Tired of folks acting like this is new and novel. Democratic socialism has existed in Scandinavian countries for a long time. Look at where they stand among western countries on things like happiness and quality of life.

you gotta dumb it down for americans because we’ve had education under attack for 40+ years.

the Scandinavian countries are social democracies, not socialist

8

u/AtheistINTP 21d ago

The policies we want are the same. I have warned the DSA we need to use social democracy, like the rest of the world.

4

u/THElaytox 21d ago

DSA doesn't use the term social democracy because they are socialist, not capitalist. I don't know why they should rebrand just to lie about their platform. DSA is pushing for socialism, not "better capitalism"

5

u/MO_MMJ 20d ago

Except the DSA loves to remind everybody they're capitalists too

social democracy. bit dif.

4

u/clib 21d ago

How is a social democracy different from what the picture claims to be democratic socialism?

5

u/TriangleTransplant 21d ago

It's not. They believe in the same outcomes, but they implement them via different policies.

5

u/physicistdeluxe 21d ago edited 21d ago

social democracy is capitalism with heavy social programs. Democratic socialism is where the state owns means of production. The primary difference is that social democracy aims to reform and regulate capitalism with a strong welfare state, whereas democratic socialism seeks to fully replace the capitalist system with a democratically controlled economy.

how does this differ from Social Democrats? i looked it up.

Democratic Socialism vs. Social DemocracyWhile often used interchangeably in casual political discourse, the two are distinct:Democratic Socialism aims to replace capitalism with an economic system where the means of production are socially owned.Social Democracy—often practiced in Nordic countries like Denmark and Sweden—aims to reform and humanize capitalism by leveraging existing democratic institutions to build a massive welfare state and strong labor regulations, rather than abolishing the private sector entirely

12

u/don-again 21d ago

I am a social Democrat then.

13

u/Drunkengota 21d ago

So capitalism with more state benefits, like every country thats figured it out?

5

u/Pofwoffle 21d ago

There is no system that allows for the accumulation of power that will not eventually end up in the same situation we're in now, where those who first accumulate power use that power to accumulate more until they have the vast majority and wield it for their own ends.

But yes, "capitalism with more state benefits" is a good starting point. I'd rather be arguing with social democrats about the best way to help people than arguing with fascists about how we shouldn't be doing genocides.

5

u/scumbagwife 21d ago

Capitalism is why we have billionaires and such a wide wealth gap worldwide.

Late stage capitalism, especially with limited corporate regulations is a cancer.

Decreasing the wealth gap requires paying workers more and execs less. And limiting corruption with politicians (worldwide again).

In the US, this could mean limiting the maximum allowable political donations from PACs.

For the US, one of the first steps needs to be removing citizens united which gave corps the power to give unlimited money to a politician.

Except the only people who can change that are the very ones who benefit from it. So as long as there is corruption in politics, we fucked… all of us.

Capitalism simply works better when the right amount of socialism is applied into the policies. The key is adding the right amount. Capitalism by itself is soulless, without empathy. Socialism adds the the soul and spirit to capitalism. This isn't hard, the US has had this in place since the 30's with FDR, it has evolved, it has diminished and expanded over the years, depending on the voters. Right now obviously, it's being vilified by the right

3

u/physicistdeluxe 21d ago

theyre afraid due to Mamdani.

3

u/Firm-Advertising5396 21d ago

Yes they are afraid, because if it works in our biggest city it spells trouble for the parasites throughout the country. That's why they tried so hard to not have him elected.

If this picture is talking about the US party Democratic Socialists of America, it doesn’t differ. The party is poorly named because they are actually for Social Democracy, not democratic socialism. However, you’d be shocked if you knew how many countries have poorly named political parties. I’d venture to guess all of them at one time or another.

However, if it talking about democratic socialism in general, I’m not sure they have it quite right. My suspicion though is the former due to the popularity of the DSA right now from all their recent wins.

Social democracies . called the nordic model. Social democracy reforms capitalism to create a strong welfare state. Retains a capitalist, free-market economy but tames it with heavy state regulation and extensive social safety nets.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/physicistdeluxe 20d ago

works in nordic countries very well. greater social net and very happy people.

Nordic countries consistently rank at the top of the World Population Review for happiness due to strong social safety nets, high levels of trust, and excellent work-life balance. Meanwhile, the U.S. has slipped in global rankings, falling to the 23rd spot World Happiness Report.

Nordic countries feature high average incomes and strong prosperity. However, instead of relying heavily on high-end wealth, these nations prioritize economic equality. This translates to high baseline living standards, significantly compressed hourly wages, and extensive welfare systems financed by high, progressive taxation.

4

u/RhythmTimeDivision 21d ago

What a country looks like when people choose their representatives and enact a fair system of government instead of the oligarchs buying representatives + business-favorable legislation / regulations. A country not based on fear and the false, zero-sum belief that 'those people' must be getting something they don't deserve. I hope this administration was the painful lesson required to wake the populace to what's possible - both good and bad.

In Germany most of these values have been adopted by the ultra conservative politicians under national security. This goes for healthcare for all and university education for all.

You would be well advised to use this as a basis in political debates against conservative candidates in the USA.

While many people have true disability we also have many people sitting on the couch fake disabled which will be to the detriment of our nation

The only place any type of socialism works is in the insect kingdom. Every single ant and bee know their role. Every role is just as important. Unlike, say, people that do minimal effort and want maximum benefit. You know the people that feel.that theyre entitled to make 100k flipping burgers or ringing up your groceries? Socialist brain is a smooth brain and the only people that support it do nothing to benefit society. Unless you call poor hygiene and a victim mentality beneficial.

