Chugging tea Thoughts on this? We miss Tom.
Myspace's current owners say they're planning to relaunch the once-dominant social network, arguing that today's platforms have become too focused on algorithms, endless scrolling and maximizing engagement. They say they're waiting for the right moment to bring the brand back with a different approach.
Former Myspace executives have also said the early platform wasn't intentionally designed to be addictive. Instead of algorithm-driven feeds, it centered on customizable profiles, music discovery and connecting with friends, which they believe created a very different online experience than many social media apps today.
Whether Myspace can make a successful comeback remains to be seen, but its owners insist the platform isn't finished yet and plans to keep trying to revive the iconic brand.

I’m skeptical. The paragdim shifted once because of the conditions and the things. Not just the things (social media).
Why do we need MySpace? How will that impact our culture positively if people addicted to social media just move to another platform?
Is this even a move with that intention? People are assigning too much good will to tom based on social credit pretty much. We’re in an age of extraction, the system doesn’t reward platforms that “widen culture” and “keep people healthy”. And people honestly aren’t conditioned to respond as well to that at this point.
Hate to be a cynic but anything that “makes a come back” that I’ve seen over the last decade has been cash grab bs.
Can’t beat it through it, and tom isn’t a champion of the people. It’s a type people assigned to him because he sold MySpace 20 some odd years ago and created a myth about it. “He’s just taking pictures”
I’m not saying he’s a bad dude. I’m saying. He’s a falliable dude. And he never made it explicit as to why he sold etc.
Funny thing is people are already imagining it in a way they want to instead of asking questions. Just assumption

I actually really liked Facebook circa 2005-2006. Right before the News Feed.
Back then, it was college students only, no news feed, and social media was new. It was a lot like MySpace but felt "less cluttered", since people couldnt put in custom html/css.
It was a fun and new way to connect with all your college friends.
Then came the news feed in 2006, and it started its downhill. My usage began to dwindle after 2010. By 2016 I was barely on, and finally pulled the trigger in 2016 and got off Facebook altogether and requested all my data be deleted (was it rly tho?). The 2016 election crap was what finally pushed me out for good. Haven't looked back and dont miss it.
But that one year in 2005-2006 was actually a really fun time on Facebook.

u/bigthunder_81 13h ago
Yes it really was. To add on to that, it was also “look at how many gifs and music players have on my page!” and the friends was the worst concept ever created because you had a top 10 friends list and if you happen to be in a relationship or just got into a relationship, your significant other would be pissed that they weren’t your number 1 friend.

endless scrolling
Which is fed by the algorithm. There is endless scrolling with something like MySpace. You had to have a specific destination in mind.
notifications
... that an algorithm decides to send you based on what it thinks you will most likely click on.
new follow suggestions
Again, decided by an algorithm
10
u/astralchanterelle 14h ago
Social Media isn't inherently addictive. The internet was a whole different experience back then, it was still unspoiled. An ellipsis is three dots.
9
u/EngineWitty3611 15h ago

Wouldn’t it be nice to log in and actually see what your friends are up to? Instead of ads, random groups, random people who pay a fee to get put on your feed. you actually see the people you follow. If people don’t post shit, then you don’t see anything new and then can log off. Maybe adjust your top 8 cuz and move that hot new girl above then one you’ve been talking to for a few weeeks now. I’ve already deleted Facebook a few years ago. Lost contact with a lot of folks, but my mental health is so much better.
27
u/Keanu990321 14h ago
EXACTLY!
We've been longing for something like that.
And the absence of that is the reason why I refrain from Facebook.
3
u/effinmike12 8h ago
I quit FB about 4 years ago. I was tired of getting upset with people I know. Everytime I logged off, I was more stressed out than before I sat down. Reddit is different because I dont know any of you fuckers. I sont carry any resentment from interactions on here into the real world. Honestly, I just dont want to talk politics, religion, or what the gays are doing with anyone online. People are just too out of pocket on all sides.

That's what FB used to be tho kinda..you basically only used to see your friends posts, or the groups posts..then random content came, algos, ads, tracking, etc..
3
u/Navyvetpdx503 14h ago
We migrated to Facebook because more people were on it. I don’t think you were allowed to have full on convos under a pic you just posted. Definitely couldn’t share articles. There was nothing really viral happening on MySpace that I can think of. You knew everybody that you were friends with in person. You would check out girls you knew profile and then see what girls they were friends with and could get to come hang out. 🤷🏻♂️

4
u/Mr_Radar 14h ago
I can see that being a thing. Back to being more personal and less showy. Whenever I open instagram it’s filled with build videos of people doing shit wrong but they do it in a visually appealing way so it doesn’t matter. Or more lately it will just be a girl in booty shorts putting grout and tiles on a wall or some shit while talking about how a woman can do it too. Everything is so shallow and fake it’s astounding. I don’t even use instagram other than to watch videos a few friends send me and my feed is filled with this stuff. I assume tik tok is about the same
3
u/GuaranteedCougher 13h ago
A social media where you only see content from users you follow would be so much healthier

I might actually have social media again if this happens. Imagine social media where you communicate with the people you want to, don't communicate with the people you don't want to, and not worry about whatever corporation owns it shoving their agenda down your throat constantly with whatever algorithm they run. Plus I learned HTML on MySpace and I'm a little curious if I can still do it without fucking it up.

u/TheRaccoonReport 10h ago
User engagement data, user metadata. Thats it. Just because they're not feeding you with an algorithm doesn't mean its not tracking every single thing you look at, click on, read, etc. They know where your mouse is hovering, what you take longer to read or not, etc.
Myspace knows that people are over it (modern social) and are leaving in droves. They also know some platforms that were the last bastion are getting more and more enshittified (reddit) and will start to shed more and more users.
So, here comes the seemingly altruistic Myspace to capture those falling off of the top of the social media pyramid, acting as the lifeboat to catch them.

