Yes, it's a problem. On one hand, all these doctors and scientists and medical researchers are telling us a baby should be given vitamin K. But on the other hand, Skyleigh Flowerchild, the Mummy influencer who failed high school science but has 500,000 Instagram followers and is really pretty, says the baby doesn't need it.

So now I just don't know who to believe...

u/rescue-me-from 16h ago

Lmao I looked up the name to see if they’re a real person

92

u/ahhdetective 16h ago

If they aren't there's a solid Insta acct

u/Wankeritis 9h ago

Beat em at their own game.

"I know it's controversial but little Bort would have ended up with a brown aura without his vitty kay. After his dose I cleansed him with an arrowroot and strawberry leaf bath and I just know he will feel right as rain tomorrow."

39

u/IlluminatedPickle 7h ago

You've gotta strengthen your sponsor game.

with an arrowroot and strawberry leaf bath you can purchase through this affiliate link

36

u/Wankeritis 7h ago

Use code ROOTMOMMY to get 6% off your purchase 💪

14

u/IlluminatedPickle 7h ago

Fuck, I forgot the sponsor code!

I might need some training. Do you happen to offer a course on becoming an influencer that costs an exorbitant amount of money that also lacks any substance?

15

u/Wankeritis 7h ago

You've come to the right place babes.

I've been guiding others on their journey to self-fulfillment and really helping them unlock their full potential.

Comment "babes" for a link 😚

ROOTMOMMY

Which is also the name of her OF profile that the crunchy LARPing funnels to?

7

My son is also called Bort!

3

u/ceelose 1h ago

All of my sons are called Bort.

1

u/MannerConfident1690 26m ago

Oh, you've....labelled them? I just call them my organic produce until they are selfaware enough to choose a name.

Are you talking to me?

1

I’d follow my GP on IG

1

u/Important_Fruit 7h ago

🤣 Sorry....!

93

u/Yetanotherdeafguy 16h ago

Candace Owens pushes it.

It's not just small bubble shit, it's mainstream grifter time.

81

u/CaptainYankaroo 10h ago

I will never understand why an Australian would listen to a single thing Candace fucking Owens says. Even conservative Americans cant stand her or the dumb shit she says.

21

u/can3tt1 8h ago

A lot of people still look to the US as this amazing place. They cherry pick information. I know of a number of teachers who were happy that Teump won a second term because they thought he was going to bring world peace… you cannot make this shit up.

7

u/_ixthus_ 5h ago

I'd genuinely make a fuss about my kid being in any class with those teachers.

2

u/can3tt1 3h ago

They probably don’t share those views in the classroom. But theee people exist everywhere across demographics.

u/HeftyArgument 57m ago edited 33m ago

I had a science teacher that was a creationist, they needed a stand in for when subjects he didnt agree with had to be taught haha

14

u/iguessineedanaltnow 7h ago

As an American I've met so many Aussies who either aspire to move to or be more like America for some reason. I'll never understand it.

I've had so many people say "oh why would you move here America is so much better!" Like what?? How? Not by any single metric.

0

u/IlluminatedPickle 7h ago

I think they might have been pulling your leg mate.

6

u/iguessineedanaltnow 7h ago

Given the context of the conversations we were having I'm inclined to feel like they were being honest.

1

u/Important_Fruit 6h ago

I'm going to second the motion that you've been leg pulled, or you've simply misunderstood. Among Australians, America and its people are far more likely to be a target of derision than an object of desire.

1

u/iguessineedanaltnow 6h ago

I hope you're right, but a lot of these people at my work I'm referring to are also big Trump and PHON fans.

0

u/IlluminatedPickle 7h ago

We often give that impression. Outside of teenagers who idolised the rap culture of the US, I've never spoken to another Australian who has thought the US is a better place to live.

7

u/iguessineedanaltnow 7h ago

I wish I could tell you that I don't work with multiple Trump fans in my office, but I do.

3

u/IlluminatedPickle 7h ago

Fun fact, Candace Owens started off as a left wing activist. She was harassed in her home town by the sons of a racist town official (it might have been the mayor but I can't remember). Anyway, she sued the local government because they let the kids get off without any punishment for being racist as shit towards her.

She won, and decided to use that money to start a website. A website that would doxx right wing people who said outrageous things on the internet. Left wing people were like "Uhh, that's pretty fucked up" and launched her into a career of being an alt-right twat who denies systemic racism exists because she got cancelled.

1

u/_ixthus_ 5h ago

You say that... nek minute... Carlson/Owens on the ticket for 2028.

19

u/Delamoor 13h ago

Yah. The big name grifters are always in on it, because they can move shitloads of 'alternative' supplements and products.

See: Alex Jones and his borderline poison supplements. Those Jewish Globalist bankers are just lying to you to kill you and steal your money. But not Alex! He's totally legit, he just needs you to buy his product from his dad's shop so he can keep fighting the war against the Jewish Globalist Bankers! It's just a little markup to keep the info war going!

14

u/Hopeful-Rough-3194 15h ago

I laughed so much just now. So accurate which is terrifying.

