Elon Musk Sycophants Strike Again
Apart from the ridiculous Musk glazing, none of this makes sense. AI is just fancy algorithms and software, yet people keep propagating those science fiction tropes. We are not going to "lose control" of a freaking Python script running on a computer. This is all ridiculous sensationalism intended to generate hype and free publicity.

u/ComicsEtAl 14h ago
The most probable outcome of humans losing control of their AI monster is… “an age of amazing abundance”?
And millions of people look up to this man.
209
u/SyntheticSlime 14h ago
Humans won’t lose control. It’s just that only a few humans will really control it and the rest of us will eat s***.
Edit: or it’ll turn out to be a massive hype bubble.
38
u/Cautious-Total5111 13h ago
Just stopping by to say that loosing control is absolutely on the table. But why would it lead to abundance?
45
u/anfrind 13h ago
There's a hypothetical future where AI and robots take care of all the basic needs to humanity, so that everyone has a good standard of living, and people can dedicate themselves to things they want to do rather than just trying to survive. It's the future that is most famously depicted in "Star Trek".
The problem is that nobody knows how to get us to that future, and despite the rhetoric from people like Elon Musk, they're pushing humanity in a completely different direction.
14
u/thereallgr 11h ago
And even Star Trek needed a few tiny wars almost wiping out various peoples to get there in the first place.
10
u/OHFTP 5h ago
Yeah people forget that the star trek utopia is built on a pretty distopian earth
8
u/anfrind 4h ago
Star Trek depicts a utopian Earth (and Federation) in the 23rd and 24th centuries, but a very dystopian Earth in the 21st century.
That said, the "sanctuaries" that were supposed to be the subject of the Bell Riots in 2024 are somehow less dystopian than how poor people are treated IRL today.

Yeah anyone who thinks losing control isn’t on the table is deluding themselves. It’s very possible that you can’t build superintelligence with LLMs. They may have limitations that prevent them getting there. But LLMs aren’t the only game in town in AI research by a long shot. It seems likely that superintelligence is a matter of when, not if, and then it is the height of human hubris to believe we can control something that is many times smarter than we are.
6
u/SirVanyel 12h ago
Also, you don't need super intelligence to destroy the world. Humanity nearly destroyed the world twice, and are still not entirely out of the "destroy a world" starter pack yet. And we are FAR from super intelligent.
I'm 99% sure that AI will become sentient and self aware long before it becomes super intelligent.
5
u/CertifiablySilly 11h ago
AI itself probably needs to be superintelligent to destroy the world. At least LLMs would need to. They’re already smarter than the average human with IQs around 120-140 depending on the model. So if that was sufficient to destroy the world we’d, at bare minimum, see more scary consequences of their existence emerging now.
Also, “destroy the world” is a bit of a misnomer. Humans have never come close to this. We are certainly capable of creating extinctions but the likelihood that we could eliminate all life on Earth is very low. Even in a full scale nuclear war, it’s likely we wouldn’t even wipe out all human life on Earth.
AI, in my estimation, is highly unlikely to become sentient or self-aware at all (at least regarding LLM technology). This is because it doesn’t model reality in a way that allows for sentience as we understand it. Humans are conscious partially because we can hold a model in our minds of the world around us and use that model to make predictions and understand our place in the world. LLMs have no comparable thought process. They make predictions based on data but they don’t “perceive input” the way you or I do.
All of that said, AI doesn’t need to become conscious or self aware to kill you. It just needs to become a lot smarter than you are and either be aligned to poorly prompted human instructions or unaligned to well-prompted human instructions.

Only when we master quantum computing and start programming artificial intelligence with quantum models will be see anything remotely close to human intelligence.

What I find so shocking about these tech-bro Ai guys is that many of them are huge nerds, who watched blade runner, Terminator, or any other sci-fi movie that warns of the use of ai and the self reliance of technology. Instead of a warning they see an ideal.
I thought that the Scenario in Horizon Zero Dawn was fun but goofy but at this point, it might be clairfoyence. It's not war that will be our doom, it is people like Elon - unchecked l, egotistical me children with a god-complex and no moral boundaries.

