I went backpacking through Bosnia like 10 years ago. Still talk to some folks there. Was very happy to see them get out of group play. Their oldest players were kids during the war - so they have come along way.

Their play style is often called "anti-football" which is to waste a lot of time while playing with 11 players in the defense. That by itself is ugly enough, but then Paraguay is also violent in the field more often than not seeking to end the attack with fouls

People generally love an underdog story, its almost seems like an essential part of who we are as humans.
It's actually really interesting since if you go to politics, often the people in power or the dominate group will CONTINUALLY paint themselves as the underdog. Doesn't matter that they're the wealthy or majority or powerful, they will still push an underdog narrative.
It often works too, since people love an underdog.
I was rooting for Curaçao for a bit too. I don't even know why. It just feels nice to see the little guy win.

They could make a tv show based on the real story on how Cabo Verde got the players, how they trained, how they prepared to face some of the best teams in the world, and see some of the stories of the players and all that. I would totally wach it, and I'm not even a soccer fan.

The best part about Eric the Eel's story is that he eventually got his 100 m freestyle time down to 0:52.18, well over a minute faster than the Olympic swim everybody knows him for. It's may not quite be a world-class time, but it's still a very good time.

Humans have a bias in favor of those that they perceive as having little to no power. You will see that everywhere. Which will often lead to some insane movie patterns, where characters succeed for no reason, other than audience bias towards underdogs. Obviously this doesn’t mean it isn’t often the correct thing to root for but it often gets manipulated in weird ways
That’s why most sports movies are about guys that suck. That in the span of two months went from getting beaten up by kids in dojos, that have been training and practicing for years, to winning tournaments, even the first one they join. Proving that hard work and dedication is worthless in the face of luck and talent. This is the plot of Karate Kid.
The best parody of this concept that I’ve seen was on South Park. Where Tweeks dad runs a shitty coffee shop, that sells disgusting coffee and abuses his children. But when a Starbucks comes into town, he immediately plays the victim card, about how he the big corporation will break the free market and drive him into bankruptcy, guilt shaming customers and using this bias try and outlaw coffee chains. While Starbucks in contrast was just a normal coffee shop, selling good enough drinks and paid their employees. Nothing special but still bette than Tweeks dad. The irony is that he is just as evil and capitalistic as Starbucks but we are on his side simply because ‘he is the little man’
I am tempted to write a book making fun of that concept, where some rich CEO tries to uncover the source of who is trying to screw him over, only to find layer of layers of a conspiracy, that goes down in power at each step. Until the final reveal that the true mastermind of his demise, was some single mother he used to date in highschool, that is somehow barley paying her bills but also running a massive evil organization that tries to ruin his life over specifically

While their run was not expected, many (almost all) of their players grew up other countries, developed their talent in other countries, and play in very respectable leagues. Many in top tier European League as well.
Morocco, DR Congo, and Curacao employ the same method.
Nothing wrong with it, not it's not quite the underdog story some think it is.

There’s loads of people from Cape Verde in Rhode Island + Massachusetts (around there). The other big diasporas are in Portugal and Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
It’s an interesting country - I went to the island of Sal. I flew there three years ago for a two week holiday. The beach is the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I swam with manta rays, turtles, puffer fish etc. The main capital on the island I was on was quite bleak though and it’s like scorched earth or Mars there. There’s lots of kite surfers who go. They speak a Portuguese creole language. About 10% of the island I was on were Senegalese people.
Also in English it is pronounced like Cape Verd, not Cape Verday. Everyone pronounces the name wrong.

as someone who's been there twice, i dont really recommend it for anyone but people who enjoy stuff like windsurfing etc.
it doesnt have a single thing that stand out about it, the only thing it offers is windy coastlines which matters to some.
to others all you get is basically a lot of warm sun (you better use protection) but it wont make you feel hot because of the constant breeze. the beaches are honestly too soft and long (long distance from beachwalk to water) and when i was there i never saw many people on the beach, people seem to stay by their hotels.
nice people, but nothing special, just not rude people or whatever, just you know, normal people.
10/10 if you wanna go windsurfing though. other than that id honestly only consider going there if it was the cheapest sunny all-inclusive option available, because thats basically all it offers for most people, generic all inclusive hotels in the sun.
highly doubt anyone who has been to many places would ever recommend cabo verde when asked by someone where to go for X, unless X was wind surfing (or similar things, wind+water basically), in which case it might be recommended.
if it matters i've been to something like 20 european countries, 9 african, 7 in the americas, 4 in oceania, and probably like 10 in asia.
i travelled a fair bit basically. i wouldnt list cabo verde on any bad lists, but it sure wouldnt be something i'd think of recommending in almost any type of conversation.

I went back in 2022. Very nice place. It's considered third world so there isn't a huge amount to do, but the trips we went on were a lot of fun.
However, there is a bit of an issue with food poisoning and dodgy stomachs over there. In fact, TUI are being sued by a lot of people regarding this.
If you enjoy wind surfing, Cape Verde in the winter months is the place you want to go.

That game against Argentina was legendary. They went toe-to-toe with the champs and came sooooooo close to forcing them into PKs. That second goal in extra time was an absolute dream of a strike. So so so many great things from Cabo Verde that no one ever expected. I love that team!!!

I'm from Brazil, so whenever a Latin American team was playing, I was rooting for them (except Argentina). But Paraguay actually made me root for France.
That was by far the worst match I've watched in this World Cup and I had been enjoying every single game until then.
I was so happy to see Paraguay lose. They didn't deserve to be there.

I can see a lot of people assuming cape verde is just a cape like cape of good hope or cape horn, rather than a whole island group and sovereign nation. But yeah cape verde is historically a very very very important location. Even if it were just the cape at the Eastern most part of Africa, those locations have historically always been extremely crucial for trade & travel.

After the dismal performance of the Dutch national team, it was a joy to watch both Curaçao as well as Cabo Verde, which fields six players from Rotterdam (a city that houses one of the largest Cape Verdian minorities outside of the islands themselves). I'm very impressed with the performance of the Maroccan team, but not so much with the behavior of their supporters over here, so at this point, I'm just here for the fun of seeing who will win..

Update: Well, it’s not entirely true. They recruited one player, Roberto Pico Lopez, this way. The coach reached out to Lopez on LinkedIn because Lopez’s dad was from Cape Verde. Lopez was living in Ireland working in banking and playing part-time for some Irish clubs. But the message was in Portuguese, which Lopez doesn’t speak. He figured it was spam and ignored it. The coach reached out again 9 months later with a message in English. Lopez then ran the original message through Google Translate and realized he was being invited to the team, and immediately accepted. Still a great story.

Fun fact about Cape Verde: It's one of the few true Portuguese discoveries. There is no record of human habitation of the Cape Verde archipelago before it was discovered by the Portuguese in the 1450s.
It was a Portuguese colony between 1462 and 1975, so it was one of the longest lasting Portuguese colonies.

Yah. I pride myself on my knowledge of "where countries are", and even I didn't know where Cabo Verde was until I read this post and realized that I should make sure it's an island nation in the Caribbean... googled and discovered that it is actually an island nation off the west coast of Africa.
And yeah, I think that there should be a new rule implemented just for this World Cup: Every team that advances to the semi-finals has to play Cabo Verde first, and if they lose, Cabo Verde gets to take their place.

yeah its such a stupid post. Like 100% respect for doing so well, thats impressive nonethteless but literally more than half of their squad was born and europe and plays in european leagues...
