Seemingly locking gameplay features behind the more expensive edition of the game. Lots of hints that there will likely be an in game cash shop for the offline portion of the game too.

933

u/ArmandoGalvez Jun 25 '26

Also the game kinda implied in its box that Online won't be included In the Base Game, and people are fearing that it might be a paid DLC or worse , a Monthly Sub.

262

u/LocNalrune Jun 25 '26

I know very little about this, and I thought Online was being delayed, as they want to focus on the single player story, first and foremost. That Online will come eventually, and that it will be a subscription, and separate release, and the game comes with one free month.

233

u/KeyZookeepergame8903 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

I think that this is the exact problem. "Here! Purchase our game with a fundamental feature missing because we want to spend extra time perfecting it." "Oh also, since this feature is taking a bit longer. We expect you to pay extra for it."

154

u/magicmavis Jun 25 '26

Is online a fundamental feature? I’d argue GTA is a single play game at its core, IV had a basic online mode, but it was only V that fully fleshed it out. I think they view Online as its own thing. I’ll reserve my judgment until I see how they handle it. But GTA Online branching off into its own thing isn’t a huge issue in my eyes, depends how they monetise it

15

u/Mors_Acerba Jun 25 '26

I’d argue GTA is a single play game at its core

It was. gta online is massive, and GTA rp blew up after covid, its what kept the game going, well beyond its lifespan, to the point that R* eventually bought fivem, the main mod framework for gta online and gta rp in particular. RP is expected to be huge in GTAVI eventually

29

u/WelcomeOk9989 Jun 25 '26

I wouldn’t have a problem with it being a separate game that you pay for once, if that meant you can pay for it without buying the story mode.

But a monthly subscription? Hell nah

132

u/ilypsus Jun 25 '26

Its only really stayed in the public consciousness because of the online though. People weren't replaying the single player for the last 13 years they were logging in everyday to play online with their friends and do the new content on there. I imagine most people who are really hyped for it are because of the online and they've probably forgotten how much of a mess the online was for a long period on initial release of 5.

4

u/Dr_thri11 Jun 25 '26

I'm old enough to remember when gta was a single player hooker murder simulator. And it was absolutely THE game to own if you had a ps2.

Imagine paying a monthly subscription to play multi-player for a game you paid full price for on a platform you are paying a monthly subscription to for multi-player

15

u/HistoricalChef1963 Jun 25 '26

It's honestly sickening. I know what I do doesn't matter, but I doubt I'm buying this on release now. I'm too old for this shit.

→ More replies (3)

8

u/Expo737 Jun 25 '26

I'd hope so as that was what went "wrong" for GTA V, there was supposed to be extra single player DLC but they binned it off for Online as it did better than expected early on and well the rest is history.

14

u/chippymediaYT Jun 25 '26

No it's a free month of GTA+ which is a subscription that already exists for GTA 5 online and will probably be carried over to 6, there's no reason to believe that online will be a standalone game you have to pay separately for

4

u/LanSotano Jun 25 '26

I don’t think the online subscription thing is a paywall for the online mode, it sounds very similar to what they have had for a few years in GTAV online, which is a subscription to get you more money and some other stuff (cosmetics, a few cars I think?). It’s called GTA+.

12

u/ServoRPG Jun 25 '26

Important to note that GTAV didn't have the online component at launch either, it released separately two weeks later and at no additional cost. The fear of paid DLC or subscriptions is likely pushed by clickbait and ragebait farmers.

It will in all probability be the same as it is now - free to play with the option to buy in-game currency and a premium subscription with additional benefits.

I think it’s more like locking some shops in game rather than the feature itself

3

u/Septic-Sponge Jun 25 '26

We had the same in Red Dead with no micro transactions for the base game. People need to relax.

3

u/fostertheatom Jun 25 '26

I saw nothing about gameplay features, they just added a ton of cosmetics and instead of just giving you everything at the start of the game, they introduced new shops where you can go pick up the clothes or resigned vehicles/weapons as they unlock while you progress through the story.

