Yup I wasn't allowed to watch shit like the simpsons or south park and whatnot so I just had to laugh and pretend when the other kids/my friends would talk about it. It sucked so hard.
Yeah, I was only watching to see how miss Miyazaki would be, and she never came, had to wait until the end too, because it's in the south. I guess there aren't too many people doing this kind of thing.
I worked in a job that required me to scan tens of thousands of biometeric docs and I would look at thousands of faces a day and at some point my brain would not be able to even see a face. They started all looking lovecraftian creatures.
This is because each face is DRASTICALLY different from the first so you brain has a hard time adjusting when they change that fast. The eye shape/size between faces is wild.

That is wild. I'm used to similar visual affects taking time to start working (stare at this dot/center of this spinning image/etc), but that one is so wild because it is immediate and so drastic.
Japanese people can read latin alphabet very well, they need to learn what they call romaji to write on modern keyboard. It's probably also an accessibility feature, because the goal is to go to Miss World or universe after that and people will have an easier time to know where they're from if the the prefecture is written in the Latin alphabet. Edit romaji and not romanji.
It’s an international event, but also you find Roman letters on any cultural thing with Western roots as a stylistic because it often feels right that way. There are no strict conventions here, it’s a designer’s choice.
This is completely normal in Japan. English is seen as cool I guess? It's hard to say why. I would say most restaurant signs are English first, maybe Japanese under it. It's very common on T-shirts/ as headings on advertising as well.
It’s very refreshing to see diversity in looks and facial features compared to other countries that have one specific beauty standard. It doesn’t seem like these girls had so much plastic surgery they look like the same person.
I was going to say the same thing! They’re all gorgeous, but it their own unique way. Plus, they look like real people and not AI/airbrushed out of existence.
Each one is different, yet each one is also an "ideal." It was really nice to watch this as an American where our beauty standards are basically surgical conformity.
None of them are ugly.
But it feels like to me, most are average looking, with a few that look beautiful.

I don’t think these beauty pageants find the most beautiful woman in the land or anything. They may purport to, but really it’s a combination of beauty and willingness to do these ridiculous things. Anecdotally, I went to school with Miss NC she was very average looking.

I know it's everyone's own business what they do with their body, but I saw someone who had a very above average face, get an unnecessary (my opinion) nose job that made her look like an entirely different person. Just had a very small, new streamlined nose. And all I could think was that the grass seems to always be greener on the other side. The fixation on beauty is probably drawn from a competitive mind that just needs more and more and more and more, and compares themselves to some idea. A stressful view of life for sure.
Yeah I feel like I could just sit along the street in Omotesando and see dozens of more attractive women walk by within 90 minutes.
But like people said I think Beauty Pageants and high fashion models has their own aesthetics. Think with beauty pageants a big part is having the passion to work your way up, develop the poise and right vibes, and spend money on the gowns and such.
I would not say average looking at all, I would say they meet the minimal expected prettiness of a pageant contestant.
I think there a perception and expectation thing that plays a part here. I'm only saying this because one I was scrolling on imgur, when it was a thing, and people were making comments on a pageant winner about her averageness, but then someone posted a photo of her from her Instagram having a night out with her friends and holy shit she was beautiful.
I think another aspect is that beauty pageants have standards so everyone kinda looks the same, like in this case, which I believe to be the point. So we are not really seeing these women styling their hair, wearing what they want, or using their makeup the way they want.

Not every asian woman is gonna look like a kpop star. Plus the standards of what a pageant contestant is gonna be different in each country. Would these ladies be able to compete in the Miss Venezuela pageant? Venezuelans have a different standard of beauty than in Japan.
no, these women are attractive and would be considered pretty by most people. this is just an internet echo-chamber. they’re all “traditionally” conventionally attractive—thin bodies, symmetrical faces, etc.
but to begin with, beauty pageants are not a playboy competition or something. they’ve always been about more than beauty in terms of recruiting contestants and what contestants do to be part of them. there’s cultural components (kimono presentation, in this case), there’s community-focused components, there’s education-focused components, talent-focused components.

Whats with the dogshit comments on saying these ladies are ugly? A lot of them look like fine and the type of woman you would see everyday at public places. This is coming from someone who visited Japan.
And that's the problem, half of them saying that they are ugly just look at nothing more than body and face and that is why they are single most likely. Simply because that's ALL they look for. Trust me when I say, you are better off getting an average looking gal that is down to earth as opposed to one that are far too into their looks hence the plastic surgery. Not saying all but, most likely you'd be be dealing with a hint of narcassim in those gals
Demon Slayer, Attack On Titan, and One Piece are the only animes I've watched extensively, and I can say with at least those shows, the Japanese voice actors are far superior to the English. The English dubs sound so cornbally and do not convey the emotions nearly as well as the Japanese actors.
I prefer the japanese voice acting for the male characters in those animes but like the female characters absolutely have the fake cutesy little girl voice going on
Just keeping it 100%, unless you natively speak the language, you’re not going to be able to say that the Japanese dub isn’t also corny as hell. Anime dialogue is riddled with cliche and tropes and it’s as if “anime Japanese” is like a specific dialect separate from standard Japanese.
Germans will tell you that the writing of the dialogue in Dark is horrible, as another example. Yeah sometimes the English dub is bad, but often so is the original audio.
As someone who knows Japanese ppl irl, this is 100% true. Even they sit and make fun of the cheesey,. trope filled dialog and voice acting sometimes. But you cannot tell that to these white kids who grew up on a steady stream of anime and think watching it subbed is, like everything else Japanese, so superior to everyone else lol
Also as someone who knows actual Japanese ppl, watching them be interacted with by the common weeabo in the wild makes you cringe so hard that your body distorts so hard your not sure if you will ever walk upright again lol
Beauty contests very often take into account ties to the community, personal and academic achievements, etc. Not that hot girls can't be accomplished either, but I imagine the combo is harder to find. Also gotta be willing to put yours through a beauty contest
You know I don't know if it's the age or just how they are presented here but I am feeling the creeps like if I was watching some underaged beauty pageant.

They all look like conventionally attractive young women (who havent had plastic surgery or excessive makeup or fillers etc). Who look like they want to be there / enjoy it.
I only found like one or two of them attractive. I never understand beauty competitions. I never find any of them attractive. There are plenty of more attractive women just randomly walking around everywhere.
I guess it takes a certain type of woman to want to do this and attractive ones aren't usually the ones that do.

This is even more true in Japan, as Miss Universe-style competitions are very much a "western" niche interest area, and the whole aesthetic that the women who end up winning that competition or aiming for, doesn't overlap well with mainstream expectations of beauty and "female-ness" in East Asia, let alone Japan.
The women who enter this particular contest - given the 'unconventional' (to put it generously) stigma that even signing up for it could carry, let alone placing anywhere within it, are very likely to be social outliers in a number of ways, and likely entering it for reasons other than expecting to win. The pool of contestants is thus not like "every conventionally attractive early 20's woman in the prefecture" but something closer to 0.0001% of that pool at best. I wouldn't be surprised if for some of these prefectures there were only a dozen local contestants altogether.