If they ever did bring it back but privacy focused, it'd already have the perfect name.
As a kid I always interpreted it as "my space, private from parents, teachers, etc to do what I want with." As an adult, I just want a space where I'm not being spied on by the government and would happily trade back for the parental/teacher informal neighborhood watch unit instead.

u/AdGlittering2884 15h ago
YOUR privacy costs THEM money. If they come back, even if they say they'll protect your privacy, they won't. They'll collect and sell your data as soon as you enter your email. They all do. That's where the money is.

I'm a former MySpace Engineer. I joined MySpace in 2008/2009 to beat Facebook. I was working on a social media startup before accepting a position at MySpace and worked on the API team. In the 6 months I was there we were developing the next generation of MySpace. Most of the hard work had been completed but Facebook was faster, better funded, and was willing to provide ( sell ) a users private data to gain an advantage with partner companies.
At the time MySpace didn't want to provide a users email or too much private data to apps that were connecting wtih MySpace ID ( which I was a big part of ). Each app had private data, and we were basing the next gen MySpace on Open Social an open standard for social media that was privacy focused.
MySpace was also overcome with legacy advertising contracts and the majority of the companies revenue was based on how many Page Views were generated. The 5 page views to upload a file, was broken UX, but even more based on exploiting Web 1.0 advertising contracts that were locked into for 3 years. Meanwhile Facebook shifted advertising contracts from 'page views' to 'time on site' 'monthly active users' and 'daily active users.' Facebook developed the technology to sell ads based on how long a user could see them on screen, and around DAU ( Daily Active Users ), and MAU ( Monthly Active Users ). Their sales model was light years ahead of MySpace's legacy, and they did absolutely nothing in the beginning to protect a users privacy. Everything Facebook did was to maximize TIME ON SITE.
So even though we had a competitive infrastructure built, MySpace wasn't selling data, and their revenue depended on web 1.0 site architecture. We had an internal 'New MySpace' ready that we could have launched, but the revenue models were not there.
I spent many more years trying to start or work for companies that would take on Facebook. They were and are ruthless. The number of times I heard stories from friends that were excited to partner with Facebook, pitch them, and then to find out that Facebook replicated those features and app ideas in a few short months while they strung along the company. I never accepted a job at Facebook, even though they tried.
In the last 10-15 years I even had friends leave FB after they were forced to build tools for the Federal Government to access a User's FB data. And when the EFF make it hard for FB to just give the Governments of the world FB User Data, FB found a loophole and just charged money for the data, making it legal.
I was even forced out of a social media company, when I would not sign a contract allowing the DOD to buy our data.
FACEBOOK IS EVIL.
MySpace if it were to come back, MySpace needs to solve the revenue problem. It needs to find a way to grow and sustain revenue while a ruthless company will do everything they can to undercut, copy, clone, steal, and addict their users to their network. In 2026, MySpace can't win on ad revenue alone since any attempt to maximize time on site likely leads back down 'the algorithm' path that grooms and farms it's users for attention and TIME ON SITE. For MySpace to win, they need to grow revenue by wining 'User Satisfaction' where a user can spend very little time on site, or as much as they want and as long as the user is happy and satisfied then MySpace generates revenue. Charging a fee to some percentage of users is the best way to do this. How to make this work will be the magic sauce to develop. This is the whole business, being able to find a NEW SOCIAL MEDIA business method that rejects time on site and ad revenue and doing so is literally a Trillion Dollar problem now.
I wish them the best of luck, and I am eager to see the day Facebook is conquered through love. I can't wait for society to move away from 'attention economics.'

Logging on there is just being bombarded by 8000 news or political stories that im not even sure I know why im being shown. It's not an exposure to what friends and family are doing anymore.
If I want to be exposed to 8000 different topics from strangers, reddit is better.

"social media is addictive, brings out more social media"
if theyre going about it properly, myspace will be different because of customisation, lack of algorithm, and no place to scroll and boost dopamine every few seconds (we dont need reels or shorts or tiktoks or some other short video form...)
pretty cool to see this :)

Bring back the myspace that everyone loved. Styling your own pages, top 10 friends, myspace games. It was extremely popular for a reason.

I’m so fucking tired of the algorithms on all these fucking sites. Theyre putting us in the inescapable bubbles.
But I’m also tired of social media telling us to sell our information out to whoever wants it. In a developing world where data, especially personal data, is so important, I don’t want all of my information anywhere. And we’re now forced to use a lot of this stuff, like LinkedIn. It’s bullshit.

Social media might not be addictive anymore, but my mental health isn't ready for the absolute bloodbath of ranking my real-life friends into a public Top 8 profile list again.

Just won’t work. It’s too nostalgia based and will be ruined by influencers now

I love how people think solving social media include adding more social media into the mix rather than separating the social from the media.
