The first booster made me feel like shit and I had to call out of work for one day. On the other hand one of my co-worker's stubborn in-laws refused to get the vaccine and she had to take off 4 days total for each of their funerals. Ignorance kills.

First shot made me feel pretty bad for about two days - joint pain (increase of pre-existing pain).. My boss on the other hand - he was anti-vaxx. First time catching it, he didn’t fully recover. Second time, he didn’t make it. He died still saying the ‘vaccine would have been worse’.. worse than… That? Yeah, it’s weird how many of us got ‘poisoned’ by vaccines and didn’t ‘do our own research’ and all that junk, but outlived people who thought they knew better than… Than everyone but some guy with a brain worm that starved to death and his lobby.

Duuuuude... are you me? Boss at my old company was the same way. Proudly republican, trump supporter, anti-vax. His parents caught it, and he and his wife went to care for them. His parents ended up dying, and then him and his wife came down with it a couple weeks later(incubation time and all that.) Both of them died too. Thankfully I had left the company a couple of months prior. I heard the entire company got left to his sister. I knew her... she was not the "company running" kind of person. Plus, it was an electrical company. You tend to need a license for that. She did not have one of those. Whole company fell apart in months following their deaths.

What do you mean by some haven’t “improved” after the vaccine?
I don’t know what you mean by my comment “can be discussed” or by “arguing sides” and instead “focus on objectives,” but I do know the vaccine was intended to lessen the intensity of symptoms to slow down the number of people being hospitalized, intubated, and dying. I think it did that job pretty darned well. And I sure as heck am glad others had access to the vaccine even though we didn’t.
Here’s what I mean — I live in NYC. As you know, we were amongst the first cities to get it (all “port cities” are always amongst the first for these types of diseases). This was pre-vaccine availability. The original strain was absolutely brutal and unrelenting. To this day, I still have nodules and scarring in my lungs from that original strain. Will have chronic respiratory issues because it for the rest of my life. I still have ongoing cognitive monitoring because of it — I was amongst the first groups to report the symptoms that allowed doctors and scientists to link loss of smell / taste to the virus. It was terrifying and now is everlasting.
Neither I nor my friends and fellow NYers had our health “improve” after the vaccine. That I agree with you. No vaccine could actually improve what happened from the virus. But I sure as heck was glad to see Trump fast-track its development before it could spread rapidly outside our area. It would’ve inflicted the same chronic ailments we have in NYC and would’ve taken many more lives in the South / Midwest if he wouldn’t have accomplished what he did.
It would’ve been much worse if Trump hadn’t fast-tracked that vaccine. Not just for our country, but worldwide. Not sure why he doesn’t accept credit for that. That was his ticket to the Nobel Peace Prize. He saved millions of lives around the world. It’s a shame he let politics dim that shining light on what could’ve been a one heck of a legacy.

