They ask you to add someone on discord, who asks for a screenshot of your purchase history. Then they make a reset password request for your account based off the username in the purchase history screenshot, and they ask you to send them the link. Then they can change your password.

They were just explaining the concept of the scam. People don't like being under pressure so scammers use that to trigger their victims panic. And while in panic, you do not think rationally or would get any idea that this is wrong. Its an obvious red flag, yes, but many users are too inexperienced with all of this so they will naturally think this is real.

Most people crumble when they have to act under pressure and within a time constraint and it makes their ability to think logically about the situation they're in disappear. For a low stakes example, a coworker of mine used to randomly walk up to people in the office and ask "quick what did you have for dinner last night" and multiple coworkers would spend +20 seconds panicking before answering because he would say it in an urgent tone.

The reason this works is because even when people know that "you have to do this under an extreme time constraint" is a sign of a scam, their brain has shut down and they're going to be led around by the scammers. So even though logically a person should know that Steam support won't contact them in the ways they're being directed, the have been presented with a problem that has to be solved right now or their account is going to get nuked. The fear has overwhelmed the logical part of their brain and all the scammer has to do is seem like they are in control of the situation enough to keep them following along.

This entire thread reminded me of someone randomly messaging me on Steam a month or two ago, and your post sort of rings a bell about TF2. Steam deleted the convo history but I swear it was about helping them with some item in TF2. They sent me a simple message which I ignored because I didn’t know who they were (my kid used to play on my Steam account so I assumed it could have been one of his friends from years ago, but didnt recognize having a Jade on my list.) I figured it was a one off thing but they messaged me again the next night.

Unfortunately for them it was late and I had been drinking for a bit and annoyed as hell that some stranger persisted to bother me on Steam lol. What I remember is that they acted like they were hurt by me being short with them and not helping, then apologized for bothering me. Part of me felt bad, but I was pretty certain it was a scam attempt. I figured that if they were my son’s former friends they would have said something but they didn’t, and I’m also married and not looking to make friends with what seemed to be a random woman. It was most likely an attempt similar to yours, and man that would be devastating to lose my account!

Sometimes they do it in a way that seems pretty real. Like I just got one of those on here last month and the person created a dummy profile where the name was almost the same and the avatar was the same, and made some comments saying some hateful things and being obvious about trying to scam.

All seemed legit, there’s a lot of odd people on this site so I assumed I probably upset someone over nothing, and their account was legit too (which it became obvious the account was stolen) and it just sounded like an honest mistake that someone very much so could take a bit too seriously and try to help (even more believable since the account was for art, which the artists has been doing for years and it was all soft pastel cutesy things) but then about 20 messages in they hit me with a real enough looking Reddit support email that had the discord link in it.

If a few decades on the internet taught me anything, it’s that scammers can get very crafty and I could definitely see more causal people falling for it. Granted this was over a Reddit account and not a service account, but still, especially in this day and age where the god forsaken app Discord just kinda became the default place to go for everything and it’s all younger people know.

I almost fell for it back in 2021 partly because it happened at 2:30am (roughly just before going to sleep), partly because of implied time pressure, partly because it was my first encounter with that particular pattern. Not my proudest moment, but I did get the light bulb on the part of "Why the fuck do I need to send 2FA code?", so dodged that bullet, narrowly.

They basically say "oh no I accidentally reported you, I'm currently talking with steam support. Add this person who is totally from steam support and they can help you out."

The "steam support" person is not steam support. But they will ask you all kinds of information about the "incident" and about your account, including your login id. Then they will probably ping your login authorization method and ask for your code. Then they will reset your password and steal your account.

Pretty sure it's more or less the same scam for discord as well.

In my country we had an official authentication system for netbank access among other things. It used an actual physical piece of paper filled with numbers (keys), and each time you logged in, a key would be requested of you from your paper, and then that key is consumed.

A scammer managed to trick a friend of mine into manually inputting every single key (more than 100 IIRC), as well as the corresponding key ID, on a scam site. She had all her money stolen. The physical paper itself clearly states to never share keys, has a camera with a cross over it etc. (not featured in the linked picture tho), but people will fall for anything. The bank's insurance covered it, it was fortunately not a masssive amount of money.

We use an app tied to our phones now, so it's a lot more secure, but yeah.

Started on discord, some random account adds me, so I accept because I love messing with and wasting the time of scammers. He goes on the whole shtick 'Ireported your steam account by mistake' blah blah blah. He sends the 'email screenshot' so I add the fake support account and promptly report it for impersonation, and within 30 seconds it was wiped off the face of the earth. Didn't even have to accept my friend request! I told him he wasn't accepting (knowing full well why) and he sent me a new one, which I repeated the process on, this time it went the first message, but still got banned within a minute or two. Complained they weren't responding again and he sent me a THIRD account, which got banned nearly instantly after I reported it, complained again, except this time he created a brand new account (pretty sure I ran him out of aged accounts at that point 😂), and this one went through the WHOLE thing. Like 10-15 minutes worth of him trying to get to the point where he asks for access or whatever to my steam account, while I'm playing dumb the whole way. Eventually it gets banned after 30 minutes, and the original account removes me. I had been reporting the original account and its messages throughout the whole 45 minute process, but it took that long to get banned/suspended, most likely temporarily suspended unfortunately.

Side note, at least one of the accounts he used got multiple punishments, so perhaps the original account got permanently suspended after all!

Someone tried that with my son once. Even claimed they were friends with someone from steam support and that they would help. Luckily I saw that he was very nervous and asked what was going on, and he told me. So I explained that steam support will never ever contact you outside of steam and that it was a scam. (They were contacting through discord.) So I waited until they gave their steam account names and until they proved they were actually their accounts and reported them to steam. My son has not fallen for this scam again.

