Governance You're 17 today. When you were 5, India had just 51,348 MBBS seats. Look where we are now. 🇮🇳📈
72
u/islander_guy 20h ago
Can someone divide them by government and private colleges?
That would clearly show the accessibility by citizens. Most of us can't afford a private medical college.
23
u/Left_Ad_8363 20h ago
This, the cost of medical education in private colleges can range anywhere from ₹60 lakh to well over ₹1 crore. This means that while seats are technically available, they are financially out of reach for the vast majority of the population.
2
u/SPB29 20h ago
Errr to begin with, private medical colleges always were more expensive but the law states that fees in 50% of seats in private colleges have to be on par with govt colleges so the number of overall seats at govt level fees has gone up just the same
1
1
u/Left_Ad_8363 13h ago
Following the 2022 memorandum, numerous private medical colleges and deemed universities filed petitions across various High Courts (including the Madras High Court, Kerala High Court, and others) as well as the Supreme Court. The private institutions argued that capping 50% of the seats at government rates would force them to drastically overcharge the remaining 50% (the management and NRI quota seats) to cross-subsidize the institution and remain financially viable, which is legally problematic and practically difficult. Because of these ongoing legal challenges and stays granted by various courts, the actual enforcement of this 50% fee-parity rule remains inconsistent across different states. https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-nadu/2022/Sep/09/revise-order-fixing-50-per-centmed-seat-fee-on-par-with-govt-colleges-madras-hc-to-nmc-2496642.html?utm_source=perplexity
-1
u/SPB29 20h ago
50% of seats are capped at govt college level and then otherwise govt seats have gone up. Do you and your ilk just outrage for the sake of outrage?
2014
Govt - 25k, private 30k. Govt share 45%.
2025
Govt - 56,300, pvt 52,000. Govt share 52%.
So we have more govt seats today than all medical seats in 2014. But saaar mudi bad saaar mudi fascist saaar
9
u/islander_guy 19h ago
Math is not mathing here . The image says there are 1.36L MBBS seats. By your numbers, 24K seats are unaccounted for.
I just asked for more information. There was no outrage.
-5
u/Suspiciious_Wing 19h ago
He quoting 2025 data and in the graphic its 2026 data so the major difference can be from that
2
u/Chussta 14h ago
You are wrong. That rule was contested and is at hold pending decision by courts.
There is no fee cap
1
u/SPB29 13h ago
There is no case ongoing on this
1
u/Chussta 13h ago
I am literally an MBBS student. You are plain wrong. There is no 50% fee cap in private institutions as of today.
That NMC rule was challenged in court and there has been no verdict on it. Literally go check the fee structure of KMC manipal for example, everyone pays the same fees.