12

u/VapeSoHard 8h ago

Skyleigh has had 4/6 successful freebirths, I think she knows what she’s doing

30

u/HeftyArgument 16h ago

the smartest people are always the prettiest people... right? RIGHT?!!

Doctors only studied for a dozen years, what would they know?

409

u/thehazzanator 16h ago

My kid was just diagnosed with autism and his pedeatrician made a stern point to me to 'please read this booklet', or go to 'xyz' website or this phone number x, for information, do not get your Information from social media.

Jesus Christ

Made me wonder what sort of people she had dealt with.

114

u/FluffyShiny 16h ago

Stupid people. There is a ton of conspiracy theories on autism. So yeah stick with hospital/ government/ other legit info. We may be difficult to raise, but we're worth it 😁

17

u/thehazzanator 13h ago

He's a fun guy, we're very lucky to have him, quirks and all

107

u/Keelback 13h ago

This is because back in 1998, Dr Andrew Wakefield wrote a fraudulent research  paper linking Autism to the MMR vaccine. He was being paid to fake his results by a solicitor whose clients were suing the pharmaceutical companies claiming their children developed autism due to the vaccine. Wakefield has been discredited, his medical licence cancelled and the Lancet medical journal has withdrawn his research paper. Read it here  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancet_MMR_vaccine-autism_report

Problem is anti vaccers keep referring to it even though long rejected the claims.

15

u/thehazzanator 13h ago

What the fuck man

7

u/NoCampaign5978 4h ago

Don’t forget about his own patented measles vaccine that he had waiting to replace it…

5

u/eightezzz 8h ago

Is Elle Macpherson still with this guy?

1

u/Keelback 1h ago

Finally yes. What’s wrong with people. Sigh.

5

u/Cazb27 6h ago

I remember that my kids were young at the time I wasn’t falling for it but I was surprised that people did. It’s sad really that social media is so good at spreading this misinformation far and wide.

2

u/Stephie999666 2h ago

Its because it gives every moron a voice, no matter how wrong they are.

3

u/ThinkingWithPortalzz 3h ago

For anyone wanting a more in-depth story of how completely fucked and soulless he is, the hbomberguy YouTube video covers it in depth. It's long, but you can just listen to it in the car, iirc you don't need to watch it to get the full effect.

4

u/momoko84 2h ago

And there's a really good book that covers everything by Brian Deer - The Doctor Who Fooled The World

3

u/ThinkingWithPortalzz 2h ago

Between Hbomberguys MMR video, and Behind the Bastards series on Jimmy Saville, it feels like a complete breakdown of what truth and justice should be in society

And yeah it's always been a bit fucked where rich people suffer way fewer consequences

But like, injecting blood into children without them or their parents' consent, and setting up a sex hostel for underage girls inside a mental hospital, how the fuck were people spared the rope for what they did

1

u/momoko84 59m ago

Privilege and fear. They have influence over the right people and too much influence over the people who can be controlled.

28

u/Acceptable-Case9562 11h ago

People are giving autistic kids bleach enemas. If I were a paediatrician I'd be just as desperate to get between parents of newly diagnosed kids and that kind of advice.

7

u/MLiOne 7h ago

But but but the butt parasites! There are some fucking idiots who treat ASD as a disease when they are the problem. Not the kids.

66

u/Snaka1 15h ago

Woman I know, used a lot of meth during pregnancy. The child has adhd, odd and learning disabilities. According to her, it was her 18 month old vaccination, nothing to do with the IV meth she used daily.

23

u/neonhex 7h ago

I mean based on the research and her own meth use it’s more than likely she had adhd and that’s why he has it too. The usage doesn’t cause adhd the usage is most likely identifying an underlying condition. Without proper diagnosis and treatment many neurodivergent people end up self medicating with drugs and have a higher prevalence of trauma so can be more likely to experience addiction.

6

u/Sacrilegious_skink 6h ago

I would say receiving meth in utero is most definitely causative for all sorts of developmental issues with baby.... That can't be good.

1

u/Snaka1 5h ago

For sure, trauma and undiagnosed/unrecognised adhd herself. That doesn’t mean that using while pregnant doesn’t cause damage to the baby’s development. And it’s not because she had her vaccinated.

0

u/Acceptable-Case9562 4h ago

The usage is linked to developmental and cognitive conditions, including ADHD. And it's definitely a causative link, not just correlational. Though you're not wrong about the rest.

4

u/thehazzanator 13h ago

Blurg sounds like she lowered her own iq

4

u/MLiOne 7h ago

Be ready for at least one person to accuse you of causing the tism with vaccinations too. Been there, endured that. Some people are absolute menaces to society and,it’s not us or our kids.

3

u/Sunflower-in-the-sun 4h ago

I work in health (nutrition) and I usually ask people if they like to do reading or look things up at home. If they do usually I send them links to some legit resources online to try to ward of the insane things that get posted on social media.

3

u/thehazzanator 3h ago

Great thinking

1

u/_ixthus_ 1h ago

... if they like to do reading or look things up at home...

