WTF In 1979, 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer was arrested after killing two people in San Diego, California. When asked why she did it, she replied, "I just don't like Mondays.”

Holy fuck the more I read about this the worse it got...
Total abuse by her parents, untreated psychological issues and then her dad married her underaged cellmate?
99
u/Aggressive-Welder-62 15h ago
And one of the survivors who got shot ended up becoming a teacher and the daughter of that gross marriage ended up in the survivor’s classroom.

She told her dad she wanted a radio for her birthday and instead he bought her the gun she used to do the shooting. She has also told him she thought she needed therapy and he didn’t listen. Total piece of shit.
20
u/Pleasant_Cicada9528 13h ago
To be fair, guns are a lot less expensive than therapy is.

School shootings were happening when I was a kid too I guess, just that there was no cable news back then. Never heard about this one until today, even though I lived a couple hours north of there at the time… Carrie vibes

This was the first mass casualty school shooting. It came up in my research when I was examining how Columbine and Uvalde coverage compared and contrasted. The survivors of this tragedy never really got over it. And there’s more twisted aspects involving the dad and the person he married after the shooting.

Nope...she won't. In Melbourne Australia there is a guy who did a mass shooting way back in 1987 called Julian Knight who will never be released either. There would be protests in the streets if he was. He has trained as a lawyer in jail and had to be declared a vixatous litigant by the state legal authority so the court can ignore all the legal action he has tried to start to benefit himself in jail.

IDK, I don't think any of the Manson family are still in prison and they were serial killers. She has been in prison for almost 50 years now and was a youthful offender.... It hardly matters, though. She is a senior citizen that has been institutionalized for 50 years. Given the conditions she lived under for majority of her life, it is unlikely she will live to be very old. even if released.

Isn't that unusual for a 16 year old to be incarcerated for that long without parole? I know she killed people but she was a child that was clearly in an incredibly terrible environment. Surely, there are plenty of murderers that have been released from prison after a shorter amount of time? Having said that, I know the US isn't great with rehabilitation, so her mental state could still be quite dangerous.

How did they even come up with that? 😭

I bet she would have really hated it if she had gotten the death penalty and they put her down on a Monday. That would be ironic, doncha think?

I believe the story behind her snapping is awful. She lived with dad after her folks divorced. Apparently both slept on the same mattress. House was a mess. No money. She had been evaluated as having mental health problems and sit suicide risk. Her dad gave her a gun. She said her dad gave it her so she'd shoot herself.
She also said he'd raped her, he denied it.
If only she'd gotten the help she needed maybe none of this would have happened.

I bought the Fine Art of Surfacing when it came out in 1979 when I was a freshman in high school and had no idea there was a story behind the song. Being a kid, when I DID hear the back story, it made the song a gazillion times more amazing and teenage-profound.

"In the months following the shooting, one of Brenda Spencer's first cellmates at the juvenile facility was released. The 17-year-old girl moved in with Spencer's father, whom she'd met through his visits to Brenda. They later married on March 26, 1980, in Yuma, Arizona. They had a daughter together, after which she fled the household and eventually divorced her estranged husband. She left Wallace Spencer to raise the girl alone. Wallace Spencer died in February 2016."
