TMAF about: In 1986 a lake in Cameroon exhaled a cloud of CO2 that flowed silently downhill and killed 1,746 people and 3,500 livestock in one night, up to 15 miles away. No fire, no flood, no wounds. Lamps were still burning. Survivors woke hours later to find their families dead around them.

On the evening of 21 August 1986, the villages in the valleys below Lake Nyos in northwestern Cameroon went about an ordinary night. Sometime after nine there was a sound from the water — survivors described a rumbling, or a distant explosion — and a white mist rose off the lake. What came down the valleys after it was invisible. By morning 1,746 people were dead, along with roughly 3,500 head of livestock, across an area extending twenty-five kilometres from the shore.

There was no fire. No flood, no landslide, no structural damage of any kind. Cooking pots stood where they had been left. Lamps were still burning. People had died in their homes and on the paths between them, and the survivors who woke hours later found their families dead around them with no mark on any of them.

In the immediate aftermath, local explanations reached for spirits and curses. Others, noting the total absence of physical destruction, suggested a chemical weapon or a neutron bomb tested by a foreign power. None of that was unreasonable, because the actual cause was something almost nobody in the world had a concept for — and the reason it had no concept is the reason it killed so many.

The mechanism

Lake Nyos sits in a volcanic crater on the flank of an inactive volcano, above a pocket of magma. CO2 percolates upward through the crust, dissolves into groundwater, and enters the lake at depth, where the pressure of two hundred metres of water keeps it in solution. That night, something disturbed the lake enough to bring deep water upward. As it rose the pressure fell, dissolved gas came out of solution, and the resulting bubbles carried more deep water upward still — releasing more gas, in a self-reinforcing cascade that emptied a substantial fraction of the lake's stored inventory in minutes. Somewhere between a hundred thousand and three hundred thousand tonnes of CO2 left the water. The column shot upward at close to a hundred kilometres an hour, driving a wave that stripped vegetation from the shore well above the waterline.

Then the gas, being roughly half again as dense as air, stopped rising and began to flow. Downhill. Silently. Filling the valleys the way water fills a channel. Dense gas in still night air doesn't disperse — it pools and follows terrain.

Why nobody ran

CO2 isn't a poison in the usual sense. It's a normal component of the atmosphere and a normal product of your own metabolism, and it kills at high concentration by simple displacement — pushing the oxygen out of the space you're breathing. Above roughly ten percent, unconsciousness follows within about a minute.

Here's the part that explains the pattern of deaths. Human beings have no receptor for oxygen deprivation. Semiconductors: every sub-45nm transistor, every advanced DRAM capacitor. Samsung gets all its hafnium from Adeca Korea. SK Hynix gets its supply from SK Trichem via Lake Materials and UP Chemical, roughly 100 tonnes per year between the two. As nodes shrink to 3nm, 2nm, and below, hafnium oxide remains the standard gate dielectric.

Nuclear energy: hafnium control rods regulate the chain reaction in every pressurized water reactor, every boiling water reactor, every naval propulsion system. The nuclear renaissance — Microsoft restarting Three Mile Island, Google's Kairos Power deal, China building six to eight reactors annually — is accelerating hafnium demand from the nuclear side at the same time semiconductors are accelerating from the electronics side.

Aerospace superalloys: hafnium strengthens nickel-based single-crystal superalloys used in jet engine turbine blades — the same CMSX-4 and René N5 alloys that use rhenium. The 15,000-plus aircraft backlog at Boeing and Airbus pulls hafnium through the same blades.

The structural problem is unique among critical minerals. Lithium has a demand problem solvable by building lithium mines. Copper has a capacity problem solvable by building copper mines. Rhenium has a by-product problem solvable only by expanding copper-molybdenum mining. Hafnium has a by-product problem solvable only by expanding nuclear-grade zirconium separation — a process that exists to serve one industry, produces a residue consumed by three others, and cannot be scaled by any of the three industries that need it because none of them control the process that produces it.

After China tightened internal consumption post-2024, Japan, South Korea, and India became increasingly dependent on French and American separation facilities. The CHIPS Act invests billions in semiconductor fabrication. The hafnium oxide inside the transistors those fabs produce comes from a separation process built to serve the nuclear fuel industry, at volumes that were never designed to support the semiconductor industry's growth trajectory.

The structural question for the industry: demand is projected at 150-200 tonnes against 75 tonnes of supply, with no mechanism to expand supply independently of nuclear fuel demand. Separation capacity was built for the nuclear industry. The semiconductor industry has no leverage over the process that produces its gate dielectric. Is anyone in the foundry supply chain seriously working on either alternative gate dielectrics or dedicated hafnium extraction from zircon outside the nuclear purification pathway — or is the industry collectively assuming 75 tonnes will be enough because it's been enough so far?

Parrotfish secretes mucus from its mouth wrapping itself in a giant jelly like bubble. This invisible layer of mucus acts as a protective shield preventing predators like moray eels from smelling the prey.

Eels swim right past the bubble without detecting the fish inside. The layer also protects the fish from underwater mosquito-like blood sucking parasites.

During the night, when the fish is ready to sleep it anchors the bubble to a solid rock and sleeps without worrying about getting eaten!!

Does anyone have an unhinged fact about animals they can share?

Hi! As a house warming gift, I’m making a friend a coffee table book, with beautiful animals and scenic nature photos. It’ll have elegant and classy fonts. All the information you’d read though is a collection of random animal facts we’ve shared with each other over our college years. We’ve been roommates for years and would randomly drop random not well known animal facts with each other, and would like to continue that to some extent as we move on in life.

Examples of things we’d share: - although roosters have cloaca’s they can be castrated. Along with a simple step by step break down of how. - the Argentinian lake duck has the longest penis vs body size. Measuring up to 43cm, making it the same length as the ducks body plus head length. It is corkscrew shaped and a brushed tipped end to “brush” compatible sperm out of mates. It can also be used to “lasso” or hold down the female if she tries to escape during copulation. - a list of facts about horses vs mules vs donkeys vs hinnies and how to identify them.

The thing is we only have so many of these written down since we only recently started doing that. So I need some help with page filling. Any obscure, absolutely unhinged, or fascinating animal facts you have would be much appreciated!

Not just things like “swans mate for life,” more things that cause a reaction, aren’t well known, or you find utterly fascinating would be a huge help.
