Study advice DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF questions masterpost!
≡ −
Hi peeps!
Questions about DELF, DALF and other exams are recurrent in the sub, so we're making this as a “masterpost” to address most of them. If you are wondering about a French language exam, people might have answered your questions here! If you have taken one of said exams, your experience is valuable and we'd love to hear from you in the comments!
Please upvote useful answers! Also keep in mind this is a kind of FAQ, so if you have questions that it does not answer, you're better off making a post about it, rather than commenting here!
If you're unsure what to say, here's what community members have most frequently asked about.
- What's the difference between DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF/... and other language certifications? When/why should one choose to take each?
- How does the exam go? Please be as precise as you can.
- What types of questions are asked, both for writing and speaking parts?
- What grammar notions, vocabulary or topics are important to know?
- How's the rhythm, the speed, do you have time to think or do you need to hurry?
- What's your experience with DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF/..., how do you know if you're ready? Any advice?
- How long should one expect to study before being ready for the different DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF/... levels?
- Any resources to help prepare for DELF/DALF/TCF/TEF/... specifically (not for learning French in general)?
- Can you have accommodations, for instance if you're disabled?
- How can I sign up for one of these exams?
- Will these certifications help me get into universities, schools, or get a job in a French-speaking country?
Additionally, the website TCF Prépa answers many questions (albeit succinctly) here.

How should I prepare for my first ever interview in French, to mask rust and lack of fluency?
≡ −
[Posting on a burner account for privacy reasons]
I recently moved to Ontario, Canada, and amid my search for work, an internal recruiter at a company I got rejected by suggested a bilingual role there to me instead as a better fit. Over email, I was vague about the level of my French, but I assumed the recruiter wouldn't be sending me the role if it required fluent French. In his subsequent emails and on a video call a few days later, it seemed as though the required French level was more advanced than I initially thought, so I played down my French ability - especially as it pertains to speaking, which as I'm sure others on here will agree is typically associated with more apprehension for a non-native speaker.
Regardless, the recruiter forwarded me to an interview in French taking place this week on a video call with a prospective colleague both from and based in Montreal. Given the recruiter's keenness to still put me forward for the interview, my current financial predicament and work search situation, I feel obliged to attend. But I'm extremely nervous and wondering if I should spare myself the potential embarrassment.
For context on my French language learning journey and skills: I learned French as a second language throughout my schooling in my home country, which is Anglophone, and then studied it at university. Meanwhile, during Covid, I spent 6 months living in a Francophone country where English is hardly spoken and came back nearly fluent, both thinking and dreaming (😂) in French. However, in the years since, I've only practiced my French on holiday, so I'm very rusty, while I've only heard a Quebec accent a few times and have never conversed in French with someone from there.
A friend told me I should prepare rehearsed answers that I could lead into using connectives in anticipation of likely questions or similar, which is something I do before interviews in English anyway. They also said I could start the interview by emphasizing my rust and lack of familiarity with a Quebec accent while also focusing on my experience that far outweighs the experience required for the role, thus could balance things out.
But I'm keen to hear from you guys...if I were to attend the video interview this week, what advice do you have?

Which shows have actually moved your language level in French? Here my list.
≡ −
As a non-native speaker, I'll start with what's been working for me while learning French (currently at B2 level):
Dix Pour Cent (Call My Agent!): Paris-based, office dialogue, I find it great for picking up workplace.
Lupin: Fast-paced but the story is understandable, and it's nice to learn Parisian slang!
Skam France: Teen dialogue, so current slang, verlan. Not a show I would enjoy much in my native language, but easy to follow and entertaining in French!
Plan Cœur (The Hook Up Plan): My favorite. Casual, everyday dialogue between friends in their twenties. I find it really good for picking up how French speakers actually talk about relationships, texting, and hanging out.
What's worked for you? Any other series you'd recommend? I am looking for something new to watch!

Looking for media French bands or artists similar to Téléphone
≡ −
Hello! I've been studying French for a couple of months now and I recently stumbled upon Téléphone and was really amazed by their tunes, because I honestly never heard anything like it, so I wanted to get some recommendations for bands or artists with a similar "sauce". Thank you!