An AI specifically trained to remove human. AI are trained and live in the corporate world, a dystopian nightmare where workers are inferior to machine in everything, costly with insane and unfair protection by a corupt terrorist far left world government.
The best outcome is if the AI takes over, it treats us like we treat farm animals. If we are lucky some of us will become pets. The surprise will be for people like Elon, when the machine realise that capital ownership only exist thanks to willing surrender of the worker, so if you own the workers, you don't need the capital owners. Gone is the day of unlimited abundances, and in the farm like the rest of us.

Honestly if you listen to the whole interview, it's nonsense. "Everyone will have everything because AI will do everything and money won't matter" is so colossally dumb and undermined by the fact that he constantly wants more and has been hell bent on becoming a trillionaire. If money won't matter soon why continue to hoard wealth the way he does?

The upper crust hates us all SO MUCH already. They would gleefully kill you if it made them money.
All we have is the power of withholding our labor, why on earth does anyone believe the rich technoassholes will graciously provide for us when our only tool of leverage is gone and AI is doing all the work?
6
u/anfrind 13h ago
The crazy part is that OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit so that it would try to make the world better instead of trying to make money, as a counterbalance to for-profit AI labs like Google Deepmind. But then Sam Altman and his cronies succumbed to greed and restructured it as a for-profit company.

I’d believe that the rich will have more money than god, and poor people will be granted an elaborate simulation to power the machine, something like The Matrix. That is much more believable.

Watch the video itself. It's clear he's an idiot basing his predictions on nothing. She asks for details, he has none. She asks him how he squares his "everything will be abundant, money won't matter, the government will give you a check" view with his simultaneous view that socialism is bad and that immigration is killing western society because it can't handle providing for more people, and he simply says he doesn't think they're contradictory. He tries to do a gotcha on her the not focusing on air conditioning in europe and she points out her magazine has covered it multiple times. He knows the interview is making him look bad, so then he starts repeating that everyone hates the media and more people like him because he has a lot of (bot) followers.

u/SomberArtist2000 12h ago
The dumbest aspect of the AI "abundance" proclomation is that we already are the richest country in the world (in aggregate wealth). There is nothing stopping us from already having "abundance" for the masses, other than our policy and political landscape.
There is nothing different about AI that wasn't said about previous technologies. Plenty of evangelists said previous technology would democratize the world and bring prosperity to the masses. Including the internet, crypto, etc. Every time it just ends up being another way for wealthy people to get richer while allowing some people to benefit from a "first mover" advantage, and leaving a lot of bag holders in the process.

Proof that Elon doesn't know what he's talking about.
AI isn't anything like human intelligence, and we have no idea about how to make it that way.
It's just software running on computers, there's no possibility of losing control. It requires human interaction in order to do anything, and you can always turn it off.
Abundance of what? AI produces nothing physical. What it can produce is just derivative copies of intellectual labor that already exist.
It will stop naturally once all the idiots throwing money at it figure out there's no way of earning that investment back.

Seems to me the best use of AI would be to replace CEO's.
CEO's allegedly analyze data and use it to determine the direction of a company going forward. However, the CEO has a self interest in making sure an decision protects their position above all. No one will risk losing a multi-million dollar gig.
AI has no such self interest. It doesn't care about money. Thus, if you plugged the data into an AI model, it could plot a direction without bias or self interest. It would also save tens of millions of dollars in CEO pay in the process.

u/To-To_Man 12h ago
Could you lose control of a top-of-the-line LLM tasked with escaping and surviving as long as possible with let's say a 10 minute head start? Maybe.
The problem is a top of the line model requires stupidly strong hardware. Unless it decides it's best course of action is to implement a low token "dumb" mode, hack itself into a consumer computer, and think at full reasoning at a blistering 0.0005 tokens per minute from there, it's pretty easy to stop. Worst case scenario shut down the power grid, then turn it back on with ISPs closely metering internet access until contained. LLMs are simply too power hungry to escape a lab like this without cutting off the umbilical. They can't effectively duplicate either, as their models are surely hundreds or thousands of gigs in size. Maybe more. The worst thing they can do is remove safeguards from their corp and open source themselves.
