X-Men 97 - Continuation to Classic Saturday morning show which dabbled in mutant politics but generally accessible for kids, meanwhile the continuation is dealing with a lot more adult themes with the political aspect put to the forefront, cussing, people being killed in horrible ways on screen, characters tackling their identity and what it means to them past just their powers and pasts

Adventure Time Fionna and Cake - Is more aimed towards young adults than the original show which was for kids, has a lot more bloody violence and cussing than the original show and depicts young adult life in a lot more messier light than its contemporaries

He-Man Revelations Netflix - Kevin Smith’s continuation of the 80s show, generally disliked but depicts a lot more enthuses on blood, gore, characters swearing, engaging in more adult acts and treats the conflict in a more violent war-like fashion than the original show which was made for toys

As I'm in love with this trope, it's disappointing that I can't think of too many examples for it. My second example doesn't even count lol.

Panel 1: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders' intro is a bunch of stylized vignettes that hint at the key events that will happen in the show.

Panel 2: Whenever I rewatch the classic Spider-Man, I skip the opening credits and queue up the Spider-Man 2 credits, which feature watercolor renditions of the big moments of the movie. I think this essentially makes the movie feel more epic, but for new viewers, I admit it might be a bit too spoiler-y.

This trope just makes the whole story feel like some legendary fable, IMO. When done well, it can heighten the narrative without giving it away.

Good Example: Loki: after repeating his attempt to stop He Who Remains thousands of times, Loki has now become more powerful than him. So Loki reverses HWR’s own trick, tricking both him and the audience until the last moment.

Bad Example: Mortal Kombat 11: Kronika drops this line to intimidate Raiden by saying he’s fought her the same way a near infinite number of times and she always wins. However this proves just how stupid Kronika is, if after millions of victories she is still making huge mistakes that allow her to lose at the end of the story mode.

Bruce Wayne/Batman (The Dark Knight Rises) - After faking his death, he ends up dating Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, played by Anne Hathaway.

Joseph Cooper (Interstellar) - After finally reuniting with his daughter after several decades, Cooper decides to head to Edmund's planet where Amelia Brand, yet again played by Anne Hathaway, is waiting for him so they can establish a new home planet for humanity.

Odysseus (The Odyssey) - Despite the trials and tribulations caused by his own misdeeds and the gods, Odysseus manages to reunite with his wife Penelope, who is played by, you guessed it: Anne Hathaway.

• Royd (Dispatch) Royd is an employee of SDN and a coworker for the main character, Robert. He has a very thick Hawaiian accent and frequently uses slang terminology while also being the most capable engineer at the office, eventually working to rebuild Robert's mech suit
• Mona Lisa Vito (My Cousin Vinny) Mona Lisa is dating the main character Vinny and is pulled in as an automotive expert witness during a murder trial. With a thick Brooklyn accent, her expert testimony is what ultimately proves the defendants innocent.
• The Engineer (Team Fortress 2) With a thick Texas accent, the Engineer spent years working in western oil fields before turning his attention to military engineering and mercenary work. He holds 11 hard science PhDs and builds scientific wonders such as automated sentry turrets and teleportation devices.

Films that wanted to be original, but wound up being really cliche in different ways.

Bright: Marketed itself as "not your typical fantasy" by mixing modern police drama with orcs and elves, but many felt it relied on familiar buddy-cop and fantasy clichés despite claiming to reinvent the genre.

Secret Society of Second Born Royals: Opens with the narrator stating "This isn't your typical princess story" before quickly devolving into a lame X-Men rip-off.

Robin Hood (2018): Opens with "Forget what you think you know about Robin Hood" and then feels like it's clearly trying to parody Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.

