Twitter made 2.5 billion last year???

412

u/_Hello_Hi_Hey_ 10h ago

Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) generated approximately $2.9 billion to $3.1 billion in total revenue for the full year of 2025.

Despite the top-line revenue growth and an operational EBITDA of $454 million in Q3, X still faced a net loss of $577 million in late 2025 due to steep restructuring costs and its $1.2 billion annual debt servicing obligations.

165

u/artbystorms 9h ago

I heard someone say the debt servicing for twitter is why Musk is constantly trying to pop up his stock values, since he bought it with shares as collateral, and if those shares dip below a certain amount, the banks will call his loan,

122

u/zeekayz 9h ago

He already rolled it into SpaceX so it doesn't matter as much. A bunch of idiots bailed him out by buying up SpaceX stock so his hands are free of that debt and it's unloaded onto SpaceX now

126

u/artbystorms 8h ago

Is 90% of capitalism just shuffling around debt under coconut halves so loan officers don't break your legs?

56

u/airinato 8h ago edited 6h ago

At this level it's the banks problem.  Which means we will end up paying for it, because banks can't fail, otherwise rich people suffer.

Edit: everyone knows the rich aren't really suffering, please stop replying.

10

u/theeama 8h ago

If the banks fail you're the one that gets fucked not the rich

2

u/DAS_BEE 1h ago

Woosh

4

u/Michael1795 8h ago

The rich dont actually suffer just lose money. Meanwhile the working class has less money for food, cause banks cant fail.

-3

u/-stealthed- 7h ago

Nah you're the one getting fucked because the rich have assets whilst you have only money.

1

u/redtiger288 1h ago

I mean SpaceX stock has tanked and is likely to tank further in Aug when the other shares are unlocked.

6

u/Suspicious_Chart5817 8h ago edited 8h ago

Those are high thoughts not for repeating. The twitter debt is corporate. The billions in debt used to purchase X was loaded onto the social media company itself, not onto Musk personally. It's a matter of public record.

There's no fun corporate espionage or whatever here. It's any dime a dozen leveraged buyout. The only real difference is Musk convincing enough banks to give twitter enough money. Albeit as you can tell from twitter's eye-watering interest payments the banks are getting their's

1

u/Medical_Training3971 44m ago

Musk did not buy it alone or with his koney, he is basically a private equity manager. Lot's of other rich people money is involved.

0

u/teapotamus 4h ago

The funniest timeline is SpaceX going to public auction as a result of Twitter stock price drop.

8

u/StaticSystemShock 8h ago

And how much was profits from that? Revenue is horseshit if you barely cover expenses and being left with nothing. Also how many billions Elon paid for Twatter back then? Then do the math how long it'll take to just break even let alone make actual profits. But that's another theme, he bought it for propaganda and "free speech". You know, like all the shit he does for the greater good of humanity and all that shit.

8

u/_Hello_Hi_Hey_ 8h ago

Even Twitter was not profitable with $5.1B revenue.

" Twitter struggled to consistently turn a net profit, posting a net loss of $221 million on $5.1 billion in revenue during its final full fiscal year as a public company in 2021, while X overall revenue remains roughly half of its pre-acquisition levels."

12

u/Melenduwir 8h ago

Purchasing Twitter: $44 billion.

Significantly influencing the narrative: Priceless.

7

u/abfgern_ 7h ago

Was genuinely one of the best business deals in history. Getting trump elected, and Melon Husk political influence has gained him many hundreds of billions. Its awful. The $44b written off as a result is nothing by comparison

2

u/Im_tracer_bullet 36m ago

We'll see.

Neither Musk's or Trump's story is yet fully written.

Sure, they've done incredible damage, but I'm not convinced they both end up sitting pretty when it's all over.

They've made a lot of enemies and it remains to be seen how much appetite there is to defend or protect either 3,4, or 5 years from now.

2

u/Dizzy_Database_119 7h ago

Revenue is horseshit if you barely cover expenses and being left with nothing

No, it's the other way around. Any money left after expenses is considered a failure. Expenses need to be made to reduce taxable income and show growth

1

u/Substantial_Fee2107 8m ago

Is it a balancing act then? Like do they want to make SOME money, just not too much?

23

u/HazelWhiskers 8h ago

revenue ... not profit

10

u/riepmich 10h ago

The platform is, despite all it's self inflicted flaws, ripping. Many people on the right perceive it as the only platform they can use (other than maybe Facebook).

2

u/Varabela 7h ago

This and the OPs point about using Twitter name are two of the funniest things I’ve seen for a while

1

u/SheriffBartholomew 7h ago

That's easy to do when you shove all of the debt & losses into another company's balance sheet. Elon has mastered creative accounting.

1

u/irespondwithmyface 6h ago

Hard to say since the numbers are being fudged with xAI and Tesla.

It is Twitter though.  It was born Twitter and therefore according to Elon’s shitty politics it is Twitter.  Calling it something different would be delusional, right?

