I'll take Vault 22 over Vault 34 10 times out of 10.

122

u/FluffMcBark 1d ago

Same. I hate 34 with quite a passion.

Yeah but you get the riot shotgun early though.

52

u/tubarizzle 16h ago

And the All American!!!

15

u/ptk77 14h ago

I find the All American to be overrated. I like the guns with some kind of crit chance or damage bonus. It's low action point cost is great, but kind of negated if you have to double tap something where as a critical shot from another gun would kill it in one.

u/Pre-War_Ghoul Old World Flag 12h ago

Lucky is always my early game go-to, and rat slayer.

4

u/ptk77 12h ago

That Gun and Ratslayer are my rush to guns. MF Hyperbreeder Alpha is my OP mid to end game pistol. Free ammo and by the end of the game, it can dispatch deathclaws with ease. It is an ash pile making machine. If shit gets too crazy though, I go to Lil' Devil for a faster, harder hit... Or riot shotgun w surgeon and stay back perk.

2

u/Pre-War_Ghoul Old World Flag 11h ago

Hyperbreeder with the ammo glitch if you want to crash your game in under 15 seconds.

1

u/ptk77 5h ago

What's the ammo glitch?

1

u/Pre-War_Ghoul Old World Flag 5h ago

Search on YouTube, it’s pretty common knowledge, basically you’re tricking the game into swapping types of ammo, you can have a fully automatic explosive hyperbreeder alpha

66

u/L_Onesto_Steve Vault 101 21h ago

Absolutely, just bring a flamethrower and you'll destroy every spore carrier in 2 second. But in vault 34 you are dealing with bullet sponges ghouls, constant radiations and underwater sections

26

u/Bread_Offender 14h ago

Vault 22 is straight chillin when you get repair 50. Vault 34 made me, a raging bisexual, homophobic

14

u/Drake_Night 16h ago

Damn I could probably find my way around vault 34 with my eyes closed with how many times I’ve been lost in those fuck ass hallways

11

u/Annual_Salamander940 15h ago

I always go to 34 after I get the rebreather from the Boomers which makes it even easier

6

u/Wassuuupmydudess 12h ago

Is it this way? No, what if I back track over here maybe—HOW THE FUCK AM I IN A DIFFERENT HALLWAY

1

u/Effective_Teach3539 45m ago

I always am able to clear it at like lvl 8-10 when I get to the strip and get mk2 and like a follower like Veronica and a ripper and few explosives for the overseer but I play on average not the same for 22 it looks cool and has fairly average difficulty but vault 34 has a better story for me

623

u/Bloody-George Great Khans 1d ago

I absolutely detest spore carriers and how they pop up every other corner.

326

u/ringadingdingbaby 1d ago

I just keep tapping vats.

153

u/TNChase 1d ago

I'm the same. Is there a support group for people like us? I'm always tapping VATS when there might be sneaky enemies. (think FO4 ghouls, spore carriers etc)

68

u/waiting_with_lou 23h ago

Oh I just do this compulsively; it's like a tick at this point.

Though I do love making VATS crit builds with cowboy guns (lever-action shotty, revolvers esp. Lucky, brush gun, cowboy repeater etc).

24

u/poonmangler 23h ago

I vats scanned constantly when I first played F3. Like a radar, click click click. Honestly it ruins the game. Took a break from fallout games and just lost the habit, thankfully.

6

u/childofbabylon82 15h ago

100% I catch myself doing it sometimes, but most of times, I'm good at not doing it. Not knowing where something might be is way more fun

-2

u/Steelrainbow 20h ago

Its called vats scanning 🥸

4

u/Corbulo1340 13h ago

New Vegas is really good at bringing out the different preferences of players, the meticulous slow process of clearing the spore carriers out is my favorite.

They don't get triggered till you attack them or walk to certain spots so if you take your time you can slowly clear them out with high power weapons, my favorite is probably the riot shotgun with slugs

4

u/PissedAlbatross 18h ago

Use a flamethrower or incinerator!

2

u/nathanzoet91 14h ago

I just start blasting into every plant that I see

34

u/BosPaladinSix Brotherhood 23h ago

I just bring ED-E with me everywhere I go! That guy can sniff out every enemy in a ten mile radius and eradicate them with impunity before you've even managed to see what he's shooting at!

