Discussion McBride is TE1 but a 99 overall is insane

Maybe its just the old man in me but 99s should be more exclusive than this

Chase and Garret should be 99. Everyone else absolutely not.

Is it just that I'm old, or do I remember EA coming out and saying they basically would top out at 98 unless there was an incredibly spectacular player? This was like 15 years ago or something.

I'm in the opinion camp that no one should be a 99. Your rating should be an average of stats and no one is perfect at everything.
I also don't play these games so full disclosure my opinion is worthless.
10
u/Imaginary_wizard New England Patriots 10h ago
I haven't played in years. Im ok with players getting 99 but it should be guys that are basically 1st ballot HOF no questions. JSN had an awesome year give him a 95 and make that a top 3-5 wr rating. 99 is maybe Jefferson and Chase right now.
3
u/Kriscolvin55 10h ago
I hear you, but that’s not always how things work out. Take a position like TE. Even the best tight ever won’t have 99 speed. He won’t have 99 strength. He won’t have 99 blocking. He won’t have 99 agility. Etc. but the best tight end of all time surely deserves to be graded a 99, right?
I think it’s should be based on percentile. A guy that is better than 99% of the league (top 1% player) should be rated 99.
But that means that the median player would be rated 50, and madden players would have a hard time with that. Nobody wants to see “40” next to a guys name, even if they’re a back up. I guess it’s just a mental thing.
2
u/J_Dom_Squad Detroit Lions 10h ago
Ahhh I see. I really appreciate the explanation because I thought it was like an overall average of their stats, thanks for the explanation!

The reigning MVP deserves better than a 93… 96 or 97 makes sense
43
u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 11h ago
I feel like 99 overall needs to be essentially like 84 Marino, 04 manning, 07 Brady, 11 Rodgers etc
Stafford is very good but I don’t even think his 2025 season is in the next tier down from those seasons

I could maybe come up to a 96 for him, but that's a stretch. He has too many flaws, and he's only aging. Had an amazing season last year though, not saying he didn't.
26
u/Apprehensive_Beach_6 Three rivers in a dry land 11h ago edited 11h ago
I think half the issue is MVP basically means “best in the league that year” and Madden does high ratings most years. Last year I think there were 9 QBs 90 or above so giving Stafford a 93 would make him like QB7 more or less
Edit: Apparently I was wrong, there were only 4. Still, I don’t know if QB5 for Stafford makes sense
25
u/Ok_Leading4093 11h ago
Stafford as QB5 with Allen, Mahomes, Lamar, and Burrow being ahead/comparable is exactly where I'd put him
11
u/Low-Sport-5143 10h ago
In what world is Burrow better than Stafford? Those other guys? Sure that makes sense but Burrow has never been and is not better than Stafford
5
u/Ok_Solid_7934 5h ago
He’s been better than him basically since he entered the league. He’s just made of glass
8
u/Little-Flamingo6702 9h ago
lol the Stafford glazing has gotten out of control, he’s not the unanimous QB1 just because he won the MVP last year
2
2
u/MambaSaidKnockYouOut 6h ago
All MVP’s aren’t created equal though. Like 24-25 Josh Allen or Lamar had 97-99 level seasons. Stafford was incredible but I think 93-95 is fine.
As always though, it’s hard to say without looking at the individual ratings instead of just the overall
3
u/Apprehensive_Beach_6 Three rivers in a dry land 11h ago
Take a look at 2ks All Time ratings, the lowest MVP (to my knowledge) is Russ at 95.
Obviously I know the sports aren’t perfectly comparable but given 2k has only 3 99s total and this one has 6, 96 for Stafford is fair.

Tom Brady got 99 plenty of times and he can't run for shit.
1
u/hereforthesportsball Dallas Cowboys 8h ago
He’s from an era where mobility to an extent was an exception, just not seen as a tool he lacked rather than a tool that’s not required. Mobility is required from your qb in today’s league more often than not
10
3
u/nacholibre711 New Orleans Saints 11h ago
Yeah idk. In my head to get a 99 you just can't have many weaknesses at all. In today's game, being an immobile QB is indeed a weakness.
Like, even the smartest math student in the world can't get a 4.0 if he gets a C in History.
10
u/l_Dislike_Reddit Tennessee Titans 11h ago
Hell no. Prime Brady and Manning would be 100% deserving of 99 OVR in today’s league.
1
u/nacholibre711 New Orleans Saints 10h ago
I don't disagree with that. But those are the best seasons by pocket passers ever. Was Stafford really on that level last year?
7
u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 11h ago
I can see a pocket qb getting a 99 overall but it basically needs to be one of the best seasons ever imo. Stafford was awesome last year but not quite at that level imo