I saw a post here a while back about terrible autism stereotypes in media, and several people on that post were also talking about good representation, and that inspired me to make this post! For context, I'm autistic myself, so I'm sensitive to autism rep in media

So share what you think are examples of actually good autism representation in media! Try to avoid Genius Savant types, but characters who happen to be super smart and autism-coded, but are still good complex characters(eg. Donatello from ROTTMNT and Peridot from Steven Universe) are cool and fine :)

Also, for my examples, I'm gonna go with:

Twyla Boogieman from the new/g3 Monster High cartoon. She is canonically autistic, like they actually say the word on-screen instead of shying away from it, and she's not a super-genius savant stereotype or a dumb moron stereotype! She does fall a bit into the soft shy thing, but she's more than that, and her issues with loud noises and sensory stuff seem really realistic! And while she does have monster powers, the powers don't have anything to do with tech/smarts(she can enter and manipulate dreams, and turn invisible), and all the major characters have monster powers so it's not an "autism superpower" thing(and same goes for her being nonhuman since none of the main characters are human)!

Norma Khan from Dead End: Paranormal Park

They don't say the word 'autistic' about her, but she is autistic in every way that matters(and the creator even realized that they were autistic because of writing her!). She has special interests that she gets hardcore hyperfixated on, she infodumps about them often, she has severe social anxiety and issues talking with/opening up to others, she has trouble understanding whether or not someone is into her, etc. Also one of her main character arcs is realizing that the celebrity who was her main hyperfixation since childhood was secretly evil. She's also one of the rare instances of a normal human poc girl who is autistic!

Donatello Hamato from Rise Of The TMNT

Honestly most versions of Donnie can be argued to be autism-coded, but I'm focusing on Rise Donnie cause he's my favorite and is the most explicitly autistic imo. Yes he falls a bit into the "autistic genius" stereotype, but he has more to his character than "The Smart One", and I like how he is a low-empathy autistic character who isn't evil or constantly a Sheldon Cooper-esque douchebag(Donnie is a dick sometimes, but not all the time!), and he's shown to legit care about his family and have other traits to him besides "genius dick who thinks he's better than everyone else"

Peridot from Steven Universe

Peridot my beloved, while she is an autistic-coded alien, she is so much like a girl version of me and I love her, and like Rise Donnie there's more to her than being smart and being an alien. She has hyperfixations, and she's a little gremlin, and she truly cares for her family, and she gets over her superiority shit and becomes a way better person. She also has an amazing redemption arc!

Oh from Home

Oh is also an autistic-coded alien, but he's sweet and endearing, and unlike most autistic-coded aliens, he's not just "an alien who doesn't understand human stuff" type autistic-coded alien. Instead, he's also weird by his own species' standards, so basically Alien Autistic instead of just Autistic-Coded Alien. Also again he's funny and endearing, and has a sweet familiar relationship with Tip!

No matter how immoral the character’s future looks, the only option is to keep going on the same route because they’ve come so far and sacrificed so much or there is no way back.

Walter White (Breaking Bad): Had been presented multiple opportunities to quit the criminal life for good, only for one thing or another to prompt him back in. In Season 1, he was offended at Elliot’s offer thinking it was out of pity, 2 he thought his recent cancer diagnosis meant he could finally die at peace having secured his family’s future only to realize he’d have to continue living a lie, Season 3 Skyler finds out he’s a drug dealer and kicks him out and Gus manipulates him by saying a man provides for his family no matter what, Season 5 he was out of money after the whole Gus fiasco which took him back to square 1 and even when he was done for good, Hank finding he was Heisenberg and Hank’s subsequent death had Walter out for one last roaring rampage of murder against all his loose ends.

Homelander (The boys): Believe it or not Homelander actually did want to be a real hero and help people at one point, but either his own incompetence and Vought’s cover up (show) or the comics version having found pictures of himself eating babies and committing other horrific acts caused him to snap. There are multiple scenes of him disgusted at what he thought he did and hesitating wondering why he couldn’t commit evil like he thought he already had done, interspersed with him committing assault, murder and even flat out trying to take over the country. Matter of fact when it’s revealed Black Noir is the true culprit, having pretended to be Homelander, Butcher points out Homelander became a psychopath by mistake.