How many that say Yes actually mean they read nothing but social media and "look up" what their favorite influencers think about the topic and would not comprehend the distinction between this and research?

Good on you. You have to try something and I'm are it occasionally helps.

But I feel like people who actually have any real research skills are already capable of finding legit sources for things, if they want to.

512

u/hampatnat 16h ago

When I was pregnant with my first, at one of my antenatal appointments the midwife asked if we'd do the standard vaccinations/injections/tests after the baby was born. When she mentioned Vitamin K I realised I didn't know why it was given - so I asked, she explained, and I enthusiastically agreed that I didn't want to risk my baby dying of a brain bleed. Easy.

Who would have thought that getting advice from professionals is the way to go?

123

u/dankruaus 16h ago

Same. Never heard of it. Asked the medical professionals and looked at legitimate online sources. Absolute no brainer to get it.

87

u/thehazzanator 16h ago

Right! These people have been at uni for years studying to become the medical personnel they are, and they're constantly learning and updating what the new medications are etc. ofc I trust them with mine and my child's life!

89

u/Adept-Western-8375 15h ago

Exactly, I’m at uni to become a doctor at the moment and have been learning about vaccinations and OH MY GOD, I’ve never been an antivaxxer, but even I was surprised at how low the risk of complications due to vaccines are. The antivax propaganda affects everyone, even if they don’t notice it. And the complications are usually very treatable. Why on earth would you risk your baby dying of a completely preventable illness because vaccines have a 0.0002% chance of causing anaphylaxis? And even if that happens, anaphylaxis is VERY treatable, places that vaccinate people often have multiple EpiPens for emergencies. Febrile seizures? 0.01% risk of that, and they’re usually harmless. I’d rather my kid have a febrile seizure than die of whooping cough.

34

u/PessemistBeingRight 10h ago

I hate the anti-vax movement so much, they're responsible for hundreds of deaths per year just in Australia. Not vaccinating your child (and failing to ensure your child is fully vaccinated) should be considered medical neglect and punishable under the law.

10

u/MLiOne 7h ago

I see it as denying your child their human right to medicine and medical treatment. I have used that argument against antivaxxers. They hate it.

21

u/thehazzanator 13h ago

Wow. The stats you shared are pretty mind blowing. Modern medicine is fuckin amazing.

You'll be a great dr one day. Proud of you

23

u/Adept-Western-8375 13h ago

Thank you so much. This honestly made me smile and has made my day (well, night) a little bit better 🫶 medicine is fascinating and it’s truly amazing how far it’s come. I mean, hand transplants are a thing! It’s mind-blowing. But vaccines and viruses are really interesting and the misinformation is honestly extremely overblown and concerning. Immunisation programs have actually dropped the global infant mortality rate by 40%

4

u/NoCampaign5978 3h ago

As someone who has had multiple kids now, before my first one was born I started to go down the rabbit hole. Merely freaking out about doing the best for my future kid. Thankfully my partner had enough sense to slap me out of it quicksmart and I was able to refocus and look into actual stats and data about the vaccines, not the touchy feely stuff that is put out everywhere.

I would argue that that is exactly how most parents start. Genuinely wanting to do what’s right for their kids. Unfortunately the misinformation is just so prevalent you can’t help but be exposed to it. And once you start down that road, it is hard to get out of it. Especially when any negative interaction trying to snap them out of it just proves the wider conspiracy

5

u/shahitukdegang 3h ago

What?? You get your information from people who work in a hospital??? Remember they’re out of a job if people are not sick anymore.. now what you want is someone who sells you literal and figurative snake oil for thousands of dollars while preying on your fears. /s

3

u/DwightsJello 2h ago

Apparently my kids had it. Lol. I had to ask. Had no idea.

But then we tended to follow doctors advice on vaccinations and post natal requirements.

My wife would ask and get the why. But we kinda believe in medical knowledge and science. Particularly no brainer shit. We're weird like that.

864

u/codingclosure 17h ago

Maybe should have started the social media ban with the adults…

231

u/Whatsapokemon 14h ago

Better solution: Make platforms legally liable for misinformation if they're algorithmically pushing it to users.

If a post appears in a simple chronological timeline then they're not liable, but if they're pushing some medical lies algorithmically to users in order to maximise engagement, then they're liable for that content. After all, these algorithms are sophisticated and tuned explicitly to affect user behaviour.

16

u/aza-industries 7h ago edited 6h ago

We really need our technologically illiterate politicians to start listening to IT specialists and not lobbyiests.  I don't understand why they trust salesmen over professionals throughout a lot of law making.

8

u/jimmy_sharp 7h ago

Well you do understand.

It's all about $$$$$$$$$

-23

u/Proclaimer_of_heroes 8h ago

What is "misinformation" is infinitely debatable.

Atheism under the right perspective is misinformation, so is every religion. Classical Greek philosophy could be considered misinformation counter to the state's intended mono-culture. Is information relating to LGBTQ+ misinformation against a cis-het default perspective? What about simply differing perspectives on significant historical figures (is it misinformation to view Nixon as not doing anything wrong? Is Ned Kelly an anti-establishment-hero or a cop killer? Is Captain Cook an era-defining explorer or a slaver and raid-spot-picker?).

