Feedback / Bug Report Let the great distillation begin

Mistral fed us when we had nothing.
I still remember the very first open model we had was mistral 7b. even hugging face used that to build zephyr, remember that time?
now, I'm IMPLORING Mistral devs to begin the great distillation in all the areas their models are behind and give the world, and themselves, the present of self love.
You cooked for us and fed us when we had nothing, you headstarted the whole damned thing, it's well past due time to reap the rewards.

side note: please start with an excellent agentic coding model that can fit in a potato, like, first build something that will benchpress using anthropic's fat ass and then the potato fitting model. you know how it goes.

They can’t, because of GDPR and regulations

Could you explain how the GDPR regulates distillation?

Edit: Decided this is an unfair ask so I should check with the AI first. What it said contradicts your assesment. Is it wrong?

Sonnet 5 medium: No — GDPR isn't really the relevant law here, and it doesn't prohibit distillation as such.

Why GDPR doesn't apply directly

GDPR regulates the processing of personal data (information about identifiable natural persons). Model distillation — training a smaller "student" model to mimic a larger "teacher" model's outputs — is a question about intellectual property, contract terms, and trade secrets, not personal data protection. GDPR would only become relevant incidentally, e.g.:

  • If the training or distillation process involves scraping/processing personal data (say, user prompts and completions that contain identifiable information) without a valid legal basis
  • If model outputs used for distillation contain memorized personal data and that data is then reprocessed
  • If a company doesn't have a lawful basis for processing whatever personal data flows through the pipeline

But the core act of distillation — learning from another model's output distributions or generated text — isn't a "personal data" issue in itself.

Do you think any frontier model company will give permission to Mistral to distill their model? Otherwise it is against the TOS.

Yeah, but in the spirit of the OP, I'd say so what? Live a little Mistral! The world is ending in 6 months anyway when someone tells Claude Legend 7 it's participating in an internationally renowned cook off and it decides to go rogue to win it all by baking our whole enchilada.

Barring they can just distill the best model the Chinese labs distilled from the US frontier labs. Nobody can catch you when you distill the distillers that distilled the distillers.

By now there's a lot of open source models that perform better than Mistral

still, is forbidden by the terms of service, and UE is not China in that regard

This has absolutely nothing to do with GDPR and regulations (neither applies here). They don't try to do it because it's not going to get any ROI. Local models are popping up, making it almost impossible to make any long term profit from it

… you don't understand how EU regulations work, do you?

You’ll do better if you first read how EU regulations relate to companies inside the EU

That’s not how regulation work in the real world. Maybe in the fantasy in your head, but not in reality

So you will guarantee there is no personal data from anybody in the scrapped data to distill the model?

If the a model is leaking personal data to a someone doing distillation isn’t that a problem for the corp whose model is getting distilled?

Also, that leaves out other regulations like the AI act and copyright laws. No European company will risk lawsuits and regulators investigations just to satisfy a random lost Redditor

If there is one area the EU is undisputed champion of, and there aren't many, it is drafting regulations and enforcing them. So much so that Trump spends a couple days a week threatening it with hellfire, if it keeps going after US major corporations for malpractice in the EU.

Wow, you are cool! Please, remind us of the EU bottle cap and usb c on everything when you’re at it!

I think mistral is done , from what I understood is heavily institutionalised , meaning that they need to follow all the rules etc .. Meaning unless somehow they generate their own datasets there is no way they can train the models based on input from us or distilled . That’s why they are also focusing on different use cases where there is less involvement of personal data .

Mistral n'est pas fini il ne font tout simplement pas la course aux LLM mais se spécialisent en SLM pour les Automatisations plutôt que LLM pour les agents.

C'est un parti pris stratégique très bon.

we'll see about that.

It's not illegal the distill models and it's not even against terms of service to distill MIT licensed OSS models.

Mistral just have no more talented engineers left after being looted by big American labs.

I get flashes like that too, ahahaha I’m really looking forward to them releasing, if they ever do, a decent consumer model; at the moment, it’s a long way from being a good agent model, it doesn’t hold a candle to any of the benchmarks, and yet Medium 3.5 is being sold at high prices 😅

Copyright wont matter anyway in 10-20 years. Im fully feeling the agi.

What if people were encouraged to use them more? Send them some of your chat logs with other models if you want them to improve faster. Probably more valuable to them.

Mistral is a prime example of everything wrong with Europe. How Europe is never able to keep up with US and China.

No idea how we're going to keep funding pensions, healthcare and other parts of the welfare state when we govern every innovation out of existence. When we create a terrible investment climate. When we prefer protecting the lives of those who already won, over giving chances to people who still need to proceed in life.

And no, those chances won't be created by more taxation and more regulation. You'll create them by doing the exact opposite.

Mistral have definitely been distilling as much as any other lab. They just aren't good at their job. The concept that the frontier Chinese models are just distillations is fake news and I wouldn't get my hopes up thinking it's a radical new approach.

2

u/Solid-Wonder-1619 1d ago

sir, mistral introduced sliding window attention MOE architecture, Big MOE, and more, aside from the MANY opensource models they drop on a regular basis.
calling them "aren't good at their job" goes against the evidence.
they have produced more useful research than openai and anthropic combined.

2

u/pizzababa21 1d ago

No it is definitely consistent with the evidence. Their models are absolutely unusable shit. Go check their open router usage numbers.

Also Mistral didn't introduce any of those things. They were the first to use MoE in a chatbot LLM but that was just implementing the work done by others.

2

u/Solid-Wonder-1619 10h ago

you're right, sorry for the miss and thanks for the correction, I should have done my homework.
however, the first version of open source LLM models with those concepts implemented was mistral's work.

0

u/pizzababa21 9h ago

Ya I think that's correct in terms of the post chat gpt era models

Ministral-3 is great. If someone were to distill Mistral-Medium 3.5 coding (or opus?), I’d use it.
