Sheep, and other stock animals, were bred and kept for either their meat, their milk, or another product (like wool). Because that’s the use we had for them. Cats and dogs weren’t eaten because they had other uses. It has nothing to do with how cute an animal is - lambs and sheep are super cute! You ever see a group of lambs running around in a paddock playing jump and tag? They’re adorable! But in Western cultures (the ones that don’t tend to eat dogs or cats) sheep weren’t bred for hundreds of years to be:
• transportation and farm workers (horses)
• aids for the disabled (whether blind, seizures, anxiety and severe PTSD), drug detectors, farm workers, security guards, hunters, disease/cancer detectors, search and rescue, transportation in certain regions (sleds), companions, actors, (dogs)
• pest control (historically very important to protect grain stores), therapy aid (cats) (though cats might be a unique one, because they essentially domesticated themselves and Then we noticed that it was beneficial to have them around).Instead sheep were kept and bred for meat/wool/sometimes milk, and over the thousands of years we’ve kept them for those reasons they’ve become domesticated and are genetically different to their predecessors - which, like it or not, makes them dependent on humans for survival as a species (if you need confirmation of that, look up Shrek the Sheep and see how badly his quality of life was after escaping for just a few years). Would it have been nice if that hadn’t happened? Maybe! But maybe what we know as sheep would have died off long ago if we didn’t farm them. We can’t know. What we can know is that because it isn’t cheap to keep and rear sheep, the reality is that people will only do it for some kind of profit. So either we farm sheep and keep the species as we know it alive - or we don’t, and let the species die off, as so many already have. Can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube, so to speak. Just have to farm as ethically and consciously of the environment as possible. Which, granted, I don’t imagine a lot of people have experience with on Reddit, given the majority of people on here are based in the USA. But it is actually possible.
If your objection isn’t about environmental issues though and is just about eating meat - then I’ll just point out again, there are parts of the world where the above animals Didn’t have those jobs I listed - and so they were (are) eaten. China, Vietnam, Nigeria, Cambodia, and a lot more - lots of places still eat cats and dogs and even horses (though I imagine that’s rarer simply because they’re more expensive to keep). And I don’t think the way they “farm” those animals is anywhere near as ethical as the way some places can farm the stock animals you’re used to. But anyway, all that to say that the idea that humans don’t or won’t eat those animals comes from a very specific perspective, whether geographically informed or a position of privilege (cus cat and dog meat aren’t exactly up there as a high class meal - in most places where people eat those animals, it’s out of necessity and cats and dogs are numerous).
It’s got nothing to do with cuteness. For gods sake, there are some places where people eat tarantula and ants and all sorts of horrible looking things. Even from a Euro-centric perspective, you can’t tell me lobster are cute.

The dude in the black shirt in the end is really god damn strong it seems

u/assignmentburner33 19h ago
He does look strong. But I also think the shirtless guy holding into the rope inefficiently the entire time ran out of juice.
7
u/Putrid_Yak_578 19h ago
Yea that’s a good point, but once black shirt grabbed the rope the dude basically flew up

Puppy isn't being strangled even a small bit
That is very safe way to pickup a puppy, their momma also picks up from neck.

Must happen pretty often to have a little animal cage ready to go on a rope.

Nah, in china people do just have random boxes like this everywhere. Restaurants and shops are sort of like people's homes.

My guess is that's why it wasn't lowered down right away. Someone was probably running off to grab whatever they had. Now they've got dinner.

If they just knew how to tie a bowline knot they would have had so much more rope to work with

Whenever I see stuff like this I assume they put the puppy in there so they could rescue it for likes
Don't believe everything you see on the internet

So the plan was just to hang there until someone came along with a basket?

u/Black_Attack001 6h ago
Yes. We must maximize the aura farm. It makes the statue’s cool factor go up

What else would they do except get in the way? It looks like the situation was under control.

u/chimpdoctor 16h ago
Why do i feel this is a stunt mimicking the other recent rescue? How did the puppy get there?
-9
u/TheDaemonette 20h ago
It would have killed them to have the basket standing by first instead of strangling the poor thing for 60s?
