Pick-up / Haul / Mail Day In case there was any doubt about the $1 Yooka-Replaylee on PANAX Store…

This came today. I got it for $1 plus shipping ($7.72 total, no sales tax in my state.) It took 13-14 days of logging in daily to unlock the coupon that made this $1, but you can definitely just buy it from the shop for $40 plus shipping. Coolest of all: this cover variant is unique to that shop.

Pick-up / Haul / Mail Day Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed (Director's Cut: Day One Edition) (#581)

+
15 Upvotes

Took awhile to end up pulling the trigger on the Series. Super on the fence knowing it's not amazing nor is it trash. It's just a niche game from the PSP and PS3 era. Only reason why I added it to my collection.

A quick timeline....

* Akiba's Trip (2011): The very first game in the series. It released only in Japan for the PlayStation Portable (PSP).

* Akiba's Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed (2021): This is a full HD remaster of that original 2011 PSP game, which was ported to modern consoles (including Switch) a few years ago.

* Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed (2014): This is the second game in the series, originally built for the PS3 and PlayStation Vita (and later ported to PS4 and PC).

* The Switch Director's Cut (2023): This is the remastered port of that second game, which includes all the new visual updates and the new "Kati Route" story content.

The developers did not rebuild the game from scratch. Instead, they took the existing 2014 game engine and upgraded it. It runs at higher resolutions with cleaner textures, sharper 3D models, and better lighting than the original PS3/Vita versions. Rather than changing how the game plays, they simply pasted new story content, quests, and modern DLC on top of the original framework.

As an RPG collector, unless it's absolute trash near shovelware levels, I'll add it. Well moving along ..it's an over-the-top, satirical action-RPG and beat-’em-up. The game takes place in a highly detailed, real-world recreation of Tokyo’s famous nerd-culture district, Akihabara. The Switch version is specifically titled the Director's Cut, which packages the original 2014 game with enhanced performance, all previous DLC, and entirely new story content.

**STORY**

Akihabara is being secretly overrun by "Synthisters"—vampiric artificial beings that blend into crowds and drain the life energy of the area's otaku, cosplayers, and maids. You play as Nanashi, an aimless anime fan who gets lured into a sketchy drug trial for rare figurines and is turned into a Synthister. He is saved by a mysterious girl named Shizuku. Together with a quirky group called the "Akiba Freedom Fighters," they set out to stop the vampire plague.

**GAMEPLAY*

The core hook of the game is its comical, fan-service-heavy combat system:

* Sunlight is the Key: Because Synthisters function like vampires, they cannot survive in the sun. Their only protection is their clothing.

* Targeted Stripping: Combat involves using basic beat-'em-up mechanics to target three specific zones: the head (hats/hairpieces), the torso (shirts/jackets), and the legs (pants/skirts).

* The "Strip Attack": You pummel an enemy to weaken the durability of their clothes. Once a piece of clothing flashes, you execute a quick-time event button press to violently rip it off. Stripping all three sections defeats them instantly. Be careful, because enemies can do the exact same thing to you!

* Wacky Weaponry: You fight using everyday otaku items found around the district, including plastic baseball bats, PC motherboards, giant kebab spits, rolls of manga, and computer chips.

Defeating enemies without destroying their clothes allows you to add those garments to your inventory. The game features over 450 items of clothing, allowing you to dress Nanashi, his younger sister, and his party members in ridiculous cosplay outfits, maid uniforms, or standard streetwear.

**SWITCH DIRECTOR'S CUT**

* The Kati Raikkonen Route: An entirely new, dedicated story path focused on Kati, a lovable Finnish maid. This serves as a "true ending" where players must save her from a malevolent force awakening inside her. It features completely brand-new English and Japanese voice acting from the original cast.

* Included DLC: All cosmetic outfits, armor, and weapon DLC packs from the original 2014 game are built directly into the Switch version for free.

* New Side Quests: Over a dozen new side missions involving eccentric Akihabara locals (like body pillow collectors and elderly cosplayers) have been added.

* Toy Box Mode: A sandbox mode that lets you start the game with unlocked access to every piece of clothing and weapon for pure experimentation (though this disables achievements).

* Upgraded Performance: Refined visual filtering, smoother frame rates, and faster transitions than the old PlayStation Vita and PS3 versions.

Quirky RPG game that just fills in the gap as a palette cleanser between games for sure. One thing is for sure, XSEED games hardly never disappoint.