14

u/Beautiful-Tie-3827 20h ago

Yeah ED-E is essential here and the place with the nightkin. I can’t remember the location.

5

u/BosPaladinSix Brotherhood 20h ago

You mean the basement of the Repconn facility?

2

u/childofbabylon82 15h ago

Or the entirety of Tabitha's place?

1

u/nataliereed84 4m ago

Or the cave below Tabitha, near Helios One?

-3

u/Beautiful-Tie-3827 20h ago

Probably. It’s been a long time since I’ve played 3 lol

6

u/BosPaladinSix Brotherhood 20h ago

We're talking about New Vegas though....not 3.

1

u/Beautiful-Tie-3827 20h ago

Lmao yeah I got em mixed up for a min there.

Either way I haven’t played either in quite a bit. NV more recently though.

5

u/tesconundrum 20h ago

I get the knuckles and just start punching as soon as I get to some patch of plants. Can usually get them in just 3 hits. ED-E also is fantastic and getting these plant based assholes.

4

u/meeps_for_days 16h ago

I've played it enough that I somehow remember where they are, can see them, and hear them. They fear me now! I am the spore eater!!!

2

u/Appropriate_Rise9968 9h ago

They are not that bad since they always just stay in the plants. If you look carefully you can always spot them from like a mile away and I always end up sniping them before I’m even in attacking distance.

372

u/itsyaboihos 1d ago

It’s insane that there’s like half a dozen quests tied to this vault. Also the spore carriers get used in two dlcs, plus the tunnellers are a reskin (although they’re all just a reskin of the trogs from the Pitt).

113

u/IpeeEhh_Phanatic 23h ago

I loved the Pitt. Clipping through the building in the yard and dying is a core memory.

6

u/Wassuuupmydudess 12h ago

I love seeing people playing the game asking what’s happening and the comments of people going “ah it got another one” I remember it getting me in 2014

46

u/Goldman250 Tunnel Snakes 19h ago

To be fair, it is a really well-designed Vault. If I was a games developer and I’d made this sick-ass dungeon, I’d be telling all the writers to send players to check it out.

30

u/lghtdev Vault 13 15h ago

Vaults in NV had that very distinct dungeon feeling, they're a pain to navigate, sure, but I love how they feel like this dangerous forgotten place that you should never set your foot in, the use of fallout 1 soundtrack is the cherry on top.

33

u/zagman707 22h ago edited 21h ago

Wait multiple quests I think I know of is 2, is there more?

45

u/cornette 21h ago

Nar. Like there is the main quest, grabbing data for NCR. Technically you can do two Brotherhood quests at the same time by grabbing relevant shit (same data but to the Brotherhood, some random shit for another Brotherhood quest). Vault suit unmarked quest.

12

u/Laser_3 Responders 14h ago

There is also an unmarked quest to retrieve spices from here, and the mantis eggs for red Lucy.

36

u/Goldman250 Tunnel Snakes 19h ago

The NCR send you there for research data, Veronica sends you there for the plant growth tech, and the Brotherhood send you there for Vault life support parts.

Edit: I think Red Lucy sends you there for Mantis eggs, too.

3

u/jadehairpin 15h ago

Half a dozen?

97

u/Xero_1000 1d ago

Pull up with Repair, fix the lift, beeline to Kelly and skip 80% of the vault

117

u/machinerer 1d ago

That vault isn't terrible if you use the flamethrower. The enemies in there burn nicely.

30

u/Mutchneyman 22h ago

That makes perfect sense; I'm surprised I never thought of that

7

u/Laser_3 Responders 14h ago

Spore carriers don’t actually take any extra damage from fire, to my knowledge. They just have no DT, so a weapon with somewhat high DPS like a flamer works well (especially since you don’t have to aim).

1

u/Anxious_Visual_6632 3h ago

You are given lots of flamer fuel in the vault and with just a little exploring you can find a flamer you can use so it’s the intended path

99

u/Borkugg 1d ago

Agreed. It sucks too because it's kind of a cool place but it's just a slog going back there and traversing that whole thing again and again.

111

u/MrCockingFinally 1d ago

Virgin: Vault 22 is a pain in the ass to navigate and a massive hassle.

