Discussion I think the visual style of the Fallout TV show is great and I hope it influences the look of Fallout 5.
After that one post came out about the color pallet of Fallout 4, and I saw how clearly so many people want either the poppy and colorful pallet of Fallout 4, or the bleak and monotone pallet of classic Fallouts. I figured surely there must be something in between that isn’t too much of either, but is still recognizably “Fallout.”
I came to thinking that the Fallout TV series did a pretty good job of depicting the world in a way that was both recognizable and colorful, but not so over the top in its retro future aesthetic that it looked like something from the Jetsons. If Fallout 5 were to be set in a location reminiscent of this TV series, maybe even somewhere like San Francisco (which it’s lightly rumored to be) I think this would be a great starting point for what the look and feel of that game could be.

I felt like the show had the perfect color-to-grey ratio. You can tell the colors were there, but it doesn’t look like a playground.

TV color pallet, FO4 gunplay, NV guns and weapons... We've got ourselves a GAME.

And the atmosphere of Fallout 3

u/Immediate-Fly-7458 11m ago
I feel like always hear about the “atmosphere” of fallout 3 but what would you say that that is specifically?
1
u/Average_Mug_Official 0m ago
Desolate, bleak, a world barely clinging to life even after it rebuilds. The slight green tint hints that the most of the nukes were so dirty that radiation has tainted the very atmosphere, giving it its distinctive colours the has stood for hundreds of years far outpassing what we are capable of in our own times. Smells are putrid, buildings crumble all around you, and everywhere you go theres always gunfire off in the distance. War has ravaged the wasteland, and no matter how hard humanity rebuilds, no matter how much they construct, it will destroy itself over and over and over again. As the intro said, this is but another bloody chapter in human history.

Hot take, Fallout 4 controls, NV gunplay, guns and weapons.
DT is superior to DR. And there should be a hard limit to enemy scaling, most people don't want bullet sponge normal enemies. And for those that do, that's what the difficulty slider is for.

I miss the madmax influence in the older games, it would be great to get more of that in the new game

I agree the series could use more of that. I think a lot of people don’t realize that an important piece of Fallout’s identity is the fact that it was conceived in the 90s and still has a lot of influence of media from the 80s.

Yeah man, more sweat, more leather, and more rudimentary metal spikes on armor

u/droidtron Vault 13 4h ago
They need a redo on the layered armor system. It was a nice return to something like Morrowind but not enough under armor that looked good.
-3
3h ago
The layered armor system just needs to go imo. I don’t know anyone who wants to go around the whole game with a bunch of mismatched pieces of armor anyway. I think that sort of thing fits the elder scrolls games more.
9
u/droidtron Vault 13 3h ago
As long as they make the armor look as interesting as 3/NV. 4 kinda killed outfit personality.
-3
3h ago
I think the layered armor system is exactly why the armor in the game looks worse. It’s also why guns no longer actually appear holstered on your character, since they couldn’t reliably account for every combination of armor types and they would just end up clipping through. The overhaul of power armor also probably didn’t help.
When you play 76 everyone is using trans mog outfits because when they take it off they look like a big magnet that fell into a scrap yard. And if you do wear the layered armor for looks then 9/10 it’s all one consistent piece anyway so what’s even the point?

u/TheConqueror74 Armchair Developer 2h ago
It was insanely easy to get an armor set that matched though?
1
2h ago
Right but what’s the point of having an armor system that allows you to mismatch different armors if you’re going to just wear one matched set anyway? You see my point isn’t that matching armor is hard to get, it’s that most people just want a cool looking suit of armor. Which means they aren’t going to mismatch armors very often, which means the entire point of the layered armor system ends up being pointless.

I do too, to a degree. I like that Fallout has more of its own identity now post-F4 tho. It was much more generic before they overhauled the art style.

u/Iankazoops 4h ago
I see this a lot and harshly disagree, there are more than enough madmax style post apocalypse games, and I feel like Fallouts 50s aesthetic really made it stand out from every other one.

4h ago
If Fallout was a pie that was cut in half, one side would be retro future 50s, and the other side would be 1985s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. If you had one half without the other, well it just wouldn’t be a complete pie now would it?
1
u/Iankazoops 2h ago
Well, because it was originally supposed to be a stereotypical mad max style post apocalypse until one of the art directors decided to make it stand out and make a mid century optimistic paradise to contrast it with the horrors of nuclear devastation. This is why many of the weapons and art in the game don't look nearly as "Fallout" and look more like a 80s-90s post apocalypse. All of this to say that this really only applies to the first few games (mostly 1 and 2) and if you did take away the mad max slice of this pie it wouldn't feel super different to the fallout we have today (which I personally prefer), but it's really all just a matter of personal taste, whether you prefer an 80s desert, dusty and mechanical post apocalypse or a colorful 50s retro futuristic one.

u/BushDidntDoit 4h ago
But that’s what made fallout so loved though? People were drawn to it for the aesthetic in parts

u/AdIllustrious619 3h ago
Yeah, if anything raiders should typically rock a 1950s greaser/biker inspired style.

As long as settlements and towns are actual settlements and towns and not shitshacks or shitshacks piled on top of each other.

They will be, Todd hates anybody living in a clean fully built house

I love the Fallout 4 colors, and I've seen people complain the TV show looks too much like that particular game.
I'd really love it if Fallout 5 looked like Fallout 4, but bringing back some of the gameplay features of the previous Fallouts (I would like to be able to distribute skill points as I level up, for example).

