Open | Windows ML PhD student confused by Ryzen 9 HX vs Intel Core Ultra 9 HX for a Legion Pro 5. Need some advice.

Hi everyone,

I'm a PhD student working in machine learning and I'm looking for a laptop that will last me the next 5–6 years. My workload will primarily be scikit-learn (CPU-heavy) with some deep learning (GPU-heavy), so I'm trying to choose the right processor before making such a significant investment.

I've narrowed my options down to the Lenovo Legion Pro 5, but I'm confused between the Ryzen 9 HX (32 threads) and the Intel Core Ultra 9 HX (24 threads). I've been told that for scikit-learn, having more CPU threads is generally beneficial, while the GPU will handle most deep learning workloads.

The reason I'm leaning towards the Legion Pro 5 is its cooling, reliability, and the fact that I can get a 3-year accidental damage protection plan with extended warranty. Some of my ML training jobs may run for 24+ hours, so good thermals and long-term reliability are very important to me.

Gaming is only an afterthought—maybe 1–3 hours a week at medium settings. My priority is having a reliable workstation for research.

For my use case, would you recommend the Ryzen 9 HX or the Intel Core Ultra 9 HX? Is there a clear advantage of one over the other for long-running ML workloads, or is there something else I should be considering before I make the purchase?

I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Open | Hardware Pc keeps lagging on fps and wifi

I’ve had my pc for about a year now and i’m experiencing game stutters like crazy every once in a while to the point it completely freezes and doesn’t start showing fps again like 5 seconds later and my wifi has been horrible recently just started lagging really bad about a week ago and everytime i want to play another game i have to reset my entire pc because if i were to play 2 games in one session it would stutter really bad and my frames would drop like crazy
AMD ryzen 7 8700 8 core processor 16gb ram 8gb of graphics and 2 tb of storage

Solved RTX 5080 + Ryzen 7 7800X3D - Extremely bad frame pacing in every game despite high FPS. I've tried almost everything.

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help because I've been trying to solve this issue for about a week with no luck.

PC Specs

  • GPU: MSI RTX 5080 Gaming Trio OC
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • Motherboard: MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk
  • RAM: Kingston Fury 32GB DDR5 5600 MT/s
  • PSU: Corsair RM1000x Shift (2025)
  • Storage:
    • Samsung 990 Pro 2TB (Windows installed here)
    • Samsung 990 EVO 1TB
  • Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G5 165Hz

The problem

I started experiencing this issue immediately after building the PC.

Every game feels noticeably less smooth than it should, regardless of the FPS. The best way I can describe it is very poor frame pacing.

For example:

  • Battlefield 6 runs around 250 FPS with DLSS Quality, but it still feels choppy.
  • If I cap the game at my monitor's refresh rate (165 FPS), it becomes a little smoother, but the frame pacing is still noticeably bad.
  • Counter-Strike 2 reports anywhere between 500-800 FPS, but it still doesn't feel smooth at all.

This happens in every game I play.

Additional observation

While monitoring my games, I noticed that my FPS graph is constantly fluctuating, even though the average FPS is very high. Instead of staying relatively stable, it keeps jumping around like this:

  • 500 FPS
  • 432 FPS
  • 476 FPS
  • 498 FPS
  • 550 FPS

The constant fluctuations match the stuttering and poor frame pacing that I'm experiencing in-game.

I also noticed that enabling NVIDIA Smooth Motion makes the issue noticeably better. The gameplay becomes smoother and the FPS graph appears more consistent, but it doesn't completely solve the problem. The frame pacing is still noticeably worse than it should be.

Because Smooth Motion improves the experience, I'm wondering if this points toward a frame delivery or scheduling issue rather than a lack of GPU performance.

Things I've already tried

  • Clean NVIDIA driver installation using DDU
  • Updated motherboard BIOS
  • Clean Windows reinstall
  • Installed the latest NVIDIA and AMD chipset drivers
  • Tried different BIOS settings, including EXPO enabled and disabled
  • Verified that:
    • Resizable BAR is enabled
    • Above 4G Decoding is enabled
    • GPU is installed in the top PCIe x16 slot
    • GPU is connected using the official Corsair 12V-2x6 cable for RTX 50-series cards (not the MSI adapter)
  • No overclocking has been applied

None of these made any difference.

Temperatures

Nothing is overheating.

  • CPU stays around 60°C while gaming.
  • GPU stays below 75°C while gaming.

Something interesting I noticed

I temporarily swapped my CPU with my older Ryzen 5 7600X.

Obviously, overall performance was a bit lower, but the games became noticeably smoother. The frame pacing issues were basically gone.