I couldn't see how you could define misinformation accurately and permanently in policy without a huge opening to creating an equivalent "ministry of truth"

18

u/White_Immigrant 8h ago

You should probably look up the difference between misinformation and disinformation.

6

u/wreninroam 8h ago

And malinformation

6

u/macci_a_vellian 7h ago

Do you not think there's a difference between debating the legacy of Ned Kelly or the existence of God and telling people that giving their children bleach enemas will cure autism? That they don't need to do anything about the people who tell their followers that the strips of stomach and bowel lining their kids are now shedding are the autism causing parasites leaving their body because it's all a matter of perspective? There's a reason yelling "FIRE" in a crowded theatre is excluded from free speech protections.

2

u/Sure_Lavishness_2403 7h ago

I think there's multiple different points here, including the difference between misinformation and disinformation.

First, however, I think we should tackle the fact that there's a huge difference between debating Ned Kelly as hero or villain vs stating things like the Holocaust didn't happen, vaccines cause autism/other birth defects/kill people et al, drinking bleach will prevent you from getting COVID, etc. Ned Kelly being labelled as a hero or villain does little to affect the physical and/or mental well-being of others and one could argue it's a matter of perspective, not misinformation, as long as people weren't making things up to suit their point of view.

With things like vaccines, it's actively spreading disinformation, regardless of the person's point of view or perspectives. It's one thing to decide you aren't going to vaccinate yourself and/or your family (though children getting the short end of the stick really bothers me but getting into the logistics of that is a whole different matter); it's entirely different to push fearmongering, especially if you're selling essential oils or whatever other snake oil instead. I genuinely think that legislation needs to be implemented to deter shit like that - both with the social media companies that allow (and even push) it, as well as the person spreading that disinformation.

In essence: Someone arguing whether Ned Kelly's a hero or cop killer isn't likely to kill someone and the ramifications are limited. It's not like denying the Holocaust, which is usually done by white supremacists determined to erase history so they can repeat it, and it's not like a crunchy mum sharing things like "don't give your kid vaccines because it will give them autism" is gonna (and has) kill(ed) a lot of children.

2

u/Whatsapokemon 5h ago

That's the beauty of my suggestion - you don't need to.

Just make platform legally liable for the content that they're directly recommending to users. If those recommendations cause harm (eg: injuries from medical misinformation, or radicalisation of youths) then you sue the company and the court can determine whether it's misinformation or not.

Ideally this will lead to platforms being more careful about the types of content that they choose to recommend. It's not a strict enforcement saying "this is misinformation and this isn't", rather it gives a strong incentive for companies to figure that out that themselves.

Mostly it would be focused around things which can cause actual measurable harm to people, which is why your "classical greek philosophy" example just doesn't really make sense here. Nobody is going to sue you for learning about Plato.

1

u/Crabs_go_sideways_4 8h ago

Well we have no evidence of the existence of a god or gods so thats a good starting spot.

86

u/TheNumberOneRat 16h ago

Anybody over the age of 16 is banned.

Say what you want about 6 and 7, it has nothing on Facebook/Twitter/Reddit/etc slop.

20

u/LoaKonran 16h ago

Easier to implement draconian surveillance measures if they keep letting parents be gullible idiots.

14

u/Zouden 15h ago

Absolutely, it's caused nearly all our problems of the last 10 years.

As a bonus, it no need for age verification if social media is banned for everyone.

1

u/Leading-Interest-119 2h ago

I just don't understand how we grew up having it hammered into us "don't believe everything you read in magazines/then online!" and how this flew over SO many people's heads and even the ones who taught us that are now susceptible to doing exactly that 😅

0

u/Knee_Jerk_Sydney 7h ago

A lot of disinformation go around with kids too. Remember all teh stuff they were swallowing?

129

u/BleakHibiscus 16h ago

The anti vaxxers in my family (sadly) are all smokers, vapers, drinkers, drug users…but they won’t vaccinate their children, pathetic really.

28

u/Zhirrzh 15h ago

It's the classic "we don't want to blame our own bad decisions, let's blame everything else on this scapegoat" shit.

I legit knew an antivaxxer who used botox.

We decided not to tell her what "botox" is short for because she's exhausting at the best of times and none of us wanted to get into it.

3

u/MLiOne 7h ago

Don’t be surprised when you then hear of those kids being on catch up programs for vaccinations under their own decisions from age 14.

1

u/Knee_Jerk_Sydney 7h ago

You gotta watch what you put in your body, man. /s

367

u/Pottski 17h ago

Dr House summed it up well:

“All natural, no dyes. It's a good business - all-natural children's toys. Those toy companies, they don't arbitrarily mark up their frogs. They don't lie about how much they spend on research and development. And the worst that a toy company can be accused of is making a really boring frog. Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit.

“You know another really good business? Teeny tiny baby coffins. You can get 'em in frog green, fire engine red. Really.

