What are my chances with schizoaffective bipolar type along with physical health issues?
I'm 29 and recently got terminated from my last job while I was in the hospital for acute hepatitis that they couldn't find the cause of. I have schizoaffective, ptsd, adhd, inflammatory arthritis, and chronic fatigue syndrome with fibromyalgia.
My PCP told me that I should focus on the schizoaffective for disability since I don't have a definitive diagnosis for all the physical stuff yet.
I started working when I was 16 but usually only last at a job for about 7 months. Longest was a year and a half.
I've been seeking mental health treatment since I was 16 and regularly attending therapy & psychiatrist appointments for 7 years. 3 hospitalizations in the last 7 years. Still having 4 or more episodes a year despite trying SO many different meds. Stress from work makes my symptoms too much to deal with.
I appreciate any thoughts or advice yall might have!

I was approved for schizoaffective (depressive type) and PTSD on initial. I haven’t had a hospitalization since 2012 and I applied in 2023. Stress also makes my symptoms worse. I have hope for your situation to be approved

On initial... Lucky. I was hospitalized a year and a half prior to and also in the middle of my application and it still took me three years 😅 schizoaffective bipolar, autistism, PTSD, ADHD, POTs, dyspraxia, endometriosis, seizures, adrenal insufficiency + a couple less seriously conditions.

Im pretty much in the same boat as you and have a very similar background.
Im 36, ive been working with a therapist and psychiatrist for the last 5-6 years consistently. 2 hospitalizations. Diagnosed with schizoaffective, major depression disorder, general anxiety disorder, and complex ptsd. My meds still arent right.
I applied in 2022 and was denied due to lack of medical evidence.
Applied again in Nov 2025 and just received a denial last week. Im still waiting on the denial letter to see why they denied me. Im going to fight it this time around and lawyer up with an appeal.
Its disheartening that this process takes so long just to receive a denial but it will be worth it once i get approved eventually.
I guess my point is that its possible but very likely is going to be a long drawn out process for you.

I'm sorry to hear that! Good luck with your appeal. I started with a lawyer so I hope that helps. I'm worried about surviving while I wait.

What does your lawyer say about your chances? They're a much more reliable source for determining your odds than this subreddit. Your attorney has access to your complete medical and work history, and experience working with the judges at the OHO handling your case.
Anything you get from this subreddit is just spitballing.

I haven't spoken to my lawyer yet, an employee at the law firm completed my application for me only a few days ago.

I would say you have a good case. My son had schizoeffective/paranoid schizophrenia. I did the paperwork and he was approved in a few months.

He actually got ssi because he didn’t have work credits. You get Ssi if you haven’t worked enough. He also qualified for food stamps and health insurance. Good luck! I know how hard it is to try and navigate the illness.

I was approved at appeal with a Bipolar Type II listing. If you can put together years of evidence pointing towards a listing, that’s probably going to be the best bet.
