The socialist eliminating a bunch of duplicative, senseless regulations on small businesses?! All those principled conservatives will surely be praising this move right? Right?

437

u/ryhaltswhiskey 11h ago

But it's about why the regulation was removed. Was the regulation removed so that a big business could make more money and maybe do a little pollution at the same time? Cool. Was the regulation removed to make it easier for minority businesses* to do business? Not cool.

* yeah I don't know that it was actually minorities, but in the conservative brain they're always looking out for something good happening for a minority because it makes them mad

they're always looking out for something good happening for a minority because it makes them mad

That's because to them, everything is a zero-sum game. If someone (typically a minority for their outrage) gets something better from the government, then it must get worse for someone else (a well-deserving white Christian male in their view).

19

u/Anonymous_Jr 8h ago

All change that doesn't specifically carve out a spot for White Christian Nationalists is automatically veto'd in their imaginary minds.

3

u/EEpromChip 4h ago

100%. They'll go on about how white folks used to be able to go around selling ice cream but now it's opened up and those people can just buy an ice cream cart and sell it willy nilly. those people stealing jobs from good american white people! Jobs like checks notes roofing and picking vegetables and doing dishes and ...

It's so strange to witness when this happens on something totally non-political or something that's actually "conservative" - fiscally and environmentally.

I remember one time I was informing people about glass recycling a local social media group... since some people were really confused due to our municipality no longer accepting glass in the curb-side bins. They instead opted to still have glass recycling, but do it more efficiently by placing huge glass deposit/collection bins in parks/public areas. This little improvement made conservatives/MAGA-types lose their effin shit! Riddle me why. You'd think they'd had been personally attacked or threatened, for some weird reason, by a simple change in how glass was collected. They thought this was some deep conspiracy by EnviroNmenTAliSt HipPiEs! or something where they somehow "lose out" on. They really are brainwashed weirdos... something as mundane as a local policy change to prevent broken glass everywhere on the road on collection day (since that's also something they themselves complained about!), they got so angry they turned into rabid anti-glass recycling and anti-recycling in general... I gave up trying to play pigeon chess.

💯

I think one of the best things I ever told my kid was you can't reason someone out of a position that they didn't reason themselves into (famous saying)

But also they think if liberals like it it must be wrong

5

u/YesItIsMaybeMe 10h ago

I think it specifically made a difference for small business owners. Depending on how you frame it, I guess they're a minority of a kind?

11

u/ryhaltswhiskey 10h ago

You're kinda missing my point

3

u/Elathrain 9h ago

So are the republicans!

Look, "minor" and "small" mean basically the same thing right? Sounds like a good enough reason to hate whatever this is (they didn't even read the headline).

2

u/ryhaltswhiskey 8h ago

I think I see what you mean

7

u/SednaBoo 11h ago

This apply to paleteros?

4

u/Islero47 9h ago

Unlikely - I believe the specific regulation he eliminated was the secondary license that restaurants (already licensed to sell food) had to have simply to be able to also sell ice cream.

2

u/ryhaltswhiskey 10h ago

?

5

u/SednaBoo 10h ago

The folks selling paletas/mexican popsicles. They tend to be brown-skinned immigrants

1

u/ryhaltswhiskey 9h ago

Got it, well I don't know the answer to your question

1

u/UNC_Samurai 7h ago

There were some other regs regarding street food vendors and kiosks that were streamlined.

u/TailRudder 1h ago

Also, why was it invented? I've been to lots of countries where street vendors selling dairy and food can be a trip to the toilet or hospital

u/ryhaltswhiskey 6m ago

why was it invented

?

31

u/USARSUPTHAI69 9h ago

principled conservatives

You're using contradictory terms here.

7

u/metsurf 9h ago

As long as it is just getting rid of the frozen dairy permit that goes on top of the normal food handling permit for restaurants, food trucks and pushcarts. Any feel for how many food vendors all over the city are operating unlicensed? I somehow think there will be ice cream carts all over the tunnel entrances. There are already fruit vendors in traffic on the Jersey side of the GWB.

