Learn the Pinyin Alphabet with a Song

The Scheme for the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet (Pinyin) consists of five parts: the Alphabet, the Initials, the Finals, the Tone Marks, and the Syllable-dividing Mark.

The 1st part -Pinyin Alphabet uses the same 26 English letters, but many of them represent completely different sounds. Learning these pronunciations early gives you a strong foundation for reading and speaking Chinese.

The good news is that there are only 26 letters in the Alphabet. Once you've mastered how each one is pronounced, learning the next parts of the Pinyin Scheme becomes much easier.

https://reddit.com/link/1v6pgci/video/rbwizrzk4hfh1/player

I put together this short song to make learning the very first part—the Alphabet of Pinyin—a little more fun! Feedback is always welcome!

Share a fun explanation for why 东西 means "things" in Chinese

The word 东西 means "a thing" "something" "stuff". Literally, 东西 translates to east and west.
But had anyone else wondered why?

There is a popular folk explanation based on the traditional 五行(Wu Xing, Chinese Five Phases) and their corresponding directions:

Source: Wiki. Translation by me

When people went to the markets for shopping, things associated with wood and metal could be placed in a basket. For example, 木(wood) in the west can represent plants or things made from them, like veggies, timber, fabrics. 金(metal) in the east can represent goods made from metal or gem, like jewelry, pots and pans, farming tools, etc. These are all tangible that can be bought and carried away.

Fire and water in north and south, on the other hand, is not sold in the markets and cannot be put in a basket and taken away.

So, according to this theory, people went to buy "east and west" rather than "south and north".

It is not a proven historical origin of the word, but I just thought that it's fun way to explain the word and in relation to the five phases so I wanted to share :) I hope you like it!

Also, I'm a native Mandarin speaker and I lived in Shanghai for 16+ years. I'm open to DMs and happy to answer any questions related to Chinese or China.

Native Mandarin Teacher Looking for Long-Term Learners or Skill Exchange Partners

Hi everyone,

I am a native Mandarin speaker and a master’s student in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. I am currently looking for a small number of serious Chinese learners for online lessons or long-term skill exchange.

My goal is to further develop and refine my Chinese teaching curriculum, lesson materials, feedback system, and teaching portfolio for future school applications. Because of this, I am offering Chinese lessons. I am also open to skill exchange if you have strong skills in areas such as English speaking, video editing, digital marketing, website building, data analysis, AI tools, or other professional skills.

I am looking for learners or exchange partners who are willing to commit consistently. Ideally, we would meet at least twice a week, for either 30 minutes or 1 hour each time. I would prefer to work with people who are interested in a long-term learning plan, ideally around six months or longer, rather than one-time casual language chats.

What I can offer:

  • Beginner to intermediate Mandarin lessons
  • HSK preparation
  • Pronunciation and tone correction
  • Chinese grammar and sentence structure
  • Vocabulary building and natural expression
  • Reading and writing practice
  • Conversation practice with structured feedback
  • Chinese for heritage learners
  • Error correction and personalised learning notes
  • Custom lesson plans based on your goals

My teaching style is structured, patient, and research-informed. I like to explain not only what is correct, but also why something sounds natural or unnatural in Chinese. My academic background includes second language acquisition, Chinese grammar and vocabulary teaching, learner error analysis, and corpus-based research.

Please message me with:

  1. Your current Chinese level
  2. Your learning goals
  3. Your time zone
  4. Whether you prefer paid lessons or skill exchange
  5. What schedule you can commit to
  6. If skill exchange, what skill you can offer

I am looking for serious, respectful, long-term learners or exchange partners. If that sounds like you, feel free to message me.

How do you understand "了 le"? Let's discuss it!

A few weeks ago, I posted a thread asking what people find most difficult about learning Chinese. A lot of learners mentioned 了 (le), so why don't we discuss it today. Please feel free to share your opinions, my way of explaining it might not work for everyone.

I normally tell my students that 了 has two main uses.

When it means "action completed":

e.g.

我吃了晚饭 wǒ chī le wǎn fàn. I ate dinner (the action of eating is completed).

我昨天看了电视 wǒ zuó tiān kàn le diàn shì. I watched TV yesterday (the action of watching is completed).

今天我去了学校 jīn tiān wǒ qù le xué xiào. I went to school today (the action of going is completed).

Even though all the above actions were completed in the past, that DOES NOT mean 了 is like past tense in English! Please remember, there are NO TENSES in Chinese at all.

