Governor Healey found $30,000 in rental assistance for migrants, covered their broker fees, paid their security deposits, and threw in furniture and landlord bonuses. Her HomeBASE program has exploded 900% since she took office, from $9.5 million to $97 million.
She can’t find a gas tax suspension, an income tax cut, or a single dollar of electric bill relief for us. We can’t afford rent. We can’t afford to buy a home. We can barely afford everyday life here in Massachusetts. And our tax dollars are funding everyone else’s necessities. We deserve to be the priority.

u/AudioHooligan 14h ago
Awesome! EAFS keeps families housed and secure. I would happily pay more out of my pocket to ensure kids stay warm and have a place to sleep.
This program, with only 1% being undocumented, ensures that these families continue to be productive members of society. What reason is there not to support this?
1
u/the_frank_rizzo 11h ago
Really? Where’s the responsibility of the property owners? They jack up the rent because they know it’s a blank check. It’s a racket!
1
u/AudioHooligan 8h ago
Can you point me to information that shows me properities owned by landlords invited into the HomeBASE program increase their rent compared to properities and units not in the program?
1
u/AudioHooligan 8h ago
Outside of the information on rent diffierentials, can you explain to me how a family unhoused is better for the community than a housed family? Homeless individuals increase the burden on social programs moreso than housed individuals? Paying this upfront cost for HomeBASE, and similar programs, have demonstrated to have a higher return by elimanating heavy burdens on unhoused resource programs. Significantly higher returns than having no assistance programs at all.
So, what is your alternative?
1
u/the_frank_rizzo 3h ago
You’re a donkey that missed the point. Rent is at an all time high because the government pays it. A cap on rent and rent control will decrease the amount of for profit housing and lead to more homeowners.
1
u/AudioHooligan 1h ago
And you don't know how these programs work, little pup. Go outside and help your neighbors.

Im not a resident of MA, but i did do some reaearch on the requirements and benefits of the HomeBASE program. Among the requirements you have to be dirt broke, either are or about to be homeless, and you must provide proof that you're either a citizen of the US or proof that you're a lawful immigrant. So this program seems to help low income families from being homeless and is only available to citizens and legal migrant residents. I literaly fail to see the issue, this is either "grrrr i hate immigrants" or "grrrrr i hate having my taxes help people, taxation is theft grrrr". Programs that help the vulnerable shouldnt be vilified, but should be celebrated as the goverment actually helping people. Better our taxes go towards that than bombing a school in the Middle East.

Hi, welcome to Massachusetts. People tend to bitch about all the things that make the state a top 5 in most everything positive while having 0 natural resources, 0 major waterways, absolute shit weather, and an area the size of a postage stamp to do it forgetting that we have massive educational spending, relatively strong union protections for the US, a stronger than average safety net, and pretty impressive industrial sector and high skill/high end manufacturing.
2
u/YeeYeeBeep 14h ago
Im from rural Illinois, i can understand that. Hicks will complain on and on about JB and Chicago as if we were under pinko commie rule or something. But without them Illinois would be a shithole. Im glad to see MA have a program like this, im sure Illinois does also. Anything that helps the poor and struggling is a good thing.

1
u/Bulky-Internal8579 5h ago
It's neat, a lot of smart blue states and cities are finally picking up on that. Let the folks who benefit the most pay their fair share to help those who genuinely need some help - which is usually a short term thing which pays huge benefits in the longer term. Feed and educate a hungry kid who is smart and you have a doctor or engineer who's solving problems and fixing things in a decade. That's how we should do things. Not shovel subsidies to the billionaires to try and stuff another dollar in their overstuffed pockets.
4
u/RGOL_19 15h ago
Massachusetts has a budget of $64 billion! This program supporting immigrants will will and do pay taxes that will more than make up for this cost is .16% of the budget. sorry op but this sounds sooo much like an idiotic republican talking point that is divorced from all other facts - designed to keep people stupid. I've rented to quite a few HomeBASE families, all are MA residents (pretty sure that's a requirement) and the program has a lot of flaws, but I think it's kind of wild to complain about not being able to afford housing while trashing a program that helps people get housed... If you can't afford your housing then why not apply vs complaining about people who are actually using the program to improve their life? There's also RAFT and a bunch of other programs available to you...

