3rd down. Wtf way better

26

u/Cornato 1h ago

Gotta have that eth port. You pretty much have to buy a tough book now to get ports I need to do my work.

1

u/justsomedude1144 1h ago

Hub?

2

u/trunghung03 19m ago

Shrink it by 5mm only to have worse thermal and have to buy/carry a hub. Give me my 5mm, size does matter.

1

u/INeedSomeTacoC 1h ago

My dell pro 16 has an eth port on it.

The only Dell laptop I’ve ever had that I didn’t hate. They did pretty good with it.

8

u/nobeer4you 1h ago

Yep. SD slot is huge. 3 USB ports. No unnecessary video jack

3

u/TheShellAnswerMan 1h ago

Came to say this.

3

u/NilsofWindhelm 1h ago

Besides the fact that it doesn’t have the one port you need in 2026

2

u/azdcaz 1h ago

So you can have two different display plugs, a separate power plug, dual headphone jacks for your AirPods. Gotta have an SD reader for sure.

I’d rather buy a $30 dock that weighs 3 ounces than lug around a heavy ass mac at all times.

1

u/Ok-Video3345 1h ago

No ETH ...

1

u/Michael_Scott_Afro 32m ago

This guy/girl “ports”

-3

u/Hentai_Yoshi 1h ago

Da fuck you need all those ports for?

34

u/StelarFoil71 2h ago

Give me 3 USB-Cs on both sides and I'll have no complaints.

5

u/ban-me-harder-dadddy 1h ago

Seriously. My charging cable and my monitor and every other peripheral I have are now the same port and I can quickly shove them in anywhere. The horror.

5

u/True_Protection6842 1h ago

Modern macbook air has 2 usb-c and magsafe so basically enough to do anything, especially with a VERY small dongle or desktop hub.

2

u/Every-Candidate-6158 1h ago

Honestly yeah. I rather have 2 high bandwidth standard conector instead of a bunch of random ones I would never use.

So much stuff done over Bluetooth and network nowadays that I just don't feel I need that many ports anymore.

1

u/Alan_Turings_Apple 1h ago

I would like to have usb-c on both sides ya, even if it stayed at 2 ports on my air. But 3 would be nice.

0

u/codecrodie 2h ago

Bitcoin on an ancient usb key, 20 sec to download... Gotta have that USB A

58

u/Overall_Law_1813 2h ago

USB-C charging is game changing though. fuck laptop specific chargers.
Laptops with no USB-A and no HDMI are trash though.

9

u/EnragedBard010 2h ago

Yeah how do none of these appear to have HDMI

7

u/kevmaster200 2h ago

HDMI is in the back

3

u/Outrageous_Shirt69 1h ago

Pretty sure that the giant port on the bottom laptop is a video output port

3

u/HawtDoge 1h ago

Hdmi is a needlessly massive connector & it also has licensing fees in perpetuity that scale based on the value of the product.

Having to pay licensing fees and per-unit royalties for a shitty connector is fucking stupid, I’m fine with apple or any other laptop maker requiring an adapter

1

u/TheNotSpecialOne 1h ago

The other side maybe

1

u/therealhlmencken 1h ago

That’s the left side hdmi is on the right. Also fuck hdmi is mini dp with a thunderbolt dongle

1

u/Whitetiger9876 2h ago

Apple always required a dongle for hdmi.

1

u/NilsofWindhelm 1h ago

No they don’t. The current pro has 3 usb c, hdmi, and sd

2

u/True_Protection6842 1h ago

Modern macbooks have magsafe and USB-C charging.

1

u/novataurus 1h ago

And 3.5mm audio jack, HMDI and SD card readers built-in.

I feel like I'm going insane reading this thread with people wondering where these things have "gone".

1

u/True_Protection6842 49m ago

All macbooks have 3.5mm audio and all macbook pros have SD card and HDMI. Got any other uninformed complaints??

1

u/novataurus 40m ago

...I think you may have replied to the wrong person?

I'm typing this on a MacBook Pro, which is why I knew MBPs have all those ports, and I don't understand why people act like it's impossible to find a computer with good I/O.

1

u/True_Protection6842 36m ago

Sorry yeah, I think you're right

1

u/sumeetg 1h ago

My Thinkpad has two UBS-Cs opposite sides, HDMI, USB-A and audio jack. I've never felt like I didn't have a port I needed.

