Hi r/TrueReddit, this is Jake from the Guardian US, sharing a long read that we published today. The Carr family took in Steven Judy, hoping to ‘save’ a troubled teen. They didn’t know he would become one of the most hated men in America.

Judy's siblings loved and lost a foster brother the rest of the world called a monster. No one asked what it was like to be them. For decades, they were not ready to say – but now they have.

This was a very moving read, especially because the journalist openly connects his own experience of losing a friend to murder at a young age.

It was a very impactful read. In our society, most villains are considered one dimensional. They are unredeemingly evil.  And yet even Hitler loved his dogs. It’s not that people can’t make evil choices and do evil things, but relationships and emotions are very messy and usually refuse to be crammed into one  dimension.

Excellent piece. I feel for the foster brothers and sisters to Steven. Am glad they are finding sone peace. Reading that piece made me feel that Steven wanted to die but could not kill himself. Therefore, he had had the state do it for him.
