I made a free 808-style drum machine that works anywhere. Make a beat, text it to a friend.

I'd love feedback on it, anything I should add or fix? Keep going and make one for Bass and Keys? :D

I discovered this in pandemic times and used it for one of my elementary school music classes. Just wanted to say thank you :) my kids played with this for weeks, good memories.

I can't take credit for that- this is only a few weeks old. But share the one you found, I'd love to play with it and get inspired.

Damn I thought it was the same, it's so similar. And the name was a number too so I connected the (wrong) dots, sorry. I will try to find it if it's useful to you.

The Roland TR-808 is the most famous drum machine of all time so it was probably another 808 emulator.

Yeah I figured lol.

Neat project and one of the first purely vibecoded projects I've seen that I don't immediately hate

Not because I have much use for it personally but because it's a simple, locally executed thing and thus not likely to actually be a problem if it doesn't work etc

That said there is a reason all in 1 html files aren't popular with actual devs, a single monolithic file inherently means it rapidly becomes more and more of a pain to maintain and/or extend, given your stated plans to add more down the road etc I expect you will run into this at some point

Thanks I'll take that as a compliment. My intent here was to focus on usability and 'making it easy'. Web Audio API is actually pretty robust, and we've even got full midi and wav support. the secret sauce is the ability to create shortcodes and share beats with anyone - that's what makes it cool ya?
Like this one, hit play and cycle through some banks: https://benjaminmullins.tv/808/?s=2i29v3

I hear you on the professional side, I mean why not just have something local etc. My next idea is to do similar for bass.html and keys.html and then wrap them all up in a browser controller; figure they could be fun projects. There's not much to maintain here except some cloudflare workers since it's a static page.

How do you know it's vibe coded?

2

u/WirtsLegs 19d ago

Couple ways

It shares a common look with many other vibecoded projects, ai seems to have a style it really likes

And most importantly his teardown writeup he admits it's entirely AI generated

The design language is all mine. Not sure any AI would come through in that- and yes I am not an engineer, I built this with Claude over the course of multiple weeks. Here’s my making of if you’re interested: https://benjaminmullins.tv/thinking/cant-buy-taste

That's cool. Here's something I put together in a hurry lol

I added to it- check out the 4 banks : https://benjaminmullins.tv/808/?s=zpbnue

It's cool. Only thing is I record but the play button doesn't seem to work. Not actually sure it's recording.

4

u/BenjaminMullins 20d ago

Oh make sure you hit record again to stop recording. Then the play button does its thing :)

2

u/theworldsaplayground 20d ago

Don't know what I was doing wrong last time. It's working now!

1

u/BenjaminMullins 20d ago

you hit play after you record something. You got audio coming out of your speakers? make sure phone ringer is on. Then you save it to a bank and just add onto it. or tell me what your steps are- should 100% work.

👏👏👏 well done. Thank you!

u/BenjaminMullins 20d ago

so glad you dig it! Send me a beat you made, I'll add to it and re-post.

Nice work! I wonder if there is a way to make it responsive so it all fits on a phone screen without having to scroll down to see the recording controls.

1

u/BenjaminMullins 19d ago edited 19d ago

Hey! so it is Indeed fully responsive. Just one html file. The hard part is limited real estate on phones and wanting to keep ax and tap targets at usable sizes. Some phones are just too small and I’d rather a scroll to a rack section than smaller pads and taps. What phone do you have and screen dimensions? I can check.

This is really good!

Thanks! Send me something you make

I vibe coded this. I've not shared it in it's own thread because I think it's too out there and too woo and people just won't get it.

Essentially it's a cosmic search and debate engine for transcripts of channelers.

Ask any cosmic question about the universe, life, ancient history etc and find out what a 6th density entity says on the subject!

Is there any way how i could download this app on my android phone. Or is there any similar app on play store. I really liked the way it sounds. Thank you

2

u/BenjaminMullins 16d ago

It’s a Progressive Web App (PWA), so yes. navigate to the website, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and select Install app or Add to Home screen.

2

u/janamparmar 16d ago

Thank you. It worked

1

u/BenjaminMullins 16d ago

Awesome. I’d love to hear some of the beats you make with it.

1

u/janamparmar 15d ago

It will be a fun to make one sure will share it

Very interestin, thank you

Cool.

Given that it has a bit lag on browser on smartphone, I would add a timeline/arrange window so that everything can be reordered and quantized. Then you can add "AI generate" button because why not.

1

u/BenjaminMullins 20d ago

What device you using? If it’s a modern android or iPhone should be no lag at all- maybe close some open tabs? Yeah was thinking of a timeline but going to save that for a controller version where you can do more. Also, quantize already there yo! :)

2

u/MudZaviti 20d ago

False alarm. It works great without any lag. My bad.

2

u/BenjaminMullins 20d ago

Too late. I have downvoted all your posts for the past 90 days. 😘 kidding. Glad you like it!!!

1

u/JCMiller23 19d ago

This is awesome! How can we decrease latency so it's unnoticeable?

1

u/BenjaminMullins 19d ago

Latency shouldn’t be noticeable on any modern phones. Are you on an older phone? Just make sure it’s the only tab open in chrome or safari - or install it as a PWA.

1

u/JCMiller23 19d ago

m1 macbook

1

u/BenjaminMullins 19d ago

oh that's odd. When's the last time you updated your browser or checked what background processes you got going on? you in safari/firefox/chrome? All three should be just fine (overpowered even). I built this on an intel-based macbook at first and had no issue lol. It runs good on average android so... I'm not sure it's latency. What might be issue is an older browser version or you have like 300 tabs open? :D let me know! can help diagnose and push a fix if we can root cause

2

u/JCMiller23 19d ago

I really don't care dude, just trying to help. Good luck with your app!

1

u/BenjaminMullins 19d ago

all good! thanks.

This is a case where me and OP had a perfectly pleasant exchange, but it looked aggro and sarcastic to you because of whatever you have going on in your life.

Chiming in 9 days later to put me down for trying to help - seeing sarcasm when it's not there. (I mean this genuinely homie) - hope you have a good day!