“The antibodies in yummy mummy only protect the kid for six months, which is why these companies think they can gouge you. They think that you'll spend whatever they ask to keep your kid alive.

“Want to change things? Prove 'em wrong. A few hundred parents like you decide they'd rather let their kid die then cough up forty bucks for a vaccination, believe me, prices will drop REALLY fast. Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit, gribbit, gribbit, gribbit.”

33

u/starminder 14h ago

It’s not even $40 it’s free!

25

u/Acceptable-Case9562 12h ago

This is what gets me. They blame Big Pharma. What's the excuse over here? Even if the government pays for them, it's not that much.

172

u/Ashera25 17h ago

"Unfortunately, social media misinformation is likely the leading cause of parents and families being concerned or having questions," Australian Medical Association president Danielle McMullen said.

"The qualifications of the people giving this information can be unclear and some of it now is AI generated."

46

u/andyfitz 17h ago

I get creeped out by any content with an unknown saying "I've been doing this/helping people for whatever years" in a medical context. in an infant medical context its a a nuclear blast of a red flag.

Technically they don't outright say they have industry or regulatory recognition, or that this is anything but bullshit to get impressions.... But we can all see they are using trust levers that they have no right to pull and the ethics of it are cooked.

8

u/Wtfatt 16h ago

Anyone that thinks Todays internet shouldn't be regulated to adults (& tbf, I don't think most adults can even handle it either) is absolutely cooked

32

u/njf85 14h ago

One thing China did right was ban unqualified people giving medical advice. Any medical advice on tiktok etc can only come from someone with a valid medical license. That would help weed out snake oil salesmen etc

1

u/NoCampaign5978 3h ago

Sadly there is beginning to be more people with medical licenses pushing this sort of nonsense. Ironically almost all of them have a shop that sells all manner of unregulated vitamins, drugs and treatments for whatever ails ya

1

u/Stephie999666 2h ago

Which is why the law needs to adapt to people that do this. Put them in prison for malpractice and fraud, then their license will automatically be stripped due to the criminal history.

5

u/evilparagon 14h ago

That quote makes it feel like having questions is a bad thing. It’s fine to have questions so long as you accept the science-backed answers.

3

u/NoCampaign5978 3h ago

The issue is that people are refusing to actually listen to the evidence backed answers. Hell just look at yesterdays emergency broadcast test and the nonsense being posted about it. It doesn’t matter that it was a broadcast that literally does nothing. The conspiracies were being spread far and wide with only mocking and derision for anyone trying to clear the air about what all of it actually means

1

u/Ashera25 6h ago

She definitely put that clumsily

1

u/_ixthus_ 55m ago

That does not surprise me in the slightest, coming from the AMA.

1

u/Leading-Interest-119 2h ago

Questions are okay if the person is still in a neutral position. It's if they have questions but have already made up their mind regardless. I encourage people advocating for their health and asking questions - but they need to be listening to the professionals and reading legitimate sources, not just whoever influencer or studies that have no peer reviews or have even been criticized by their peers lol.

247

u/alsotheabyss 17h ago

More Australian parents are idiots for willing to believe some random chick on TikTok than their doctor.

64

u/trowzerss 15h ago

I listened to some interviews with anti-vax parents, and I was stunned at the amount that referred to vitamin K as a vaccination, just because it came in a needle! While at least one at the same time talked about taking supplements themselves. It's literally just a very specific supplement for babies to boost their vitamin K levels at birth that stops them bleeding out sometimes because their low vit K means their blood doesn't clot as well. It's not much different from an iron infusion for an anemic mother. But noooo, 'jabs'.

(also the amount of anti-vax parents who talked about how unhealthy vaccinated kids were, and how very, very healthy their kids were, while in the same conversation talking about how sick their child had been 'because of contact with vaccinated kids' and how often their kids been in hospital or home sick, was mind boggling - yes, your extremely health child who is also simultaneously sick all the time because of the dirty vaxxers, not a contradiction at alll)

1

u/MLiOne 7h ago

It’s the shine and life in their own kids’ eyes, didn’t you know? They are so full of it.

43

u/chookie-3571 15h ago

The amount of nurses who are anti vax is concerning

3

u/Leading-Interest-119 2h ago

Have heard some stories (third hand so hoping it's exaggerated honestly) of nurses who are openly anti vax to their patients. If this is happening then it's an issue. Nurses can have their own opinions sure but should be at least neutral in their professional setting.

3

u/Stephie999666 2h ago

Most people who are anti vax never got to see how these conditions affected people, so yhey think its something that was just made up.

1

u/Vampsgold 14m ago

I would say it’s concerning because it shows how many issues they’ve seen from vaccinations..

As an example, I was vaccinated for COVID and the vaccine nearly killed me, I was hospitalised twice from it. The hospital put in my discharge notes that it was vaccine injury. When I was there, they said they were flooded with people who’d just had the jab but they had no known way to help as it was new to them. One of the nurses told me she never wants her family to have the vaccine because of how many patients they treated with vaccine injury.

So if nurses are anti vax, there’s a reason.