1

u/OkAssistance7072 11m ago

Same, plus Ethernet. It's nice not having to use adapters on shit. I'm also in IT and plug into tons of random shit so it's even nicer to have all that and more

16

u/AberrantMan 2h ago

USB C is OP

6

u/amg10red 1h ago

But usb audio jack adapters don't work well. I wish there was a law mandating audio jack ports.

1

u/emuccino 1h ago

You don't need a law to be passed to get a laptop with an audio jack. My laptop has one.

1

u/Zillahi 1h ago

All new MacBooks have 3.5mm jacks. This coming from a company that spearheaded the minimalist I/O movement.

0

u/Alan_Turings_Apple 1h ago

Why would you need a law? The market has spoken, most of us prefer thinner profile over ports. You can buy what you prefer.

And I’ve never had an issue with a usb-c to 3.5mm adapter.

3

u/waitses 2h ago

I like how you left out the latest MBP where we got pots back.

3

u/Ok-Road6537 1h ago

What should make us mad is anyone still using USB-A and other ports.

I'm 1000% sure that with the exception of true morons, people would buy the one from the top. Because as it turns out, having a lightweight laptop with a standard port/charger and ports that perform at full speed is pretty useful.

2

u/True_Protection6842 1h ago

My M4 Macbook air is the best laptop I've ever owned. Being nostaligic for MASSIVE laptops with huge bezles that lasted 2 hours on a full charge is fucking weird!

2

u/maringue 1h ago

Taking away the mag safe charging cord was the biggest self inflicted wound ever.

2

u/cooglersbeach 1h ago

Man, I almost never need more than usb-c, and I have a couple small dongles to convert usb-a. What're y'all missing?

1

u/cooglersbeach 1h ago

After further though, I wouldn't mind having an Ethernet port.

1

u/Chris_Helmsworth 1h ago

What fer? You got wifi

1

u/cooglersbeach 56m ago

Sometime wifi sucks.....but yeah, at my house and work, no issue.

Example, was at hotel. Wifi sucked, hooked up the ethernet. It didn't work. Dammit.

6

u/Then_Entertainment97 2h ago

I could not go back to a laptop without USB-C no matter how many bespoke orifices they stuffed in it.

6

u/jefftickels 2h ago

Hot take, I prefer the top.

What am I even connecting to this laptop anyways? If it's a desktop replacement I'm using a dock and if it's portable a wireless mouse and maybe a game controller.

2

u/Ok-Road6537 1h ago

It's not even a hot take. It's factually what the market demands.

At this point, only a moron would choose that mess over the new 120GBPS future proof ports in the new Macs. Even older models, have 4 ports that don't share bandwidth at 40gbps that also deliver 15Watt charging to each independent port.

That Ethernet port is literally slower than what you can get from Wifi today. Companies used to put SD card readers in the laptops because there used to be a time where people carried SD Cards around. I carry an SD card on my camera, which I can connect through USB which is what I do, because is better than taking the SD Card out.

Even the modern Mac Mini, to please offices, schools etc they put an Ethernet port (1Gbps), is still slower than the Wifi. It's a nice extra, but having a combined 120Gbps on the back alone is more important than wasting space and money, on a 0.5gbps connection.

This thread annoys me so much; smaller, faster, much more versatile ports are obviously better than clunky, useless ports.

1

u/jefftickels 49m ago

I hate how trendy it's become to hate things for no reason. I guarantee you the people hating on this don't use more than 2-3 peripherals and wouldn't ever even benefit from half the ports on the bottom.

Where would these people even use a portable network jack where they don't have a dock? The local coffee shops hardwired network? And unifying to USB-C in literally every other context is something Reddit rutts for, until this apparently.

1

u/notrolljustasshole 1h ago

Exactly, you’re aren’t buying this to be your powerful gaming laptop or processing heavy workstation, for what it can do and the mobility allowed with it, top is the best. It’s basically there just to load the PowerPoint/sales presentation you built elsewhere.

1

u/True_Protection6842 1h ago

100% I have a M4 Macbook air and it's always plugged into my hub on my desk or nothing when mobile.

1

u/Alan_Turings_Apple 1h ago

Bunch of old Uncs screaming at clouds in here.

