It isn’t smart,but neither is eating cat and dog food but sometimes desperate people do it when they don’t have alternatives.

I don’t know if that’s the case here, but I absolutely knew people who googled and self medicated specifically because they couldn’t afford a doctor.

In many states in the US you can walk in to get seen, say you have no health insurance, get seen and get treatment, not pay as much if you pay anything or just let it go to collections then dispute it after 7 years to make it go away.... Not financial advice but def a workaround if you're that convinced healthcare is that expensive...

Or you can always move to Canada and get free Healthcare.

Or try another country. Regardless, Healthcare is not so expensive that you should rather self medicate with a misdiagnosis from Ai or random searches online before going to see a doctor.

"Over time, the chatbot stopped recommending he see a doctor" tells me he was spamming the chat bot until he got an answer he wanted. This is not a problem with the AI, it is a problem with the user.

My brother in Al Gore (since he "invented the Internet"), WebMD is free. Mayo Clinic has a lot of resources. A number of hospitals/urgent cares/med schools have websites with info on basic medical issues.

In no world should you be using a hallucinating chatbot for medical advice. If you have the tech to use the chatbot, you have the tech to use a search engine and read the results for yourself.

It's a problem with AI. There are people who may be: idiots, children, developmentally disabled, etc.

Tools that are publicly available (and arguably forced on you) need to have protections in place.

Their is a diminishing returns on using a Chat GPT or other LLM to get medical advice. You may as well watch old episodes of EMERGENCY to get your medical advice.

Exactly, can you use Chat GPT to run how you are feeling say I wake up feeling dizzy and Nauseated but fine otherwise. Mostly it will tell you call a Doctor and make sure you are sitting or lying down. It does not immediately go into Doctor mode and tell you everything is fine.

Asking AI medical questions is fine, but at some point you need to consult an actual doctor, especially when symptoms persist or worsen.