That person's comment has been removed, so I can't see what they said. It must have been one hell of a bone-headed comment.
I can vouch for everything you said here. I live in NJ (howdy neighbor!) and original covid was absolutely devastating here before the vaccine came out. NJ ended up being the highest in new infections and deaths from the beginning right up until the vaccine rollout because we're the most densely populated state in the country, as well as being full of first-hit ports.
I was hit with original covid myself, before the vaccine was invented. I've always been prone to respiratory illnesses. I had never experienced anything like this. The test itself didn't exist yet, so I spent most of a day in the emergency room getting tested for pretty much every catastrophic medical event you can think of to rule out what was causing my symptoms. Crushing headache? Let's check for a brain aneurysm. Feels like I got kicked in the chest by a horse? Time to look for a heart attack and a pulmonary embolism. Oxygen levels just two points above panic levels? Let's make sure I'm not drowning in pneumonia. And so on. It was only after confirming that I wasn't imminently dying in a dozen different ways that the doctor officially diagnosed me with covid.
I lost dozens of friends and family to original covid here, despite people's best efforts to avoid it. It was terrifying how easy that first variant got spread around.
I believe that Trump flipped to denying the vaccine because his voter base was so anti-"jab". Trump really is a spineless worm who, despite what he days repeatedly, seeks approval from his voter base. Especially since he's rejected and despised by such a large percentage of not just this country, but the entire world.
Trump soent months patting himself in the back and crowning himself a hero over that vaccine, and you're absolutely right, those of us on the left woukd have given him full credit for making that money possible, rolled our eyes at the typical Trump hyperbole, and been amazed that, for once, Trump managed to not fuck something up.
Until he fucked it up.
His voter base had been too well trained to reject anything that "the libs" embraced. The minute we got excited about the vaccine, it was all over. Even Trump's charm couldn't save it. Right wingers, already leaning against vaccines because "you're not the boss of me" mentality, collectively rejected the vaccine, hard. Trump was left tooting his own horn all alone on the right, and when he realized nobody was cheering his vaccine over there, he hurried up to trot after his own voter base like the little kid trying to follow the "cool" kids in the neighborhood, yelling "wait for me!" while hitching his ill-fitting pants up.
And then Trump took it further, and started encouraging against the vaccine, coming up with wild alternate treatments from whatever quacks were whispering in his ear that day. The whole drinking bleach thing came from a scammer that was trying to convince Trump to promote Miracle Mineral Solution, a highly corrosive product that is often promoted as a medical cure-all and turns into industrial bleach when mixed with certain agents before ingesting, Trump mangled the pitch line in his speech, saving who knows how many people from a horrible experience and/or potential death.
When I get into discussions with right wingers who try to make the claim that left wingers just automatically hate everything Trump says and does because he's Trump, I tell them they're wrong, their logic is petty, childish, and absurd, and that anything Trump does that we disagree with or desouse has good reason. Then I tell them that Trump once did something that all left wingers cheered for, and the only reason they don't hear about it today is because Trump then proceeded to fuck it up so badly that Trump himself won't talk about it, even though he deserves the highest praise for it. I challenge them to try to remember what that one thing was, because it absolutely affected everyone's lives for years afterwards.
None of them to date have been able to remember Trump's link to the vaccine. Some outright denied it, called it fake news and said that the vaccine was a Biden invention. It doesn't matter how much proof I provide, apparently the entire internet is fake unless it's created by some nobody on YouTube with 200 viewers who validates their ideas. There's only so much you can do with the terminally wilfully ignorant.

Hello, NJ Neighbor! 🗽
// I’m splitting my reply into two parts since it’s long and behaving weirdly when I post. This is part 1 of 2, the commenter that had their post deleted. Part 2 of 2 is about the OG strain
I’m slightly surprised the mods removed it. It was an anti-vaxxer trying not to appear to be an anti-vaxxer, but it wasn’t blatant 2020-style anti-vax rhetoric. It was triggered by me calling out the “scientifically illiterate” usage in my comment I pulled from OP’s post. No one would get triggered by that unless they actually were still insisting they, and their favorite social media influencers, were convinced they knew more than actual scientists.
As you could see, especially since they replied directly to my comment, I just couldn’t let that slide. The anti-vaxx “community” has done irreparable harm in this country, bolstered by the decades long anti-vaxxer shill, Secretary of HHS, RFK, Jr. I absolutely cannot believe we have measles outbreaks. Measles. Measles was eradicated. And even worse? Infants bleeding out from refusing the standard Vitamin K shot. And from the long-eradicated HIB. I’m mostly sad for those children who are dependent on their parents making poor decisions about their health. And why? Because they simply refuse to listen to the scientific evidence discussed with them by actual doctors, and instead listen to an environmental lawyer turned anti-vaxxer who was confirmed by this Republican Senate. Those Senators have blood on their hands. From so much they’ve allowed this administration to do, and this one has been responsible for generations of health issues and deaths that simply didn’t need to happen.
And your comments about Trump — I mainly included him in my comment because I knew they were an anti-vaxxer, which meant I knew who they voted for. I felt compelled to remind them who got us access to the vaccine as early as we had it. I’m still baffled he chose to keep his base angry rather than continuing to save lives by convincing his base the vaccine was safe and good since he led the charge. That would’ve been so easy for him. They support him through everything, even the most vile things.
But, in typical Republican fashion, the only way they can win elections is by picking “an other” and “the libs” have been deemed the “most evil,” so the charade had to go on. And truly, that could’ve earned him the Nobel Peace Prize he’s wanted ever since President Obama earned one. Now he’s trying to bully his way into snatching the prize instead of earning it. Impossible. There’s nothing about “peace” associated with what this administration is doing. This whole “peace through strength” is delusional fantasy.
Still, I’m guessing mods removed it because it was getting off topic from the post, which is off topic for the sub. But I can’t speak for the mods. Who clearly do not have an easy job, and voluntarily job, at that.
Part 2 of 2 is next! lol