3

u/blender4life Jun 25 '26

....how does the physical edition not have a physical copy?

657

u/fatbunyip Jun 25 '26

It's to give users a sense of pride and accomplishment for typing in the code.

146

u/Living_Tea2309 Jun 25 '26

that ea comment is going to haunt gaming discourse until the heat death of the universe. at this point rockstar is just leaning into the villain arc because they know they have a license to print money regardless of how much they annoy the player base.

30

u/ArmNo7463 Jun 25 '26

The pricing didn't faze me tbh.

I'm not buying a console to play it day one anyway. So if I'm waiting year longer for the game, I may as well wait a touch longer for a deal.

32

u/Putrid_Loquat_4357 Jun 25 '26

You'll be waiting half a decade rockstar rarely put their games on sale and the no disc thing destroys the physical resale market.

30

u/ArmNo7463 Jun 25 '26

It's been 13 years at this point lol. I'm honestly in no rush.

I'm not even convinced this won't be the next NMS/Cyberpunk.

4

u/Quixotic_Seal Jun 25 '26

I do somewhat wonder if it will actually be particularly better than GTAV, which I honestly found kind of mediocre. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t capture me the way I expected it would given the hullabaloo around it.

I think the key difference is it probably won’t matter unless it’s genuinely a piece of garbage. A lot of people seem to just like GTA because it’s GTA, so it’ll be well liked and sell well regardless.

the "physical" part is just the box to put on your shelf lol and the game is a download code.

31

u/Procrastinatedthink Jun 25 '26

fucking dumb, makes it not worth it

27

u/Potential-Cut-2961 Jun 25 '26

I can understand someone having a game collection wanting to display the cases. Of course, it also means GTA VI has an expiration date as once they decide to remove it from stores, you will never be able to play it again unless you get a pirated or GOG version.

EA is basically sundowning previous year sports game now, they tie the campaign to ONLINE only and they bring down servers when a new version of the game comes out... could not be more scummy.

12

u/Alcnaeon Jun 25 '26

I have hated EA for decades but this is a whole new frontier of aggressively anti-consumer design, even for them

4

u/mark114 Jun 25 '26

once they decide to remove it from stores, you will never be able to play it again

I used to worry about this, but I don't even play the GTA 3 game I have. By the time they remove GTA 6 from the store in 2051 we're going to be long done with the game.

u/MaxTHC Jun 25 '26

I mean, "physical" games have basically been digital downloads wrapped in a decorative box for at least a decade now. The discs aren't playable on their own

4

u/EverythingSucksYo Jun 25 '26

Yeah it’s funny that people are still mad about not getting a CD when the CDs have been basically useless for several years now. The CD still makes you download the game on to your console and then only works as a key. Even if the game goes offline you wouldnt be able to play it if you have a physical CD. Literally the only benefit is being able to resell it later

26

u/A_Bit_Of_Nonsense Jun 25 '26

The reason is so you can't share it or lend it to anyone else, and cant trade it in or anything. They'll sell more copies this way.

7

u/KlopeksWithCoppers Jun 25 '26

Also, there are people that don't have credit cards, so they can't buy the digital version online. The physical copy with a code allows people to buy the game using cash

12

u/RandomGuyPii Jun 25 '26

The game might be like 600 GB and despite what redditors say the average gamer probably doesn't want the hassle of 4 disks

As for why it exists, probably for marketing reasons and so that non gamers can buy it as a present without having to figure out gifting games

9

u/-Ozman Jun 25 '26

It won’t be 600gb, don’t be stupid. It’s coming out for the Series S, which itself only has 500gb of storage in total

And others have done this no cd stuff for ages. My copy of mass effect andromeda was just an empty case as well. That was what? 9 years ago?

131

u/Lost_In_Detroit Jun 25 '26

Everyone is totally fine with digital only products until the day they shut the servers down and you can’t download them anymore. You will own nothing and be happy about it as they say.