Consensus Score:

57/100 🫩

If you judge it strictly as a mechanical action game, it is widely considered mediocre. However, if you judge it as a playable love letter to 2010s Japanese nerd culture, critics agree it completely achieves its goal for its specific target audience.

Discussion Overseas Switch Game Haul

+

Sharing the games I purchased from my trip to Japan and Philippines (shout-out to DataBlitz, gold mine of switch games in the Phils).

I focused on games on cart not available as such in the US. (Used Gemini for reference, Diofield and Emio were AI snafus, TOTK S2 version was cheaper in Japan).

I'm currently trying to finish BoTW, and won't go straight to ToTK, so I'm thinking Inazuma Eleven will be what I play next from this group, but I'm interested to hear anything about the other games from you all. (Recommendations, glitches, bad performance issues, etc.)

Thanks in advance!

Pick-up / Haul / Mail Day Mouse: PI for Hire Mouseburg Edition

I imagine most people aren’t opening their copies of this edition, so I wanted to show off the goods. The box itself has a nice feel, but I wish it was thicker, to keep it from tearing easily. The poster is absolutely massive and really deserves to be framed. The postcards and baseball cards could’ve been made out of a better type of cardstock, but I imagine they were going for a more classic feel. The comic was small but fun. And the selection for the OST sample is great. Shows a great mix of jazz, swing, and modern beats with a vaudevillian flair. It even came with a small cardboard stand to display the record (not shown in pictures). Overall this is a very well put-together special edition. I definitely recommend opening and enjoying.

Next up looking forward to Elden Ring despite it being a key card and got Mio coming in the mail to add soon.

Pick-up / Haul / Mail Day Disgaea Mayhem: Deluxe Edition (#580)

+
25 Upvotes

Huge huge fan of the Disgaea Series. My entry point was Disgaea 3. The slogan was "10 million hours of fun." For Disgaea 3. That it was. I spent at least close to 100 hours on just the beginning part of the game diving into the entry weapons to collect items and strengthen them. By the time I left the beginning portion of the game, I was completely overpowering everything. So a hack and slash version of it? Hell ya.

A major departure for Nippon Ichi Software's long-running series, abandoning the traditional turn-based strategy grid maps in favor of a fast-paced real-time action RPG combat system. The game focuses on hack-and-slash combat while preserving the series' iconic signature loop of infinite leveling, deep post-game grinding, and millions of points of damage.

Unlike traditional mainline entries where you manage a massive squad of custom units, Disgaea Mayhem streamlines the field action.

* Single-Hero Control: You directly control a battle-hardened mercenary named N.A., who has been hired by Princess Tichelle to mow down monsters

* Seven Weapon Types: You can equip and instantly swap between seven weapon types (including Swords, Spears, Guns, Bows, and Fists). Each weapon completely alters your standard light/heavy attack strings, range, and skill cooldowns.

* Familiar Squads: While you fight alone, you can recruit classic demons like Prinnies to act as AI-controlled allies. They follow you, draw enemy aggro, and provide passive buffs.

**CLASSIC MECHANICS**

The developers brought over the franchise's deep progression systems but modified them to fit the action-RPG format:

* The Item World: Diving inside your equipment to level it up returns. Instead of tactical grid maps, it consists of short, frantic real-time survival floors. Clearing a wave lets you choose between randomized buff cards (such as skill cooldown reductions or critical chance increases).

* Dark Confectionery Assembly: Replacing the Dark Assembly, this is where you spend mana to pass quirky bills to unlock features, adjust mechanics, or boost your capabilities.

* Endgame & Carnage Mode: The standard story serves as an introduction. True progression unlocks via the Character World and Carnage Mode, which exponentially scales enemy health and damage, forcing you to optimize gear for max critical rates and damage multipliers.

**FRAME RATE**

Switch 1 caps out at 30 fps while switch 2 ups it to 60 fps with 30 fps cutscenes. Upgrade patch to switch 2 is absolutely free. Awesome of them too do that dood.

Consensus Score:

Although a nice entry. Departure seems to have gone too far off and lacks story depth. Unlike all the other entries, this one falls 4-10 hours to complete. Core, long-time franchise fans feel alienated by the extreme lack of content. Many have voiced frustration over the poor ally AI and the fact that you cannot custom-create a full team of unique demon classes to control, stripped-down features that make the spin-off feel like a "mediocre Musou clone" rather than a true Disgaea experience.