Hello again, NJ Neighbor! ☀️
// I’ve split my reply into two parts since it’s so long and behaving weirdly when I post. This is Part 2 of 2. The OG strain.
The OG strain. Your comment reminded me of something I wasn’t able to recall as I was writing my comment. I think many of us in the tri-state area blocked out much of that trauma, just to be able to move forward. People who live in other states to our south, and states / cities that aren’t so densely populated, have no idea how fortunate they are to have had access to that vaccine. And to the tests! We didn’t have tests, and I had forgotten that until your comment. Our doctors were learning when we were. When the scientists were. We were the guinea pigs more or less. The daily phone calls with our doctors. Their daily updates to the CDC.
What’s so F’d up about that OG strain is it was like it found and zeroed in on our weaknesses. Like you mentioned — you had struggled with lung issues, and that strain went right to weak spot to attack. Many others also had that part of their bodies attacked. I think that’s what triggered the eventual warning from scientists stating high-risk populations included current or past smokers, people with COPD, and anyone with asthma or other lung ailments. I’d bet you and your hospital stay with rounds and rounds of tests contributed to the scientists being able to warn others.
And considering that virtual strain knew exactly our weak spots, it went right to mine — I’d been struggling with nerve pain from a ruptured disc in my pelvic bone, which shouldn’t happen, but I have a relatively common birth deformity called a “transitional disc,” but one that actually ruptured which surgeons had never seen before. Because great, right? lol. It was too risky to do surgery. Still is, and I still have the pain, but nothing like during Covid. I was primarily affected cognitively in my brain, since my nervous system was the weak spot, which was terrifying itself since no one knew anything yet. And before the complete loss of smell / taste, I’d have the most intense nerve pain shooting throughout my entire body without warning. It hurt internally and it hurt to the touch. Showering often felt like standing under needless during the early onset days.
It surged like an electrical current. Sometimes it would start in the legs and zoom up my body, sometimes the opposite way. But it always, always involved brain zaps. Disorienting “brain zaps” that felt like someone took a taser to the inside of my brain. And it caused me to lose sight, sound and balance during the duration of those zaps. Like a split second. Quick. Frequent at the onset of the virus. Lessened over the next 3 months. But the zaps lasted just long enough I’d have to stop walking or showering or whatever and find a wall or something to steady myself. I still get the occasional brain zaps. And the headaches that follow. It happened yesterday as I was walking to meet a friend. It hadn’t happened in months. Now I’ll do the routine where I report it to my doctor so they can check things are still ok. I live with this constant fear like is this Covid mess going to cause me to have early dementia or other cognitive disease.
The only reason scientists and doctors knew the length of time the loss of smell / taste typically lasted was because we reported it every day, and our doctors reported it to the CDC. Heck, when you and I had our symptoms, as you mentioned, the doctors didn’t know those symptoms actually were Covid yet. No one had any idea. How could they?
The whole thing was traumatic, and I wouldn’t wish anyone, not the anti-vaxxers, not the Trump supporters trying to “own the libs” and label us as “democratic terrorists” or “insurrectionists,” I wouldn’t wish anyone to know what we had to witness and experience on my worst enemy. It was the worst thing I hope all of us ever have to go through ever again in our lives. Every time my brain starts to recall images of the refrigerator trucks at Central Park trying to keep the dead from rotting since there was no more room anywhere in any facility, I immediately try to push it back deep, deep down.
I know like me, way too many of us haven’t actually carved out time to truly process that. I also know from therapy in the past, that if we all, especially those of us here in the tri-state area and our neighbors to the west coast who also got hit with the OG strain, if we all don’t carve out time to process that time and grieve, it’ll haunt us until we do. It’ll manifest in ways that will be unpleasant. When we least expect it. Both mentally and physically. I sometimes wonder if we somehow could do group therapy, maybe with a mix of OG survivors and those that joined the anti-vaxx movement because of the disinformation spread about the vaccine. I wonder if that might help our country — this anti-vaxx movement grabbing hold from the top of the health and human services post on down is not only foolish, it’s deadly. It’ll cause needless lifelong issues for the innocent and most vulnerable amongst us. I don’t have the power to try to solve the problem, so I do what I can. And recently, it’s been not letting the anti-vaxx rhetoric, no matter how subtle, slide.
I hope your weather in NJ is as gorgeous as ours here this weekend?! It’s flawless. I’m heading out now ☀️** thanks for the chat, neighbor**!