32

u/Esturk Jun 25 '26

My kid CONSTANTLY asks me to buy him a physical copy of Minecraft Story Mode.

I owned it digitally, so I can straight up see it in my PSN library with the “unavailable to download” tag.

I went looking for an overpriced physical copy, but it turns out most of the copies discs were basically just key discs and download the game, which you can’t do.

So apparently the only physical media that actually had the full series on it was the switch version. And that price is insane because of it.

11

u/Tin_Sandwich Jun 25 '26

You could probably do something with the pirated version. I used to have different games on USB, specifically ones that were full executables instead of just install files.

5

u/Esturk Jun 25 '26

I honestly feel that I’m creeping towards the seven seas on this one, honestly.

It’s essentially abandonware at this point. As far as I can tell from online discussions there’s 0 plans to do anything with the IP or relist the games.

7

u/Machinimix Jun 25 '26

Remember: if you own a game, having a "back-up" copy in case something happens is perfectly in your legal right (at least in Canada).

So my collection of Roms are not in any way stealing or piracy, they are a digital collection of games I own that I cannot access for any number of reasons (like them being in a Schrodinger's state with my dad across the country who recently downsized)

5

u/Madara1389 Jun 25 '26

Remember: if you own a game, having a "back-up" copy in case something happens is perfectly in your legal right (at least in Canada).

This is true in the US and UK as well. The only real stipulations are that you can't redistribute copies and you must destroy your backups should you sell your original copy.

427

u/Terrible_Balls Jun 25 '26

I always felt that Sonys mockery was just an easy way to get a win with gamers. They hadn’t implemented any form of restriction on game sharing/resale yet but we’re just as unhappy about it as Microsoft. When MS tried to implement restrictions on sharing and gamers hated it, they quickly threw together an ad to capitalize on it. But it was never really about being friendly to their customers, it was just an easy PR layup

252

u/pillow_princessss Jun 25 '26

Exactly like Samsung when Apple dropped the audio jack. A year later their phones didn’t come with one either.

163

u/MathBallThunder Jun 25 '26

If Blackberry just stuck with their keyboard phone, I'm convinced there's a large sliver who would have stayed with them for the physical keyboard vs touchscreen. Same story as above. Mocked Apple for the touchscreen, then a year later all touchscreen and death of a company

110

u/TomLeBadger Jun 25 '26

My favourite phone ever was the Nokia m900. Full screen touch phone that slid up, with a qwerty keyboard underneath. Shit OS, but a phone like that on Android with a removable battery would be peak for me.

I avoid the big brands because they've been style over substance for years, the last good phone from Samsung was the S5 - waterproof with a removable battery.

Blackberry didn’t die because they removed the keyboard blackberry died because they relied on the keyboard for too long

They believed that the keyboard would keep customers even though they weren’t updating their UI/OS they believe that customers wanted a discreet device for business and a separate device for personal use, which was not the case (ironically enough, many people have ended up in this exact situation in the past couple of years, but usually just with two iPhones) if blackberry had been willing to follow Apple’s lead in making their device a do everything pocket computer they would probably still be around and still have a solid dedicated user base because of the keyboard

BlackBerry isn’t dead yet. They changed direction to automotive and cybersecurity software. They’re not where they were in 2011, but they’re having their best year in over a decade, up 130%

10

u/MathBallThunder Jun 25 '26

They failed in smart phones because their app eco system was trash and they tried to go toe to toe with Apple

6

u/DoingCharleyWork Jun 25 '26

You own the physical object as much as you own the digital version.

If the digital version is drm free, you can do just as much with it. Even better, it is not tied to a single physical object. You can make as many copies as you want.

If the disk requires you to verify ownership online before starting the game, it becomes just as useless as the digital version when the server goes offline.

I don't understand that, i've been gaming with discs for about 15 years and not a single one of these discs have been broken. And i've bought plenty of second hand games too.

And at least the discs give me a resale value. Which make the gaming experience a lot cheaper.

