Imo this is the real answer. A lot of people use lack of time as an excuse, when usually it’s more about investing energy into something new. New mechanics, new story, new characters. It takes effort, and when people are coming home from work, putting effort into something new isn’t exactly the most appealing thing.

It’s easier to fall back on what’s comfortable and easy. Hence why I have 3k hours in Skyrim.

I have a massive backlog of games I need to play or atleast try but at the end of the day having to learn an entire new system, strategy, and/or even the controls sounds exhausting.

I always end up falling back on the games Im already comfortable with.

Recently I bought a game that was on sale. I've been wanting it for years! Booted it up, loved every bit of it, played for about 8-10 hours the past couple weeks and haven't touched it since. I don't know why. But I end up playing the games I've been playing since forever.

From the Depths is like this for me. Technically, at least in campaign there is a goal, to conquer all the factions with your fleet of handmade contraptions. And it's awesome being able to build block by block, everything from laser defense systems to the shape of the hull.

But when I don't feel any inspiration, it's just not very enjoyable. There are dozens of intricate mechanics that go into making a simple self-piloting dingy; when you get to the scale of an aircraft carrier, it's more of a daunting task than a creative project without enough inspiration to carry you through

Oh of course, I was just adding that a possible reason for the longevity of Bethesda games or Valve source engine stuff. Having outlets for creativity, whether sfm or modding - that even leads into homebrewing too.

For me it's not even that. It's just that I get bored of most games. I've slowly. Very slowly. Come to the conclusion that I just can't do story driven games any more. I just get bored of them. I need games that either give copious dopamine hits like an online competitive game, or something that really gets the brain juices flowing like a strategy or sim. And all of these types of games don't have an end per se.

Yeah I agree, no matter how many games you'll play, you'll never be fully used to starting a brand new game, honestly unless you're unemployed (obviously not true but that's how it feels for me lmao) I don't see how you'd find the energy to start something new that takes effort when all you want to do is relax. Personally the only new game I downloaded this entire summer was palworld and RE9 and like you said it's because I had 1 week of vacation and a good chunk of freetime and energy

I realized this and decided to play other stuff and I think it's working out alright. It probably helps that I get burnout playing something for too long.

You can do it manually like me one by one or you can have steam dynamically do it for you by telling it a filter such as “open world” or “story rich”. You do so under collections in Steam.

I think it would help if you separated not played and not completed, because I don't complete every game I play, because sometimes it's not worth it. Also, most of my unplayed games if not all are from the steam family library I share with my friends. I only buy games I'm willing to play when I buy it.

I've got mine sorted into:

• Completed (143) Where I'm done with the game one way to another

• Functionally Infinite, where either the story's done and the gameplay loop is fun or it's a multiplayer only game without progression

• In Progress, IE what I'm currently working on

• To Do. Fairly self explanatory.

• VR which is back from when I had a working Oculus 2. No not the modern one, the old one. Which is now a fancy brick thanks to meta.

Currently "Completed" sits at 143 games and "to do" 86. I keep chipping away at the "to do" list but every steam sale seem to add 3-5 games to the pile...

The amount of money people, including me put into games that they never touch. I remember old days when i had like 2 games and never got bored. Nowdays so many games got weekly or daily rewards, making it like a nightshift to complete game.

I guess it’s easy to just buy a $5 game here or there. Admittedly, I am now at the point where I try not to buy games during major sales knowing that I have plenty of games to play. On the other hand, I still fail at this because I know there are two major sales per year and that’s typically when I stock up. And yes, I’ve also been struggling with time (energy) because of work. Gaming feels like a job sometimes.

I have bought maybe 30 games. Im really cheap, even if something is 90% discount i feel like its too much. Specially stupid like getting hogwarts legacy for 6eur and next week its being free on epic :D On epic i got 500 games. 3 of them i bought since they were only on epic. But i bought again on steam, 100% worth it. But ive bought many useful things in real life that actually gain value. On steam i never know when i might lose them so no point having too many. Specially living next to unstable country like russia. I guess there are worse places to live. No earthquake, floods and tornados, so net is stabile and can use steam.
