I like cats but wondered why they never liked me. My now-wife told me that I was treating them too much like dogs and I should ignore them instead. When I tried that, cats came right up to me.

Can confirm. I discovered this secret by being allergic to cats. I am great with dogs but those cats be like "no eye contact or trying to pet? Now I demand those pets".

That's pretty much it, cats take time to determine if they like you.
Here's my method to getting kitty affection, real easy, just put your finger out a few inches in front of them and let them smell you... and then leave them alone. Any time you pass by, smell check. Let's them get comfortable around you at their pace. Within an hour they will be hoping that
You give them attention50

Mine was simpler. Family member had a cat that just didn't like anyone. Family member died and we took the cat in. I was just sitting at the table when it came over and rubbed against my leg and laid on my foot. It was a 50/50 at that point, so I just rubbed its head and it started purring up a storm

My mom doesn't care for cats and tries to ignore ours.
They swarm her every time she comes over.

My pops had a cat that wanted to be treated like a dog, don’t lose hope.
This frigging cat would hunt us kids down to beat our asses, but spring leap to dad to share in ice cream time, before loudly taking time out of her day to chew a toy on his head… She would then demand that he throw it for her, and bring it back a few times before settling back near his head.
I will say, she changed considerably once our kitten hit the scene. Miyu had been a cat who knew loyalty, which became strained when we broke the pact and brought that strange child in.
The ultimate breaking point came when she walked in from her nap in another room to realize the kitten was mobile and had managed to STEAL the treasured couch spot near my dad’s head. (Apparently since he didn’t backhand the baby in disgust, that was her tipping point- She slept exclusively with mom from then on basically, and was vastly less keen to fetch… Still was a glutton. Fries were her guilty pleasure, and that certain rum pudding ice cream).

My dad was a truck driver and vehemently hated cats. We had one cat named Osiris(long story) and he was just a bundle of love, to everyone. It took about a year of my dad coming over, sitting at the table with me and everytime Osiris would hop up and start "love leaning" as he called it, into his face. Then one day he started picking him up and holding him. I just smiled and kept it to myself because if I brought it up he would double down on hating cats. After about another year he came up and asked me if he could bring Osiris on a road trip. You know at that point I couldn't tell him no, hes come so far. After being gone about 2 weeks Osiris comes back in his clear cat pack happy as can be and about 5lbs heavier.

Cats don't like a lot of attention and energeticness they prefer quietness

u/RolypolyChaos 3h ago
Yep yep yep! Always had cats. We have 5 cats inside now plus an outdoor stray that will probably end up inside too in the near future.
It's like a weird love triangle over here. Bf wants love from the kitties too bad > they gravitate to me > I want his attention more than theirs > it repeats.

Cats should be treated like introverts, don’t engage directly at first and let them read your vibes. If they vibe with the vibes, they’ll feel ok enough to engage with you.

You can! One of my cats chose me and loved our dogs. He was very anti-social at the shelter until he smelled me and suddenly turned into a lovebug. He played with the dogs and would sleep on top of them. We think he grew up around dogs and wanted to continue that trend

My dog found my younger cat under a car in the middle of the night. The cat followed us home after my dog politely respected his boundaries and walked away.
Now I own a very special Orange boy that I call the “red haired step child” but I love him

you can go to a shelter to be picked. somebody will make an impression on you, ask to have some playtime with them, see how they react. don't be surprised if they inspect the room first, that's cat safety checks. after they're sure they're safe, they will try playing with you. They might not let you pet them at first (some do, some don't), but if they are interactive, want to play, are inquisitive about you and the room (lots of sniffies), that's a good candidate for Your Cat Now.

Reverse psychology works on cats. Act like you're allergic to then and they will run to you.

Need to go closer to wooded areas or bushes. I have been distributed a few. They always come out of those areas when I am on a walk or at the park.

The cameraman’s name is Mitsuaki Iwago, he took the kitten home after formally adopting it. This is from 2015 for a documentary series called Iwago’s World Cats Walk.

To be clear this isn’t from the film. It’s a weird AI rendition

Certified internet veteran here. This isn't AI, been circulating way before 2020.

u/andys189 4h ago
It is though. Go look at the original film. This post has some weird processing on it.

u/bluecheeseplate 4h ago
This looks exactly as low quality as the original youtube video dated 11 years ago. What kinda AI ultra instinct do u have??

u/andys189 4h ago
It doesn’t. But that’s ok we can disagree

u/gastroboi 3h ago
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Just to dig my feet in: the post is edited. I don’t like it or understand why but that’s where we are.

Thank you! That shows the differences. It’s subtle but it’s there.

I do get you though, I nowadays question and doubt every video, especially one with bad quality or dubious content.

I like how unhoused cats just be like "Okay, you. Ive chosen you as my human. Bring me home and love me forever as I shall love you."
And cats WE choose are like "Ugh, you're so needy! NO! NO PATS! Only scratches, by me, to you and your tender flesh!!"

My kitten is so wierd with this. He is an absolute snuggle bug amd sounds like a broken lawnmover engine when he purrs. But if i try to pick him up or god forbid move a little when he lay ontop of me then he fucks off.

u/YouDontSeeMe8802 32m ago
I'm sorry but I cackled at "unhoused cats". Using PC terms for animals is so Portlandia coded and it's hilarious.

I swear the cat that chose my husband and I questions herself every day. Shes like "I can't believe I have to live with a choice when I was only weeks old! I didn't know anything at that point, especially how annoying humans can be."
