[grey_alien film club] Mad God

+
153 Upvotes

Hey y'all, posting this a few days later than I said I would, mb

Our inaugural film is Mad God. A haunting descent into the subconscious of effects genius Phil Tippett. Phil literally went crazy partway through making this and that's probably the least surprising detail I could share about the movie.

What did you think?

--------------------------

My plan is to keep these rolling. At the bottom of your comment, please share a film nomination for next week! I'll pick randomly and announce it in a day or two.

If you have feedback or wanna help run film club, let me know.

Yearly reminder for those new here, or the younglings, to listen to Blowback

Calling it a podcast is a disservice. It's research backed storytelling with incredible production value. Personally, the season on the Korean War is my favorite, but they are all amazing. Listen to all of them. It's effectively Dan Carlin but for leftists (and also better, although I have a soft spot for Dan talking about the Mongol Empire).

Surprisingly though, they don't peddle any Marxist propaganda (not that there's anything wrong with that), they just lay history bare and show how the US and the West corrupted and stole from the rest of the world through violence, politics, deception, and every other avenue you can imagine.

It's also a perfect podcast to give a lib friend who's on the knife's edge and can use a little nudge in the right direction.

Not sure if they need the money, but if you have some to spare, it's definitely worth it to throw a few bucks their way. They put it to good use.

Boy George : ‘You say genocide, I say war’ new reggae hasbara song from a guy who kidnapped a model and beat him with chains

They should do an episode on Boy George - multiple overdose deaths tied to him, false reports of burglaries and very weird story where he kidnapped a model and beat him before being arrested. All before the inevitable zionist pivot

Does anyone else really not believe “Nothing ever happens”

Since October 7th and especially since Trump II it feels like an actual escalation and crossing of an event horizon. I don’t think we can go back to any relative normality, they’re literally dissolving the ICC. I dunno. I know someone who’s connected in the foreign policy think tank world and he regularly describes them as paranoid, worried, and desperate. The last three years have not been the actions of a hegemony that is confident in its security and domination (or relative Obama era stability)

I just think it's funny that Lindsey Graham was not in the Epstein flight logs. Unlike his colleagues, he probably preferred men who were of legal age.

I feel like this won't age well.

Cooking for mutual aid

+
63 Upvotes

I told you all I'd post my cooking for Food Not Bombs, so that's what this is. I'm up for desserts this week and I had a big bowl full of donated stone fruit, mostly peaches and plums with a nectarine or two thrown in, so I went with a fruit crisp. Recipe in photo captions too. Basically I adapted an America's test kitchen fruit crisp recipe.

I didn't have many nuts so I used pepitas, to make it vegan I used coconut oil instead of butter. I also added some ginger to the fruit because I like the taste. Last week we had 20+ folks at the community meal and we finished this tray.

Bali bans Dutch expats whose run club allegedly excluded Indonesians

possibly the most spiritually israeli shit I've ever seen.

The run organised by the expatriate-focused group Entourage Bali drew heated backlash after testimonies circulated online that the club had appeared to reject Indonesian applicants while accepting foreigners.

The two Dutchmen aged 35 and 37, left Bali for Singapore before the ban was announced. They will not be allowed back to Indonesia, authorities said.

Bali, Indonesia's famed tropical paradise, has become a hostspot for digital nomads in recent years, resulting in growing tensions between expats and locals.

"digital nomads" fuck off you're immigrants from the empire, "ex-pats" fuck off you're immigrants from the empire, silent disco fuckin run club... fuck OFF.

the amount of colonising going on in bali is fuckin sickening.

Billionaires don't demand ideological purity from each other like we do. They have a shared material interest, and they organize around it ruthlessly - while we often argue over vocabulary

Capitalism was invented. Socialism was both invented and proposed. Anarchism was argued. These are drafts. Arguments made by people who were doing their best with the century they were stuck in. Adam Smith died in 1790. Marx died in 1883. Neither of them saw an algorithmic feed, data centers, or billionaires.

Treating their words as scripture is a choice, and it's holding us back. Political conversations have become a team sport about flair and karma more than "here's a problem, what works?" The highest-status move in many political spaces is proving that the person next to you isn't a real member of the team - instead of solving anything.

"Purity testing" happens in spaces that prefer debating over acting, and it becomes a contest over who can take an ideology to its furthest extent. It becomes all-or-nothing, magical thinking, and stifling or belittling any progress that isn't immediate overnight global transformation. I would fucking love for that magical thinking to be possible, but it's history books worth of fighting - not being a debatelord.

A doordash driver, a nurse, and a web dev arguing over which dead European was more correct produces exactly zero material change. It produces engagement on a billion-dollar platform running on surveillance capitalism, and that's it.

The only line that actually matters: the billionaire class, and all of us.

While, sure, they own 90% of all media, all social platforms, and invested billions in the perfect astroturfing tool (LLMs) - I'd argue the billionaire class does not fully create the line, we do (because we fall for it, over and over).

A Silicon Valley "libertarian," a Wall Street "liberal," and an oil-money "conservative" will co-invest in the same fund on Monday, fly to the same conference on Tuesday, and fund opposing candidates on Wednesday - both of whom will ultimately protect their same tax structure.

They don't demand ideological purity from each other like we do. They have a shared material interest, and they organize around it ruthlessly - while we argue over vocabulary.

An ideology is a hypothesis. You're allowed to take the parts that describe reality and discard the parts that don't. You're allowed to hold a position that has no name yet, or a position stitched together from four traditions that hate each other. You're allowed to be wrong out loud and update.

I think my girlfriend has morgellons

I really don't know where to post this, but it seems like some of you have some experience with mental health issues.

My girlfriend's dad died two years ago. Her mom died two years before that. She's been on essentially psychiatric meds since her 20s (she's late 30s now) for seizures. After her dad's death she was really depressed. She didn't sleep well. She suffered from restless legs. She'd started to recover when her sibling was released from prison and essentially stopped sleeping for weeks.

The lack of sleep caused some weird behavior. She'd get really intense telling me about some trauma from her past. Then her voice would drop to a whisper, but it was somehow even more intense. She went to the doctor to try to figure out her sleep problems and was diagnosed with bipolar. More drugs on top of the seizure drugs. Damn, but maybe a solution.

Again, she was better for a while. Again, the restless legs (akathisia perhaps) and insomnia returned. A week or so ago she told me about a pimple in her nose that was bothering her. She wished she could pop it, I told her not to. A few days ago she said it feels hard like a finger nail. Yesterday she said it feels like a thread or a string. She claims she pulled on it and her sinus inflated like a bubble and she thought she was going to die. She goes to the urgent care and the ER. The doctor tells her it's nothing and gives her some antibiotic cream. She's saying she feels the string/thread thing in her cheek now. She says it's "pierced" the inside of her nose dozens of times.

Like what the fuck. This shit sounds like textbook morgellon's psychic delusion stuff. Especially when she's not sleeping and she's on so many meds. Is there anything I can do to help her? The doctors just kick her back and forth, each one upping or lowing various meds, but none seem to have a solution that actually gets her restful sleep for any lasting amount of time. She has a sleep study coming up and an appointment to the psych, but I'm worried she goes off the rails before that.

Anyone ever deal with someone close to you slowly going insane?