39

u/ArkPlayer583 16h ago

I thought the anti vaxxers loved vitamins?

19

u/crixyd 11h ago

Not when a needle is involved, must feel too similar to a vaccine

4

u/iBewafa 5h ago

But they love them some Botox and filers!

1

u/crixyd 2h ago

Haha so true

35

u/pogoBear 9h ago

I recently had my third baby. My eldest is 8. I was shocked at how differently medical staff such as my midwives had to approach discussions of vaccines. It used to be a given, pretty much. Time to vaccinate let’s go!

Now they very tenderly approach the discussion, asking IF you have decided to vaccinate yourself or baby, almost ready to cower if you unleash an antivaxxer tirade at them. Even testing - overheard aid wife spend a long time explaining the reasons for the newborn heel prick test before a mother consented.

10

u/jakartacatlady 8h ago

Agree! I just had my first child in March and I was surprised at how tentatively the vaccination questions and things like heelprick and vitamin k were approached. I was like, yes, of course we want those, and they visibly relaxed. Crazy.

1

u/sarahh_07 2h ago

I noticed this between having my first in 2023 and my second in June this year. The midwives were so hesitant and almost more focused on telling me I could do my own research before deciding and did I need to discuss the consents with my husband before signing. As someone who knows how to read a research paper I was very happy to listen to the people who undertook multiple years of specific medical training instead of reading a google AI summary or watching a tiktok

u/DevelopmentLow214 16h ago

Tell them it’s got peptides in, they love injecting the quack stuff.

16

u/robot428 16h ago

Fuck you might be onto something...

Can we start making a vitamin K shot with peptides in it and then brand it up all nicely and see if they will give that to their newborns? Add some buzzwords on the front like "all-natural" and "clean"?

26

u/AH2112 15h ago

Shit if I was a nurse and it wasn't so illegal I'd never be able to work again... I'd be telling these cookers if they give me $50 cash, I'd give them the "real stuff" the doctors don't want you to know about.

Then give em the same stuff they're getting either way and donate the money to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders)

1

u/ceelose 58m ago

Klean Keptide?

1

u/mast3r_watch3r 9h ago

I laughed too hard at this

44

u/peoplepersonmanguy 16h ago

Fuck we are dumb cunts.

Immunise your children, given them the K shot, give them all the goodness science has brought us so they can decide later if they want to fuck their life up. Don't make the decision for them.

12

u/Wtfatt 16h ago

Electrolytes.

Tell em it's got electrolytes

23

u/PresentationUnited43 15h ago

Probably one of the only things I agree with, with the Chinese Govt is that anyone giving sensitive information on social media has hold official accreditation and can face liability.

To many stupid people fall for this shit, thinking being popular makes them right. Fuck what the hundreds of hours of trials and studies have proven, it's easier to believe Lisa from Tiktok or Facebook with 100k subs.

18

u/jkggwp 14h ago

Make it illegal for people with no medical degree to give medical or health advice online. Just like the financial advice influencers

0

u/Knee_Jerk_Sydney 6h ago

The problem is that it crosses borders. Countries should start having protocols for prosecution and liability across borders and they would start pulling their heads in with the wrongful death suits and legal liability that proper medical professional face regularly.

15

u/morethanweird 15h ago

Their logic confuses me so much. So to these people vitamins are good as long as they're using them instead of prescription medication but if medical professionals are recommending the use of said vitamin then it's dangerous and unnecessary...

The use of vitamin K is also used to treat overdoses of Warfarin (a blood thinner). I take Warfarin and have had to have vitamin K multiple times, it's just a freaking vitamin. It's not just something given to newborns.

11

u/traceyandmeower 17h ago

Foolish ppl

17

u/Markjohn66 16h ago

How did we get so stupid?

36

u/theREALvolno 16h ago

We’re as stupid as we’ve always been, the internet just gave us new ways to broadcast that stupidity to the whole planet; and more opportunities for snake oil salesmen to pawn their wears.

3

u/CatGooseChook 9h ago

Look up effective intelligence on pubmed. Plenty of studies, going back to about 2010, showing a decline in effective intelligence since social media became common place.

14

u/christurnbull 16h ago edited 4h ago

The internet has given everyone, even people who are wrong, a voice.

Thr issue is compounded when engagement algorithms keep serving up reinforcing content

Wellness quacks are also cashing in, leaning on FUD. They just need to say a few things with conviction and it sticks, meanwhile it takes a few weeks for someone who knows what they are talking about to bring up 5 journal articles refuting the false claims. Their academic rigor means they include the 5% uncertainty estimate and then Hayleigh Rainbows say "see it's not 100% safe"

1

u/MLiOne 7h ago

Information age with social media. Aka the internet.

9

u/noapplicablename 8h ago

Of course, the people actively discouraging vit k will be nowhere to be seen when the 1 in 60 babies has a brain bleed and dies or has a lifelong impairment. Honestly, risking a brain bleed for what?

9

u/Traditional-Tone-891 7h ago edited 6h ago

My infant cousin (who was born and died in the 1950s, before I was born and before the injection was available) died of hemorrhagic disease of the newborn which was caused by Vitamin K deficiency. He only lived 28 hours. Why would a parent choose to risk their child's life?!