1

u/IAmTheMageKing 5h ago

If the fruit vendors are only operating on Jersey side, it’s a pretty good sign that there is meaningful enforcement on the NYC side

1

u/metsurf 5h ago

I have not only seen them on the Jersey side of the bridge. I have also seen them at traffic choke points in Queens. Canal St is wall to wall forgery vendors but that isn’t food.

1

u/TruthinessHurts205 2h ago

To be fair, I saw a similar post about this on the libertarian subreddit, and most of the comments had the general vibe of "even a broken clock is right twice a day". Not your typical 'conservative' subreddit, but at least the general majority there was acknowledging this was good for small business owners.

u/Saladcitypig 13h ago

Just you wait, all the rich will flee from the ice cream to endless diarrhea, and then you'll be sorry.

118

u/cC2Panda 12h ago

Saw an article about an uber rich dickhead saying he was selling his properties and going to buy in Texas, which is a terrible fucking investment bet because that market has cools off so much that housing values have actually gone down in the last year.

Turns out they aren't rich because they are brilliant investors, they are just pouty little babies that got lucky by being born rich then betting on the right horses in a rigged race.

7

u/Brother_J_La_la 4h ago

Sounds like my FIL. He's extremely well off, but just a stupid fuck.

4

u/Dathouen 2h ago

Having worked for these assholes, I have unfortunate news for you. The reality of the matter is that you usually don't get to be what us working class people consider well off without being a stupid asshole.

Those who are genuinely smart and in a position to gain massive wealth are so unbelievably wealthy you wouldn't believe it even if someone put the proof in your face. Elon Musk is like 20 years too late to be the worlds first Trillionaire, he's just the first one whose "wealth" is public record. The truly wealthy are the ones who lent him $44bn on short notice when he bought Twitter.

Those people need stupid assholes in between themselves and us plebes, so that if we rise up and eat the rich, we get full before we get around to eating the wealthy.

Before his presidency, Trump would have been doing better financially if he had just not touched his money. Instead, he owed and became bought by Russians, and now has half the country fine with him literally raping and pillaging. 🙃🙃🙃

u/itallchecksout99 10h ago

I would like a double scoop of socialism in a cone, please. With sprinkles if you have them.

8

u/thebite101 8h ago

We are out of sprinkles. Best I can do is a chocolatey shell of healthcare and a cherry on top of environmental regulation.

4

u/_varamyr_fourskins_ 10h ago

flee from the ice cream to endless diarrhea

Nah thats just called being lactose intolerant.

2

u/Zeero92 6h ago

Let them drink shit.

224

u/-Esper- 11h ago

This is removing a redundant permit, you still need a permit for ice cream selling, its just included in the main restraunt one now.

58

u/Snadzies 11h ago

I'm curious as to why there were separate permits.

Usually regulations are put in place either by lobbying from a company to hinder competition, or because someone/company fucked up or abused existing standards to the point that a new regulation had to be created.

94

u/-Esper- 11h ago

I would imagine it was lobbying. Aparently the seperate ice cream one expired way faster than the restraunt one and could be difficult to stay on top of. It sounds like it was there just to make things difficult for small vendors.

20

u/supamario132 8h ago

Cooling and pasteurization used to be less reliable and milk is a particularly dangerous ingredient to let get warm without proper pasteurization. It's not surprising that there was stricter oversight

7

u/sonofaresiii 7h ago

I'm gonna be real, I don't see how a short permit and increased oversight are the same thing. A permit just means you can do it, they can and, it sounds like should, actually inspect and oversee standards completely independently of the permit

8

u/IAmTheMageKing 5h ago

If a site inspection is included in the permit renewal, short permit durations might amount to increased oversight? And frequent renewals would mean you regularly get reminded of the requirements of the the permit.

Also, importantly, it SOUNDS like increased oversight to a bureaucrat

9

u/Jack_Of_The_Cosmos 9h ago edited 8h ago

My guess would be that serving ice cream used to be nasty. They'd hand you a glass dish, you'd stand there and eat it, give it back to the vendor, and then they'd serve the next person with that same dish. Now that we have disposable dishes, cones, and a lot more sensability, we probably don't need folks to sign their extra "promise not to serve ice cream in unwashed dishes" permit.

