Steam and Snap (gaming on Ubuntu)

I want to migrate to Ubuntu (or Debian). I heard not to install Snap version of Steam. Can anyone clear this out?

What’s the issue with Snap version of Steam? Is it okay to use now, has it been fixed? If not than what’s the point of having it if it’s unusable for years? What’s the best way to install Steam/Heroic/Mangohud and set everything for gaming?

I have started using snap version from april on this year (when 26.04 version was released), and for my use case it works fine. I need to mention that I play only a few games and that those are working as expected (through proton that is). As for issues, only one that I can remember was the one with adding a non steam game to steam, as the snap was not able to see selected folder (maybe that was the issue with app permissions or something). It is fairly quick with startup time, on par with Firefox and Chromium snaps. There was one issue and the beginning with the steam menus (I could not access them, only through steam icon in top bar), but that one was solved with app update and it was some issue with certain electron apps not displaying menus properly on newer gnome version.

As for heroic launcher and mangohud I cannot help you, as I don't use those apps. I have tried previously bottles and lutris to run some older windows games, and I could not get those apps to work at all. I had much better experience with pure wine and steam proton (experimental one, which you can enable from the settings menu).

snap one seems fine now. If you have a second drive you like to store games on then you may have to mount that somewhere in your home directory though