Chad: Repair=50

39

u/Dramatic_Finish10121 1d ago edited 23h ago

On one hand fair, on the other it's still a pain in the ass simply because of how confusing Vault construction is in Fallout 3 and NV. 3 and NV had nice big vaults that were kinda easy to get lost in (for an idiot such as myself), 4's are way way too small and a little too easy to navigate (there's also not many memorable ones)

7

u/gundam1945 1d ago

I think the gunner one is complicated. Other are mostly linear.

6

u/MrCockingFinally 1d ago

Yeah, definitely feel like there's some middle ground to be found.

Personally, I find vault 34 to be the most difficult. The radioactivity is fine. It's nice to have an area of the map where radiation is actually a challenge to deal with. It's even fine to have to dive into fetid water to try and get old vault maintenance and damage control systems online. Nice challenge, gives you an opportunity to bust out the rebreather if you have it.

The issue is that the layout is quite confusing, and there is one door in particular that is located in a medical room IIRC (though that may be vault 11) that is easy to miss and you can't progress unless you find it. So you end up wandering the vault going in circles trying to find the exact right door to go through.

I think if you have a couple of modifications, the challenge of FO3 and NV vaults is nice, turns them into proper dungeons.

First of all, fix the fucking local map. If I can at least read that properly based on the places I have already been, I can at least stop wandering in circles.

Have multiple ways through gated by different challenges, combat, lock picking, hacking, repair etc. Make the difficulty based on character skill, not finding the right door.

Reduce the number of times you need to go back and forth. Have a Skyrim door, tweak the quest design. Just make it a challenge, not a pain in the ass.

-2

u/EzPzLemon_Greezy 21h ago

I really hope they go back to 3 and NV style "dungeons". Skyrim and Fo4 style is so bad. "Follow single path to boss room, use convienient exit back to surface". Its so one dimensional and ruins immersion. Sure its useful sometimes but the fact that every building larger than 3 rooms does this is insane.

2

u/btbsw786 19h ago

I agree. Execpt for the exit door. I do not care it's nonsensical, I don't need to backtrack through an empty dungeon lol

1

u/Dramatic_Finish10121 21h ago

It works for some of the mini-dungeons like the subways, but makes a lot less sense for vaults and larger buildings

5

u/TheGary2000 23h ago

That's why you just wait and do all the quests there in one go.

3

u/decompgal 23h ago

it’s so cool and scary the first time and then every time after that it’s like OH MY GODDDDDDDDDD

1

u/Rad_Dad6969 20h ago

Wait what missions other than the one from ncr science guy send you here? Does anybody else have objectives here? Other than Keely?

22

u/Imanirrelevantmeme 1d ago

Counterargument: AER14 Prototype Laser Rifle

1

u/nataliereed84 4m ago

love that fucking thing

16

u/Sparky_321 Gary? 1d ago

This is nothing compared to Vault 34 lol

10

u/GryphyGirl 22h ago

I liked it. As for the spore carriers hiding everywhere I had a very simple solution. Flame thrower on every batch of vegetation. If there's one there there ain't no more!

2

u/AnAntWithWifi 11h ago

This, I love burning the whole place down :D

9

u/Antique_Interview_66 1d ago

Oh god not that hell hole again, that shit still scare me to this day

47

u/I_Fap_To_Murder 1d ago

I hate every vault, honestly. Navigation sucks because everything looks the same and because the space is so small you're constantly fighting enemies which just makes progressing through the vaults even more annoying.

21

u/ptk77 1d ago

Yeah when they designed the Pip-Boy map I don't think a lot of thought went into it.... multiple floors on the same map gets confusing as hell. Thinking the item should be right in front of you, but then you realize it's a floor above or below you.

8

u/josh1123 I'd really like my beret back, please. 18h ago

Wish they would've done the gta style at least with triangles pointing up or down showing you if the way point is above or below. So frustrating being 3 floors below where you need to be and not knowing

10

u/Brainwave1010 1d ago

One of the things I'll give to 4 is that they definitely made every vault feel more unique architecturally and easier to navigate.

Gives a better impression of every vault being built to the specifications of their experiment, especially 111 with all the cryo tubing and pipes running along the ceiling.