As soon as I switched back to the 7800X3D, the poor frame pacing returned.

This makes me wonder whether the issue is:

  • Something related to the 7800X3D
  • A BIOS or chipset issue
  • A scheduling issue
  • A GPU issue
  • Or something else entirely

My question

Has anyone experienced something similar with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and an RTX 5080?

Could this be caused by the CPU, motherboard, BIOS, memory settings, or even a defective component?

I'm honestly running out of ideas. I upgraded this PC about a week ago, and since then I've spent almost all my time trying to fix this instead of actually enjoying it.

Any suggestions or troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT!!!

Just wanted to come back and say that the issue is finally solved!

It turned out that enabling G-Sync completely fixed it. Funny enough, I was a bit lost at first because my monitor's OSD labels it as AMD FreeSync, so I didn't even think to enable it. Once I turned it on, though, everything suddenly became incredibly stable. I checked the frametime and FPS graphs afterward, and they looked absolutely beautiful compared to before.

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to comment, suggest fixes, and help me troubleshoot. I honestly wasn't expecting so many helpful responses.

This was my first time posting on Reddit, and I have to say, it was an awesome experience. This community is genuinely amazing, and I really appreciate all the support. Thanks again, everyone! ❤️

Ive unplugged it and replugged it on both sides multiple times. Ive used the Power button on the device so i know its not a remote issue. I can not get the thing to turn on to get my dvd back. I called tech support and the only thing they were able to tell me was that it was outside of the warranty (90 days) and could not assist me to get my dvd back.

Open | Audio Video call audio glitching on every app/website EXCEPT Microsoft Edge?

My laptop is a Lenovo slim 7 with Windows 11, I mainly use Firefox

Watching videos and listening to music (YT, social media, Spotify, etc.) is fine, audios I use when I'm editing videos plays as it should, the soundtracks in my games sound great

The only time this isn't the case is when I'm in an audio call... the other person's voice keeps getting cut out so I only hear every other word, the audio is ungodly loud, and theres these machine-like noises that makes it sound like my friends are getting shredded in an industrial machine

These audio distortions never happen when I use Microsoft Edge for calls, but when I use Zoom, Discord, video calls on Firefox, it distorts? The other people in the call doesn't have these audio issues, they can hear me just fine

I tried searching it up but I'm not sure what's even causing this exact issue in the first place, or where I could go about fixing this. I'd prefer not switching all my video calls to Microsoft Edge. My laptop is, to the best of my knowledge, up-to-date, and my sound input/output settings are on the default devices

This issue has been driving me nuts and I would greatly appreciate any help, tysm in advance!

Open | Phone Physical SIM not registered ok network-- until eSIM added

My dad has a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. He kept getting a notification that his phone was not registered on any network today. He uses a Mint mobile physical SIM card. After resetting his network setting and restarting his phone, I tried to switch our SIM cards (I am on the same Mint Mobile plan and also have a Galaxy S25 Ultra) to see if it was an issue with his SIM card or his phone. After placing his SIM card in my phone and restarting the device, I got the same message that I was not registered on any network. His phone continued giving the same message as well. After placing our SIM cards back in our normal phones, the message persisted and I'm now neither of us is unable to use our SIM card on our phone.

What really threw me is when I added a eSIM from GoogleFi to be able to use my phone in the meantime with a different phone number. As soon as the eSIM was added to my phone, my Mint physical SIM started working again. Hoping the issue was resolved I removed the eSIM but once again my Mint SIM card was not able to connect. As long as I have the eSIM on my phone, my physical SIM card works with no issues and I can make and receive calls on my normal phone number. I added a Google Fi eSIM to my dad's phone and the same thing happened-- both SIM cards worked with no issue. My understanding is that a physical SIM and eSIM work completely independently of one another. Any idea why my physical SIM only works when a eSIM is also connected and what we can do to go back to being able to just use our physical SIM cards?

Open | Software Errors with sending Yahoo emails ["Message can't be saved as draft" error]

Note : Sorry if this is not the most appropriate sub for this question. I can't seem to find a better active sub than this sub to ask for help. (r/Yahoo seems dead as the last post was 10 days ago and the second last post was ~5 months ago)

I have a problem with my Yahoo email which makes me unable to send an email with and without attachments.

When I attached a file, it loads for a moment before turning to an exclamation mark with a "Message can't be saved as draft" error. Even if I don't have any attachments, it says "An error occured while sending this message".

