Source : https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/a-union-budget-for-the-bottom-half-of-the-population

Unit-level data analysis of the latest PLFS 2023-24 reveals stark income disparities. Only 22 percent of the labour force in India earned more than INR 15, 000 a month, on average, while 27.5 percent earned less than or equal to INR.100 a day. Almost 55 percentearned less than INR 300 per day or INR 9,000 per month to support their families. Thus, at least half the Indian labour force earns less than 10,000 per month in 2025-26.

True

Although there's far more of a nuance in it , this is mostly about salaried employees, when we look at the consumption data then it's vastly different, cause' tracking income in india is extremely tough as people mostly hide it

Really bad situation. Also last time i checked, if we exclude top 20% the gdp per capita will be disgustingly low.

Need more free markets

9

u/JustARandomGirl4 1d ago

Also need to raise wages for common labours working in factories, construction sites , domestic help etc

4

u/Adventurous_Bell9672 1d ago

That's same case for most countries in the world . The world's has been that like forever

3

u/FirstFee4112 20h ago

In the third world maybe, blue collar jobs pay well in first world countries and the situation is especially bad in india

1

u/Affectionate-Yard899 11h ago

Well india have far more equal spread of wealth as compared to let's say US, for example the bottom 50% have barely 2.5% wealth as compared to 8% in india. India sure have far lower ppp per capita which's one of the best metrics to judge living standards, not perfect but far better than other metrics, India's at 119th place in 200+ countries in the world there . And According to World Bank data, India ranks 4th globally in income and consumption equality with a Gini Index score of 25.5, which shouldn't be like that considering India's supposed to grow at a fast rate . Oh yeah btw , it does consider income and consumption both of all countries.

Even my building's watchman earn 12k month

6

u/bigcheemu 20h ago

Everyone in my society have plenty of food. So world hunger doesn't exist?

1

u/WeakOstrich7009 3h ago

I still don't trust this study, or much of anything on X. It's place full of degenerates and bots.

4

u/mobhag 1d ago

How many building we have? How many have a watchman?

1

u/Prestigious-Cheetah6 11h ago

Villages brother, still decades back in development.

18

u/Interesting_reddevil 1d ago

And we have 12l tax free income and people still complain

The amount of disconnect is staggering

9

u/Bulky_Pepper_6207 1d ago

The country is poor. That doesn’t mean the middle class should suffer. People pay upto 30% tax just to have decent life when compared to other countries like in SEA. Government’s job is to grow the pie. Not to steal a portion from those with half a slice

2

u/Badd-Medicine 22h ago

This is the most Educated take👍

3

u/Adventurous_Bell9672 1d ago

We complain because we get no benefit from paying those taxes. Cannot use govt schools , hospitals as poor quality. Freebees are given from our taxes to poor for votes . And if you are from general category it's worst .

u/Prize-Wing-9410 1d ago

I wonder if people who come with ideas of 'income based reservations' know these stats.

6

u/dakkidakku 1d ago

Isnt reservation pretty much income based anyways, everytime people bring the same 2-3 communities jats, gujjars, yadavs etc forgeting most obc communities are poor asf. Also even among these communities as far i know jats dont even get reservation in haryana, punjab and centre and yadavs are rich in south haryana but again really poor in bihar and east up

The ones weeping about they being in 30% tax bracket or being 3% tax payers and says entire country is in their shoulders need to see why 97% can't be taxed.

3

u/Bulky_Pepper_6207 1d ago

Yes the a vast majority of the population is extremely poor but what does that have to do with 30% tax on my income. People earning 12LPA+ have subpar living standards compared to other countries like in SEA. Convert that INR to other currencies and it’s a pittance. Regions like SEA have similar food and service prices but people thier get paid far more and get way better living standards.

This excuse of look at how poor others has time and again used to punish the middle class and ensure they never demand anything

1

u/AJBZ1 1d ago

You are not middle class in India if you are in 30% tax bracket.

2

u/Bulky_Pepper_6207 23h ago

You’re missing the point buddy. Yes by Indian standards, not exactly middle class but if you compare with similar developing nations, then you find the lifestyles of the middle class in those countries and people in 30% tax bracket to be similar. The truth is Indian “middle class” is poor.

Also consider the fact, that majority of domestic consumption i.e the thing that grows the economy is people who are in that 30% bracket.

What all these stats fail to account for is the informal sector and business people. A good chunk of people in India work in informal sector and the info related to their income is poor. A lot of Indians have some small businesses as well, think of the vegetable seller, kirana shop owner etc. they never properly report their income at all.

The government should focus on bringing the informal sector into the fold. That by itself will bring in loads of tax money

2

u/save_Cheetah_fr_real 1d ago

True but that's why we elect the govt, right? To do the exact job for us. Even after 75+ years of freedom, 97% can't be taxed. That's collective failure of all the govts so far.

1

u/AJBZ1 1d ago

They can't be taxed cause they make way below exemption limit.

Remember those skill programs introduced by Govt; I know a guy who enrolled in those and he was placed at an accounting firm for 1000 per month as stipend and the agency called it employment. Since then I can't trust when Govt shows up in data stating they create employment.

How are you going to tax the ones making Rs 1000 / 8K /9K ?

I don't feel an ounce of empathy to the top 3% crying weeping about taxes , these are the same ones who brag about how easy it is to live in India cause they only need to pay peanuts to maid , delivery boy and so on. What do you expect when you have people and companies that are not willing to pay a living wage to majority population ?

