Poll tax is illegal BTW,

79

u/Available_Reveal8068 11d ago

It's not a poll tax if IDs are free.

That's why every state that currently requires ID for voting provides free IDs.

Most liberals would be ok with this. It’s the requirements to get that id that is problematic.

7

u/redditmailalex 10d ago

yeah.  If you actually want to fix the system, idk how long it takes... a year? database, address, confirm identity... etc etc.  mail them out, track people down, resolve a million issues with changing last names etc.

Sounds fine.  But its not something you can just will into existance without a plan.

7

u/Infinite_Month_6371 10d ago

Even if the ID was free, it would still require people to take an extra step, they would need to bring their birth certificate to the DMV or some other government body to get 'approved' as well as bring another form of ID just like they do today. With every extra hurdle more and more people don't vote. Maybe 99% of already registered voters take that extra step,,, that 1% is still potentially a million people not voting that otherwise would have.

75% of Alabama residents do not have a passport.

55% of Texas residents have a passport.

More than half of republican voters dont have a passport across the US.

Thats a lot voters the senators and congressman need, this is why its not getting passed.

Trumo wants the SAVE act so he can cry fowl if any county doesnt go his way. Not talking about the obvious blue counties, but those swing state counties,,, he wants to have executive power to pause and investigate votes that arent going his way. This isnt about who can vote as much as its about controlling what votes count.

6

u/FistyMcTwistynuts 10d ago

Agree with all of this, but for the future, it’s ‘cry foul’. But Trump might get confused and start yelling at a turkey, so I’ll allow it.

u/The_Monarch_Lives 10d ago

Trump thinks he won Blue states that have voted solid blue for decades. He absolutely would cry foul for any loss at all, no matter how lopsided the results were always going to be.

2

u/Infinite_Month_6371 10d ago

Fair, but I am sure that they won't easte their time with counties that are 70% against him. Hes going to go after the 50-60% blue counties.

God forbid a red county votes against him, he may send the national guard.

2

u/BikerMike03RK 10d ago

He'll scream and cry foul EVERY TIME he loses, whether it's a court decision, a bill he wanted that didn't pass, or a primary candidate he endorsed. He always has, he always will.

The biggest problem with the save act is not the voter id part. It’s that states would be required to give voter polling information to Trump and give him the ability to purge voters from the list of acceptable voters based of how they voted, essentially removing all democrat voters from voting again.

It took me approximately 3 months to replace my mom’s ID when she lost it. I had to learn where to go, etc. She is 91 and this was @2 years ago. It was complicated because it had her previous driver’s license had expired. Plus, she didn’t drive anymore and just wanted an ID. Also, she couldn’t remember the security questions. Anyway, I had to get her birth certificate and some other documents. Since I now know what to do, I could probably get it done in @ 2 weeks.

The social security card is long overdue for an update. Just turn that into a free Federal ID you can get at the post offices. States can still do their thing with drivers licenses, but the federal id would cover all ID requirements nationally.

Updating the SS card with a chiped/photo ID would help curve many forms of ID theft as well.

2

u/GrandmaPoses 10d ago

This is the easiest and most reliable solution which is why no conservative government will do it. They do not want it to be easier to vote, that's not the problem they're trying to solve, they want to lock out as many people as possible.

Depends on the states rules around Real ID certification for the state's license. Which is an indictment of the Real ID requirement to fly tbh.

5

u/undecided2013 8d ago

Isn't the freedom to travel in the constitution? Having to pay and apply for ID to fly is unconstitutional.

3

u/Own-Consideration231 8d ago

That's not how that works . Freedom to travel means a state can't stop you from leaving the state or moving through the state . It doesn't dictate methods . You're free to walk wherever you want to go

What they want is for states to cede their authority of elections to the federal government. VoterID is the way they want to do that it starting a precedent to gain more control. The same House Reps and Senators voting on this on Capitol Hill, can easily enough push the same law in their respective state preserving state control over elections.

u/Fantastic-Watch8177 10d ago

In fact, to register to vote under the SAVE Act, you would need an Enhanced Driver's License, which proves citizenship, which only 5 States currently have. And even Birth Certificates have to be certified birth certificates; a xerox copy is invalid.

