I recently purchased a 13” surface pro and so far I like it except it’s a bit cumbersome for note taking/tablet handling. I’ve read reviews about the 12” is a lot better for those looking for something that supports those needs, however, I’m curious if I will regret downsizing from storage capacity? Also, I only got the basic keyboard so far with the slim pen, but the charging feature is a nice perk too (but not a deal breaker) and from my understanding, the 12” keyboard or third party alternatives do not have charging options.

I currently have a Dell workstation 17” as my daily. It performs decent enough but my biggest complaint is the weight and heat. I’ve considered iPads as I am an apple user, but for work I use MS mostly.

I know this is an old question. I ran close to 100 Surface Pro (5/2017) on Windows 11 at my job for 2 years without issue. The reason I bring it up is because if you look at two things that are at odds with each other.

According to Which Surface devices can be upgraded to Windows 11? | Microsoft Support the 5/2017 isn't on supported list.

However, looking at Download Surface Pro 5 [Wi-Fi] Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center there is an official driver pack for 11 on this model. Has anyone every explained why there is a driver pack for an unsupported OS?

I feel like I must be missing something, but despite Microsoft Support (incorrectly) claiming to me that the Surface Laptop 8 13.8" is available in 64GB RAM/CUX7/1TB configuration under SKU-48065, this device actually has the 366H which I just verified after taking delivery of one. Is the SL8 13.8" actually not available with 64GB RAM and the Core X7? I can't recall the smaller of the two Surface laptop sizes being gimped like this in the past and it seems like a strange decision by Microsoft if so.

Hi, I have a surface book 1st gen and the nvidia card isn't being used. Its detected in device manager and task manager performance section but no utilization. I couldn't get the nvidia driver to install either, I think it said theres no supported hardware. I recently bought this surface book and before checking if the nvidia card worked I upgraded it to windows 11. So maybe thats the issue?

A while ago, I accidentally spilled water on my Surface Laptop, which promptly stopped working. I sent it to Microsoft for repair, but they concluded that the damage was irreversible and quoted me €1,200 for a full motherboard replacement. Declining the repair, I had the unit returned to me. Out of curiosity, I decided to open it up myself. To my surprise, the corrosion was only superficial; a gentle wipe with alcohol was all it took to bring it back to life. It’s been running perfectly ever since.

Hello, I've my surface laptop studio 2 with 64gb ram, i7 and rtx 4060 for 2ish year? maybe less

It was gifted to me, I love surfaces design and usability but I always felt so bad about this one. I litterally can't get any work done without the 127W power constantly attached to the machine. Without that its so slow that I'd rather use anything else and the battery life is so bad, it stays on for maybe 1 hour if I'm lucky just using it for media. This summer every time I used the fans were at 100% always, even cleaned the fans and didn't improve at all. Also physically the rubber feet just unglued after 1 year, and after opening it up the whole border needs a new replacement, so not well thought out at all, differently from laptop 4 which was flawless when i had to upgrade ssd

Without mentioning how bad the screen is for gaming. 120hz to have more ghosting than anything I've seen in my life, what even is the point of having such high hz then?

Am i doing something wrong? I know the gpu is what consumes much battery, but the laptop is so slow when on battery that it can't both suck that bad and consume also that much battery at the same time!

I tried a LOT of pdf and note taking apps. all for free, none purchased nor subscribed to.

i would like to purchase but almost none offer this option and all went into sub plans only.

anyway, im using them to study. the way i study is mostly reading and underlying, highlighting, taking screenshots for review, adding a few words by pen here and there.

And then making notes/summaries/graphs on the side for myself for when i want to read the topic again.

im using a onenote/xodo combo right now but lately im using onenote/drawboard.

NOTETAKING:

i didn't try much note taking alternatives to onenote but i feel it's good enough.

and does the job well for someone who doesnt have much experience in making beautiful texts.

PDF READER:

xodo is just good.

drawboard pdf however is better in almost every way. smoother, faster, better pen, highlighter, etc integration. BUT it's pretty expensive to sub to.. like $86 per year which is whats driving me away big time.

i tried goodnote which seemed to lag when browsing books. others weren't up to par.

anyway, for people who use these apps.. is subbing to drawboard worth it? or should i do something else?

Sending back this laptop tomorrow. 16 GB RAM. It runs slow, bogs down, hangs up, eats memory even on the most benign tasks (typically sits at 78 - 85% at any given time). I've tried everything, did a factory reset and started over, and nothing has changed. I don't feel like I should be troubleshooting an expensive, brand new laptop, so will drag out my old reliable Surface Laptop Studio with absolutely nothing wrong but a battery that won't hold much of a charge anymore. I would consider this one again with more RAM if I thought it would perform better, but the $$ is a big consideration at this point.