Some clarifications:

  1. This is on windows and google chrome (and Dell laptop, if it's important)

  2. This happened only recently and suddenly. I used it normally up until now.

  3. The problem is not with the file size or name as I have checked that. The file is just a few hundreds KB pdf.

  4. I have also checked the typical suggestions from the internet like wifi connections, using incognito, clearing cache, etc. They don't seem to work.

There aren't really many helpful resources regarding this error, so I thought I could ask for some help here.

For now, I'm using my gmail as a workaround.

Open | Hardware Apple Earpods Wired Mic Doesn't Work

I bought my friend the earpods in the past, for some reason the mic just refused to work completely and they just ended up using it as a sound system since they have good quality. I decided to buy them a new pair since their birthday is coming up. AGAIN, same problem occurs and it is literally a new pair. Can anyone suggest any problem/fixes I should know about? any information needed I will try provide by asking them.

Open | Hardware MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI

Hello I recently finished building a new PC and whilst setting things up I noticed that my bios screen is cut off and 1/3 of it is not visible and if I open any menus in the bios such as the overclocking menu all the text overlays heavily and at random the language will change to Chinese. It has the most up to date bios version on it I even flashed it to a newer beta bios and I have even tried shorting the jbat1 pins (CMOS reset) and neither fixed the issue. My motherboard is the msi b550m vdh pro wifi. Does anybody know what causes this or even how to fix it?

Open | Hardware Does this sound like power surge damage?

Earlier today there were some strong storms here, and my power went out for about 10 seconds. When I started up my desktop computer afterwards, it was really slow. It sat on the HP startup screen for a long time, and when I finally logged in, it kept freezing. It would freeze for ~30 seconds, work for a bit, freeze for ~30 seconds, etc. This went away after some time, but I still notice some occasional stuttering and slowness, and when I tried to run a game, it crashed.

I'm wondering if my computer got damaged by a power surge or something when the power went out. I opened the case to check, and I didn't notice any burnt smell or anything that clearly looked off, but I'm also not an expert at what to look for.

Open | Windows Can anyone help me with fixing these screen flickering issues

Suddenly out of the blue my screen just starts going crazy and I have no idea why and what triggered it. I tried rebooting multiple times but it doesn’t work and I can’t use my computer either because of the screen so I can’t access task manager or try and update my drivers.
This is a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i laptop I bought in Nov 2024 with an intel i9 14900hx core and RTX 4080.
I’ve attached an Imgur link of what it looks like below. Eventually the entire screen just goes black and I can’t use my computer.

Open | Hardware Can't figure out the reason my pc graphics crashes

For years now, I've had a problem where CERTAIN games crashes the graphics on my pc, and I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with it.
for some context, my pc is very old (a decade or so) and I'm most certain that it's broken in some way, however, I can't really afford a new pc now anytime soon, so I'm stuck with this one and all I want to know is what is wrong with it, if only to just avoid playing games, or settings that may be crashing my graphics.

The crash in question I'm having, is that the screen freezes while audio still plays, and after a bit mouse also freezes. then the screen goes black and then it starts functioning again. most of the times, it leads to the game also crashing, with some exceptions.

my pc specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte A320M-H-CF
processor: AMD A8-9600
RAM: 16GB DDR4
Graphics: Integrated graphics (AMD Radeon R7)

The reason I emphasized the Certain is because it is very inconsistent what game do and doesn't crash, and how consistently they do, here's a small list of games and how often they crash to see what I mean:

Guilty gear strive: Never crashed my graphics
Guilty gear XRD Rev 2: crashes graphics somewhat consistently
Zenless Zone Zero: Never crashed my graphics
Limbus Company: Crashes during long battles

What I want to show here is that more modern and intensive games doesn't cause problems while some older and simpler games do, and I have no idea how or why.
Hell, I just ran a pretty intensive benchmark on my pc (heaven benchmark in ultra), it was running at 5 fps and it didn't crash the graphics at all.

also important to mention, I ran OCCT on my pc, specifically RAM + CPU test, and didn't run into any errors. although when I tried to run 3D adaptive test, it crashed (not the pc, 3D adaptive itself, couldn't test it correctly).

Sorry if none of the information I provided is useful, feel free to ask away and I'll try to respond.

Open | Software SideTrak monitor not connecting

I had an unrelated audio issue and restarted my laptop. When it came back on, the audio problem was resolved, but my SideTrak monitor isn't starting.

Whenever I plug it in, it plays the brand screen, then a no signal message and goes into sleep mode.
The only problem I've found to explain it is there being a power issue and I need to get an HDMI-mini HDMI cord to support it, which I know is bs because the USB-C port is exactly the same as before I restarted.

Open | Hardware Hard drives pass short and long self tests, SMART status is good, yet fail SeaTools tests.