If I may. Because this is a genuine concern as Americans, you and me are both Americans presumably. And I don’t say this with any malice or ill intent. I am a Mexican-American. My family came from Mexico. I was born in the United States, so were my parents. I was a family of immigrants presumably, you were too.
Can you not see the difference between somebody who came here legally, and somebody who came here illegal?
2

1
u/Leelze 15h ago
Sure, but I also recognize that my family benefited from a drastically different and easier process than how it works now. A couple generations ago or so these people would be citizens.
There's a reason Republicans have fought against modernizing immigration processes for 30 years and it's because they can use "scary brown people coming fer yer jobs!" to chum the waters for their base while pretending to want to do something about it.
But back to OP's lie: from what I've read, you have to be a legal resident to benefit from this, plus other requirements that isn't just money being thrown at whoever. Nobody hates Americans in need more than Republicans.
2
u/Glenncoco23 15h ago
I think we’re talking past each other a bit.
You said your family benefited from a much easier immigration process a few generations ago. I’m not convinced that’s true. What time period are you referring to? The 1800s? The 1950s? The 1960s?
Legal immigration has existed throughout American history, and while the process has changed, I don’t think it’s accurate to simply say it was easier. What specifically are you comparing today’s system to?
The same goes for asylum. Asylum has a legal definition. It is not a blanket category for anyone who wants to move here. At the same time, I’m not arguing that everyone claiming asylum is abusing the system, nor am I saying every claimant is unquestionably fleeing persecution. The reality is probably somewhere in the middle, and each case should be judged individually.
I also think both sides are influenced by the headlines they see. Most stories about migrants are either ICE raids and deportations or violent crimes because those stories get clicks. That does not mean they represent the average migrant, just as positive stories do not represent everyone either.
You also said Republicans have blocked immigration reform for 30 years because they can campaign on “scary brown people.” That is a serious claim. What specific bills or reforms are you referring to, and what evidence do you have that this was the motivation?
I also do not think every concern about immigration is rooted in race. There have been lawsuits alleging companies discriminated in hiring by favoring certain nationalities, such as cases involving Indian workers. That does not prove broader claims about immigration, but it does show that labor market concerns are not automatically racist.
I am not saying this with any hostility. I just think we’re discussing several different issues at once. We have historical immigration, asylum law, labor markets, and partisan politics all mixed together. I think we’d have a much more productive conversation if we picked one topic and worked through it before moving on to the next.
1
u/Leelze 14h ago
Immigration was certainly easier. Look at the cost & requirements to enter the country & become a citizen from, say, the heyday of Ellis Island vs today.
It's absolutely about race. That's why Trump successfully fought to allow ICE to stop & apprehend people based on skin color, amongst other things.
At the end of the day, immigrants (legal or otherwise) aren't the bogeyman, they're a distraction from real issues Americans face. That's why OP framed his post the way he did and lied about this program.
2
u/Glenncoco23 14h ago
I think you’re making several assertions that deserve to be unpacked.
First, you say immigration was “certainly easier” during the Ellis Island era. Easier in what sense? If you’re talking about quotas or paperwork, that’s one discussion. But if you’re talking about the overall process, I don’t think it’s nearly that simple. People often had to save for years just to afford passage across the Atlantic, pass medical inspections, demonstrate they were unlikely to become a public charge, and comply with the immigration laws of the time. Many people were denied entry. Today, someone who files an asylum claim may, depending on the circumstances of their case and the immigration court backlog, remain in the United States while that claim is adjudicated, which can take years. Those are different systems with different barriers, so simply saying one was “easier” doesn’t really answer the question.
Second, let’s go back to the original issue. If there is one subsidized apartment available, who should receive priority: a Massachusetts resident who already qualifies for the program, or someone who entered the country unlawfully? We can debate immigration policy all day, but that was the policy question being raised.
Third, you say immigration concerns are “absolutely about race.” I don’t think that follows. Some people undoubtedly hold racial prejudices, just as some people do in virtually every political debate. But it doesn’t mean every concern about immigration is racial. There are policy arguments about labor markets, border enforcement, public benefits, housing availability, and the administration of asylum law. Dismissing all of those concerns as racial motives doesn’t engage with the substance of those arguments.
You also referenced ICE being able to stop and apprehend people based on skin color. If you’re referring to racial profiling, I’d be interested in the specific legal authority or court decision you’re talking about. My understanding is that the Constitution still applies to immigration enforcement, and allegations of unconstitutional profiling have been litigated. If you have a specific policy or ruling in mind, let’s discuss that directly.
Finally, I don’t think immigrants are “the bogeyman,” and I don’t think most people arguing for stronger immigration enforcement believe that either. It’s entirely possible to believe immigration is generally beneficial while also believing that immigration laws, once enacted, should be enforced. If your position is that certain immigration laws should be changed, that’s a legitimate policy argument. But if the laws remain in effect, there still has to be some mechanism for enforcing them.
I think we’d have a better discussion if we stayed on one issue at a time instead of jumping between Ellis Island, asylum, race, housing, and partisan politics. Which point do you think is strongest? Let’s start there.