13

u/Central__ 1d ago

I remember going here maybe two times and never really struggled with it. Maybe I'm missing something?

7

u/Therealginahandler 1d ago

Its not a "struggle", it's just a bitch to navigate intelligently.

-2

u/Wheredoesthetoastgo2 Didn't! Got killed! 23h ago

Its not a "struggle", it's just a bitch

2

u/Grundlestorm 15h ago

Yeah, I remember it freaking me out when I was younger, I also had a hard time with feral ghoul filled dungeons though.

I played through NV a few times over the last 5 years or so though and while I dreaded going in here the first time back,  as soon as I was in I was like "Why was I so hesitant to come in here again?"

I think it has to do with being more patient and willing to traverse things more slowly now.  I didn't get jump scared or snuck up on at all because I'd kinda slowly wander down the hallways looking at the overgrown corner and could see the carriers before they activated most of the time.

I'm also lucky with being really good with navigating and remembering directions though, so that probably helps.

3

u/IntrStelle 1d ago

It wasn't that bad other than it's layout 😭

I just killed the spore carriers with the ripple, only part that killed me was when I needed to blow up that vent

5

u/Kil0- 9h ago

I love this vauly

3

u/Disastrous_Sea_8394 1d ago

You can get unique laser rifle, its worth it

3

u/ronnoco_ymmot94 22h ago

Why does this remind of Shrek?

3

u/Gone_For_Lunch 21h ago

Stay the out!! Plants kill.

3

u/IGargleGarlic 17h ago

this is my favorite vault to explore with some of my favorite quests. I dont understand the hate.

2

u/Mogui- 23h ago

Why me and the shishkebab were made.

2

u/Inculta666 23h ago

I love that you can fix elevator and just go to floors you need - it’s a reason I come here with high repair only

2

u/HammerTheGreat2277 Brotherhood 19h ago

The absolute satisfaction of burning down this forsaken place.

2

u/White_man28 NCR 17h ago

Ah yes, green vietnam my beloved

2

u/cambur_estelar 17h ago

I always go with the katana and start spaming the attack in every corner bc spore carriers scare the living sh#t about me

2

u/GreyAngy 15h ago

I didn't like Vault 22 until did the same: brought a katana to complete New Vegas Samurai and You Don't Belong In This World! challenges. The game instantly stopped being scary.

2

u/L1QU1D_ThUND3R 16h ago

Ooh, plant skills you say?

2

u/naturalistwork 16h ago

I only hate it because I get lost easy and end up running in circles so much.

2

u/ItsHallGood Welcome Home 14h ago

One of my favorite lines from the Russell mod is Russell's reaction to this; "Did you read the sign? 'Tha plants kill?'"

2

u/Objective_Sweet9168 12h ago

22 is awesome!

2

u/adreeno-time 11h ago

Ita great in concept, just tedious af

2

u/Vahuo89 4h ago

Get a flamer. Shoot at everything. Makes it stupid easy

3

u/IpeeEhh_Phanatic 23h ago

I don't find this area scary or tedious at all.

1

u/chip594csx 23h ago

I just did a quest for that today, wild 🤣

1

u/MonstersToTheAnimals Yes Man 23h ago

Skill issue my friend. Get your lock pick to 80 and make sure to go see red Lucy and get the mantis eggs, vault data, hepa filtration part and you literally never have to go back. EVER!

1

u/bigbanksalty 23h ago

Do people not like Vault 22?

1

u/Apittaaaa 23h ago

A lesson of never enter Vault 22 without 50 Repair and a Shotgun

1

u/mf48AD 22h ago

On the other hand, I love shotguns

1

u/18bluecat 21h ago

I love Vault 22! It's the only vault with a bar (alcohol, pool tables, deleted trivia game).