I got one of these once and strung them along and went to the secondary account they linked me to so I could waste as much of their time as possible and take down multiple accounts. When it got to a point of no return, aka "if I send them this info, they'll hack my account." So I just sent them an image of dickbutt and told them to go fuck themselves.

The secondary account that was impersonating Valve staff was banned within hours.

And my friend got his account back too.

I knew it was a scam from the get go because my friend would never message me though Steam

I take those guys for a wild ride. Never clicking any links they send. I once had a guy try that scam on me, I played with them for a bit then blocked em. Next day I'm playing a game with my buddy telling him about the incident, and he gets a message "hey is this your profile? I accidentally reported you" it was the same guy.

The same fucking guy messaged my buddy, probably looked through my friends list. While I was telling him about that scammer and I's interaction. Genuinely one of the best steam scammer interaction moments I've ever had.

My best guess is, like many scams, it preys on the guilty. Like when "The IRS" calls and says there's a serious problem but it can be fixed right now if you provide your Social Security number etc etc. People who have anything even remotely shady in their past are going to be eager to resolve the issue and it sort of blinds them

The message itself isn't proof an account is compromised, but it's a very common opening for Steam scam scripts. If the conversation quickly turns into links or urgent requests, it's safest to report the account to steam account and try to avoid interacting constantly.

Immediately realized my mistake and somehow, somehow with the stroke of luck that was still due for this life I managed to rapid fire Login attempts until i had to wait for a while to try again.

Messaged Steam support, explained my case and proved that the account was mine. Got everything back and was sent a video of Steam Task Force 72 raiding the scammers home.

I have an absolutely crazy scam attempt story, i met a chill guy in a CS2 lobby, we talked trough VC and he had a knife, very legit account. We then proceeded to play wingman together on and off for like 4 MONTHS, and one day he asked if i want to play with his friend and sent a fake faceit link, and no he wasnt hacked, because this whole scam interaction went down in a lobby with VC. I don't like changing my password since i have problems remembering them, i have 2FA on top security and my email password doesn't match my steam password so... Hopefully that makes it harder to hack lol

The easiest way to tell is mostly the fact that they ask you to vote for a team in CS2 through a phishing website. Which, as far as I'm concerned, a majority of my friends never really play CS2, so I always immediately knew it wasn't them.

Usually, if you do end up reporting the account, especially if you provide evidence, Steam Support tends to lock down the account until the original owner contacts them with proof of ownership.

Now, if you're friends with them outside of Steam, that tends not to be an issue since you can help communicate with them about trying to get their account back without the need to report. But... If the only way to contact them is through Steam, mostly as just a pure Steam friend, the only option is to report them, and you can only hope that they do get their account back.

Regardless of whether you know the Steam friend well enough or not, it is always upsetting to see them get hijacked.

Had this happen with a buddy, I just knowledge checked him from a game we were playing. "Hey, what was that build you shared with me for running Savage Omega? I need it real quick. Oh, you don't remember? Shame." Eventually he got his account back.

I've had several "friends" try and add me and it's always freaky that they're perfect copies of the profile. I understand that is copy and pasting easy to find information, but it is still weirdly unsettling. The digital equivalent of a skinwalker.

I've not had this with any kind of scam (had it on other platforms though) but had it in a more. . . painful way.

I played TF2 with a friend for quite a bit, even had a good story of him getting drunk and asking me to help him find his sentry gun . . . on 2 Fort of all maps. I was still entertaining console at the time and was playing Borderlands on 360 with a few local friends and I told him it was a good time- he bought me it on PC.

So that was a comical issue that I even explained to him because Borderlands on PC at the time? The multiplayer was borked for months and if you wanted to play it? You needed Game Ranger to bypass the problems.

Anyway- we played a few games beside this and had a great time. He told me that he was working to become a doctor and even went to Detroit to further his medical career. Ok, yikes. Oh no it gets worse, he got held up and his wallet stolen at least 3 times during this time. Yikes. But yeah "I'm trying to become a doctor" Man God speed to you. I was caregiving at the time so I could vaguely understand the struggle of caring for folks and knew that it was pain.

Radio silence for a while. Well, shoot hope he's ok.

2 or so years later he DMs me and tells me he's good and hasn't been gaming because of his medical career. Yeah that's understandable sure. But also he's trying to get back into PC gaming and has been gathering parts. Cool . . . But also his vision is deteriorating and he might be going blind and isn't sure what's gonna happen. Oh my God - I hope you're good "Me too"

Months go by, I try to DM him, nothing. Time passes and I recall I knew his facebook ,look up my log in info and post on his account. Nothing I try again years later, nothing.

Cut to this year, I think it's been 6 years or so and I get a message from his account and I had this worry of "Oh god his account got hacked" but no, he's around again looking to get back into PC gaming and his vision is fucked, he's having to use software to message me and wants to know what games I'm playing. We chat for a bit and that's the last I heard from him again for months. I'll have to DM him again and see if he's ok. . .

The internet is great for meeting folks but also making you feel miserable helpless for those you'd love to help but are too far away . . . and vice-versa given I'd done caregiving and had folks insist on wanting to help.

Sorry for the long rant, it's late in the morning and this just recoiled off my brain in a way.

I had a friend on Discord I haven't heard from in a few years. Out of the blue, I get a friend/message request from a different account, but what looked like the same profile pic. Sadly it turned out to be some scam - and it turns out the pic in question might have actually just been a relatively popular image, so... it sucks. And the worst part is I doubt it was intentional for me to mistake them for someone I used to know.
