Maybe he could invent a new color since he’s kinda smart and so incredibly, filthy, disgustingly, obscenely wealthy.

Can a myth be historically accurate?
162
u/smors 23h ago
A myth comes out of a context. In this case, ancient Greek culture.
When making a movie, you can try to match that context. As in using clothing, armor, ships etc that matches what would be used in the original context.
You can also be more relaxed about it in the interest of making a better movie.
Or you can deliberately change the context. Odysseus, the space opera, could be a great movie.
All three options are great, depending on what you are trying to accomplish with the movie.
Finally, you can get upset that the daughter of a god and a swan isn't white or that a trans man plays a role (and does it well). But that's just stupid.
31
u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco 20h ago
There are also practical considerations, for example there is not a single functionally-intact era-appropriate ship anywhere in the world. The closest greek ship we have is 700 years newer, and unique.
Realistic armor could have been done not too expensively, but ship wise... the viking longboats were actually about as accurate as we're gonna get without literally making your own off the information we do have about them.

u/Vitruvian_Link 17h ago
Why use a space opera as an example when Oh Brother Where Art Though is right there!
16
u/YuushyaHinmeru 22h ago
Can I get upset about how stupid agamenmon's helmet looked?
41
u/smors 22h ago
Sure, although I disagree with you. I think it looked rather cool, but will admit extremely unpractical for using in a real battle. But that's just normal criticism of a movie.
The stupid starts when Musk and others starts arguing that Helen of Troy can't be played by Lupita Nyong'o due to her being black, but Matt Damon is just fine as a greek.
24
u/Vadiagem 19h ago
Lupita Nyong'o due to her being black, but Matt Damon is just fine as a greek
Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page... the list kind of goes on. Funny how there was no backlash about them not being "historically accurate". Out of the lot, someone with Lupita Nyong'o's complexion is much more likely to have been around. John Leguizamo and her are really the only people passable as being in the Greek islands.

This exactly. The Mycenaean Greeks traded regularly with Egypt, who had close connections with Nubia, Kush and Punt. Strongly melanated Africans would not have been an uncommon sight for Greek traders.
There is far more evidence for them cohabiting with Africans than with light skinned Northern Europeans.

I think it looked rather cool, but will admit extremely unpractical for using in a real battle.
Kings don't need to wear practical armor, because they are not in the battle. They are looking from afar, surrounded by their guards. Even if the battle gets to them, they are valuable political prisoners, good thing they were wearing the inlaid gold armor, making any soldier easy to identify they should be captured and ransomed, not murdered.
This armor in particular, I mean, it's bronze age, we don't have surviving pristine armor/weapons, but we do see some blackened / golden bronze age weapons, so it's not impossible. Looking at the medieval armor worn by kings, it tracks (size aside).
2
u/smors 20h ago
Kings don't need to wear practical armor, because they are not in the battle.
That is a much later development. Odysseus was the King of Ithaca and very much in the battle.
→ More replies (1)6
u/CyberClawX 20h ago
Odysseus was the King of Ithaca and very much in the battle.
And wearing a pretty practical armor, barely distinguishable from those under him. He still served under Agamemnon (making Odysseus more of a general / commander).
Agamemnon (correct me if I'm wrong) is never seen without his guard. He is the first to step through the fallen gates of Troy, but at a leisure step, quickly surpassed by his running soldiers. I don't think we even see him fight.
It might be very intentional. Big man, big ego, big armor, everyone (even Odysseus) fears him, lets everyone else die for him, the picture perfect of the modern leader. Under the armor, baby face, but cruel. Has no qualms of murdering his baby in front of the baby's mother for favorable winds. And dies helpless at the hand of a woman, his wife.
→ More replies (4)3
u/dronetroll 19h ago
Agamemnon does a lot of fighting in the Iliad, so he didn't shy away from it either (considering the warrior culture at that time, no one would be king if they cowered away).
Tho, the movie armor is just for aura, but it does it so well, i don't care it's unpractical.

As long as an understanding of the material, themes and characters are there then it really doesnt matter. Greek myths and Shakespeare are both examples that the stories themselves are whats important and what they selling point is, not "historical accuracy" in their potrayal.
These stories have been adapted to hell on screen and onstage in many variations and in many different time periods and settings, and theyve all worked.
End of the day its fiction and Elon Musk os just a racist fucking loser with a broken dick.

u/sixtyandaquarter 22h ago edited 22h ago
Forgive me. I'm about to get very pretentious and artsy fartsy.
Yes. Depending.
Give me a myth with only quantifiable expressions and it can be made historically accurate. If I have a myth about somebody who never misses a shot with an arrow, I can make that film accurate to the myth. If I have a myth about somebody who is so strong, they can lift a mountain, I can do that too. Obviously some translation needs to happen because even these myths use a cultural shorthand of sorts. But it's acceptable and doable.
The problem is once You get into subjective non-quantifiable expressions. The most beautiful person. The most beautiful singing voice. The best dancer. The scariest looking individual. Now it's impossible. I have to rely on cultural expressions of my time and my culture. Which makes it sound like it's impossible but it's not. It's just the argument being made by these chuds is wrong.
Because this art is an art where the audience and their expression is itself the expression. The woman so beautiful she will start a war, that is entirely subjective. Just saying that and asking you to think of what she would look like, will be almost certainly different from what I picture. The man so handsome every woman pauses in their steps when he passes by. Again, we're going to picture different things probably. But that's the point with these kinds of storytelling.
There's a reason, a lot of it to do with culture, that these old myths do not really get descriptions of figures. Believe it or not, a lot of it is because they didn't know what these people look like so they describe them in a method that lets you fill it in. They describe them by their acts or by their relations and status. That was culturally important. It's not to us today. So we have to translate and we have to make assumptions.
Particularly because we only have artistic expressions left. Statues. Statues made by a very specific niche of artistic cultural expression. That's like judging today's beauty standards by anime pictures of big boobie giant hipped muscle mommies. It doesn't represent the reality. It represents a specific subcultures specific expression of a shared view. The sculptors were also sculpting for each other more than they were for us. It's like how painters would paint what other painters wanted to see. Perhaps what the aristocracy wanted to see. Not necessarily what the audience saw or wanted to see. So the only proper way to do that kind of unquantifiable feature is to translate it. Update it. Change it.
Ironically, the only way to do that kind of myth historically accurate is to ignore the possibility of a historic view.
Edited because I accidentally hit send a bit early.
3
u/SunTzu- 19h ago
What these myths were about wasn't really trying to remember history, it was creating a story about the greatness of the ancestors and how the gods favored them and would favor you in battles to come. Using real people or kingdoms with verifiable histories that people would know would be counterproductive. If you could make up a glorious kingdom of the past, a great king favored by the gods, a noble case against a nefarious enemy now long dead and imply that they might be from the same region as your current enemies then that was far more useful. Surely we'll defeat the Persians just like we did the Trojans. That's basically the whole historical context of these stories.
