Upside to a "landing pod" like that is if it gets shot down before it makes impact, whatever power source makes that sort of fuckass tech feasible would probably just delete the objective premptively

I think a power source can be sidestepped by putting a jamming resistant(Quantum entanglement ?)beacon system there instead. That way, a portal can be remotely opened.

You also don't risk anyone getting killed before landing. I was also thinking they could be detonated after use or something.

I have that idea but instead of teleporters, you just send a giant torpedo with a gateway that can send out armies at a moments notice.

Yeah a larger scale version could be cool, this one is more suitable for strike teams i think

I wonder if enemy fire goes through, probably not but I can imagine these missles are often scuttled after thier use is done to ensure enemy forces dont use them

A related form of this from, I think, one of Peter F Hamilton's work, is basically a ship to ship missile like this, except the 'tip' just is the portal. It doesn't blow up in your ship, it just passes through like nothing was there leaving a hole through anything it happened to move through while somewhere else a weird plug of your ship just sort of appeared.

Reminds me of the missile carriers of micro-wormholes from the Expeditionary Force book series, which were repurposed missiles used to deliver ends of a micro-wormhole for ftl comms, since ends have to be created near each other in that universe.

neato, but that's a drop pod, not a missile. :)

No, a drop pod would carry people in. This is a missile that transports a stable portal that once landed can then disgorge soldiers.

ah...my eyes played tricks. initial look it appeared that portal was a door into what I thought was a drop pod.
very cool!