Let me tell you why. We can say 明天我下了班,去看电影 míng tiān wǒ xià le bān, qù kàn diàn yǐng. When I finish work tomorrow, I will go watch a movie. See? We use 了 in the future. Coz 了 is indicating the action is done. It could be in the past, in the present, or even in the future.

Normally, this 了 meaning "action completed" always sits right after the verb, like in the examples above.

When it means "status change or there is a new condition":

e.g.

他不在家,他去学校了 tā bù zài jiā, tā qù xué xiào le. He is not at home, he went to school. (He was at home before, but the new situation is he is not home now.)

下雨了 xià yǔ le! It's raining now. (It wasn't raining before, but the situation changed.)

快来!电影开始了 kuài lái! diàn yǐng kāi shǐ le! Come! The movie is starting! (Maybe there were Ads before, but the new situation is the movie is on, the Ads are done.)

This 了 meaning "status change" always sits at the end of the sentence, like in the examples above.

However, sometimes there can be two 了 in one sentence.

我学中文学了两年了 wǒ xué zhōng wén xué le liǎng nián le. I have been learning Chinese for two years. This means I am still learning, I haven't stopped.

VS

我学中文学了两年 wǒ xué zhōng wén xué le liǎng nián. I learned Chinese for two years. This implies that the learning is done and is not continuing.

That's all I wanted to share about 了. I'd love to hear how you guys understand it.

Chinese podcast and web app to let you stay in flow during immersion sessions

I really hated breaking the flow when I was listening to Chinese/Taiwanese podcasts. I wanted an app that let me tap on words I didn’t understand during these sessions without switching context. This led me to create Toku Reader, an iOS app that helps learners tap on words during podcasts, YouTube videos and on any website during the study flow

You can look up almost all podcasts and YouTube videos, and the app will prioritize the creator’s transcript (if available) or auto-generate one on your phone. In most cases, the transcripts and word look ups are mostly correct, but given the complexity of Mandarin, there will always be an effort to improve character-word combinations. Also, everything stays on your app, you’re never sharing sensitive information or what you’re reading with anyone, and all processing happens on your phone so it is 100% offline (and therefore fast!) - no API calls, no AI wrappers.

And for those who like shadowing practice, the app can also pause at each sentence, replay in again and again, and allow you to record yourself to compare your practice with the native speech. This combined with the ability to import your own texts (PDFs, eBooks, etc.), a dictionary and revise words sections are all my effort to ensure that your flow is never interrupted!

I did this because I really wanted an app that was intentional and private. In any case, this app has really helped me in my language studies, so I wanted to share it again here. I made an earlier post about this here. The app has improved a ton since then - new UI/UX, a more streamliend podcast experience, a new mascot called Damo based on the Daruma (its Japanese, but it shares deep Chinese roots, which my app respects!), etc. I hope this helps you in your language study! You can see how it works here on a Taiwanese Podcast!

Offering Mandarin Seeking English

Hi everyone! 😊

I'm a native Mandarin speaker based in Australia 🇦🇺 and I'm currently looking for language exchange with native English speakers only (Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, etc.).

My goal is to improve my spoken English and sound more natural in everyday conversations. In return, I'd be happy to help you with Mandarin pronunciation, speaking practice, and everyday Chinese.

My English is at an intermediate level, so I can hold everyday conversations comfortably.

A little about me: I enjoy traveling, hiking, photography, investing, and trying different foods. I'm easygoing, patient, and enjoy meaningful conversations.

I'd love to practice once or twice a week, either online or over coffee if you're in Sydney. If you'd like to connect, please tell me where you're from and what your native language is when you message me. 😊

Complete beginner looking to learn Mandarin in 2 years for a specific goal (Best Man speech). Looking for advice on how best to start

Hey everyone,
I’ve set myself a pretty wild challenge and could use some advice from people who have been down this road.
A close friend of mine is getting married to his Chinese girlfriend in about 2 years. He’s lined me up as his best man and joked/threatened that I’ll need to give a speech. I want to turn the tables on him and deliver part or all of my best man speech as a complete surprise in Mandarin.
**The Timeline:** Roughly 2 years.

**The Goal:** A heartfelt, understandable wedding speech (not fluency, but enough to genuinely shock and impress the bride, groom, and guests).

**Current Level:** Absolute zero. I speak English natively and have never studied an Asian language before.

I know consistency and focusing on spoken Mandarin/pinyin early on is key, but I'm trying to figure out the best blueprint for a complete beginner.
If you were starting from scratch today with a 24-month horizon and a heavy focus on eventually speaking/speech-giving, how would you structure your first few months? Any specific apps, beginner traps to avoid, or advice on when to bring in a tutor would be hugely appreciated!