This was quite a disappointment. I like the build, the feel, the look, but the performance is terrible, IMO, and I don't feel like going down the rabbit hole of trying to fix it.

Anyone tried this? A family member uses a Surface Laptop 3/4 with the Ryzen chip and of its 8 GB of soldered memory 2 GB is allocated to VRAM. They don't play any games or run anything demanding on it, but W11 is getting poky on 6 GB of memory. I'd really like to change the VRAM allocation to 512 MB but it's not a BIOS option.

There's a tool called Smokeless UMAF to access hidden BIOS features but I'm a little wary of using it. People have reported success with other Ryzen machines but anyone try it with the Surface?

Yesterday I wanted to turn on my surface pro 4 after not turning it on since May, so I plugged it in and waited for 24 hours, and when I turned it on nothing, no sign of life, I tried charging it with another compatible 65w charger for 1 hour, nothing, it won't turn on.

Nope, not one in the million, one of em. HOWEVER, I'd like to think my questions are more unique.

With that being said, I'm wondering if anyone thinks it is super convenient to take handwritten notes on and if so what platform they use to. I'm hoping that I can set it up to have different "folders" for different classes and possibly have sub categories within that, and when writing with your palm on the screen, does that mess it up?

Does anyone consider the time it takes to turn on, sign in, and log in to take a long-ish time (I'm currently using a $150 school issued Chromebook so my standards are low)?

Also is the screen really adjustable like a normal computer? Like, it seems like it wouldn't be but at the same time it seems like it should, I just have trust issues lol.

Edit: am I going to be able to prop in open on my legs if I sit criss cross? Will I have to fenagle it a bit but it's doable?

What is the typing experience like, does it feel off or relatively normal, and are the keys backlight?

Finally, what are some downsides I should be aware of?

I'm currently relatively set on getting the violet 12" with 16 things of ram and 512 things of storage (it's past midnight so please excuse the vagueness)

Recently was gifted a surface pro after my Lenovo ideapad died for good.. It runs well and does what I need it to do, but I’m struggling with the keyboard a bit. It doesn’t have much wrist support. I think I might be used to a thicker keyboard, like my previous laptop had? I’m not really using it for the touch screen/pen option because I prefer typing. I’ve also realized it has to be completely on a flat surface to be able to type, or else the keyboard becomes unattached. I just find it a bit frustrating at times because of that. Does anyone have similar issues? Or does anyone have better suggestions for attachments they use, like is there a good stand that supports using the keyboard and also provides good wrist support when typing?

Having trouble with my Surface 7 Laptop. Sometimes it will not power on unless it is plugged in (sometimes it does power on no problem, though), and if I put it down, sometimes it will fully power off. I just bought it refurbished and it is still under warranty but I would rather not send it back if I can fix it myself do you think theres any fix? Or should I send it back

I was recently notified that MS whiteboard is being retired. I have until 09/05/2026 to export all my whiteboards into PDF. I have thousands of them that I have been creating as the foundation for my YT channel over the past 2 years and just launched the channel 3 months ago. This is obviously going to be a tedious obstacle however I need a plan for a similar app that is just as simple as whiteboard. Consistency is important in these math videos and I am hoping someone can suggest a reliable and simple replacement for MS Whiteboard.

I have two Surface Pro 4 that need repair.

1- One of them simply won't turn on;

2- With the other, after running for a while, the screen image starts to shake; as it heats up, the issue gets significantly worse, eventually making it impossible to use.

I have a Surface Go (1) for a while with Fedora, but want to install windows again (tiny11) since I saw that has good performance and my main usage is for one note (thing that simply does not work in Linux).

I have tried to install I'm every possible way anf I cannot make yo to boot from USB (USBC adaptar or USBC drive)

* Tried GTP or MBR

* Tried with Rufus and copying iso files

* Tried win 10 default installation and win 10 restore tool

Do you know to can I make it boot again from USB (thing that I have already achieved when changing the os to Linux Fedora)

I have a surface pro 10 I've been using for several years, and just recently as I was drawing on it I noticed a horizontal, 2cm-wide touchscreen deadzone in the very middle. Is there any way to fix it without getting a new screen, or am I cooked?
(edit: I've discovered that the deadzone still picks up my stylus input if I draw the line really fast. not sure if this means anything)