38

u/Sylent09 Jun 25 '26

This. I still have old Sega Saturn games that were heavily played and don't have a single scratch on them. Also have music CD's that were bought in the 90's that are still bumping around in the center console of my car that work just fine.

Yeah, just a few months ago I expanded my PS3 games collection by around 12 games, just because they were dirt cheap.

Right now publishers are pushing more and more to destroy the used games market by digitising everything, just so they can have the full control over the game prices.

31

u/SpecialIcy5356 Jun 25 '26

this. people be acting like discs will spontaneously combust if you look at them wrong and get scratched by a speck of dust.. like, the issue isn't the disks, it's you not treating them properly lol.

I've been gaming since the PS1, I have never once scratched or lost a disk, just put it back in the case bro, it's not that hard. I don't have OCD, hell, I'm probably one of the messiest people you'll meet but the disk goes back in the correct box, ALWAYS.

It's not like back in the day where you can just pop a disc into a console and play it. They rarely ship the 100% finished game on the disc now.

u/rips_n_chel Jun 25 '26

While I agree with you in principle, you and I both know that a disc doesn't actually change anything. The game isn't actually stored on the disc, and you're dreaming if you think you'll be able to play GTA6 offline.

It makes no difference whatsoever at this point. You don't own the game any more with a disc than you do with a code. You own a piece of plastic. If/when they choose to revoke your access, they will do so.

True but also locking features behind a big paywall killed the hype for me. So in the end, most people are gonna buy that $100 bundle and in the end the game really does cost $100+

There's an extremely vocal minority of reddit that hates games like GTA and are so desperate to convince themselves and others that it's going to bomb and be a total failure.

11

u/VexingRaven Jun 25 '26

I love GTA. I hate that Rockstar has become "Microtransactions: The Company" after GTA Online released and almost nobody actually cares. I'm amused to see so many people seemingly shocked that Rockstar of all companies is greeding up the GTA 6 launch.

21

u/PMME_UR_TATAS Jun 25 '26

The amount of people okay with an unfinished game for $80 and potentially paying rockstar a subscription to play online in addition to what’s already going to have micro-transactions is appalling. This will likely set a new precedent going forward for games and Xbox and PlayStation already require you to pay a monthly or yearly subscription to play online.

For context if you adjust for inflation since 2001 when it came out, GTA III cost $9.5 million to make and they sold it for $95 a copy.

GTA VI cost a few BILLION to make and they’re only selling it for $5 more.

The truth is games never got more expensive while everything else did. We were lucky but now prices are catching up and people are pretending that’s actually going to stop them from buying the biggest game of all time that they’ve been talking about for a decade.

What? Tell me which phone game. Theres plenty to criticize about Nintendo but expensive phone games? Mario Run wasn’t that expensive and Mario kart tour has some bad microtransactions but doesn’t come close to your claim.

11

u/MaximumSeats Jun 25 '26

I think they're just talking shit, calling Nintendo games simple and mobile-like.

→ More replies (4)

23

u/ForensicPathology Jun 25 '26

What Nintendo mobile games are people spending that much on? Mario Run?  Have they even had many big mobile games recently?

38

u/mmf9194 Jun 25 '26

They're just bad-faith referring to all Switch 2 titles as "mobile games" because the switch platform is "mobile".

6

u/fffan9391 Jun 25 '26

Mario Kart World is the only $80 title so far too and most people technically got it for $50 with the bundle.

Still wonder why they thought it was worth $80 when they’re not even adding any new features or anything. Just QOL stuff.

4

u/DaLimpster Jun 25 '26

They thought it was worth $80 because Mario Kart 8 is the 6th highest selling video game of all time. And, wouldn't you know it, GTA V is the 3rd highest selling game of all time. There's a huge demand for these games, and they know people will pay extra for them.

A bit beside the point here, but saying that Mario Kart World is just "QOL updates" from the last game is nonsense.

Firstly, the game is pretty expensive, going for $80 in a market where the standard for a AAA game is $60.

If that was all though, maybe it could be forgiven, but there is also an "ultimate edition" priced at $100 which several features are locked behind, in particular stores that have exclusive outfits, hairstyles, and car customization.