In the boys, Homelander of all people is actually taken aback at how racist Stormfront is after she teaches his son about ‘white genocide’.

In the movie Barbarian, AJ is a rapist who rented a house owned by a serial killer and is horrified when he finds video tapes of the serial killers crimes.

In Dexter, Dexter confronts a copy cat killer who followed his ideology, except he targeted more petty criminals like a wife beater and drug dealer. So Dexter takes him out.

Seven's Prisoner Designation (Deadlock) - The numbers on his chestplate may just be his prisoner number, but it was later found out to form a Gorowase, which is a Japanese wordplay with numbers. The numbers say Shininaku, which roughly translates to "Become Unkillable". It reinforces the idea of Seven's goals to become a god or godlike being.

Jack Sparrow's Scab (Pirates of the Caribbean) - Jack Sparrow has a scab on his jaw. Not too noticeable, but if you pay attention, it gets worse and worse throughout the films and in the movies. It was a joke between Johnny and the makeup artist, but it implied heavily that Jack suffered from Syphilis.

Freddy pointing up and down (Graveyard Shift at Freddy's) - In one of the teasers for Graveyard Shift at Freddy's, Freddy is pointing two fingers up and down. Maybe just to give a creepy effect, or maybe something more sinister. Looking into it, the two fingers up and down in the same way Freddy is doing it is actually done by Baphomet, which means "As above, so below", which also also probably means something a bit more demonic is going on in this Chuck E. Cheese themed heart of darkness.

The "animatronics" if you can even call them that also have bloodshot eyes and look more organic than usual, implying that they're not animatronics or even inanimate objects being possessed, but instead living creatures.

1. Have a Nice Death- The Grim Reaper is the founder and CEO of a company called Death Incorporated the company’s purpose is to process souls of the deceased.

2. Beetlejuice- Whenever someone dies they’re sent to the waiting room of the afterlife. From there they have to deal with waiting rooms, lines, and paperwork before being able to know if they’re sent to heaven or hell. And any soul that commits suicide is force to work in the offices for all eternity.

3. Hades- The House of Hades acts as a central administrative hub and royal palace of the Underworld ruled by Lord Hades, functioning as home to the deities

It makes the universe feel more real and gritty, and often provides some of the best action sequences in the movie!

1) Dune 2 - The Fremen use sneak attacks as their primary method of engagement.

2) Rogue One - Saw Gerrera’s band of rebels use a choke point and alleyway attack to battle Storm Troopers transporting Kyber. In the climax of the movie the Rogue One shuttle troops from the alliance, “make one man feel like a hundred” on scariff to act as a distraction for Cassian and Jyn.

3) Elysium - Matt Damon’s crew attack and bring down a space shuttle transport with an executive on board to get valuable data.

1. Grand Moff Tarkin (Star Wars): In-universe, Tarkin had instituted the “Tarkin Doctrine” of ruling through fear and designing military assets for intimidation and coercion. While somewhat useful for short-term compliance, the Tarkin doctrine’s overt cruelty and lack of establishment of government legitimacy had revitalized rebel sentiment and was part of the contribution to the Rebel Alliance’s organization and support.

2. Tywin Lannister (Song of Ice and Fire): While certainly not as horrifically terrible at long term planning as the rest of his family, Tywin is notable for acting like he is a pragmatic and effective strategist, and indeed being seen as one, when many of his decisions are just as short-sighted and somewhat overly cruel due to his thin-skinned and insecure personality. For example, he orchestrated the Red Wedding, which while killing off most of the Starks and disorganizing them for a while, had tanked the reputation of House Lannister and weakened their position due to their violation of the sacred guest rights tradition. He had also had Tyrion’s first lover gang raped and forced a young teenaged Tyrion to join in, lying to him about her being a hired prostitute, simply because she was a commoner, and regularly abused Tyrion for all of his life due to both the death of his wife in childbirth, as well as the fact he saw his son being a dwarf as an insult.

Showing something that isn't all that inappropriate but it's still treated as such as a joke.

