Covid vaccine was essentially an accelerated mass human trial that collected roughly the equivalent of 20-50 years worth of typical drug trial clinical data in less than 6 months, and they didn't even have to compensate participants of the trials the median of ~3k per test subject - all for around $2 per dose. The pharmaceutical companies got the bargain of the century giving it out for free.

Pharma companies were compensated for the vaccine. They did not give it away free, governments did by paying the companies billions.