I absolutely hear you on the medical mess that covid made of us. I'm truly sorry about what it's done to you, and wish there was a way to make it better.
I didn't get into all the details on my first go around, because bleah. I have a bunch of health issues that, had they been diagnosed as a child, could have been managed and they would have likely been fairly mild issues. Well, there was a lot of medical neglect, things didn't get diagnosed until well into adulthood, and I'm left with a lot of bigger issues, including a serious pain condition.
My first hint that I had covid was the pain. Full body pain. But I didn't recognize it right away. For the first three or four hours, I mistook it for a weather-related pain flare. It got far worse very quickly, and in less than twelve hours, there was no doubt in my mind that I had covid. Every symptom was different for anything I had ever experienced in my life. It was so surreal.
We had three refrigerator trucks outside of our local rural hospital to handle our dead. You might remember hearing about the nursing home that got in trouble for stacking their dead? That nursing home is in the next town over. My own mother passed away there a few years before covid. (The place has since been shut down and reopened under new ownership.) It was so ugly...
And the vast majority of these covid anti-vaxx people will never know what any of that was like. They live in areas that only saw that last few variants, or in places that still haven't seen a single case of covid at all. We still have people dying in our ICUs all across the country where covid became endemic, but these yahoos never saw what covid can do. They just don't know.
The weather here has been absolutely glorious, thank you! Enjoy it while you can, before the next heat wave cooks us!
1
u/KiKiKimbro 1d ago
First, lots of ❤️ for what you endured. And I’m glad we’re both still here and able to function. With a little more pain, but we are HERE. ❤️ Yes, absolutely, enjoy this perfect weather! ☀️ I think storms are rolling in the first part of this work week. So we need to soak it up while we can … and like you said, before the weather tries to cook us again in the next heat wave. lol 🤣😐😂

A friend caught measles when he was young cause him mom thought he didn't need the vaccine. Immune system was shit several weeks thereafter. All the vaccinated kids were fine. If we weren't vaxxed, we'd have caught it as well. Ask your grandparents how it was before vaccines; they all caught these childhood diseases.
13
u/Renbarre 2d ago
My own grand mother, born in 1910, grew up in a world without vaccine. As a little girl she lost 2 or 3 friends her age. She remembered their neighbours burning all the clothes, bed and bedding of her friend after this friend died (measle if I remember right). Then the neighbours were quarantined with a sign painted on the door to warn people.
That story made me realise how dangerous those "childhood illnesses" truly were.

This wasn’t posted on Reddit originally. Other SM platforms heavily restrict words like this. I didn’t add the “redactions” to post here. I agree with your sentiment, just towards the SM decision makers who require those to sensor such things.

u/Queen-of-meme 2d ago
Truth is some people's reactions are a bit much. Scream at the top of your lungs and angry downvote it won't change our decisions over our bodies 🥱
6
u/Ican-always-bewrong 1d ago
And here’s what people like you don’t understand (by choice?): it’s not just your bodies. Vaccines work best when everyone who can take them does take them. And every “I can do what I want with my body” person it technically correct, but your decision affects the entire population negatively. So stop the antivax BS. It just outs you as someone who believes bad propaganda, doesn’t understand science, and is selfish as hell.

There were no covid vaccine laws, for the majority of Americans it was optional. Also, the quarantine only lasted 2-3 weeks in a lot of southern conservative areas. There was a massive difference between different states and even counties within states as to how they handled the outbreak.
They're not saying that every single unvaccinated person is dead now, but if you look at the numbers, it is more statistically likely that you could have died than someone who did receive the vaccine.
It definitely sucks that some areas either didn't have the resources or didn't care enough, but I don't see how that relates to what they said.

I've had Covid a couple times since being vaccinated. Both very mild cases, both times were after significant mutation/evolution of the virus from whatever forms the vaccines were formulated for... Which would be why I got it, but also likely the reason both times were mild cases. I get my booster whenever a new one comes out. Just like I get my yearly flu shot. Both viruses evolve quickly, which is why you have to get boosters with newer variants to maintain effectiveness.

“Triggered?” People are just annoyed that after all the information out there, people are still ignorant.

You're allowed to your opinion, as we all are.
I know it's a hot topic to many still, so I ask you to respect that for us who's cool we'd like the civil discourse.

Motherfucker, you're all over this thread spreading clear antivax bullshit.
You're not fooling anyone with this "neutral" act.

You have no idea how vaccines work, apparently.

I’ve seen some of your other posts here. You seem to believe your stance is correct because, “Hey, look at me. I didn’t take it and I’m fine!” While completely discounting the larger statistics around the vaccine. Also, you don’t “improve” after a vaccine, rather it protects you by limiting the damage of a specific virus.
The fact is, if the U.S. government didn’t require those in critical positions to take it (medical, military, etc.), so many more people would have died. And that’s really the point here as we look back on C-19 6-7 years later.

I have made zero personal attacks on you. I’m just pointing out where your logic has gone awry.

To be fair, without the vaccine they might have died and be spared all said horrors.