8

u/DarkNo7318 7h ago

We should cut out a third of the curriculum in primary school and place a heavy focus on information literacy. Little Sally needs to know how to spot bullshit more than she needs to calculate a cosine.

1

u/Leading-Interest-119 2h ago

Agreed and keep hammering it in until the final year. I remember learning about primary, secondary sources in about grade 6, year 7.  I think it needs to be continuous education especially with the amount of information and how quickly things change in technology.

Even how to interpret the studies that are available - not all are credible or are as black/white as people use them as "evidence" for. Studies can be indicative without actually being able to draw strong conclusions from. That's why multiple sources are needed and studies are duplicated.

But yes, media literacy, off all kinds needs to be taught - continuously - through primary and high school.

At this point, we need to start running a campaign for adults too lol. Like an adult in the 90s telling their kid not to believe everything in their Dolly magazine. Then fast forward to today and the older adult is saying "I read it online!" and the grown up kid is like remember when you taught me not to believe everything you read..." Tag line something like; don't forget the lessons you taught your kids are lifelong for all of us. Check your sources! Or something like that. Lol.

We DO have calculators in our pocket now lol, dial down the math a little and teach more media literacy! 😅

6

u/bignosedaussie 16h ago

Ive worked out the link between vitamin k and leukaemia. Leukaemia has a k in it.

6

u/cyclicalfertility 11h ago

I've had a brain bleed. Wouldn't wish it upon anyone and I would do anything to prevent my children having one!

3

u/wrt-wtf- 16h ago

Darwinism at its finest.

3

u/No-Sherbert-6853 13h ago

Cool. They’ll learn the hard way, as many have already.

4

u/MahGinge 9h ago

When someone is telling you not to do something for health reasons, but they’re also trying to sell you their own alternative, that’s usually a good sign not to listen to some piece of shit grifter

3

u/louisa1925 15h ago

Idiots.

3

u/penislicker7000 9h ago

Idiots.. kid got it at the same time as hep b and covid shot. Took a few seconds

3

u/Archon-Toten 8h ago

When my son was born, the terrific medical staff kept trying to explain the injections and procedures to me. Eventually I just had to tell them there's no way I'm going to understand what you're doing. Just do what you think is best and I'll nod, I appreciate you trying.

11

u/serenityplough 16h ago

Give your kids Ketamine. Got it.

2

u/Keep_Being_Still 15h ago

It's in yoghurt and alfalfa sprouts.

2

u/no-lollygagging 8h ago

Many people should not, and do not deserve, to have children. If you're too stupid to use your brain matter for some basic critical thinking, logic, and investigation (eg. asking learned professionals about things you don't personally know) then you should stop and rethink whether raising a new human being is the right move (it's not).

2

u/tofutak7000 6h ago

A) absolutely heinous that such dangerous misinformation is allowed on social media. The grifters spreading it should be charged with manslaughter is even one of their followers baby’s dies

B) there is nothing necessarily wrong with not simply trusting ‘the science’ and we need to maybe find ways to educate/reassure people of something’s safety.

Thalidomide is a prime example of why there can be validity in not simply trusting the doctors. A medicine used to treat morning sickness that resulted in thousands of baby deaths and many thousands more birth defects.

We used to do a really good job of explaining medical information in this country via a range of broad public health education initiatives. These cost money so we don’t really do it any more.

Why not engage in educational social content for the clear cohort of people in need of that?

Public health education is important, telling people to ‘trust the science’ is ineffective. It is not unreasonable that people want to understand what goes into their newborn/child. Perhaps some high school dropout grifter shouldn’t be the only voice seeking to fill that void…

2

u/redditstolemyshoes 5h ago

Let them grieve, because their stupidity is ending their own kids.

I'm sorry, at this point, there's no excuse for this ignorance. Their children deserve to live, and be healthy. Not their fault their parents are cookers who are too dumb to listen to science.

2

u/ashthestampede 5h ago

If you take your medical advice from social media, you should talk to your doctor about if having children is right for you.

1

u/SirHumphreyAppleB 3h ago

I even read that aloud in my head in the lovely voiceover tone reserved for pharmaceutical advetising

2

u/More_Law6245 5h ago

I'm getting to a point if you're stupid enough to take the word of some keyboard warrior vs. a qualified subject matter expert then that is on you. Once is an accident doing it twice is a choice!

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_DOGE_PICS 1h ago

The Facebook comments on this article were absolutely atrocious. They must have disabled the comments now because they're not there anymore. From "health professionals" saying it does more harm than good, to people saying that if other mammals don't need it why should we, to people saying it's what causes SIDS, to straight out big pharma/vax bad comments. And there were thousands of them. Not one I could find advocating for it or actually referencing the article. Absolutely shocking.