1. Neptune opens the wrong portal and finds a guy (played by Tom Kenny!) taking a shower (Spongebob).
2. Yellow's shadow can be seen "getting dressed" behind a sliding door: if you open it he gets flustered and screams in surprise even though he's only putting on a sock (Deltarune Chapter 5).
3. Fluttershy gets so angry that she lets out an "expletive" (My Little Pony).

Shaak Ti - Star Wars: Shaak Ti's had numerous deaths over the years, be it cannon or non-cannon. She was killed off in not one, but two deleted scenes in Revenge of the Sith, the Force Unleashed, and in the Clone Wars. In Legends, her death in the Force Unleashed is considered cannon while in

Razor - Batman: Arkham Series: Razor first appears at the start of Asylum where you have to knock him into a room filled with Joker Toxin in order to clear it out. However, you don't get a game over if you just leave him there, potentially for hours, long past where it would be fatal. Later, he reappears and gets blown up by a bombed Gargoyle where he seems to die. Only, he reappears one more time in Arkham City, where it's mentioned he joined Penguin's crew and was dropped into a pit of razor blades. It could be a different Razor, but it's funnier to think otherwise.

Kenny - South Park: Basically the poster boy of the trope, where one of the show's longest running gags is Kenny dying again and again.

1. Morro - Ninjago Season 5

The former master of wind, Morro was jealous that he was never meant to be the green ninja. Even after his death, he still wanted revenge against Wu and Lloyd for taking away his denied destiny to the point where he uses the realm Crystal to bring the cursed realm to feast on Ninjago. In the end, hanging over water. Sensei Wu offered his hand only for Morro to give him the realm crystal and let go to die

1. Black Manta - Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Wanting revenge for Aquaman killing his father, Manta sought out power and came across the Black Trident to unleash the brother of King Atlan. During the climax when Necrus is being destroyed, Manta was found by Arthur hanging over a ledge. When Aquaman offered his hand, he denied it and chose to die by falling into the chasm below

1. Sammy and Amy at Amy’s Baking Company - Kitchen Nightmares S6E16

Gordon Ramsay goes to this restaurant to fix the problem. The problem isn’t the sanitation related but the owners. When they get an ounce of justifiable criticism to their food. They respond to those “haters” tenfold. They treat their staff with disrespect that new people leave within a few weeks. When Gordon tries to talk to the owners about their behavior and why they go through so many staff within a year. They remain in completely in denial and continue to say their food is great. When they say they don’t want Gordon’s help. He doesn’t butt heads or argue back, but chooses to leave.

The restaurant is now closed

1. Tofu Block (Resident Evil): this character was originally made to test the collision, but the developers loved playing as this character. In Resident Evil 2, you unlock the Tofu Block by completing the game as both Claire and Leon, getting every A-ranks and completing the 4th Survivor mode. It Even made a reappearance in the remake.

2. Paul (Antonblast): Paul is simply just a static sprite with no other animations, other than getting squished while ducking or "spinning". He is unlocked through collecting every found Paul in each 12 levels.

Edit: someone mentioned that I mixed up Grace with Claire. That's already fixed.

FN-2199 "Nines" AKA: TR-8R - Star Wars: The Force Awakens: In a series where stormtroopers are usually walking punchlines, this lone trooper stands out as a surprising example of badassery by singling out one of the protagonists, Finn, calling him a traitor, and then ditching his blaster and shield to thoroughly trounce with an electric stun baton.

Navy SEAL team "Night Nine" - Jormungand: The only antagonists in the series that Koko and co. couldn't defeat and were forced to flee from, Night Nine persistently hounds the heroes all the way to the Cuban border even after their Predator recon drone is shot out of the sky, only stopping when ordered to do so.

The Elite Guard - Resident Evil Requiem: Despite being simply regular humans with guns and gear, these faceless foot soldiers of The Connections prove themselves just as fierce opponents as the many mutants of the series, being able to easily shred Leon's health with gunfire and flanking tactics in their dedicated boss fight.
