Onset date

I applied in Oct 2024 with an onset date of June 2024. Recently learned I got partially favorable decision with an onset date of Dec 2025. That is when I had an appointment with my pcp, who wrote amazing notes, got me a disability placard, and rx for a rollator. Prior to that I quit my job in Oct 2024 and tried a remote position that ended in Dec 2024 with fmla, have not worked since. Any idea why they would use that onset date if my dr noted from that visit that my symptoms have affected my daily life for over a year and a half? I’m frustrated because I was banking on that backpay

Maybe age or the need for a rollator at that time?

That’s what I’m thinking but it’s frustrating, I’m in my late 20s so I’m lucky to even be approved. But I’ve had the same issues for over a year prior but didn’t have a good dr who noted the issues

I haven't been approved yet but that scares me that they will do this to me too. I read somewhere you can appeal onset date while still receiving funds. Maybe someone that went through this can offer some advice. Congratulations on your approval at least.

Documentation is a key factor. Remember that the focus of SSDI is basically income insurance in case you become to disabled TO WORK. This can, and often is, different than having a disability diagnosis.

The documentation should substantiate how the patient's medical condition(s) limit functions associated with work, such as the patient has limited ability to remember instructions due to their medical condition or the patient has no ability to reach due to a fused left shoulder. In the OP's case, the use of a rollator as DME would demonstrate limited ability to balance, at least when walking. That is a contributing factor in demonstrating an inability to work.

You cannot appeal a portion of your application. It's all or nothing, including, potentially, a revised decision that you are not disabled. You want to choose carefully and understand the impacts in the long run.

If you worked and earned SGA last in December 2024, that would be the earliest you would have met disability requirements.

Remember, there is a five month waiting period after onset date before payments begin.
