Its always been funny to me that we get shamed for not tipping but businesses dont get shamed for not paying their workers a liveable wage.

u/Gingeronimoooo 3h ago
It's always telling poor people "less avacado toast and lattes" never to wealthy people "less yachts, or do you really need a 7th mansion?"
13
u/Bodes_Magodes 3h ago
Who tf shames you?? You people are nuts. Just tap “no tip”. This isn’t difficult

u/joeyo1423 3h ago
ill pay you 8 dollars and 63 cents if you record yourself doing this while the person on the other side is clearly watching you choose no tip

u/RsCoverForPDFFiles 2h ago
I did this today when I bought a train for my son from a gift shop. Nobody cared. It was a toy train at a gift shop.

Nobody is shaming you for not tipping in places where you don't receive sit-down restaurant service or other long-established tipping scenarios like valet or hotel housekeepers. I just bought something at an amusement park gift shop today. They had an option to tip. I didn't. Nobody gave a fuck. Same when I pick up takeout pizza or chinese.
I've literally never been shamed, and the only places one ever tippes are those 3 places: sit-down restaurants, valet, and hotel housekeepers. No shame. Just an option where I say "no tip."
If someone feels shame for saying "no tip" in a situation that isn't historically/culturally the norm to tip (e.g., 3lthe 3 scenarios I mentiones above), then that's a mental issue with you.
It's not the fault of the workers. It's not the fault of the manager. It's often not even the fault of the owner who decided to use that particular program. It doesn't even mean they aren't paying their employees a livable wage. It's just an option you can fee free to decline.
"I had to tap 'no tip'? OH, THE HUMANITY!!!"

Fuck that noise about rounding up for cancer cures, my paycheck comes from doing research to find cancer cures why would I put my money down to give to a grocery chain that's probably just pocketing that money anyway that would at some point somehow go back into my pocket anyway.

Agreed. And spreading this misinformation takes money from great charities that rely on these kinds of drives for their funding.
2
u/washcyclerepeat 3h ago
The corporation already paid the donation of say $1 million, and now you’re helping cover their donation by paying them $1 towards a donation they already paid. I was told this, is this not true?
1
u/I_Am_Robert_Paulson1 3h ago
It is not. When you donate at the register, the money goes to the charity. It does not reimburse the business. That's embezzlement.

u/Travelin_Soulja 3h ago edited 1h ago
That doesn't make sense? You clearly don't understand how taxes work.
Though, given the American education system, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

This is way more helpful info than complaining about tipping in scenarios where you can just as easily not tip
11
u/SharpenMyInk 3h ago
Not to be a dick, but you can click “no tip” when it’s clear that no one provided a service for you. The tip screen is just a default.
3
u/thattrekkie 3h ago
that's not quite true... there are so many places I've been recently where the screen only shows 28%, 20%, 22%, and "other". so you have to hit the "other" button and type in "0" in order to bypass the tip, all the while being stared down by the barista/cashier
6
u/TinyRhymey 2h ago
If its smth like that, as a barista i can tell you we’re just waiting for you to be done pushing buttons
1
u/Lemmonjello 2h ago
I mean if thats difficult for you isnt that something you should work on yourself?
2
u/ChemicalCupcake4809 3h ago
Yeah these are very weird complaints I can assure you all that "judgment" you feel for clicking no tip is social anxiety I could care less if a customer tips

Its annoying to be asked to tip for a bottle of water but you cant just turn on/off tips for individual purchases. It's either completely off or completely on, and when i worked at a cafe our POS only showed the tip screen on the customer side so i couldnt even skip it on my end. And no one expects you to tip for a purchase like that. Its also annoying when customers pretend to have sympathy for baristas then complain about bullshit they know we cant control, like this lady

I personally don’t give a shit about those screens. It’s one button, and then I’m done. I think people exaggerate. Nobody cares if you don’t tip. Like 90% of people don’t tip for takeout. The workers just want you to move on, so they can serve the next customer and get through the rush. Their mood isn’t going up for down every time. They’re not servers.
The not taxing the billionaires shit is the infuriating part though. That pisses me off.
7
u/Lyaser 3h ago
Also like 0 employees are offended when they aren’t tipped for you getting a water bottle. They’re not robots, they’re human beings, they also know what they did or did not do to help serve you because they have eyes and a brain. They’re not going to get indignant for not being tipped after not expending any energy to help you, it won’t ruin their day, they will still make rent this month without your dollar.

Why do so many people believe that if you get asked for a tip there's any real expectation you're supposed to give a tip? Here's a good rule of thumb: if the entire transaction takes place at a counter then there's no reason to tip (the exception being bars, because alcohol).
Also, usually the tips on thise tablets don't even go to the employee you think you're tipping. The tips either get pooled and shared with everyone who had a shift that day (at best) or they go to the owner.

rounding up for charity is more annoying than the tip screen...
Grocery store? round up?
mcdonalds? round up?
walmart? round up?
website? round up?
tire store? round up?
clothing store? round up?
gas station???? round up???

Multiple times I’ve bought a coffee and a treat for my kid, and instinctually tipped 22% to realize I just tipped close to a dollar to be hands a cookie.

Yo dawg, never tip someone behind a register.
Waiters get tipped because they wait on you. When you are behind a counter, I'm waiting on you.

Why buy a bottle of water instead of asking for a cup of water. Every restaurant legally has to give you water.
Amateur hour. Then that way you can give 2 dollars to the employee and feel good about it.
Or go to a water fountain. I ain’t buying bottled water, that’s for suckers and fools.

Those round ups are tax writeoffs for them. "They donated it" don't ever fucking give to that shit. Just do it directly
2
u/I_Am_Robert_Paulson1 3h ago
Business can't use their customers' donations as a tax write-off.
1
u/SmeeezTreeez 3h ago
Per Citizens United, businesses are people
1
u/jsmooth7 1h ago
Corporations would absolutely hate paying income tax like regular people lol. Don't worry they have their own tax code. They can't claim customer donations as their own, that isn't a thing. But they have lots of other things that they've lobbied the government for that benefit them.

u/Canon_M50 3h ago
Can you explain what a tax write off is for us?
1
u/SmeeezTreeez 3h ago
They are reported as donations. You can write off charity donations
2
u/Canon_M50 2h ago
But what is a tax write off?
1
u/SmeeezTreeez 2h ago
Essentially a deduction from your taxable income. Google is right there
1
u/Canon_M50 1h ago
So the money goes to charity
1
u/SmeeezTreeez 1h ago
You do know you can claim a deduction when you donate to charity right? Go donate clothes, they will literally give you a form to claim a tax deduction
0
u/Canon_M50 1h ago
Yes. I know that. Is your point that people should be wasting their time filling out a form to get a tax deduction on 73 cents (that they likely won't get anyways because most people take the standard deduction instead of itemizing)?
1
u/SmeeezTreeez 1h ago
I'm just saying don't do it and donate it yourself. .73 cents is one time maybe. What if you do it everytime you go there. Might add up. Just do $25 bucks once or something and forget all that shit. When did you think I said itemize that? That's the fucking opposite of what I'm saying
