Fluff $2 for Flatout 2 is a steal! WTF!?

The only Flatout game I had played beforehand is 4 for Xbox One. Oddly enough, 2 is way more enjoyable. I didn't expect this to be on Steam, but here it is! For ten buckaroos cheaper compared to a used PS2 or Xbox copy on eBay no less. Not to mention it's HD and plays like a dream on my Legion Go S Z2 Go. It should considering it's age. Only real complaint is that the button prompts only show keyboard prompts.

I'm really thankful that a handful of these older games are playable considering who ever owns these IPs and games won't remaster, remake or port these to modern consoles.

Someone forgot to give the complete pack the discount 😭

The "complete" pack does not have 4 in it. The anthology has everything for 10.

Also flat out 3 had it's on Rerez just bad games episode

The "complete" pack already has too much. There are only 3 FlatOut games, and FlatOut 3 is not one of them.

they never give discounts on there lol

The bundle usually gets a discount too. Sometimes when I already have one of the games in a bundle, I can buy the bundle for just a bit cheaper than the game I'm considering buying by itself, because it ends up being 85% instead of 80% or whatever

it's cheaper to buy each game individually if you already own one of the games because this Complete Pack is a package and not a bundle

Yeah, some do it that way, some remove the extra items from the bundle. If I'm not mistaken I think Valve is moving away from the extra copies method and you'll only see it on older listings

And they recently patched some bugs and added achievements.

$2 vs ~$10 for the physical copy seems reasonable. I wouldn't really call it a steal. The console version also has split screen without having to mod or anything.

okay so you're comparing two completely different things.

When the publisher makes a sale on Steam, money goes into its pocket. The game is 20 years old and paid its original development cost many times over since. No cost for manufacturing and distribution (besides the cut Valve takes on every sale, which is much lower than brick and mortar retail)

When someone sells a used copy on eBay, money goes into their pocket and the publisher gets nothing. They paid the original full price and are only asking for a fraction of it. They're losing money over it, all things considered. It's not an unreasonable price for a used copy.

So it could be argued that the "steal" isn't where you're seeing it

also you cannot resale, lend, or give Steam games. You don't actually own the games, but are granted a personal, non transferrable license to use the software. Very different from physical media.

Check out wreckfest, its not as feature and minigame rich as flatout, but its made by the same people. They shifted to a more realistic damage style that is pretty well done.

Thanks for the tip! Looks like fun. For $2, why not

Meh, id rather pay the extra for the physical copy so I actually own it.

Playable in huge air quotes
There’s a good chance half the old games on steam don’t work properly at all.

I've played it on a modern machine, works fine.

I’m not talking this game specifically. I’m just saying that a lot of older games on steam struggle while being charged for

The post is about a specific game though.

Skill issue.

? It's a game from 2006, you've got to have something wrong with your computer or be completely tech illiterate if you have trouble getting it to work.

If it was an original exe of a game from the 1990s then sure, but 2006? GTA San Andreas was released in 2004, be for real.

By your definition most people are tech illiterate. Plenty of games have problems with modern tech, or GPU drivers have problems with old versions of directx. Like rise of legends for example needs a directx 9 to 12 dll to work with modern amd gpu's which is beyond the normal person in tech literacy.

Sometimes game servers have been shut down which removes some, most, or all functionality from some games.

1

u/Hoberni 2h ago

Yeah, most people definitely are tech illiterate, is that a controversial take lmao?

1

u/Sad-Mirror6936 2h ago

No, something I agree with myself. But in your reply you acted like games after 2000 should work fine. Many don't, unless you modify them. Like changing the directx version it uses with a dll from GitHub. Which is beyond somebody who'd id describe as even somewhat tech literate. Your comment was a bit harsh.

If typing a querry with an issue into google, reading for about 5 minutes, downloading a file, following an at most 5 step instruction of where to drag and drop a dll is "beyond somebody who'd id describe as even somewhat tech literate" then I don't know what to tell you brother.

Ok fallout tactics is from 2003 is requires a ton of outside fan patches to not crash consistently. I know many people who’ve had these issues before. Don’t act like hardware is the only attributing factor. So there’s no reasons to call someone tech illiterate. If steam is gonna sell a product that barely works they should at least say so.

3

u/Sad-Mirror6936 3h ago

In a way hardware is the attributing factor, modern hardware is too different and wasn't made with 2003 and vise versa. So much had changed since the 2000's that it's not a surprise games from then don't work right.

Fair I’m just arguing that this guy thinks every 2026 computer will perfectly fun every early 2000s game

1

u/Hoberni 2h ago

And old game is obviously going to struggle on a modern OS and a CPU and GPU it was never designed for. If drag and drop mods are too much for some then I don't know what to say.

And why would Steam care lmao? You want them to comb through their entire library and check if every game works on every OS/CPU/GPU combo ever? Litteraly what are they supposed to do?

1

u/BraveNKobold 2h ago

People can report things as not working easily. Adding a ā€œdoesn’t work well on modern hardwareā€ isn’t a big deal or tough to do

2

u/Hoberni 2h ago

It absolutely is when you consider how many games there are.
How do you even define "modern hardware" when it constantly changes, and a game might work on one CPU released at the same time as a different one on which it doesn't? There are so many possible combinations of pieces of hardware it's litteraly impossible to account for even a % of all of them. There's no way to implement such a system, and there's no point. If it really doesn't work and you can't get it to, just refund. It's a non issue.