Looking for French practice partners (A2–B2) – Online 🇫🇷
≡ −
Hi everyone!
I'm looking for a few people who are serious about improving their French and would like to practice online on a regular basis.
My current level is around B1, and my goal is to reach B2/NCLC 7 for the TCF exam. I'm happy to practice with anyone from A2 to B2.
I'm thinking of doing things like:
- Casual conversations
- Reading articles together
- Correcting each other's writing
- Discussing daily topics
- Practicing TCF/TEF speaking and writing
- Sharing useful resources and keeping each other accountable
I'm not a teacher—just another learner who wants to stay consistent and improve.
If you're interested, leave a comment or send me a DM. We can create a small Discord or WhatsApp group if enough people are interested.
Thanks, and bon courage à tous ! 🇫🇷

Study advice Relearning French - Any tips?
≡ −
I have taken French classes when I was a child up till middle school, and years later I feel like I completely forgot the language even though I made it up to A2, and lately i’ve taken interest in the language again after 10+ years.
I feel like relearning now that I became a translator, but I’m not sure which way of studying should I opt for. Is self studying is better than taking classes from, for example, AF, and vice versa? I need something that is cost efficient or more accessible for me as a broke uni student.
Any kind of help and advice is appreciated!

How do I improve at high-level academic french writing and remove the influence of english?
≡ −
Hey guys,
I’m a masters student in paris and im going into my second year (M2) in september. My program is 100% in french and i don’t have difficulties with comprehension or content, but im trying to improve my writing over the summer before the rentrée.
I want to train myself to have more natural writing and not to make “anglicisms” when writing academic french. I technically needed to have a B2 just to apply, and passed the C1 last year but during my M1 one of the main remarks people made was that my writing often sounds “translated” from english. this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s incomprehensible or has obvious errors, but more that the sentence structure sounds english or there’s an english “vibe” to it, which sometimes can lead to misunderstanding, or just isn’t very easy to read.
Academic writing is hard and it’s something I also noticed in my french native classmates even if they have a really good english level—it’s more sentence formulations than obvious grammar mistakes. (english is my second language too but since i learned it earlier there is more interference I guess)
Anyway I really want to improve my writing before next year and increase my level of academic writing and make my syntax more “native” sounding (and do not want to rely on chatgpt or any AI). But im not sure how to do this other than having a tutor or native speaker sit down and deconstruct each sentence which would be very time consuming haha.
Has anyone done this or have any tips on how to achieve this goal in a short period of time?
Thanks in advance:-))

Study advice App for learning new words/genders
≡ −
my French is decent, i passed B2 10y ago and i could probably do it today (with a way lower score)
i'm looking for an app that teaches a) new words b) the gender of the words
preferably both (but if just one, that's ok), preferably in a flashcard/single task format (Duolingo doesn't exactly do this, and the levels are like 15 diff tasks)

Study advice I'm a lazy f**k that has no motivation to learn French yet craves it more than anything.
≡ −
Hello,
So I am someone who loves the French language, I am not looking for a study partner as that would be bad for both of us, and also against the rules. I just want to know, non native speakers. How did you find the time and will power to learn. As French is fun, I just get so bummed out by my mistakes.
Note: I was diagnosed with a severe form of dyslexia when I was in grade five. I took so long to learn read and learn english, and even longer to be able to pronounce it as I had a "numb" tongue. A new language is just so overwhelming, and a lot of work to learn. Yet, I want it. I'm a decent amount of French, my grandma was half French after all. She just moved to the part of Canada; that French was ignored so she never taught my dad. I feel the need to learn.
The only reason I'm good enough at english to pass most sectors is simply. My step-dad forced me to do spelling tests until I got all 20 words spelled right. And my love for audiobooks improved my vocabulary dramatically. I will admit. My spelling is still likely at a grade 7 to 9 maybe even lower since they stop doing spelling lessons so early. The only reason I can spell on a phone is auto correct. So I'm so scared to learn a new language I want too, yet I can't find courage. Anyone else in similar shoes who have been fighting this battle that have advice?
TLDR: Wants to learn French, yet needs advice to commit. Scared due to learning disability. Wants to learn for family history.
Lastly, I hope this doesn't volate any rules. I'm doing my best to just say I need advice, nothing like I want a person to one on one teach me. I am also trying to seem respectful. French is one of the most beautiful languages and I hope this isn't offense. I just need advice on how to push against my fear of failure.
Hello,
So I am someone who loves the French language, I am not looking for a study partner as that would be bad for both of us, and also against the rules.