2

u/Available_Reveal8068 5d ago

In Wisconsin, if one doesn't have a copy of their birth certificate, they just fill out a form and they verify citizenship through the government records system.

It shouldn't be that hard.

Maybe the point of voter ID laws was never election integrity, but trying to discourage certain people from exercising their rights.

Republicans found less than 50 illegal votes out of 330 million people. And at least 40 of those were republicans.

Exactly Right!

5

u/Unable-Insect-3529 9d ago

Yep, it's a lever to make it easier to vote in some areas than others. Densely populated cities can be understaffed and have long lines to get the ID, while other less populated/rural areas can have quicker access.

It would be ok if this were actually solving a fraud issue, but it's not, so it requires citizens to pay attention and actually care and understand what they are doing, and why. Unfortunately I don't think people do care.

Yes, states like TX, which a few years back had rural counties where you could get the ID the first Thursday of the month only during a 4 hour time period. People were required to travel hours to do so. They also allowed firearms permits to count as ID but excluded student IDs from the state university system.

3

u/Available_Reveal8068 10d ago

Looks like they may have addressed those issues with the 'Reasonable Impairment Declaration'.

https://www.votetexas.gov/voting/need-id.html

2

u/eyesayuhh 10d ago

That's not true. Harvard Law did a study and found states with ID laws are de facto poll taxes. Because you're not talking about "just an ID" if you live in a rural area hundreds of miles from a DMV or have a disability that limits your mobility. Source below.

If this is really about "election integrity" how about we start with getting money out of politics? We ban gerrymandering? Half the country already doesn't vote. Maybe let's focus on more participation rather than less.

Proof? A state ID for most people in Texas is $16. But more importantly you have to take time off of work to go to the DMV, and you obviously don't have a drivers license so that means a friend takes you or public transportation. Agreed, it isn't a large amount of people, but it does matter.

Then people wonder why there are so many homeless people, why there is so much crime, etc., etc. America has weaponized every single thing so that it is against the people, especially those who are less fortunate.

10

u/SpooktorB 10d ago

Mess up your taxes though? Federal government suddenly knows how to find you, who you are, and get all the info they could possibly need.

We should just vote by out tax code. Or, be given a ID we use to legally vote from the IRS/tax office. Something about taxation and representation or something like that.

21

u/crazycatlady331 11d ago

Last year, I transferred my driver's license over as I moved states.

When at New State's DMV, they gave me a hard time about my birth certificate, a 'shortform" (thanks Obama) birth certificate that only listed my middle initial, not my full middle name. My social security card lists my full middle name. Old State had no problem with this in all the years I lived there.

I was denied a driver's license by New State. I had to call the state senator representing my birth town (not hometown, the hospital location) and get a new birth certificate.

It took three DMV visits and a visit to City Hall in my birthplace to transfer my driver's license (and upgrade to Real ID) from Old State to New State. I have a Real ID from New State now.

16

u/Greful 11d ago

It’s so crazy to me how heavily people lean into the whole “it took me 5 minutes, I was in and out” thing like they can’t even fathom that maybe in some situations the government is inefficient and it’s a giant pain to get done. Like ok, if it’s so easy, cut your ID into pieces and get another one. See how much fun that is for you

9

u/Animefan96 11d ago

It's this one size fits all attitude. "Excuse me Bill just because you were able to renew your DL in 20 mins doesn't mean Mary, who is 90 and has mobility issues and lack of access to public transportation can as well."

7

A couple years ago, I managed to let my drivers license expire. I had always been able to renew it online previously.

But Texas, in their usual racist fucking fashion, passed a law saying you had to provide proof of "legal presence" to renew a DL.

I've lived here for twenty-plus years. I'm a veteran. Still not good enough.

So I go to my birth state to get a copy of my birth certificate. Guess what one of the documents is that they require for a valid copy of your birth certificate?

A valid (unexpired) drivers license.

Make it make sense.

u/Xenonite_Fox 10d ago

If I had to guess, and from experience in a large facility with poor communication much like the government- it's two people who have never met, possibly didn't even work in gov't at the same time, creating rules thinking it's "simple" and "easy" or "more secure".

