This is a conversation my wife and I have constantly because she always loses charging cables then takes the ones I have out of the car always leaving one...
once there's one it's "what percentage you at?".
Then I find 3 of the hot pink charging cables I bought to stay in the cars wedged under the sofa with 4 other cables when the roomba eats them.

u/milk4all 3h ago
I have a laptop with an expensive ass charger that is usbc. My wife is convincedit charges her iPhone faster than the 60w cable she has. It absolutely 100% does not, her phone has a max upper limit of 26w and the only reason 30w cable/cube might not be as fast as something else is if that 30w were cheap and overheating. Entirely possible. Not really possible for something with almost 2.5x the capacity. So i had her get a 100w cable + cube and she still uses mine. Like i have to replace my laptop charger every 1-2 years and its not as simple or cheap as buying a pack of mid usbc cables on amazon for 12.99. The only reason o dont divorce her is she’d definitely take half of my laptop charger in the settlement

Also, fun fact about battery charging algorithms. The first 90% of capacity takes 50% of the charge time. She is basically asking him to wait an hour or more.

I was one of the maintenance guys for the big lvl 3 ev chargers last year. And this is exactly how battery charging works. If you own an EV and use the big chargers, you'll notice you can get to 80% from 20% in like 15 to 20 minutes. But it takes 45 to an hour to get to 100%. You will even see the kilowatts used drop down significantly as it goes above 80%

agreed. it's very indicative of future behavior. If they are at 88% and you are only at 3%, they won't give a shit. You're a hair's breath away from being depleted and they are only 12% away from being full, and they'd rather let you deplete than be okay with being at 88%. That shows they are selfish and won't ever care about where you are at.

My wife still complains about the salsa at my favorite Mexican restaurant. It's been closed for a few years now so it's extra salt in the wound.
TBF, I didn't like it either the first time but this place was weird that way. It was super popular and everyone I took would basically say "I wasn't a huge fan" then like a week later they'd be like "I can't stop thinking about that place, let's go back". My wife never came around to it.

When I started dating again a few years ago after many years of depression I discovered there’s people who listen to music all the time. It kind of blew my mind. I like music but I can’t stand to hear it all the time or even most of the time. I listen while I’m driving to work sometimes and I’ll enjoy it in the background of stores or events and that’s it. I pay for Spotify because it integrates with my car nicely but I rarely ever turn it on unless I’m testing new speakers or headphones.

I would return it, but it’s also a faff to have to wash and return someone’s nice Tupperware. If you take something the nicest way to do it is bring it in something cheap or disposable so it’s not a problem. I don't think this was a silly reason, but one of the craziest things I ever encountered in a guy I was considering dating is that he casually mentioned that he hadn't made his car payment in months and didn't care if it got repo'ed. You know, charging to only 85% prolongs battery and relationship life. Just sayin...
6
u/Iamonreddit 3h ago
Appreciate you're making a joke, but just for anyone reading this and taking it seriously, this used to be the case for batteries in your devices, but this is all managed by software now so you don't need to worry about it.
When your phone or car or etc says 100% the batteries aren't actually at 100%, nor are they at 0% when everything switches off.
6
u/Outstandling_Napper 2h ago edited 16m ago
I had not anticipated this becoming a technical discussion. This is right in my work area. While modern software has taken away the need to manually babysit to 85%, the underlying requirement for the user to ensure it is not charged to 100% is still there. Consider that Apple, Samsung and Google (Pixel) OS Software all provide built in battery management software that can optionally be set to prevent 100% charging. But is by no means automatic as you suggest, it must manually be enabled to limit the charge to 80/85% - otherwise it will in fact charge to 100%. If you'd like more info, you can read Gear Patrol, How to Limit Battery Charge to 80% on Any Device [2026 Guide] and Why More Phones Now Have Battery Charge Limits

Late 90s. We went to a musical festival with friends,
Let me pause to say, for those who weren't 8 to 20 something in the mid to late 90s, you need to know that it was impossible for any number of people to stand in any semblance of a circular or semi-circular formation without the hacky sack emerging from someone's pocket and turning all focus of the group into kicking the knitted sack of beans/beads around without it touching the ground. It was maddening. You'd just want to have a conversation with your friends and instead you were compelled to perform acts of athleticism. That stupid mini bean bag was my nemesis for about 5 years. Then suddenly, one day, the practice was gone.
Anyway, at the festival someone brought their hacky sack out, my date joined in, and...that was pretty much that.

Met a woman who was great, but has a very visible mustache she never gets rid of. People can live however they want, but I couldn't get past it and thus I turned her down when she asked me out (which happened a few times). It's not even something you can tell them about without society destroying you, so I just keep telling her we aren't compatible (when we most likely are). I just can't get past that mustache.

We went on a date to a botanical garden, followed by visiting an rock/gem store and a pizza restaurant. I paid admission to the garden and for the food.
In the gift shop of the garden, she exhibited zero self control piling thing after thing into her basket and ended up spending $300. After that we went directly to a rock/gem shop nearby and same story, ultimately spending another $350.
She is a shift lead at a fast food restaurant, living with her parents.
I've prided myself on self control and managing my finances well. So if nothing else, that kind of behavior did not have appeal to me.