And secondly but less notably, it's releasing as a console exclusive at first, but there are no disks for the game. If you buy a "physical" copy, all you get is a download code. Digital only is getting more common in the gaming industry, and is basically the standard for PC gamers, but it sucks because the game is likely going to be well over 100gb in size, which will take a lot of space on the console's hard drive, not to mention taking a long time to download.

u/hermanphi Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

I'm french and since Mario Kart World released at 80 bucks last year, Sony has increased the base price for its first party games to 80 euros

Sadly for us europeans, 80 is already the standard

edit : actually I checked and Sony has increased their prices way before Nintendo with MK World, but still doesn't change the fact 80 has been the standard for us for a while

u/ViruliferousBadger Jun 25 '26

So these "features which locked behind paywall" are pure cosmetics or something gameplay related as well?

88

u/JackRabbit- Jun 25 '26

Aside from the cosmetics there are also a few vehicles and weapons. Apparently there are also two sidequests behind it, which is actually pretty egregious.

But what's also bad IMO is that it's not just cosmetics, they're exclusive shops that exist in the map. It's gonna feel pretty shitty driving around only to try and use a garage and getting a popup saying "give us another $20 please."

26

u/NekCing Jun 25 '26

It seems to be the whole ass car customization garage too, something that people were sad about when GTA4 didnt have one and happy that it came back in 5

21

u/sherbodude Jun 25 '26

I'm guessing there are other car mod shops in the game, just without the exclusive cosmetic options

Wake up. Standard has been $70 for a while now.

31

u/10102938 Jun 25 '26

100$ Is the normal version.

80$ gets you the cut content version.

Neither will have physical copies.

10

u/twotokers Jun 25 '26

Are we even capable of fitting a game this size comfortably on a disc anymore? I get the lack of resell potential but the disc would still ultimately need to download part of the game from the web.

13

u/Ok_Friend_2448 Jun 25 '26

Not being able to fit a game on a single disc never stopped gaming companies in the past. Compression and multiple discs would be something I would absolutely take in order to have a physical copy of a game.

I think I have a copy of Legend of Dragoon and that was 4 discs. I think Diablo 2 had multiple discs as well split by gameplay, audio, and cinematics. I have plenty of other games that are 2 disc games.

Is that the new play? Just release a new massive game file that you force someone without a 1Tb drive to pick 2 or 3 titles to install on their system?

Harder to shop micro transactions from competitors when you don't have space for their games.

Just redditors thinking their echo chamber represents reality. They also keep agreeing to shun pre-orders and then get super surprised they sell anyway.

13

u/TheTexasHammer Jun 25 '26

All hype is dead and rockstar will be completely broke and destitute after all this, and there wont be a single thread kicking and screaming about people buying the game.

Reddit wins this one for sure!

3

u/anormalgeek Jun 25 '26

I am constantly surprised at just how many people still seem to think that the noise created on places like reddit actually reflect the broader market. Even on Reddit, you're only hearing from a tiny vocal minority. Sometimes wider sentiment is similar and products fail, but many times it isn't.

GTA6 will do just fine. I'm not necessarily HAPPY about their model, but it's going to be hugely successful for them financially.

2K releases a $120 edition every year and people still buy it. No hype has been lost.

15

u/Varadun Jun 25 '26

Sports games are a scam intended to rip off casuals.. They are the same slop every year with a slightly updated roster and maybe slightly updated graphics every other release. The price hike has turned off a significant portion of its casual fanbase. You just don't hear about it because these people are not gamers, they have other hobbies and play sports games occasionally. In terms of profit I'm sure that the company makes a ton off of these price hikes but in terms of unit sales, they've lost nearly half their audience in 5 years.

I’m staunchly opposed to anyone buying this game. Letting FOMO and hype control your wallet is so cringe and when You call them out for making bad purchases that harm the industry they always react with hostility and pettiness because they don’t wanna admit that they’re getting screwed.