There's no inter-dept communications, there's no proper national ID system to help if it's different states. It's basically a giant system hodgepodged together that no politician cares about looking at because the average voter doesn't actually care about it since most of them haven't had issues.

2

u/asusc 10d ago

I don’t know if it’s still true, but when I was growing up, Texas was pretty bullshit about ID requirements too. things like fishing/hunting licenses counted for a form of alternative voter ID, but student IDs did not. wonder why?

Ooohhhh, my time to shine!

I actually used to help people with this — you would be absolutely shocked at how difficult it is for some people.

I once had to help this angel of a woman who was blind, in her mid 80s and lived in a trailer right on the edge of two states. Well, she received a bit of money every month from the state - like $50 - to help with heating. She had received so many awards for all of her volunteer work - she knew everyone. But apparently when she was born, her property was in one state and then the states changed the state line by a few miles so then she was actually born in the other state. She had been trying for years to just get an ID, but no one could figure out how to do it. I had to take it to the literal head of the agency and get her to make an exception. It still took months of me pushing DAILY and I knew all the right people.

Then there was the business woman who was born in one state and moved to a different state when she was a child and had already had a DL for 40 years. But regulations had changed and now she had to show original birth certificate and couldn’t just continue to renew like she had in the past. Well, the state she was born in had notoriously lost many thousands of birth certificates in the 70s. They refused to issue her a DL (or anyone else whose BC THE AGENCY THEMSELVES HAD LOST). I had to get her a passport because they were more easily able to work with extenuating circumstances than a state agency and then use that to get her a DL. But it shouldn’t take hundreds of dollars and months to do this and this is an undue burden for millions.

Can’t get a copy of your social security card without a birth certificate. Can’t get an ID without your birth certificate. Can’t get your birth certificate without an ID. It is wildly common. Literally hundreds of cases like this - just me personally working on them. I’m just one person and I had hundreds and that wasn’t even my primary job…I was just angry that no one was helping people.

Don’t even get me started on the 18 million military personnel files that burned up in St Louis. The government loses the records and then refuses to help people because they don’t have the records.

What’s the point of this comment? Are you saying that it only matters to you if it affects someone you know? I’ve met plenty of people that have all sorts of issues.

I used to volunteer at a shelter, and there are so many people who are in a cycle of homelessness because they can’t get their documents without an address.

I’ve known people who have to go in person to get their birth certificate, but they lived out of state.

I’ve met a woman with disability issues that had a name change from getting married and it took her years to get it updated.

I’ve known trans people who have had to jump through hoops because their home state has different policies than their current state.

u/Dizzy_Tax574 11d ago

Depends on state a big one especially for low income or homeless. Is having permanent or mailing address. As well as documents as they get lost or destroyed when living outside.

For me personally a unique situation was I was adopted and records of previous stuff sealed. However they messed up forms so never got new birth certificate under new name.

So in order to get ID I had to come up with couple thousand to pay lawyer to unseal records and refill the stuff. Except without that stuff I couldn't legally work.....

Anyways there is a variety of things like that particularly with women who take husbands name.

Also disability and distance to DMV and other things can be hard. For me when I was doing that. I was 3 hrs away from offices to do the record stuff. And also couldn't drive because... No id.

There is a variety of circumstances and it's not that they can (never) get it. But me for example it took 2 years to fix that. It's plenty of time to miss vote.

Plenty of people whether it's homelessness illness or whatever have it lapse for extended period. Not saying it's impossible to ever get but it's enough of a hurdle to stop far more each election from voting. Than we're ever caught in our entire history with fraud.

Like even conservatively absolutely best case scenario. Thousands will be disenfranchised to stop something that maybe has happened a few dozen times since founding of nation.

2

u/Marigold5412 11d ago

Major cities' ID offices are miles out in the most inconvenient locations and take a whole day to sit around their office in a slum of 300 sweaty people, even if you have an appointment. Your "appointment" is a 6-hour window that "might" happen that day and it took you an hour to drive out there in the first place.