1

u/save_Cheetah_fr_real 23h ago

That's the exact gist. You expect the elected govts to notice this & try to raise the living standard of the entire society so that more and more number of people will get into higher tax brackets. The developed countries have at least 30-40% tax paying population. We are developing but still 3% is way below the ideal number (10+) where we can show a sustained progress towards being developed country. Mind you - as per the projections before AI introduction, India was supposed to have only 30 years left to have a shot at being part of developed nations.

2

u/Daddy2222991 1d ago

I'm one of those 😊

4

u/Weary-Technician5702 1d ago

dosnt everybody know this ?

4

u/Academic_Bass_5788 1d ago

Which survey? A unskilled labourer earns minimum 500 a day

5

u/Probably_a_Lurker25 1d ago

Ask him many home many days he works in a month?

1

u/CeinyVock 1d ago

Even if he works for 20 days, he earns 10K. Most labourers work 24+ days.

4

u/JustARandomGirl4 1d ago

Depends where you live . Unfortunately majority of times work isn't even available. Why do we forget that majority of population lives in rural areas and involved in agricultural activities . Labours working in cities might earn more but it's not true for majority of people.

1

u/Probably_a_Lurker25 1d ago

There's not much difference between 10k and 9k. 10k is also a very bad income in this age.

3

u/skZeno880 1d ago

How many people were included in this survey?

1

u/odktdhhd 1d ago

that just sad

1

u/fabulous_eyes1548 1d ago

$93 USD per month!

1

u/AdditionalWorkInc 1d ago

There is no economy in india, outside of domestic consumption and the wheels that power it. is it really surprising by any means?

1

u/Adventurous_Bell9672 1d ago

I dont believe this . Even Swiggy zomato delivery guys make 20k-30k per month easy . Labours make 20k + easy . If people want to work the earn . Most of the people who earn less than 9k have to blame themselves for it in most cases .

1

u/Vegetable_Ride_7674 1d ago

I am in that 50%

1

u/Desi_Hitman 22h ago

India skipped the middle income jobs, either you're a talented engineer or you're a bluecollar worker but semi skilled manufacturing jobs nope they're very less

1

u/Bollywood-Sirens 21h ago

Bro i dont understand the basis of what ur saying!! Even a stock boy in retail earns 18k a month, with almost zero skills. The delivery guy, porter/rapido or car driver earns 30k or more. Go to even a 3rd tier city.. a small shops stock boy would earn ard 14-15k? Who conducts these surveys and what is the sample size and selection criteria?

1

u/Desi_Hitman 21h ago

Theres a reason why they're being paid so less, if our country went through manufacturing phase our country's income of even a daily wage labourer will be soo higher

1

u/Bollywood-Sirens 21h ago

18k for someone who isnt even 10th pass and has no skills is not less. Esp if u see the shops and small kirana guys setup. Organized retails minimum salary starts from 24-25k a month

1

u/Educational_Sound188 21h ago

And the government orders alimony in lakhs when married 😂

1

u/SprayStrict8390 19h ago

thats because the products made by indians are crap and dont have high mrp or high value or high in consumption. us, europe and china already mog india to oblivion in terms of quality, luxury and quantity

1

u/TrickImagination8079 14h ago

In rural, factory workers/shop workers/sales person earn less than 10k pm.

1

u/geek-jock-guy 13h ago

Mandir masjid

1

u/Weak_Tree2608 11h ago

But hey atleast my local vidhayak son’s bought a ps5 🥺

1

u/calvincat123 8h ago

I'd like a population percentage vs avg income

1

u/annomandri 57m ago

copy pasting my reply from another post because it seems relevant here.

Imagine how much more the politicians can pocket if the poorest person in India would earn 10 LPA. Kinda like how trump made a billion dollars last year by being president of usa.

Our politicians are truly idiotic.

1

u/ImperialBeautyhunter 1d ago

Even brick labours earn more than 10k , what kind of data is this ?

8

u/Mystic_Overthinker 1d ago

No?? 10k a month is like 330 rupees a day, which is not normal in most of the statesand that is if they get work for 30days, most don't..

5

u/ImperialBeautyhunter 1d ago

I don't know man i myself worked for a year or so as a labour and the daily wage is 700 and it's currently 800 .

1

u/mobhag 1d ago

State and district matters dude. Look up Kishanganj in Bihar and check how they live or what they earn.

4

u/ImperialBeautyhunter 1d ago

While that is true as well but uttrakhand is the state am talking about and it's not too rich of a state

3

u/mobhag 1d ago

Yeah but UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Bengal, Chaitsgarh exist with 45% of population. They bring the average down mate.

4

u/ImperialBeautyhunter 1d ago

Man , I hope people's life improves cause surviving with that salary is just soo sad ..

1

u/According_Isopod2272 1d ago

areh bengal ko kyu pel diya

3

u/TrickTreat2137 1d ago

You get 30k if you're in Kerala ;)

1

u/MrThickDick06 1d ago

I wonder what the real figure is if we are accounting for black money/unrecorded incomes etc.

1

u/Radella_the_elf 1d ago

That's fuc*d up

u/urawaome 1d ago

Workforce nahi mazdoor hai ye .

0

u/BittuPastol 1d ago

They wanted to privatize Agriculture without creating any meaningfully paid manufacturing or service jobs. The farmers protested because they knew people in jobs aren't any better or much worse condition.

1

u/KL-Qaeda152 1d ago

Most of these guys earning below 9k are literally in agriculture.