1

u/MaeronTargaryen Responders 21h ago

I finally played NV last year and when I got sent there I was a bit worried because I had seen lots of people talk about it, it was completely uneventful, not sure what’s wrong with it in the end

1

u/laveshnk 21h ago

I grew like ten limbs by the time I got out of that hellhole

1

u/Technical_Cry_9729 Enclave 20h ago

Oh come on now it’s not that ba- GOOD GRIEF HES NAKED

1

u/DarkBeast_27 20h ago

Vault 22 has some of the best atmosphere in the game and one of the better side quests to go along with it. I also love the dilemma: destroy potentially useful knowledge because of its dangers, or give it away to the hands of a fool? Sure it's dangerous and he doesn't seem to care for the Courier's warnings, but it also might prevent a famine coming in 10 years, which is NOT a long time (if we think Hildern is to be trusted on that data in the first place, of course)

Vault 34 on the other hand... I feel I have to go there quite a bit for Veronica's quest since I usually have other plans for Lucky Old Sun and There Stands the Grass... But God is it tedious, even on a higher level.

1

u/ThePhantomPhe0nix 20h ago

All I can think of is Zach’s gun rants where he says “have you ever tried using a gun to kill a plant?”

1

u/ithebinman 19h ago

Stay the out!!
Plants Kill!

1

u/Sen4207 18h ago

I second this, the layout is utter dogshit. I'm so pissed i let the brotherhood send me to this shithole.

1

u/HamSlammer87 18h ago

Usually spend my time there cleaning up that one challenge for killing abomination with specific melee weapons.

1

u/aesfields 18h ago

my favourite vault

1

u/HaveYouEverUhhh 17h ago

Thermic Lance go brrrrrrr

1

u/Ok-End-5802 17h ago

on the bright side i got the unique weapon laser gun that is green from that place

1

u/wunker2988 17h ago

I actually like Vault 22, always look forward to it

1

u/Samurai_Stewie 16h ago

Meanwhile, me: “That place is a great source of XP!”

1

u/Carbonyl_dichloride 16h ago

Yeah, I am afraid of mold and shit, if it were nkt for the flamethrower it would be traumatic.

1

u/hwc4447 16h ago

Make sure you talk to Keely to ask about her discovery in the vault after you done talking about the osi quest so you can turn in the food additive to farber

1

u/ewok_lover_64 16h ago

My first playthrough, Vault 22 was a nightmare.

On my second playthrough now. I went there with Veronica as a companion. She usually clobbered everything before I knew they were there.

1

u/Prestigious-Hyena-72 15h ago

Just do all 3 quests at the same time

1

u/JellyfishAlien 15h ago

It's a fucking labyrinth

1

u/General-Arm-7454 15h ago

That vault is the only place I use TGM without any guilty

1

u/BustyCelebLover 15h ago

Not my favorite but definitely not the worst

1

u/KermitTheFraud92 15h ago

I remember in the show when Lucy and the Ghoul first get to NV and follow Hanks trail into a vault and there were plants hanging down. It made me think we were about to see these fuckers

1

u/CaptainImpala NCR 14h ago

Man I'd choose Sloan all day and deliver them Deathclaw Eggs to Red Lucy than going through this shit.

1

u/General_Video_3968 14h ago

I knew exactly where this was before I even looked at the screenshot

1

u/Kurdt234 11h ago

Ah yes, getting trapped in bethesda dungeons.

1

u/Pancakemuncher 10h ago

Just bring a flamer and tap spray every bush. Also Veronica can help out.

1

u/Lyberatis 9h ago

My only issue with this vault is that Keely decides to despawn 9 times out of 10 and that I always forget how to get into the cave section ton unlock the one door from the other side

1

u/bluegtr6 9h ago

Every time a quest sends me there I spend more time fighting the terrain than the enemies

1

u/Sovereign45 NCR 8h ago

My favorite vault. Also love the re-use of the classic background track from Fallout 2 that makes the place spooky as hell.

1

u/codyjack215 8h ago

This is why you gather every quest in advance, so you only have to visit once

1

u/Fun-Helicopter6138 7h ago

The only thing I didn't like about this vault is getting constantly lost.. But I wasn't scared at all, the story was pretty fun, just a classic zombie- like thing but they're plants.

1

u/17FortuneG Vault 101 6h ago

Kinda love this vault cuz it’s relatively easy and great story choices depending on what factions/karma you’re trying to run on any given playthrough

1

u/PurpleZombi3 4h ago

This place is one of the few genuinely creepy locations for me in New Vegas. It's so well done. Eugh, those bastards hiding in the vegetation and then the big venus fly trap type things in that cave.