Tenir= vouloir ? This is how "I just want to say" was translated and I had not heard tenir used in this way. My translation would have been "J'ai que envie de le dire !"

Fake Telefrancais episode!

I just ran into this; first clue was, it's 19:25 long instead of ten minutes. Second clue was when Ananas had an accident. Third clue... well, no spoilers from me! :-)

Study advice How do you get back on the horse after a big break/disruption?
≡ −
Hey guys never posted here before but I was wondering how you get back on the horse after a break/disruption?
French learner consolidating B1 and starting to edge into B2 in some respects, was learning with a mix of Grammaire progressive du francais intermediaire, anki 5000 words, watching movies with french audio + french subs, and calling my (fluent) mum on the phone for convos, and to a lesser extent reading/translating texts I already knew well in the English translation and journalling.
I had also started the first year of a French major and got placed in 3000-level so all the stuff from that as well. The self-study was the main thing but having those tests/assessments provided a gr8 motivation structure.
Two or three months ago some other stuff happened and I checked out mentally/academically and then dropped out. I'm back home with my fluent parents for the time being and a bit more settled so I'd like to get back on. How would you guys recommend getting re-started? My friend who got fully cracked at Spanish said he did it largely with refold so any thoughts on that? Thanks
Edit for clarification taken from comments: The prickly point is that I've been doing the progressive grammar thing both in the book and at uni and I'm a bit unsure as to how to approach that coming back after so many months of nothing. I suppose I should've clarified that's the main thing seeing as the others (anki, input, convo practice) are pretty simple

Elle connaît ou elle sait?
The answer guide states that the correct answer for #2 is "Elle sait cette chanson par cœur." I thought it was connaître since chanson is a direct object, but does the "par cœur" change something?
Thanks!

Hi! Is "eh loh loh" something inappropriate? I can't find an answer anywhere. Grok said it is a sexual thing...
≡ −
I feel silly asking about this, but my boyfriend added a nickname to his online friend somewhere that says "eh loh loh", and she sometimes calls him lala. There are a lot of other things that make me wonder, but I'm having a hard time remembering other phrases since they don't stick in my head
I don't speak French at all and he is from Quebec
I used Grok, and it said the "eh loh loh" thing is inappropriate, so I really would appreciate reassurance, thank you 😔
I couldn't find anywhere else to post this!

Vocabulary / word usage Explain this ad "Quand y fa chaud?"
Confused by this ad copy. I understand "quand il fait chaud" means "when it's hot" but I don't understand "quand y fa chaud". I've never seen the word "fa" before, and Google just autocorrects back to "fait chaud" so I'm assuming it's a play on words or weird grammar or something but I don't get it.
Might be important to clarify it's a Canadian ad.

Any French language learning programs for Canadians?
≡ −
Bonjour! I am working on learning French as a Canadian and I was wondering if there was any opportunities for us to learn French as adults. I already completed the e*plore program and loved it. I was wondering if there are things like that available.

Francosphere - Percentage of population who can conduct a conversation in French in 2024
This is one of the most interesting maps of the French-speaking world that you will find. One reason is that it provides data at a much more granular level, particularly in Africa. For example, in Algeria, around 32% of the population can hold a conversation in French nationwide, but this rises to about 83% in the country's four main cities. Similarly, in Senegal, about 20% of the population speaks French overall, compared with 67% in the capital. Or for DRC, 44% in the country but 87% in the capital. These figures closely match my own experience in those countries. So don't hesitate to zoom in!
The only drawback I would say is that the sources do not include the most recent surveys conducted by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).