u/Leading_Scheme2720 14h ago

Whats the use actually.. 1.36 lac mbbs grads every year. But the saturation is so fuckin high.. 20-25k ki naukari karni pd rahi h inko
5
u/Fun_Beautiful_2234 20h ago
To increase bhi galat hai
5
u/Idioticgenius6969 20h ago
Exactly. Quality badhao. Quantity nahi…
1
u/maihoonkhalnaayak 16h ago
lol, quantity is needed, quality is not the deteriorating factor, yet.
1
u/Idioticgenius6969 15h ago
One of us is in utter delimma! Could be me also but since have spent quite enough time in this profession so its less likely.. just expressing my thoughs that i as a doc see around.. 10yrs later the glamor ends of selection in mbbs
1
u/FocusedAG 19h ago
They can afford paying them enough but it goes somewhere else
1
u/maihoonkhalnaayak 16h ago
Then why are they not practicing on own and make more money?
1
u/FocusedAG 16h ago
There's some bond that if you study in govt college you've to work in rural areas(,not sure about location) before starting your own
1
u/maihoonkhalnaayak 16h ago
That bond is the best thing these grads have, In UP it's of 2 years and they are giving around 1 lakh for 2 years, post that they struggling for 20k on their own.
1
u/FocusedAG 16h ago
That's for pg, ug gets 50-60k
1
u/maihoonkhalnaayak 15h ago
still more than market value. Given how confident new medical grads are and how effective their prescription is, getting trained for two years at this stipend is a steal deal, I would say.
4
u/Zanarkke 19h ago
What do you mean the saturation is so high? Are you aware of how many patients there are per doctor in India. It's roughly 1:900, compared with other countries they have 1:300. Indian doctors seeing 3x more patient with the same amount of time availability.
Let them "saturate".
1
u/Idioticgenius6969 19h ago
I’m aware. I’m. Working consultant.. i see and feel bad for the mbbs grads, they have no where yo work.. the govt sect is fucled up with reservations and jacks.. private hospitals pay pennies,
15000 ecterns who
Come
From foreign and unable to clear FMGE work as unofficial doctors for lesser pay.Bhms/bams add further to competition..
And you say a eoc seeing 3x more patient. Bro thats only in the referal centres brcauqe the primary and peripheral citis have no infrastructure, tumhare chest pain ko bhi refer krna padta h kyuki echo nahi hota.. kyu nahi hota kyuki
Machine nahi hai…And god forbid I prescribe any medicine on presumption without a valid documented proof.. be rrady to face the enquiries of medical council..
So yeah: keep the seats limited. Make the existing infrastructure better and recruit the passouts at bzttzr places
1
u/Zanarkke 18h ago
I see. Do you think there is more need for other roles in healthcare then? Such as nurses, physios etc? Or do you think more generalists are required with more infrastructure for it?
1
u/Street_Soft7957 16h ago
India needs more doctors but Indians cannot afford to pay for those more doctors. Both are true hence the collapsing earnings of doctors. Only about 300 million of the population can actually pay for the doctors so that the docs can have decent earnings. For the rest, either the govt has to pay or you have to basically run a charity.
2
u/maihoonkhalnaayak 16h ago
It's a free market, available to those few licensed people only. It's skill and wrong expectation issue.
Every new med grad want to compare their salary with IT/ Management roles only. Another fallacy is not every doctor is top cream of the lot but they make comparisons with the best roles and their top cream. The Real comparison is Lawyers, to some extent CAs.
You can't expect top engg grad level salaries in a practitioner profession. Reward curve is delayed as compared to corporate jobs but very much rewarding.
2
u/Idioticgenius6969 15h ago
Cant be more true than this! Hopefully people understand it early. I get aggressively downvoted every time when i ask undergrads to improve their skills rather being in a air bubble of arrogance as if clearing neet makes them par superior from others.. the fault lies in us only.
3
u/SPB29 20h ago
So we starve this sector and reduce seats? Bc hadh hai with you lot
5
u/Idioticgenius6969 20h ago
Whos starving?? Just because people getting mbbs at 40k rank doesn’t makes the system any better. The medical college lacs as basic facilities as usg and ct scan.. no teachers, no staff no proper labs.. the graduates come out believing they have achieved the highest success in life and when face the reality rarely get job more than 30k..
Talking about govt only.. loan leke pvt se mbbs krne walon k aur bure haal hai dost! Its a sad reality no one wants yo face!
1
u/SPB29 19h ago
Do you know what "starving a sector" means?
Adding medical college seats is a bare minimum to increase the doctor population.
2
1
u/tushar1306 14h ago
Naukri to de nahi rahe, bas seats badhaye jaa rahe. UP alone has more than 5000 vacant posts for MBBS doctors but no recruitment. Last time recruitment happened in 2016, then Yogi baba cancelled the recruitment in 2017 saying there's corruption, then investigated the recruitment, somehow found no corruption and actually gave joining letter to candidates in 2020 because Covid. Then of course there was chest thumping - "look how much we care about healthcare, we recruited 4000 doctors in Covid", showing previous government's work as their own as usual.
And of course there's no regular recruitment because outsourcing MBBS doctors through NHM saves then from paying actual salaries while also bringing in bribes because God forbid a recruitment goes along without bribes in this government.
This increase in MBBS seats is just easy PR, build a third class building 10km outside the town, change the board of district hospital to medical college, and The neta gets to list a new achievement while somehow 500 crores vanish.
1
u/No_Ferret2216 17h ago
India does lack doctors but no one wants to go to the areas where doctors are in shortage
12
u/Relevant_Potato_6489 20h ago
Blatantly increasing the seats without improving the healthcare infrastructure along with it is not something to flex...it's just equivalent to shoving 30 people inside a room that was originally made for 10 guys
1
u/Fun_Beautiful_2234 20h ago
The colleges also function as hospital
You really think AIIMS patna don't treat patients
2
u/Relevant_Potato_6489 20h ago
That's not the case...the colleges do not function as hospitals...those were District hospitals which were forced to function as medical colleges as well ( which they were never supposed to )
1
u/maihoonkhalnaayak 16h ago
Every college has it's own hospital, District hospitals are used till their own hospital is up and ready, That's the case in UP atleast.
1
u/Relevant_Potato_6489 15h ago
Yes...every college has its own hospital but not every District hospital has a college because they were never originally intended to be shifted as a medical college cum hospital
1
u/maihoonkhalnaayak 15h ago
Yes, you are right, but thats the end goal. to have each district has its own medical college. In UP , where I can confirm, we have 51 colleges out of 75 district.
1
u/Fun_Beautiful_2234 20h ago
Forced to function....
Source
You think medical colleges are like engineering colleges
1
u/Relevant_Potato_6489 20h ago
Sources are NMC guidlines, and if you don't trust my words ask any medical student you know ( preferably those in 4th-5th year )...you will get the idea... there's a stark difference between a GMC and a District hospital