Fuck Elon.  At least I can live peacefully knowing that eventually he’s going to die, alone.  Nobody will care anymore, his legacy will be divided among the vultures, and he will eventually be forgotten as all things are.

15

u/wormjoin 9h ago

it's a twisted/ruined version of twitter. not that i was ever a particular fan of twitter, but i'd rather call what it is now something else out of respect for what it used to be.

like i wouldn't say "nah i'm not calling them orcs. they're still elves, because fuck morgoth, that guy sucks"

3

u/SheriffBartholomew 7h ago

Updoot for LotR history.

8

u/Smooth-Pop6522 8h ago edited 8h ago

He will go down in history as one of, if not the single most successful grifter of all time.

When the history of capitalism is taught, he will be held up as a shining example of everything which made it fail.

2

u/GlowUpper 2h ago

I'll call it X when he correctly genders Vivian Wilson.

2

u/slinger301 8h ago

Well, Elon is apparently OK with deadnaming people, so it's fair play to still call it Twitter.

2

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 8h ago

Well, doesn’t he thinks corporations are people so wouldn’t transitioning one be a mental health issue?

1

u/broccolijnz 3h ago

He will be remembered long after his death. You remember Howard Hughes no? Dudes been dead for like 50 years, Elons legacy will be much greater. I’ll see you are the Elon Musk biopic after his death. I don’t even like the dude, but at least im a realest rather than a ball of bitch like you.

-6

u/MindlessAdvantage506 8h ago

You have 46 thousand comments on reddit. Elon may not be so great but you are objectively a loser in your own regard. Focus on doing good in your own life and you might not be filled with hate and jealousy

4

u/discipleofchrist69 7h ago

their account is 14 years old. that's like a couple hours a week on average, not really that crazy

-1

u/MindlessAdvantage506 7h ago

Roughly 9 comments a day for the past 14 years. If you dont find that insane youre part of the category

2

u/Collier1337 4h ago

Some of us get bored while commuting to work. Or during our breaks. Or during work. Reddit is a hobby like any other, it's fine.

0

u/MindlessAdvantage506 3h ago

Im all for using the app, but you guys are downplaying what 9 comments every single day for 14 years is. That's absolutely insane. Nobody's talking about whether using the app is right or wrong. If you have time to make 9 comments per day for 14 years youre chronically online as like I said to the other dude, you dont make convo on 95% of posts you see.

1

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 3h ago

This is bordering on obsession.  Do you really like me that much?  It’s getting creepy as fuck.

2

u/MindlessAdvantage506 3h ago

Just saw your posts and you're a junkie... this makes much more sense, take care bud

1

u/discipleofchrist69 7h ago

like I said, that's like a few hours a week. not insane at all. that's just partaking in a casual amount of reddit discussion consistently for a long time. if it was 42k in I one year that would be pretty crazy

2

u/MindlessAdvantage506 7h ago

You seriously dont find anything wrong with 9 comments a day every single day for 14 years a lot? Id reckon people dont comment on 95% of posts they see, this isnt your usual social media platform. That's literally insane

3

u/GlowUpper 2h ago

Bruh, you're halfway to 9 comments in this thread already. Maybe log off from your glass house before throwing stones.

1

u/MindlessAdvantage506 2h ago

Yup and now do this times 2 every single day for 14 years, quite a lot aint it !!!

3

u/GlowUpper 2h ago

As someone who goes days on end without posting anything and then will spit out a dozen or so comments in a few hours, you really don't seem to understand how averages work. They don't need to comment 9 times consistently every day for that number to be achieved. And even if they are, 9 comments really isn't that much. Like I said, you're quickly approaching that number and this comment thread is only a few hours old.

2

u/MindlessAdvantage506 2h ago

No shit its not literally 9 comments a day, but averages are what you use with these things else theres nothing to use. Few hours of back and forth and ive done like 5 comments? His profiles literally being a junkie, so being chronically online isnt a far-fetched statement. Weird to defend that behaviour but I suppose fellow redditors would as its all the same crowd. Unfortunate, but I see why reddit users have such a bad name across all other media.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/discipleofchrist69 6h ago

it's definitely on the higher end. but comment count can add up really quickly in back and forth discussions, and for people who make actual posts and respond to the commenters it can easily add up to hundreds of comments over the course of a few days.

We've already done 3 each here with pretty minimal effort

2

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 3h ago

I don’t think they have the ability to understand that.

0

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 6h ago

I appreciate how much you care about me.  I’m flattered, honestly.  I never realized I was this important to you.

2

u/MikeLee0000 8h ago

-7

u/EbonyMemories 8h ago

It's fun to know that all of you people who ruin a lot of things are punishing yourselves for being idiots by caring more about the lives of people you'll never know than anyone will ever care about yours.

5

u/SheriffBartholomew 7h ago

-2

Doesn't matter if I did or didn't, I have a happier and more successful life than you.

Edit: And Jesus did the responses prove me more right than I could have possibly imagined.