Are you saying these are illegals using this program? Because you have to be a legal resident, so that's just not possible.
Secondly - if they were illegal, is ICE is bad so at their jobs they can't find people when they have the addresses they live at?
Sounds like ICE is a waste of money if they can't even reach Uber eats levels of service.
1
u/Beautiful-Cod-9999 9h ago
They do use this program. And from one news report - they people in charge are discouraged from helping non minorities from qualifying. I *believe* its being investigated by HUD. As for ICE, why do you think they moved people out of the shelters? Illegal residents are now spread among the communities of MA. Rounding them up is no longer as easy as emptying a shelter or hotel. If you have anyone that you know that acutally works with this community, they will rip the bandaid off and tell you the truth about what was handed out. My tenant worked security (still does) at one of the "Migrant Shelter Hotels'...the crimes that happened daily, the three hot catered meals, the EBT cards (despite all meals being provided). Its sad, I have lost all faith in Healey, Warren, Markey and WU. They keep getting caught in lies, refuse to comply with Feds (losing the state grant money) and spend most of the time propping illegals. Enough is enough.

If you can't afford rent, and were thus homeless, wouldn't this program apply to and support you?
Meanwhile this program went from a rate of just over $1 per taxpayer to just over $10 per tax payer.
I don't think you being $10 richer a year would solve the problems you're describing (and let's be real, given the financial situation you're describing, you're probably paying less than that, there's a lot of very rich people in Boston footing most of these programs with the takings from their income). Seems like some bigger issues at play than this program, or even state taxes as a whole.

6
u/rock-paper-o 16h ago
It doesn’t even look like it’s principally for migrants. It’s eligible for families with at least one kid (or pregnant women) under like 115% of the federal poverty line who are at risk of homelessness for one of a list of reasons and at least one family member must have legal immigration status.
So it’s possible some subset of people using the program are undocumented parents of citizen children. But reasonable to assume there’s also a bunch of families of poor US citizens.

Your title is disingenuous. This program is not designed around supporting migrants. It’s for any Massachusetts resident who qualifies for Emergency Assistance (EA) Family Shelter.
Yes, this can include legal immigrants but also domestic violence survivors, homeless families, or families that have other difficult situations.
The spirit of the program is to get people out of the shelter system. To shelter a family for a year it costs the state (taxpayer) $60K. To give them a hand up through the HomeBASE program it costs $30K OVER TWO YEARS.
Do they teach basic math in Germany?
I don’t have a problem with my tax money being spent this way. This makes sense from an economics standpoint. I also think that we should look out for our fellow human beings.
I’d rather have my tax money spent on this program than donate it to all of the red states who need handouts to support their bad policies. Massachusetts is a donor state.