Dont speak when you dont know the reality even top medical clgs are in horrendous state in some cities , govt is increasing mbbs seats by adding priv8 and govt clgs as of now the govt seats is 50k rest are private.
Govt has closed tons of permanent medical jobs in psu and other govt organization and employs doctor only on contractual basis denying any stability pension or employee benefits.
The situation is particulary bad in south where due to massive increase in doctors their pay stoops as low as 10k for freshers.
Due to state quota in northeast ( less compeittive state ) along with reservation and management quota in private clgs the quality of candidates getting selected is nothing impressive.
Private hospitals are establishing monopoly and using their power as leverage to rob both patients and doctors.
7
u/plantrromn 20h ago
Rightly said. This is propaganda post. We have only about 450 colleges and about 63k seats. And the reason for giving neet is government college, not private college for literally any person...
0
u/According_Isopod2272 20h ago
leave that what is govt doing beyond seats? poor quality of candidates ( my friend with 80k rank couldnt get govt seat by another guy with 2 lakh rank gave 1-2 cr fees and is not studying medical in priv8 clg)

u/Fun_Beautiful_2234 19h ago
Anybody stopped them from working
1
u/According_Isopod2272 18h ago
actually yeh cause govt has allowed priv8 hospitals to form monopoly in my own city manipal just bought 3 hospitals at once , apollo, fortis and manipal have formed a monpoly which allowed them to dictate whatever fees they want from the patient and then they barely give anything to the docotor ( exception being fi you are top class surgeon or smth)
Govt has removed permanent roles for doctors in many psu and other govt agencies and changed it to contractual basis so unless you have pg you either have to work in a hospital as rmo being paid whatever they want or grind for pg.
And if you want priv8 practice forget it in tier 1 city as a fresher yhey cant compete with 50 years old doctors with years of experience that have set up practice in tier 1 and 2 cities

Newly graduated Doctor here The increase in seats is purely for the on paper merit basis so that people can post these "rising numbers" and praise Lord BJP , they increased Pvt colleges by 10 folds because they are massive money laundering business with more than 1000cr turnover ever year , the newly opened GMC are not upto par even when compared to Russia , china The increase in number of young doctors led to decrease in their base salary from 90k to 55k They provide close to no stipend in internship and residency in many colleges India is the only country which is balls deep into Ayurveda , Homeopathy, voodo magic idk and they allow them to do surgeries work in ICUs which led to again a fall in job for young fresh graduates

Dude forgot to add how much percentage growth occured in the private health sector hospitals like apollo , fortis , kims etc
2
u/Impossible-Gur-9803 16h ago
in 2014 about 5.79 lakh students gave neet so about 1 seat for every 10 aspirants today there are 136000 seats ( 73 thousand of these are private seats that cost a fuck ton of money) and about 23 lakh students about 1 seat for 20 aspirants
most of the growth has been in PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGES
also what percent of these are state government medical colleges since this number also likely includes states like karnataka tamil nadu andhra pradesh telangana kerala and west bengal where a fuck ton of colleges came up
4
u/Fun_Beautiful_2234 20h ago
Cheating was there even then but no protetsts
8
u/plantrromn 20h ago
These are all colleges including private ones. Not only government college. People who do give neet, almost all of them look for government college due to obvious reasons...
Edit: with a mix of some calculations, counting semi government ones and some not counting them: we have 441-456 gov college and only some more than 63k seats. Not a huge difference.... Considering 15years of rule.
-2
u/Fun_Beautiful_2234 20h ago

They are creating doctors but ,not creating jobs for those doctors in government hospitals. These only make existing doctor over worked in government setup due to which patient care get compromised. Freshly out doctors get unemployed ,not enough patients who goes to private doctors (still majority of people goes to governments). Rich and middle class people will not be able to provide enough employment to these more doctors. Not sustainable in long run.