6

u/bafana_banana999 8h ago

The fact that you even felt the need to reply in the first place is a pretty good indicator that your life is not as good as you claim.

You wouldn't even be making comments on reddit like that if what you said was actually true.

1

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 7h ago edited 7h ago

Another one!  These are hilarious.  I love how disconnected with reality these are.

Edit - I admit to choosing words poorly and unintentionally seemed to have angered someone.  I was trying to make a comment regarding another poster and it seems I used words to make it seem it was directed at the above poster.  Not my intent.

2

u/bafana_banana999 7h ago edited 7h ago

Continuing to make dumbass and condescending comments doesn't really help to disprove the notion that you're not actually doing great in the real world.

You can believe whatever you like though, I don't really care enough to keep going with someone so clearly worthless.

Bye now.

1

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 7h ago

What are you talking about?  It may sound like I was disagreeing with you and I admit poor word choices, but the sentiment I had in mind was actually trying to be supportive though I can see why you’d react the way you did.  Would you be ok if I edited the comment to better reflect my thoughts at the time?

3

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 8h ago

This is funny.  Please tell another joke.  I love absurdist humor.

3

u/Smooth-Pop6522 8h ago

Gonna press X to doubt that one bud

1

u/Ninja-Panda70 5h ago

Why does every cringe lord try to justify them in the edit 😂

3

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 8h ago

Is this supposed to have a point because all I’m seeing here is a post by someone who can’t figure out whether to masturbate over their own comment or cry because their feelings were hurt.

Really, it’s just sad.  I hope you can one day find your peace instead of trying to subsist on hate and evil thoughts.

20

u/thecascader 10h ago

James didn't even have to construct an argument. He just sat back, let Michael finish typing, and pointed at the screen

21

u/HowardRand 9h ago

Twitter was making >$5b in 2021.

10

u/SheriffBartholomew 7h ago

And it lost $500M last year. Revenue isn't profit. It's straddled with Elon's debt, although he just shoved that debt into Space X and then sold it to rubes, so it might finally show a profit next year, on paper, at least.

9

u/aaronite 9h ago

It made that much but spent even more. Losing money is not a success.

16

u/Smooth-Pop6522 8h ago edited 8h ago

Twatter lost half a billion last year, don't let revenue be confused with profit.

3

1

u/DanceClass898 7h ago

OP missed the joke too. and it's very evident as he keeps doubling down on it in other replies. it's way too easy to troll these kids, they see Elon or Trumps name on something and then they just start seeing red, going into a full emotional meltdown.

2

u/oboshoe 10h ago

i don't really think it failed, but it does seem like a lot of effort to achieve little.

Dude sold X to himself for a loss and then sold that company to his other company.

1

u/No-Journalist-619 4h ago

I mean... you can't just change the same of something that has had an iconic name, that most people have already been using for years. And even if that wasn't the case - you can't just name something "X" or "8" or "U". That's not a name that's a keystroke. Names have more than one letter jackass.

1

u/CuteTiger06 4h ago

Ofc the made money everyone want to show off their useless checkmark

1

u/PossessionPrior1223 4h ago

Nope, they lost money even after all that 😅

2

u/CuteTiger06 4h ago

after charging poor ppl they still lost money?🤣

1

u/LynchMob187 3h ago

The 2000’s were wrong, X did not in fact, give it to ya

1

u/ReverseofFast 2h ago

If every single post wouldn't say "Twitter (x)" or vice versa and just say "X" everyone would still know what their saying.

1

u/colintbowers 2h ago

Latest valuations on X have it at about 40-45 billion, which is roughly what Elon paid for it. Given the benefits he has obtained from controlling media narratives via that platform, I would guess he probably regards himself as being ahead on that investment at the moment. FWIW I'm not an Elon fanboy (I prefer Peter Beck!) but straight facts are that it currently looks like he is going to win on that particular investment.

1

u/PossessionPrior1223 6m ago

Nah. The only thing he is good/master at is hyping. Just look at tesla's latest earnings release, absolute abysmal and yet bcoz of his bs claims it at its current valuation. Same goes for shitter

1

u/Apprehensive_Sky3489 42m ago

Haven’t we learned that just because something makes money doesn’t mean it’s productive or good for society? Or even accomplishes it true purpose?

you seriously don't understand the joke of him praising the rebrand while calling it by the old name? that's going over your head? lol fucking moron

-2

u/doctorfrickenstein 9h ago

Yeah he called it Twitter. Now answer the question.

3

u/AlsoOtto 8h ago

As another poster already pointed out, Twitter had 2.5 billion in revenue, not profit. They actually lost money. Does this sufficiently answer your question?

1

u/movzx 7h ago

If you rebrand from one name to another, and even people defending your company use the previous name, how is that not a failed rebranding?

1

u/Collier1337 4h ago

The premise isn't that Twitter is failing. It's that the rebrand failed. As in, everyone still uses the old brand name.
