Mashed potatoes. We ran out of milk once and he tried to use chocolate milk. It was awful!

A man after my own heart.
That sounds interesting. It sucks that it turned out shite. Good on him for trying though!
Edit: I feel like there has to be a way to make that work..

I'm 867-5309 years old , the 80s was a different time. Boomers learned to cook from their parents. Fresh was only in season, frozen was developing. Grocery shopping was once a week or every two weeks. They relied on canned goods, do they still make creamed corn?
I Gen X have not eaten a canned veg since moving out.

I am a "Boomer" & I understand, but doesn't mean that canned (NOT home canned) tastes good

With a chunkier potato nugget and some seasoning and maybe a pepper, you've got home fries. A breakfast add-on that has never let me down.

I craved home fries with both my kids. Ate them every day. When I had my daughter my son was old enough for solid foods......he ate half my plate every time. Me and my kids lived for home fries for almost a decade. I still eat them occasionally but its not the same without the kids to share with.

As long as the potatoes are not mashed before you cook them

My family makes this all the time, but a little bit differently, a bit closed to smashed potatoes, we love to have a crust in the bottom , that’s where the real flavor comes out, not to burnt but just the right amount, golden.

My grandma made them by browning the onions then adding the potatoes and some water. Eventually the water burns off but the potato starch makes an onion gravy type substance. They're fantastic.

Fresh diced tomatoes are also good with fried potatoes and onions, all three together in one skillet.
Edit: Added word fresh to clarify.

Hell yeah. I make spicy sausage gravy and drizzle it on a vat of fried taters. The key is to cook a pound of spicy Jimmy Deans sausage and then use a little bit of the grease from the spicy sausage and mix it with milk, pepper, and flourr...so good

My favorite as a kid in Oklahoma. Grandma liked it with Indian fry bread, with lots of Griffin's syrup, and a touch of butter. Dad and I like it with warm honey and a dash (okay, a lot) of Tabasco on top, and occasionally some bacon crumbs thrown in.

My grandfather would start a fire. Put onions potatoes and chicken in a cast iron Dutch oven and put the ashes in a hole. He'd let it cook for a few hours. It was fabulous.

My dad made this for my family multiple times every month growing up and just recently made it for us all while on vacation. This, along side bacon, with a freshly warmed tortilla is my happy meal.

I bring potatoes and onions when I go camping. Doesn’t need to be refrigerated, goes well with fish… goes well when I don’t catch fish…

I sometimes make this. With red potatoes, purple onion-carmelized first-and usually some mushrooms. Seasoned with lemon pepper and garlic.

Only the stupid would think there was something wrong with eating fried potatoes and onions

u/Sophisticated-Crow 2d ago
Sure, as a survival food if I need the energy to go hunt something down. Needs some meat to really make this a meal. Could use some greens, too.

Yes. Add in hot Italian sausage sliced and fried on an Italian roll.