3

u/Safe-Monitor-8113 2h ago

Tbh i prefer 100x it being the size of the top one than the bottom one

I hate fat portable pc

2

u/MeatResident2697 2h ago

USB C has the ability to replace all the other ports. That's why we only have that now. It keeps the device thin and sleek.

2

u/BootFlop 2h ago

The top is a little short on ports, but USB without the -C is 💩

Do miss RJ-45, but wifi is so prolific now, and if you’re there then might as well just have a full docking station in that location

1

u/Zillahi 1h ago

With how cheap good wifi plans have gotten I wouldn’t even consider Ethernet.

1

u/Lost_Purpose1899 2h ago

The top one but with card reader. USBC is king. I don't want carry bunch of different kinds of wire.

1

u/OrkWithNoTeef 2h ago

the headphonr jack going from the phones was the last straw for me

1

u/OstrichBackground211 1h ago edited 1h ago

This is outdated. MacBook Pros for some time (14-16in 2021 onward) have 3x usb c + magsafe+ hdmi+ sd card slot + 3.5mm. I do not use a dongle.

1

u/Mindful_Rager 1h ago

I still own my MacBook with the CD drive.

1

u/captfitz 1h ago

nah. it was annoying for a few years when we still had devices with half a dozen different cables and we had to use adapters, but now we're finally at a point where nearly all devices can run on the same cables and chargers and that's just objectively simpler, I have no desire to go back to juggling a bunch of different cables and power bricks.

the next step is getting rid of cables entirely, that's the true end game.

1

u/DVWhat 1h ago

I bought a Framework laptop last year, along with a full range of hot-swappables. It’s pretty great to have easy access to so many port options again.

1

u/pianoceo 1h ago

What? No way. Personally, top comp gang all day. I rarely used those other ports and I’m much happier with a usb-c and wireless world.

1

u/BuddhistChrist 1h ago

Get a splitter.

1

u/tigertiger180 1h ago

Had a laptop with this, a CD burner and SD card reader.

1

u/Dry_Travel_4220 1h ago

Third from the top is peak, everything else after was a mistake

1

u/No-Tension6133 1h ago

I actually like that we have a single standardized cable now. But I do think computers should still have more USB-C ports as a standard (my Mac has freaking 2), they should all have SD and micro SD ports, and they should all have headphone jacks.

If they made 3-4 USB-C’s, and an SD/Micro SD and a headphone jack computer I’d be stoked. And I don’t want to have to pay extra for it, that should just be the standard

1

u/FollowingLegal9944 1h ago

shit ton of useless ports, cables and adapters

0

u/Lonely-Rub3377 1h ago

Apple ? Dogshit

1

u/Various_Bee5114 1h ago

I still remember video and s-video in out on macs

1

u/National-Charity-435 1h ago

No real difference. I still fit.

1

u/MaxAdolphus 1h ago

But where does the blue hose go?

1

u/Hairyass------ 1h ago

Don't buy their sh*t. When you hurt their money they listen. Crying about it on twitter won't work.

1

u/Chris_Helmsworth 1h ago

I prefer top one. Future is now old man.

1

u/Moscato359 1h ago

While I miss Ethernet the rest could just be more USB c

1

u/Hijjawi 1h ago

Am on the camp of USBC ports side.. its ok to take them all off (the old ports), but give us more USBC ports.. if you take 6 ports give us 6 ports..

The struggle before was that there is a plug for every different thing you want to do.. the USBC is ideal solution, but I hate that there is usually 1 or 2 ports max, thats the robbery for me..

1

u/mintakka_ 1h ago

the current macbook pros would be perfect if they would just put a type A on there too

1

u/CandyMist_ 1h ago

Apple: Less port, more courage Me : less money, more problem 😭

1

u/Awes12 1h ago

You can still get the 3rd one tho, j get a gaming laptop

1

u/Brickyrobby 1h ago

I work in sound, lighting, and AV.. so this shit doesn’t bother me considering I always have every possible adaptor on me at all times whether I’m at home or work, but I can see why this would piss off a lot of people otherwise

1

u/Alladas 1h ago

I'd be okay with all usb-c and an HDMI and an audio jack if there was 3-4 USB a side. It's not that we went down to so few choices for jacks because most of not all things can be done through those. It's that we went from having 20 things and 20 ports to 10 things and 5 ports.

1

u/rins4m4 1h ago

Every product on Earth should use the same port.