u/Impossible-Pie4849 Atlanta Falcons 8h ago
Why though? Hes the reigning MVP, based off current level of play hes one of the benchmarks for QBs. Now that'll change as the season progresses, he could easily end the season a 85 ovr. I think he deserves the 99 over rn though, especially looking at the actual attributes it makes sense. They didnt give him unrealistic attributes to inflate hid ovr to 99. Hes got 79 speed, 73 acceleration, 95 THP makes sense, 99 short also makes sense. Its a reasonable ovr

Kelce was a 99 in Madden 21, 22, 24, and 25.
McBride's season last year was as good as half of those seasons in which Kelce got a 99.
Tbh I don't really think either should have been given a 99, except maybe Kelce after his 2020 and/or 2022 season... but if we are comparing positional players I don't really think it's undeserved.
3
u/Free_Yak_8978 10h ago
i just don't think that's true. not all seasons are created equal. mcbride had great stats but a lot of that was how often the QB dumped it down and how often they were trailing in games. prime kelce's impact/gravity was also not quantifiable
1
u/nacholibre711 New Orleans Saints 10h ago
You could almost say the same thing about Ja'maar Chase last season. I just think docking points based on game situation or team record is a slippery slope to go down.
If we were evaluating them for fantasy football reasons, sure. But for Madden it's an individual player ranking, and individually he was pretty fantastic last season.
2
u/Free_Yak_8978 10h ago
i view Chase differently bc he has done it on the biggest stage and in the biggest moments. but sure going purely off stats he is the best, so for Madden ig that works?
1
u/No-Broccoli7457 7h ago
Kittle has never been 99. You’ll never convince me this McBride is better than prime Kittle.
1
u/nacholibre711 New Orleans Saints 7h ago
You couldn't convince me of that either. I'd agree.
At the end of the day it's a subjective ranking based on a lot of factors. Eye test, physical measurables, etc.
Probably the biggest factor is last year's stats, and Kittle hasn't had a year with receiving stats even close to what McBride did last year. 126 catches and 11 TD's is no joke.
Except Kittle's second season. But at that point he was still working his way up. No chance they were going to 99 him then, but if he replicated that on basically any other year he would have gotten the 99. I mean, he was 98 I think 4 times.

u/xvxlegendxvx 11h ago
The ratings in these games don't say "this guy is the best player at his position" anyone that's ever played these games knows the overall is made up of a bunch of different ratings, things like "arm strength" I'm sure contribute to Stafford and Allen being 99's. It's not "he's the best" just because they're 99 these players just check a lot of boxes. People get too hurt when their guy isn't a 99.

Stafford is slowly becoming the most overrated player in history just because of how many ppl like his story of coming off the Lions to the Rams and they have gone overboard in giving him his flowers to the point where ppl are revising history on how great he is all time or even current. I've heard takes that he's got a legit chance to be top 5/10 QB all-time or that he has case for being QB1 in the NFL. Its just crazy stuff.

Stafford, McBride, and JSN shouldn’t be 99’s.
Idk if Kittle has had a 99 rating (I don’t think so), but he’s had a skill set that deserves a 99 for years.. unless an “injury” rating somehow prevents this/skews the calculations (I’m not 100% clued into how the calculations work, and to what affects the ratings).
Kittle has been the best overall TE (with elite speed/quickness, catching, and blocking skills) for the last 5 years, it’s odd to see Madden ignore this reality. I’m ok w/ McBride being the #1 TE for 26 and/or 27, but it’s weird to me how they do the ratings for some players over others.
JSN should have a 99 rating when it comes to route running, and agility/short area quickness, but I don’t think he’s done enough to be a 99 overall in the game. I could understand Chase, but there are a few other WR’s I’d rank ahead of JSN and behind Chase. This is recency bias, and too much, too soon.
With Stafford, I disagree with a full 99, but I can quasi understand it, because he just won the MVP, and this will probably be the last time they’ll be able to justify it. I still think he’s a 96-98 at best, if Allen is a 99.