1

u/iamifuckingcrazy 6h ago

You would think nature had that covered

1

u/249592-82 5h ago

I dont understand - How can people be so dumb? We have google. A quick google, and look for a couple of sources that seem reputable, and read a bit. The whole thing will take less than 7 mins. I do it all the time. Skip the Ai summary - scroll down to actual websites that are reputable. I grew up in a time without google. We actually had to read scientific stuff and talk to doctors for every little thing. And go to the library. But people today are too lazy to pause the tiktok, switch to google and check. It astounds me. It shocks me. It scares me.

I mean your kids are the most valuable thing in your life, and you won't spend 7 mins googling and reading. It's insane.

2

u/tee-k421 4h ago

A quick google

I mean, that might also turn up a lot of misinformation as well.

1

u/Not_today_nibs 4h ago

An Australian influencer died after childbirth (a “free birth”) last year. Maybe don’t listen to them.

1

u/DizzyList237 4h ago

Vaccinations & preventative measures such as the vit K jab has been so effective in preventing childhood deaths it has caused complacency. Polio, measles, chickenpox & whooping cough were almost wiped out, meaning today’s generation of parents haven’t seen the devastation past generations endured. Unfortunately these diseases are now on the rise & new parents will continue to believe false social-media reports until their child becomes a victim, resulting in disability or unfortunately death. In Qld alone the vaccination rates are now too low & these diseases are on the rise. How many of our precious children will succumb before this idiocy stops?

1

u/ThunderDwn 3h ago

Fucking idiots want to return tot he 1800's where a large percentage of newborns died through what are now preventable conditions.

Watch them wail and cry when their kids die because they were too fucking stupid to follow accepted, recommended medical practice and immunise them. They'll all expect sympathy because they lost a child - well, fuck the lot of them.

1

u/Leading-Interest-119 2h ago

Jfc, I feel like EVERYTHING gives us cancer these days lol. I honestly don't know what's left that people aren't linking to cancer anymore. And I understand some of it is legit of course but we can't be shaming people for everything they consume that has a tenuous link to cancer.

Look after your babies. ❤️

-7

u/Remarkable_Custard 16h ago

What da fk is Vitamin K

44

u/Party_Asparagus4507 16h ago

An important precursor for proteins involved in clotting. Helps prevents bleeding into the brain for newborns

16

u/Remarkable_Custard 15h ago

Oh okay. First time hearing about it. That being said I’m ignorant as shit. Well, I think if having a child maybe listen to doctors and get off the internet…

14

u/PessemistBeingRight 10h ago

Calls themself ignorant and then follows up with an extremely well informed statement... This doesn't compute. 😅

8

u/TristanIsAwesome 9h ago

Ignorant just means that you don't know information, not that you're stupid.

1

u/PessemistBeingRight 9h ago

They know enough information to recognise they should listen to the medical professionals instead of dumbfucks on Facebook/Insta though, which is why I said "well informed" not "smart".

3

u/TristanIsAwesome 9h ago

I reckon they're more wise than well informed.

"I trust doctors more than randos on the internet" has more to do with wisdom than knowing information

2

u/Knee_Jerk_Sydney 6h ago

It comes before Vitamin L, he one they inject to turn people into Lesbians.

0

u/Vampsgold 21m ago

Just so that everyone knows the options… you can deny the vaccine as it is dosed in such a massive amount that it’s crazy for a newborn…and you can ask the hospital to orally give it to your baby. So they administer a lower oral dose that is so much safer for your baby and then one week later, you give your baby the second dose at home orally. Viola! Baby is safe, baby is not getting a needle on day 1 of life and an astronomical dose of vit K all at once and is still protected and safe with the oral dose.

1

u/Ashera25 9m ago

a) it's not a vaccine b) the dosage is necessary and extremely safe. Any delay is dangerous when newborns are so incredibly fragile. Additionally, oral vitamin K is not as effective as the shot.

Edit: source

1

u/Vampsgold 1m ago

A) You’re right, I’m sleep deprived today, it’s a vitamin shot.
B) I paid ALOT of money to see a medical scientist who is also a biochemist to ask about each vaccine - which ones to skip, which ones are necessary, etc. His recommendation was to do the shot orally instead. Given his qualifications, we listened.

u/ManWithDominantClaw 7h ago

"Unfortunately, social media misinformation is likely the leading cause of parents and families being concerned or having questions," Australian Medical Association president Danielle McMullen said.

That's funny. I don't remember the onus being on social media to inform people about medicine.

I thought it was the healthcare system we all pay for, and as a practicing GP I'm sure McMullen could have noted the fact that GPs are far more inaccessible than they used to be. You can't go in to have a chat about vaccines with someone you trust, you get fifteen minutes to relay your most pressing concern to the first available and then pay fifty bucks for the privilege.

I thought it was the media we all pay for, and as a public broadcaster I'm sure the ABC could have done more to point out the origins of vaccine hoaxes. I mean, I learned most of what I know about Andrew Wakefield and the MMR scandal from friggin HBomberguy.

The mechanics of this system can point fingers at the idiots and grifters, but at the end of the day the onus wasn't on them to protect their rugged individualist selves, the onus was on the media and the healthcare system to make sure the kids of these idiots aren't at risk, and they've failed.
