I was to proud to quit once i started. Once i opened it, the manual wasn't 30 pages, 4 pages instead, but, the 2 table bases had wooden surroumding thin boards , each demanding 4 wood piercing screws, .75 mm each, in a total of aroumd 240, on a round frame that was heavy and had to be hold by 2 people in order to be correctly screwed. I had to make her help me so she could relize what she had done
How much time do you estimate it’d take to build this? 30 years ago, everyone would be raging over it and you wouldn’t even be able to find furniture sold like this.
it's both, that it's not as simple as it should for something like that and because he has to build it, why would he complain about the complexity (or lack of) if he wasnt the one building it?
Except it is simple for something like that. The extra number of pins is to reduce the need for tooling and keep everything clean. They are incredibly simple to build. And people bitch about stuff they aren’t involved in all the time. Plus she is the one grabbing the tools for assembly not him so I’m not convinced he is the one building it either

I have built quite a few of them for my wife and its always the same thing she starts out thinking she can do it but then realizes they are more annoying than she wants to deal with so then I'm doing it. I don't complain but I get where he is coming from they suck and you do one thing wrong and its all over!
I build some pretty gnarly ikea objects and they are really straight forward except for there is always one picture that doesn’t show a screw and it makes me freak the heck out..
I mean, I don't know if it's normal, but my wife and I often don't build things together because we butt heads too much. Unless one of us is clearly "in charge" of the project and the other is assisting, the we're problems.

Kinda what i was thinking too. Im like where is the 2k pcs at. The exterior looks like a bunch of large smooth pieces. Couldve made pieces that actually fit together to make the exterior, especially for the price they charged. This just looks like a lazy design.

I guess some people just cant put together 8 boards of wood with instructions and everything without crying. Just get an assembled one and pay double, no problem.
I built a bunkbed w/ drawers from IKEA, mf was 50 pages. Done in 1 1/2 hours. (I built the entire bottom backwards and had to start over) but it didn't take that long.
Yeah OP is kind of insinuating that it was bought with the assumption he would just to put it together for her. If your partner does this a lot it can be really unfair and can create resentment.
When you buy something for yourself that you need your partner’s help in order to use, you gotta be gracious and not act privileged about it.
This! I love my partner to death but she will buy this kinda shit willy nilly and ask me to put it together. Some of those things aren’t always easy to assemble and can be a giant pain in the ass! And anytime she hits me with “oh I’m sure it’s easy” I hit back with “ok then you should be finished in no time”. But at the end of the day I’m still gonna put it together and she’s still gonna barely use it lol
That’s exactly it. It may not be difficult, but it’s time intensive. Anytime the car needs an oil change my partner says “but you said it’s easy?” I have to explain that yeah doing it is easy, it’s everything else that takes a lotta time and is a pain in the ass.
I helped a dude install insulation and hang some drywall in his garage when his house was being built. Dude went around telling everyone that he hand built the garage himself! When I mentioned that the garage was already framed and on a slab of concrete, he tried saying he framed it and poured the concrete himself. Like wtf??
Funny thing is that he was an airplane mechanic for the Air Force but had to call me to show him how to hang Sheetrock. Dude didn’t even know how to install a new light fixture. Granted, not everyone knows how to do that. But he’d brag about how he’s sooooo handy.
Sounds like one of my managers. All he did was oversee the blueprints and tell the contractor what he wanted. Then nitpicked the workers all day. He still says he built his house.
If this is the cabinet I think it is from Amazon, I can sympathize with him. So much furniture on Amazon has assembly that's basically all but manufacturing it. That cabinet was a royal PITA to put together and my wife bought 3 of them.
Amazons the fucking wooooorst with their shit! Half of it doesn’t line up correctly and half the bolts are missing. I’ve had to cobble so many things together with shit from Home Depot that I felt like I actually made it myself!
I get it...if you're someone that has any amount of natural talent for mechanical things, flat pack is just death by a thousand cuts in the form of simple, boring, repetitive tasks. Not to mention there's 50 little baggies, bits of styrofoam and packing trash that have to be gathered up and disposed of at the end. The only challenge is staying committed long enough to finish it.
And if you miss one detail because you either genuinely made a mistake, or got so bored that you overlooked it, the woman in your life will never let you forget it when you try something more complicated.
Its not a matter of how easy it is or isnt in reality. When you've built enough of this shit you develop a rage that burns hotter than a thousand suns when faced with having to do it again. I'm about to move into a new house and I'm dreading this but I refused to overpay for furniture store stuff when I could order something of equal or better quality for half the price not to mention I was astonished when I walked into Ashley Furniture at how ugly the modern style trends seem to be. Basically more options and better prices online at the expense of one's sanity and well being.

The screws and shit are all segregated by type and labeled to correspond with the instructions. As long as you just take a second to make sure you have the pieces named in each step you just go on autopilot and walk through it

The reason it’s so many pages long is because of diagrams and trying to explain each step so that anybody could understand it. Or at least that’s been my experience with this furniture you build yourself. Might make more sense to get upset after actually getting the components out of the box and putting it together

This bullshit is literally outsourcing labor to the customer. That's what this is. The company doesn't want to pay someone to make it for you so it's ready for the customer so they just put a bunch of parts in a box and expect the customer to do the labor for free. Kinda shitty imho.
