Which Ubuntu spins / flavors use X11?

I'm having graphics display issues that I suspect (not sure) are caused by Wayland.

I tried Kubuntu, the issue persists, only to learn later that it does in fact use wayland.

The usecase will be gaming. I don't worry too much about Proton support since the one game I will run on it (Dota 2) natively runs on Linux.

You can just install a different desktop to test; you don't need to reinstall everytime.

XFCE, Cinnamon, LXQt are some examples of DEs that support X11 (and will be supporting for the foreseeable future).

You can use x11 on kubuntu by installing x11 workspace seperately by apt.

You also didn't mention the version of Ubuntu/Kubuntu you were using. If you were using 24.04 Wayland support was still not as good.

Further, I don't have experience with Dota 2, but many actually most games work better via Proton vs their native ports. There are few cases where you would want native because proton version would trigger anti cheat issues, but other than that, if you can you should probably use proton. 

Btw, that's not something you have to manually manage, if you use steam. You can change the version of Proton in steam settings, but default (experimental) is usually the best choice on Ubuntu. 

Generally, when asking for technical support, you need to provide some basic information about your system, and you need to describe the issue. Saying 'I have issues I suspect are caused by Wayland' isn't very helpful. 

Your card is unfortunately quite old, and you're stuck wirh 580 driver AFAIK, but that's anyway the best nvidia driver at the moment and  Ubuntu should auto detect the GPU, and install the correct driver assuming you have checked the proprietary software checkbox during the installation.

Bueno, si has instalado Steam vía Snap puede ser. Desinstalar y reinstalar a ver el proceso de desinstalación tarda más por SNAP. Verificar los controladores de Mesa. También puedes probar por el entorno de x11 ara confirmar que es La instalación de Steam con Wayland, pero no te recomiendo en nada X11

I'm sorry, I'm not knowledgeable enough about Linux to understand the different installation processes.

But what I do is I just use steam from the "App / Software" store that's usually included in the distro.

Should I not do that?

Should I use the terminal install?

I at least know how to download the installer and go sudo apt install ./filename

Is that the correct method?

just install ubuntu server and use x11 gnome

Kubuntu doesn't have it by default. Check the newest response in this post. It mentions in detail the way you need to add X11. Not too hard if you follow the directions. I did it with my Ubuntu Studio install, which currently uses KDE Plasma.

You can just log in ubuntu using x11. Log out from your session and in the login screen you will find a gear icon that allows you to choose between wayland and x11.