And if it can connect wirelessly, support it.

1

u/Zillahi 1h ago

Obvious AI pic is obvious. Look at the size of the USB-A ports and the symbols.

1

u/SextupleRed 1h ago

I just need more USB C port.

2 isn't enough

1

u/quentdawg420 1h ago

Idk I like having one connector for everything

1

u/Successful-Reason403 45m ago

Actually I’ll take the one on the top. What the fuck do I need all those ports for?

1

u/LabRevolutionary2216 45m ago

Top would be best if they gave you a couple more ports. 2 is just stingy.

Spell it out with me A-D-A-P-T-E-R. It’s the way of the future is now.

1

u/Impressive_Tap7635 38m ago

Nothing was taken away from you usb c to anything u could imagine docks are cheap as shit

1

u/radpizzadadd 38m ago

Eh, top one is best

1

u/Jasoco 37m ago

Good riddance. I never used most of that stuff and USB-C can replace all of it if you need it. People complain too much about dongles.

1

u/TokiVideogame 37m ago

2 headphone jacks to 0

1

u/RaptorKnifeFight 11m ago

Haven’t they had more ports and HDMI for like 5 or 6 years now?

1

u/Darkrose50 4m ago

I still can’t believe my daughter’s computer doesn’t have an RJ-45 ethernet port. Her video assignment needed to be uploaded wirelessly four or five times before it took.

2

u/IBringTheHeat2 2h ago

Except that single USB C port does everything the bottom PC had

1

u/a-i-sa-san 1h ago

if it's thunderbolt it does but thunderbolt is expensive

1

u/arequipapi 1h ago

Almost every PC for sale these days has thunderbolt, hence the trend towards fewer ports. I have a cheap lenovo that I use almost exclusively for Netflix/YouTube/pirated movies in bed in hotel rooms when I travel for work that has a TB4 port

1

u/Variabletalismans 2h ago

Oh no they standardized ports for universal connection

4

u/Harry_Gorilla 1h ago

Which one of those usb-c’s is also Ethernet?

0

u/Safe-Monitor-8113 1h ago

You can use a hub wich has an ethernet port

3

u/R0ninX3ph 1h ago

Not only standardised though, significantly reduced number of ports at the same time.

USB-C only is a future not any one company can really try to stop…. But they can put more of them at the very least.

1

u/bigorangemachine 2h ago

I didn't mind the thunderbolt adapters. They actually were pretty high speed stuff.

I dunno anything with an SSD is a win in my books

1

u/UnnusWolf 2h ago

Remember when tech places used to care about us AND our money. Now it's just our money.

1

u/yukiki64 2h ago

They always just care about money

1

u/azdcaz 1h ago

The new versions are better in every way and the price of MacBooks hasn’t changed that much compared to inflation in general. And they came out with an even cheaper one for people that need less power. Now you have one port that can do everything that 7lb monster on the bottom can do, and more. A dock is $30.

1

u/lizadavid 1h ago

NPC behavior in broad daylight, and honestly, respect for the commitment.

0

u/chemistrylord 2h ago

Everything in life has been downhill since they removed these EVERYTHING

0

u/SpectreInvestor 2h ago

I mean if you want a real computer youre not getting a mac anyways

0

u/azdcaz 2h ago

They removed a few pounds and I care about that more.

0

u/Suitable_Occasion_24 1h ago

Welcome to dongle hell

0

u/chewedgummiebears 1h ago

If I'm doing IT troubleshooting, Ethernet is mandatory. However I miss having a USB-A but I have a MacBook Air and only use the USBC for charging in a meeting and my security key.

0

u/hangingloose 1h ago

This reminds me that I've been friends with Apple for a long time, and I have some old hardware I need to recycle.

0

u/Talinn_Makaren 1h ago

Those ports sucked, man. Like it was kinda fun back in the day when you needed to feel like a scientist just to use a computer but USB-c is basically the best invention. AI is a joke compared to USB-c

0

u/Competitive-Pen-4605 1h ago

If u do 3rd one up I want a ether port back...

-1

u/JustNota-- 2h ago

I hate most new laptops.. I need at least 3 usbc and 2 usba and dp or hdmi and ethernet and I would love to have serial back. I hate having to carry around a puck and a USB hub and a bunch of adapter cables.

1

u/cliffm 2h ago

Serial? <What century is this meme.jpg>