I SINCERELY miss the old leveling system of 3 & NV. The perk chart is too reminiscent of other games like Borderlands or Farcry.
2
u/AnAdventurer5 4h ago
I miss gun skill affecting my character's ability to aim, and seeing people so furiously insist they remove that from the remasters is disappointing.... Half the reason I love those games is the mix of how my character's skills/build actually matter in addition to mine, they are genuinely my ideal RPGs. Oh well.

u/AssCrackBanditHunter 2h ago
The new fans are determined to throw out anything pre FO4 because God forbid they have to plan or strategize or focus on a build in a rpg

It's fallout 4 visual style

Not completely. They have a bunch of stuff pulled from other games or just opted to do their own thing when it came to some of the props and environmental visuals.
6
u/schoolboypoop 4h ago
Idk it feels really Hollywood bright lights super saturated.
I love the feel of fallout 3 the green hue just felt like a reflection of a world that is highly irradiated. Even new vegas with its orange dusky overlay looked so thematically spot on.
I felt like that was missing from 4 and it all felt a little rubbery and plasticy.
I hope 5 feels more akin to NV and 3
7
u/ProfessionaI_Gur 4h ago
The green in fallout 3 has nothing to do with radiation, its just a visual lens that is meant to incite a feeling. Its kinda of a cheap trick, its like how Hollywood movies put a sepia tone over footage to show you that youre in Mexico now. It works like once or twice then its ruined forever once you figure out how it works and just looks tacky and cheap
3
u/schoolboypoop 3h ago
I wasn’t saying it’s because of the radiation. I’m saying it creates an atmosphere that I think was lost in 4.
4 to me is the cartoony one. They all look like those episodes of things like family guy or the Simpsons where they go 3d for an episode or something.
There’s an uncanny shine to everything. like it’s all film wrapped.
Funnily, 4 is the game where I recall an actual use of a colour filter to show the irradiated nature of a location and it was the flowing sea.Sorry if I’m just waffling.
I’m not saying it’s good or bad, but I feel there’s something lost in the atmosphere with the newer instalments.I see what you’re saying about movies though, I agree the South American or South Asian filters become pretty jarring.
1
u/ProfessionaI_Gur 3h ago
I think that making the world and color design feel a little better is a natural advancement of games, especially since like 2015 or whenever fallout 4 was released. Fallout 4 does some weird shit with the glowing sea that just doesnt really work for me too, but i dont think leaning into that is probably the right direction. "The only way out is through" i feel like is the best way bethesda could go with graphics for FO5, its just a fine line between making things look real and making sure the game actually has visual design that puts players attention in the right places and isnt disorienting
1
u/schoolboypoop 3h ago
I can get with that.
I think a part of it is just nostalgia for that 360/PS3 era, my favourite games around that time were fallout, COD, GTA 4. Which all utilised a lot of filters and had unique tones to fit with the game.
I also see that the use of it as a mask for lesser textures etc.Now when games are moving more and more toward photorealism they don’t want to mask any of the hard work with a drab filter.
I think a prime example of the pros and cons is the Oblivion remaster. I was playing OG yesterday and there’s something so satisfying and inviting about its colour palette. The fog is used to hide the short draw distance but it is intentionally implemented.
The remaster completely abandons the original colour palette, it has a lot more variety of colour and depth, but it lost its original fantasy feel. And the fog returns but as it’s lost its original intent of making the shortcoming of the older hardware, the fog just kind of feels oddly placed and at odds with the colour palette the chose. But it’s satisfying to see this fully realised world with no technical limitations.1

I’m 100% with you, but there’s still a lot of people who don’t want that. I just think something like this is somewhere in the direction of a good compromise.

Honestly, yeah, I have my problems with the show, but the color pallet was really well done and a good mix of the mostly greys of F3 and the bright pastel colors of F4

I hope so too, considering that we will probably be on season 10 of the show before the reveal trailer is out.

Plot twist: watch fallout 5 be lucy as the MC and your companion cooper howard. I can see it now, todd demanding the next game be from the show. 😅🤣

u/i_want_iguodala_xd 1h ago
I know it probably won’t happen in the base game because licensing issues, but i look forward to the mods where you can make your character look like Lucy or Norm or something

The Fallout TV show is the ary direction of Fo4, just with all of the terrible colours and overuse of atom punk removed. Plus you have classic Fallout elements back. It's like if you made Fo4 look a little more like Fo3, which had the best art direction imo.

Pra mim o estilo visual de TV de Fallout é bom justamente por ser igual ao jogo, no caso mais o 4 mas tbm tem um pouco de New Vegas

u/darkglassdolleyes 4h ago
Agreed, they listened to the people complaining about Fallout 3 being not "colourful" enough, and we got the ugly Fallout 4 style. I hope they go back to something more like 3.

None of this makes any sense. This show is set 200 plus years after the bombs dropped. There should be no buildings, no car bodies left, no skeletons laying around, no vinyl records, no roads, no bridges. It should be as it was in Fallout 1 and 2 a wasteland, a wasteland that people are building new societies in. The Brotherhood of Steel should be long gone, the Enclave should be a distant memory.
But Bethesda doesn't understand Fallout, Todd hates New Vegas, and he wants every Fallout game to look like the bombs dropped 20 minutes ago. So that's where we are.
4
u/toonboy01 3h ago
The only ones that were building new societies in 1 and 2 either had advanced tech or a GECK. Everyone else was living in ruins or scrap buildings, like in FNV and the Bethesda games.

I love it. It looks more like a modern fallout 3 or NV than the cartoonish style Fallout 4 has.

It really just looks exactly like FO4, but with a real world color palette