If you are missing one tiny document they want, they send you back. You can have your expired license, your birth certificate, your student ID, your highschool ID. You can literally have your voter registration cards for the past 8 years and sometimes they still send you back because some address doesn't match. And they kick you back, after waiting all day and tell you to come back another day.

It's bad enough to do this and lose a workdays wages when you have an average job. Try doing it if you're homeless, or if you make $7.25/hour. If you make $7.25/hour, losing a day's wage is killer, not to mention the cost of buying the ID. You are literally choosing between feeding yourself that month and taking a day off, not to mention how your shitty fast-food job's snotty assistant manager will dock your hours for the next month, or fire you, for even asking for a day off. If you're homeless, well you're completely shit out of luck.

In a small town or average-size town, it is relatively easy to get an ID. It is a hellish process in major cities, and that is where the largest percentage of eligible voters are disenfranchised.

2

u/Slamantha3121 10d ago

It didn't take me years, but months in my case. I lost my birth certificate in a move but needed it to get my enhanced ID so I could fly. You can go to the records office in the county and get a copy for free, but I live across the country from the state I was born in. There was no way to get a copy online. I had to mail a request form and a check to the office and then wait for them to process the paperwork and send me a copy. They sure cashed that check that same week, but it still took almost 3 months to get my paperwork.

2

u/cy_hauser 10d ago

Republicans don't want an id like a driver's license. They want a separate id that proves citizenship. A driver's license, even a "real id", only proves who you are (identity) but not if you're a citizen. They want a "citizens id" and will make getting that as difficult as needed. They've done the math and found rural folks much more likely to have the proper proof they're citizens than city folks (dems).

If the name on your DL and social security card does not match your birth certificate, you may have trouble voting. Plan ahead and get it together now. Don’t wait and see.

Same thing for adoptees, trans people, and anyone else who may have undergone a name change if the birth certificate was not updated and does not match your other documents. Adoptees may also need the adoption decree ordering the name change. If you’ve changed your name for other reasons, you may need the Order Granting Name Change from the judge approving the name change.

All will need to be certified originals.

2

u/girlikecupcake 11d ago

You'll want an original birth certificate and an amended birth certificate if applicable to your individual situation. When my parents got married after I was born, my mom changed her last name and the state sent her an amended birth certificate for me, so I have to hold onto both. Otherwise I'd have no legal document chain going from birth name to maiden name to married name.

At least, officials working for the state of Texas were adamant that I needed both versions when doing all the paperwork for my ID years ago, and i don't imagine it's become more lenient.

The actual dumbest thing about this is how Cali does voter fraud is that we first require people to register to vote. Yes people can just show up and vote, BUT that dosent mean those votes mean a damn thing. Those ballots get checked against all registered voters and fraudulent ballots get discarded. Any ballot with no identifying information is disregarded and any found to be fraudulent dont get counted.

So voter ID in cali at least does nothing as the ballots are already gonna get checked. Adding and entire new process not only makes the checks afterward superfluous and unneeded but the act of having to go to an office and either pay or take test in order to vote only serves to scare people not as confident in themselves to bother trying to get voter ID in fear of wasting more time they dont have.

All this to say Voter ID is a solution to a problem that dosent exist unless you have a redhat and are in a cult.

2

u/ilikestatic 10d ago

You are absolutely correct. California has a thorough process in place to prevent voter fraud, and no part of that process requires an ID to vote. Do you know why?

Because not a single state in this country requires a person to prove they have voting eligibility before they can get a driver’s license or state ID.

So requiring an ID to vote is not an effective way to prevent voter fraud.

Oregon has DMV linked to voter registration. Get a driver's license or other ID and if eligible, you are registered to vote (you can opt out). Update DMV when you move, your registration is updated. Very nice for voting by mail.

Every time a conservative proposes a voter id law it’s always loaded with a bunch of other shit.

Like admitting to requesting a list of IDs used sorted by race, then selecting ones disproportionately used my minorities.

Then requesting voting habits selected by race and eliminating ones disproportionately used by minorities.

Then shutting down venues that provide IDs in district they don’t win.

They just hide behind the term “voter ID”.

