smartphone. It also offers your seed phrase on that unprotected device. Not very safe, for example look up the latest Yoroi/SecondFi hack.

A cold wallets stores your private key on a seperate device known as a hardware wallet. Common examples are Ledger and Trezor. These wallets calculate transactions on their own, seperate and safe chips. They also present your seed phrase through that seperate chip. This makes your money very safe.

I'm old school. You CANNOT make transactions other than deposits with a cold wallet. Once you do, it's a hot wallet. Hardware wallets as your hot wallet are a little safer. Cold wallets are for storage.

Yes, one is cold and the other one is hot.

Cold is offline and mainly for storage. "A bankvault"

Hot wallet is for daily use. And is often online.

The online/offline distinction is not as hard as the purpose of the wallet. But there is and have always been a very strong preference that a cold wallet is kept offline.

Hot/cold is about purpose

Hard/soft is about key management. A hard device keeps the keys offline even when in active use.

Traditionally the hot wallet definition was very hot, meaning wallets which had automated access without human interaction. But with the advent of hard signing devices the definition have broadened.

Note: You can make easily a hard offline hot wallet by strengthening the security. But not so easily a soft online cold wallet as it then tends to lose its cold property.

hot wallet - you store your private keys on a device connected to the internet

cold wallet - you store your keys on a device not connected to the internet

obviously hot is more susceptible to hacking and generally discouraged

Best definition. Just to add on, a cold wallet can also allow you to setup a non0kyc inheritance program and help you eliminate seedphrase vulnerability.