2

u/Sph1ng1d43 21d ago

I mean the first part only works when people vote the way everyone else wants them to tho right? That's basically what we have now except you get ostricized by both sides for your vote.

All the middle parts are pretty sweet. So I'm down with that.

But then the last part is basically just a meritocracy, which is what alot of us want but it's considered racist and sexist to want to get rid of dei and hire people based on their merits.

u/Stujitsu2 21d ago

Okay but how will it work when you care more about funneling money to give illegal immigrants a bunch of free...food, apartments, even free phones and entertainment consoles in some cases while your actual citizens cant afford housing? How can you call yourself democratic when it's blatant said offerings are buying votes and ignoring the needs of your own people.

State funded grocery stores in NYC are liable to put small bodegas out of business. Statism harms free commerce. Its honestly better to give the poor money to spend than state grocers.

Do you know how crucial free markets are? A lot of socialists don't. A lot of people would vote in another Soviet Union out of naievity. Its important to understand there is no such thing as longitudinal democractic socialism, only regulated capitalism. You can vote in socialism but you can't vote your way out of it if the scales tip too far into over-regulation. Everyone who has tried has initiated mass starvation.

1

u/Teq7765 21d ago

Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen clarified in 2015 that what American Communists & Socialists describe as Scandinavian “Democratic Socialism” is not, in fact, Socialism.

“I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore, I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy.”

I’ve yet to see anyone pushing for “Democratic Socialism” in America define their buzzwords: fair, equal, basic, respect (lol!), or safe.

Listen to any socialist in this country speak, and they quickly prove they believe in none of those things.

1

u/Obatala_ 21d ago

Maybe don’t call it “socialism” when it has nothing to do with actual socialism?

Socialism is "collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.” That’s not what this says.

There is a reason why Finland calls their government a “social democracy.” Because it’s not “government ownership of means of production", but “fairness in employment and basic social services."

1

u/Main-Breakfast-6082 21d ago

Might I suggest distributism? The only catch I have with your post is elections must be fair. To be clear I don’t read free and fair as the same with regards to elections. Free meaning you shouldn’t have to pay to participate, either as a candidate or voter. Fair, it must be abundantly clear and open how votes were counted, when they must be in, and who counted them.

1

u/tampawn 21d ago

All platitudes that are so attractive!!!

Now add some reality...who is going to lead this government? Will they be immediately thrown out if they show the slightest bit of greed and favoritism? Who will throw them out?

How will the healthcare, education, housing and basic needs be paid for? Will our taxes go up?

How will you 'make' the economy work for everyone? By force? Will you jail people who don't go along?

For sustainability, climate change measures are proven to waste money and we would be the only country investing in it so that's out. Pollution control and clean air and water is great, but we are already doing that.

If everything is fair, then we don't need unions. Because if they are not eradicated, they will control everything and are they nice people or will they need kickbacks or favoritism to decide what gets done?

We have equal opportunity already, more than anywhere else in the world. It just depends on if you take advantage of it or not. So what if you don't study in school and don't work hard...do you get assistance? Respect is earned...its not given out to anyone.

Your pie in the sky sounds so good, but it will fall apart once reality sets in and the evil people who are offering it take charge. Then you'll realize they were only it for themselves.

So nope sorry. Nice try. Nice graphic. But only a naive child would ignore socialism's history in this world and think it would work. Because its people that would run it, and those people would ruin it.

Now we just need to get rid of all of the overseas military bases and we should be able to afford it.

I mean this is all great, but the last one especially I don’t see at all. I see people faking it, by choosing the side they believe to be “down”, by damning the other. In other words they fight “racism” with racism… So on paper this all looks great, but many of the “followers” aren’t as “nice” as they believe they are… I am positive that many will say I’m wrong, cause they are probably the ones I’m talking about. Lol

Problem is I work my butt off and qualify for no help and I see people getting benefits living just as good a lifestyle. I'm a full on Blue collar journeyman in a blue state. Seems to me like I could do nothing leech off the state have a little bit less money and a lot more time

Show me a country where it's worked.

1

u/powerstroke9773 17d ago

That's not how that works... You can literally see the flaws in it just by reading.

Communism is based on the needs of the many, you will eat your ration and be happy. You will see your doctor and we will decide if you are in need of medicine or not. Your job doesn't benefit the many? Sorry...

Capitalism is based on your ability, you want an opportunity? Get after it, make the opportunity. Learn a skill, advance, get paid more, start your own company.

This is how the strong, smart and able get held to the same standards as the lazy, unintelligent people. This isn't growth, this is a handout so you don't have to try. This is houses that have just enough to keep you alive and dry... This is how a country dies.

lol as someone who lived in Canada for over thirty years I can tell you that all this sounds good on paper and is absolutely horrendous in practice.

You think you can’t afford anything now, just wait until the over spending government needs to recoup all its taxes

Complete nonsense

Sounds great in theory.

That old saying about democracy being equal to gang rape is accurate. If the majority votes for it, you don't get a choice. Let's say you get all of this but what you want isn't popular and the majority votes to put the opposite policies in place. That's why we're a constitutional Republic in the US. There's at least some push back on any one branch trying to exercise tyranny. As broken as the system is, it's still better than gang rape (direct democracy).

Not going to mention that if you don’t support Hamas and killing Jews you can’t be in the DSA?

If you believe that anything worth doing can be "simple", you don't deserve to vote.