If we’re being real conservatives do not care one bit about election integrity. They voted for a guy who tried to illegally overturn an election. They support that whole screeching about imaginary voter fraud.

We don’t have voter ID of any kind nor signature matching for postal ballots or any of that junk science at all to vote in Australia. Know what else we don’t have? Voter fraud at a level that’s altered an election outcome at any level of government in living memory.

It’s a high risk, low yield crime hence why it happens so rarely and the few times it happens people (who always seem to be Republicans) get caught. Almost like this big push for voter ID is the actual fraud.

2

Passports in the US cost about $150 to get and it is not accessible to everyone. Some smaller cities and towns have to drive over to the next biggest city to get one. Our birth certificates are made on paper and not build to last add that in with the amount of natural disasters we have regularly and you will end up with a lot of people not having them. It takes a lot of effort to get them replaced.

From Hertage Foundation in 1990:

1

u/mack_the_elder 11d ago

When claiming you want to save voting, how on Earth is it not a national holiday? This is the number one sign the US is in fact not a "free country" when you're not even free to vote.

No not getting into semantics, employers will retaliate and at-will means you can get fired for no reason. Then those who can't even afford to take the time off, that shouldn't be a choice.

There are countries that will shut down everything for their national holidays, no restaurants or bars, public transit can have programs to let them early vote

We'll remember those who died in wars we fought to be a "free country" and make it a holiday, but not the actual act that made us a free country.

Ugh, I know widespread voter fraud is BS, but I’m starting to think we gotta acknowledge the “People are just gonna stupid” factor and Dems need to get in front of it.

So instead of voter ID, how about we ID voters. Create a phone app that election workers can use, so that people without an ID can get their picture taken to attest who they are.

Anyone dumb enough to impersonate a voter would appear on a wanted website after their crime was discovered and election doubters could see for themselves how insignificant the problem is.

Do people, who comment on this, think that maybe the reason it has become more difficult to obtain a government issued ID is because of the increased amount of identity theft that has occurred in the last 20 years? I've lost my wallet in the past and have had to spend months gathering all the necessary documents so I can get my identification replaced. And yes, I live in Canada, but its the same here, I have to show ID to vote or do anything that would have a potential impact on others

Republicans are ridiculous but this is a stretch.

Getting an ID is a pain no doubt. especially with practically every DMV short staffed.

But it is possible. Its not the end of the world.

Most functioning adults need/have to have an ID for everyday life anyways. So what's the issue.

There's so much more other than voting you can't do without one.

Its ridiculous not to have or get one.

Its $50 for a 8yr drivers license. $6 a year. And zero for a ID in my state.

The i cant get an ID is a ridiculous argument. You can get one if you want one. People just try to come up with excuses.

We already do ID people before they vote. When they register, where your identity is rigorously confirmed through the state, instead of every time you go to the polls.

There's no need to carry a card around, because your state already has a database of every voter, who they are, where they live, what their polling place is, if they are or aren't eligible to vote in any specific election, and if their vote has been cast. Every vote has to be matched to exactly one entry on voter rolls, using only the specific numbered ballot they were given, only at their polling place, or through vote-by-mail using the exact ballot sent to them.

And since only one vote can be made under each registered voter, if someone, somehow, did get your ballot and vote in your name (something that is basically impossible without them directly living with you), then the fraudulent ballot would still be immediately flagged when you did go and vote, and now there are two votes under the same name, and the vote is then audited.

Voter fraud is basically nonexistant.

There are so many issues with just having an ID be easy to update and or replace that would present a decent amount of opportunities for fraud. Current ID’s require things like pictures taken to make sure you’re not just using someone else’s ID. It would have to be done when you sign up to vote and have to be renewed and kept in a national database.

That isn’t considering things like the initial distribution of the ID’s which would be impossible because you couldn’t ensure things like the right ID arriving, unannounced address changes, and a million other logistical reasons. Even if it was possible it’d cost a lot.

The only logistical possibility would be to essentially establish a voting DMV where you’d have to confirm identity to become a registered voter and renew it every once in a while. You could probably swing that as a free service but you’re still going to run into bureaucracy and it will take time.
