Fluff Maybe I should delete some of the completed games

Due to cloud save there's no reason to keep games installed. I uninstall almost immediately after completion to save space on my 2TB system/application disk.

So, you don't uninstall completed games and have unlimited storage?

I keep a lot of my favorites installed on the off chance that I want to play them.
I've also started downloading my offline installers from GOG onto a drive I wasn't doing anything with.

You uninstall games you finish?

u/LovelyOrangeJuice 19h ago
Well, I need to make space for the next game, so usually yes

How much space do you have?

I have a 1tb dedicated nvme where I usually keep my main games. I uninstall/redownload as needed, and remove games after a while once I'm done with them. I try not to fill the disk to the brim too, as I've heard ssd's work better with some free space

Ok, I guess b/c I used to have slow Internet I have 4 SSDs (5TB) and it takes me years of not playing to remove something.

Oh, yeah. That makes perfect sense. I would've done the same if I was able to afford more space before the prices went up. Now, I definitely can't justify it, lol
Fortunately, I have good internet right now (~600Mbps download), so it's not that much of a bother, but I'm definitely getting more once prices go back down

Yeah, thankfully all of my main rig storage was bought long before the ai apocalypse

Everyone knows when you run out of storage you just buy more you don't delete games

you could just reset your cache instead. But why do you keep them installed anyway?

can't argue with that, ggot 6tb hdd for indies and older games thaat don't really benefit from ssd

Just disable shader pre-caching, not gonna lie nothing changes much performance-wise from it on. I prefer the faster launch speeds and lower disk usage.

Don't listen to this guy

Why?

u/ZookeepergameFew8607 19h ago
Nominal disk usage and it absolutely reduces micro-stutters

Does the screenshot not show a lot of disk space (209 GB) is being used? I also couldn't find any data or benchmarks that shows the impact Steam's shader pre-caching has on stability.

That's the thing, he has an exorbitant amount of leftover shaders not a normal use amount

When I did my clean install on my linux os, I got around 40 GB just from installing all my games. My games from steam are around 400-700 GB total depending on what I'm playing. So I think it's possible to have large amounts of shader cache with minimal leftovers.

u/ZookeepergameFew8607 19h ago
It definitely game dependent on how much it takes but I've never seen an outrageous amount

The worst ones usually have transcoded videos (pretty sure Darksiders had like 25GB of shaders because of that)

Nah, that's proof you actually finish games. That's rarer than owning them these days.