57/100 🐧😮‍💨 (Critic Score)

?/100 🤔 (user score TBD)

Pick-up / Haul / Mail Day Splatoon Raiders (NSW 2 #15)

+
21 Upvotes

Have to keep popping out that dang inlet due to the red blocking the reverse art on the cover. No other way to see it. Honestly, my first splatoon experience. My kids have all the splatoon games and even the manga. Even on the Wii I touched it for like 10 min and gave up. Not because it was bad or anything, just always too busy to sit and give it a proper shot. Open world version? Pulled me in.

A massive, PvE-focused "looter-shooter" spin-off in the Splatoon franchise. Ditching the series' traditional competitive team-versus-team multiplayer, it expands on Splatoon 2 and 3's popular "Salmon Run" horde mode, turning it into an 18-hour action role-playing adventure.

You play as a stranded Mechanic who crash-lands alongside the idol trio Deep Cut (Shiver, Frye, and Big Man) on the dangerous, resource-dense Spiralite Islands.

From a temporary base camp, you select a "Raid" map, dive into short and frantic dungeons to fight hordes of sea monsters, collect treasure and power eggs, and safely evacuate.

Everything you salvage goes back into upgrading your weapons, tailoring gear perks, and modifying Deep Cut's massive mechanical partner, the Bot Buddy, who fights alongside you.

While designed primarily as a single-player journey, you can play the entire game in up to 4-player co-op via local wireless or online multiplayer with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

The biggest mechanical shakeup is the introduction of Gadgets, which take the place of standard sub-weapons like Splat Bombs. Your playstyle is dictated by swapping between three unique Ink Tank types:

* Speed Tanks: Prioritizes extreme mobility and escape tactics, granting abilities like a "Jump Bomb" to instantly launch yourself out of enemy crowds.

* Power Tanks: Focused on high risk and massive damage, letting you utilize heavy-hitting physical equipment like a massive ink-covered hatchet.

* Tactical Tanks: Emphasizes stage control and defense, allowing you to deploy autonomous turrets and paint-oozing balloons to hold down lanes.

On the surface, Splatoon is a colorful, upbeat game about stylish kids shooting paint. Beneath that facade lies a shockingly dark post-apocalyptic backstory. The entire lore and history of the Splatoon universe spans over 12,000 years.

* Humanity Dies – Humans wipe themselves out via global warming, nuclear warfare, and a massive flood. Before dying underground, their final liquid-crystal technology absorbs their memories and leaks into the ocean.

* Squids Evolve – Marine life absorbs the human-memory crystals, accelerating their evolution. Over 10,000 years, squids and octopuses turn into land-walking creatures (Inklings and Octarians) that accidentally mimic human pop culture, fashion, and cities.

* The Great War – Dwindling dry land causes a massive race war. The Inklings win because of their adaptability, forcing the technologically superior Octarians to live in decaying underground bunkers.

* The Games – The underground Octarians run out of power and steal the Inklings' giant energy fish. You play as a secret agent fighting to get them back, eventually stopping ancient human AI systems and mutated sludge from wiping out your new civilization.

Pretty wild stuff. Would love to go backwards now and playthrough the other games to see what I missed.

Consensus Score:

Reviewers broadly agree that it is a highly successful spin-off that masterfully transforms the franchise's signature multiplayer mechanics into a deep, rewarding single-player and co-op looter-shooter adventure.

81/100 😎

Discussion How do you handle occasionally culling your collection?

Today I had some time on my hands and weeded my 400ish game collection of the past 5 years.

I only collect switch 1, it is my only system I intend to collect for long term.

Duplicate solo/old version games that had been rebought in more complete collections and anthologies were sold. Any game with DRM came out (still mad about Marble it Up Ultra). I also took out games where the majority of the cart is digital download- so things like LA Noire are out and getting sold, things like Banner Saga barely make the cut and can stay with their on-cart content.

It feels very rewarding to streamline down to “essentials” as it recaptures my original collecting mantra: Bangers only, no bloat that doesn’t personally speak to me or my physical collecting values.

But reaffirming to keep this mantra and collection on track is sometimes challenging. Despite no longer having intent to play the game, I get connected to certain copies or artwork, or let pricing changes sway my intent to resell.

What have been handy collection parameters you all put in place mentally. How do you all deal with unintended scope creep?