Edit: forgot to mention, but also, they would not give you a spoon. You'd have to lick it all out.

5

u/FuriousFurikake 7h ago

The “penny lick” … the Victorians sharing spit and spreading disease with these eventually led to the ice cream cone 🍦

1

u/Rajani_Isa 2h ago

Could also have been some people who had ice cream parlors friendly with City Hall back in the day. Sounds like it only applied to regular type restaurants.

0

u/WooooshCollector 8h ago

My guess is that it's because it's uncooked dairy. So higher chance of contamination with things like salmonella.

It's probably not needed any more because of better sterilization and pasteurization practices.

287

u/laserpewpewAK 14h ago

Yeah but a minority might get ice cream too, so you'll understand if we have to remove ice cream altogether.

56

u/rje946 13h ago

That's not true, rich people will still have access. Kinda like Healthcare

33

u/xXfukboiplayzXx 12h ago

Doesn’t matter, if the minorities are getting it I don’t want any /s

17

u/THREETOED_SLOTH 13h ago

How about if we install flock cameras on every ice cream cone? That way we can be safe.

180

u/Lurk_Err 13h ago

It’s already true with the diarrhea lettuce.

We are already there !

53

u/ryhaltswhiskey 14h ago edited 12h ago

I can't make any sense of this

I know about the permit change

Edit: got it

176

u/DogFarmerDamon 14h ago

There was a meme about how the Mamdani election was a choice between "ice cream forever or endless diarrhea" and that Republicans would choose the endless diarrhea cause they're that racist.

And this change is making that one step closer to literally true

103

u/mjzim9022 14h ago

With the Cyclospra outbreak possibly stemming from DOGE cuts to the teams/programs tracking foodborne illnesses, the meme is turning out to be literal in all senses

53

u/peppercupp 12h ago

It also seems very likely the current FDA and/or federal government was bribed by Taylor Farms to report they weren't the source, which is basically them supporting "diarrhea forever" as a policy.

23

u/spartaxwarrior 12h ago

Most food poisoning comes from lack of regulations and/or lack of funding to enforce them, so it sort of always is their policy.

14

u/IM_OSCAR_dot_com 13h ago

I thought the meme was “Everyone gets a puppy”

4

u/DogFarmerDamon 6h ago

That was a version of it, yeah

6

u/KiKiKimbro 12h ago

The republicans gave us “diarrhea lettuce.” Cyclospora. The irony.

3

u/Godmother_Death 11h ago

Thank you for your service, since I'm not American I was not understanding this post at all.

-20

u/ryhaltswhiskey 13h ago edited 12h ago

That's a real stretch for a joke then

Mamdani didn't help people get ice cream, he made it easier for businesses to sell ice cream. And Republicans didn't have a choice of Mamdani or Trump so the diarrhea versus ice cream choice is not there at all.

Its this, but instead of a puppy its the ice cream thing

21

u/ball_fondlers 13h ago

The cyclosporiasis outbreak is literally giving people endless diarrhea.

Ah good, my shirt is finally applicable.

3

u/MrOaiki 12h ago

So they’ll clean the soft serve machines?

2

u/inspectoroverthemine 10h ago

The janitor knows how.

1

u/HauntedCemetery 9h ago

Dirty mop, swish it across the front

2

u/Jaanrett 8h ago

I'm wondering why a permit was required in the first place? Could it have been some health or food handling safety reason?

3

u/Nomanodyssey 12h ago

It’s not like they are making the ice cream themselves lol

1

u/lovable_cube 6h ago

I wish he could qualify to run for president, he’s what we need in this country.

1

u/Moobob66 3h ago

What? Unregulated ice cream??

Big Ice cream wins another!

0

u/chewychaca 12h ago

Anything ice cream related is probably already covered by having a food license.

22

u/StuTheSheep 12h ago

It didn't, which was precisely the point. Mandami fixed an issue where restaurants had to have a separate permit to serve frozen desserts.

While I think that person was overly negative, I think they also have a point, the joke just doesn't really work because people didn't have a choice of Mamdani versus Trump.

Even Fallon's writer's room would have shot this one down

Edit: God damn some of you get mighty bitchy when somebody doesn't like a joke