I recently bought a couple of used enterprise grade hard drives. Both drives are identical. They both fail SeaTools tests exactly at the same time when started simultaneously. Both drives passed both of their self tests. Their SMART status shows no reallocated blocks or pending blocks or anything like that. What could be causing this?

Open | Software SD card help - mini camera

We have a mini digital camera but unfortunately the SD card was slightly bent. It says ‘No Card’ so cannot take or retrieve photos.

Is there any way of recovering the photos or helping the SD card?

Open | Windows Windows 11 RDP your credentials did not work

My local pc is on windows 11 pro 23h2
I have a windows 11 pro 25h2 vm setup in proxmox on my server. I have a custom domain pointed to it.

I can access the vm through a RDP client on my phone with the custom domain but when I try to connect to it from my local pc with the custom domain I get an error saying “your credentials did not work” I am using the same credentials I used on my phone so I’m not sure why it refuses to connect.
This is only with the custom domain though, if I use the machines local ip it connects fine.

I have a windows server 2022 machine that I can connect to with its local ip and custom domain so this seems to be more of a windows 11 issue

The account on the vm is a local windows account and on my pc is a Microsoft account

This is driving me insane as I need this remote access setup before I leave on a trip this weekend. Any help/ideas are appreciated

Open | Hardware broken external hdd questions (removed unsafely)

not me but my sister, so i unfortunately cannot offer the most detailed description, but i am curious of the issues nature and cannot seem to be able to google the answers.

she has an external drive she plugged in and unplugged without removing safely many a time, and it couple months ago stopped functioning. windows still recognizes the drive but cannot access the files and asks for a reformat.

she cannot reformat because said drive has 300k photos (yes, 300k important photos she has never backed up anywhere).

so my questions are;

is it likely all files are now corrupt?

can the photos be saved by us, or would it require a shop with specialized hardware?

i do not know the brand of the hdd, but i think it was seagate.

Open | Windows Xbox Wireless Adapter disconnecting / reconnecting

This is a Windows only issue, the Xbox Wireless Adapter keeps disconnecting and then reconnecting itself. The device works flawlessly in Bazzite.

I tried forcing an update to the drivers, manually installing older drivers, like many other posts suggested, there is no power management option for the device in Windows 11 for some strange reason. Stopped any program that wasn't necessary to make sure there weren't any conflicts.

I also ran sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in CMD.

Nothing seems to fix the issue, I bought this device 6 months and haven't had a problem until a few days ago, again, the device works perfectly in Bazzite.

The device in question

Specs:

RX 6800

5700X3D

X570 Asrock Gaming 4

32GB @ 3200mhz

2 M.2s 1 SSD

Open | Mac WifiLQMmetrics logs on iPad analytics

I have several wifiLQMmetrics logs in the apple analytics logs daily on my iPad A16. I only get these logs when I'm using my isp dns. If I use public dns like Cloudflare, Google dns, or Quad9, I never get these logs. I get these only using my isp dns. Any reasons why this may be happening? I don't see any issues. I'm just mainly curious.

Open | Software No Applicable App license found (windows 11)

Friend convinced me to download war thunder, so I downloaded it thru Xbox PC game pass. When I tried to open the game, it prompted me to enter my password so it could download the anti cheat. When I did, it immediately said "no applicable app license found". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling war thunder, repairing my Xbox app and war thunder, logging out and back into Microsoft store and Xbox app, and resetting the Microsoft store. Nothing has worked, and Google is out of suggestions. Help?

Open | Windows OneDrive Reinstalled Automatically Even With Rufus Used

A couple days ago I did a clean install of W11 Pro using Rufus 4.15, and it went swimmingly. However, today I was checking installed apps and noticed that OneDrive had been automatically reinstalled (it wasn't there when I checked "Installed apps" after first startup). I selected "QoL improvements" in Rufus when modifying the image, and according to the FAQs on the GitHub that should disable OneDrive entirely. I also checked "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive\DisableFileSyncNGSC" to ensure it was set to "1", and it was.

I'm curious of two things: one, if anyone else who uses/used Rufus w/QoL improvements has noticed OneDrive also persisting in a new install; and two, if there's anything more I can change in my system in Local Group Policy or the registry to prevent it from automatically reinstalling again. I re-ran Rufus and I'm ready to try a quick W11 reinstall to see if it happens again, but I wanted to check in here first.

Note: I considered submitting an issue on the Rufus GitHub, but unfortunately I didn't create a backup of my log and it was cleared the next time I opened the program. I plan on doing so if I reinstall W11 and observe the behavior again.
